OdenigboAroli: I hate lofty dreams. Lets provide basic infrastructures and social services firstly, before we start dreaming of building a New York in Onicha. Schit makes me sick! Ife dilu nwaologbo nma olaba tea. I have typically noticed that it is our people in USA that understand that building basic infrastructure is more important than trying to replicate new York city. This realization often comes with traveling and living abroad especially in a place like USA that has multiple levels of great cities. I have the same pain when people talk about replicating Lagos in the SE or replicating Onitsha in Nnewi or Awka. it all goes to show they have missed the whole lesson on sustainable cities. Many average American cities that are not the huge ones such as (Atlanta,New york,Boston,Los Angeles,Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago,Washington DC,Baltimore) have just every amenity, working public utilities and ability to support business than the mega cities. Therefore, there is no need to replicate Miami in Jacksonville because whatever is obtainable in Miami is also obtainable in Jacksonville. Therefore, replicating flawed mega cities is just the worst type of mindset. As Odenigbo said, putting in the BASIC infrastructure in a planned conducive city is all you need. ofcourse, the idea of building business parks which Obi started in Onitsha then stopped is an excellent tool used by small American cities to provide standard office spaces within designated areas of the city to enable businesses to easily find lettable office space to set up.Some may want to use central business district, it's fine. but it mustn't be a term always associated with skyscrapers and sorts. We can talk about providing business parks for many SE cities to enable business lettable office spaces within the city to set up easily, but aiming to build empty skyscrapers just to compete with elsewhere betrays one's vain mindset. |

SpaceTour: Main market is actually evolving into malls/plazas. Good one! One hopes they are able to replace all the old buildings in main market with modern buildings. Also, making space for eateries or relaxation places in those buildings. The absence of abundant eateries or decent restaurants inside decent buildings with cleanliness of the restaurant environment to the level of at least Mr. Biggs, makes visiting main market an unpleasant event even for the locals. Visiting Onitsha main market should actually be developed into a tourist level activity that should be pleasurable to do by visitors to the city. |

While i am one of the advocates for a United Africa and a very big country called "United States of Africa", the people of those territories must be given a fair chance to discuss their association and rights under a big country. It is unacceptable to simply assume that once we are in a big country, the majority now has a god given right of tyranny over the minority peoples.
Nigeria must be renegotiated or it should be allowed to dissolve. Our fathers were not consulted before they were added into the contraption. Since then, it has all been a free for all looting like a zoo. People simply took what belonged to others and often conspired to kill the real owners of the resource in order to steal it unchallenged.
We must negotiate how to live in one country and how everyone's concerns can be addressed or we can very well go our separate ways. |

Don't be deterred by the numerous yoruba monikers that hate and would want to ridicule objective and strategic thinking Igbos like you. In Nigeria, everyone thinks about how to site things within their region and state EXCEPT Igbos. Then they cry loudest when such is burned to the ground by irate mobs especially in the north. I remember in one of Chikason's speaches, he mentioned that he lost half of his profit by siting his groundnut oil factory in Nnewi than Kano. Luckily for him, his factory is still survivng today while another Igboman that had a vegetable oil factory in Kaduna was destroyed and burnt to the ground in 2000! Now who was smarter? Chikason that took lower profit margin but safeguarded his investment for his children or the Igbo industrialist in Kaduna that made a lot of money, but today his factory no longer exist? Like Aguiyi Ironsi that refused to acknowledge that a coup could happen to him, many Igbos simply cannot learn until it is too late. Those that want to invest in Yoruba and hausaland without anything to fall back on in their state can continue to do so. geoworldedu: Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR (born 17 December 1942) is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces
.[4] He is a retired Nigerian Army Major General and was Head of State of Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, after taking power in a military coup d'état.[5][6] The term Buharism is ascribed to the Buhari military government.[7][8]
He ran unsuccessfully for the office of President in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the March 2015 elections. Buhari won the 2015 general election, defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. When he took office on 29 May 2015 -during which the abbreviation of his name was symbolically changed from 'GMB' (General Muhammadu Buhari) to 'PMB' (President Muhammadu Buhari)- marked the first time in Nigeria's history that an incumbent elected President peacefully transferred power to an elected leader of the opposition.
Buhari has stated that he takes responsibility for whatever happened under his watch during his military rule, saying that he cannot change the past. He also describes himself as a "converted democrat".[9]

samueld0: Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi said his party, All Progressives Congress, APC, will get justice and retrieve the River State’s governorship mandate from his successor, Nyesom Wike at the election tribunal.
Wike and Amaechi Amaechi made the remarks at a special thanksgiving service to mark his 50th birthday organised by his friends at Corpus Christi Cathedral in Port Harcourt on Wednesday while responding to an appeal from the Catholic Bishop of Port Harcourt Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Camillus Etukudor to settle the row between him and Wike. The Catholic Bishop had congratulated the governor- elect, Wike, for his electoral victory and urged both former politicians to settle their differences. He said: “As for the outgoing governor and the in-coming governor, I urge them to work together so that there will be peace. We need peace in Rivers State. “There can be no reconciliation without forgiveness. There will be no peace without reconciliation. So, it is time for the out-going governor and the in-coming governor to reconcile so that peace will return to Rivers State. “No matter their differences they should reconcile in the interest of peace.” But Amaechi insisted that justice must be seen to have been done before he can think of forgiving and settling with Wike, who was his former Chief of Staff, Government House, from 2007 to 2011. Wike, who Governor Amaechi recommended for a ministerial appointment was later appointed Minister of State for Education, a position from which he resigned to contest for the governorship of the state. Amaechi said: “My Lordship talked about forgiveness. In the Catholic Church, you don’t oppose the views of your bishop. His words represent an order. If you oppose him you may be barred from taking Holy Communion. “You are not a true Catholic if you don’t receive the Holy Communion. But Your Lordship, the same Catholic doctrine also states that justice comes before forgiveness.” He added: “All those that were killed during the last general elections must get justice. Their families must get justice. Our party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, must get justice first at the petition election tribunal. Our mandate must be retrieved at the tribunal. “I am surprised that My Lordship congratulated Wike here today. I am using this opportunity to call on the Church to join the APC in praying to God so that we can reclaim our mandate. Reclaiming our mandate at the petition election tribunal will represent a measure of justice. We must seek justice before reconciliation. In attendance at the event were APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo State; former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; former governor of Rivers State, Chief Rufus Ada-George; Alabo Graham-Douglas; retired Adolphous Justice Karibi- Whyte, Senator Ararume, among others.

Just deport all the people living in Rivers state to Abia state and import people from Katsina to take their place. That is the ONLY way APC will win in Rivers. BTW, I'm glad Rochas was returned in IMO, but we know he truly did not win. |

lexy2014: I don't no what these oil magnates have contributed 2 nigeria but then I don't xpect them 2. But when niger deltans sit down cross their legs and point accusing fingers at others 4 their problems, then it makes a lot of sense 2 ask, what have their own people done 4 them. If d rich from d region can't help their kin, what do u xpect from an outsider? Social justice is d issue not sharing oil blocks. Sharing oil blocks amongs ND indigenes isn't social justice cos d real victims of social injustice i.e. D poor and downtrodden wouldn't get anything. Social justice is about ensuring that d wealth in d hands of d leaders and elected reps in d ND is distributed equitably. Social justice is about ensuring that d poor and their children are given access 2 more priviledges and opportunities. With d amount of money pumped into d region since 1999 thru 13percent, monthly allocations, ecological fund, pipeline protection contracts,NDDC,min of ND, taxes collected by states and LGs,and allocation 2 legislators, are u saying that d poor people in d region can't have social justice? Sir, I have been following your arguments. You would have made a lot of sense if you were talking about Americans and not Nigerians. But because the subject is about Nigeria & Nigerians, then you are either very naive or deliberately mischievous. In America, one may be born in Florida or Iowa, then he ends up as Senator or Governor of Texas or New York! Thus, where you live is your state! Which is the opposite in Nigeria. Even the so called Federal capital territory is claimed by ethnic groups and people from other parts of Nigeria are discriminated against. I agree that social justice isn't about giving oil wells to ND citizens, but it is surely one way to give justice. Niger Delta has been given the fake argument of "One Nigeria" to rob them blind. Part of the reason why there is so much corruption and inefficiency in Nigeria is because we have learnt to see oil as the ONLY resource in Nigeria. Many countries have prospered by mining solid minerals and large scale agriculture. If we had sincerely developed these two sectors across all states of the federation, you will see that many states will prefer to mine their solid minerals or export their agricultural products than to try to cheat Niger deltans of their oil. Someone mentioned that if the oil belong to the north, no Niger Deltan or other Nigerians will have any of it, and it is true. Let me rephrase your argument and put the north in the position of the Niger Deltans so you can see it from their perspective. If for example, Nigeria depends upon solid minerals and agriculture for foreign exchange, and since the north has vast agricultural lands and solid minerals, Yoruba or Igbo men will flood the north and allocate themselves all that fertile northern lands filled with solid minerals and claim they are doing so because it is one Nigeria! The worst part is that they will do so by fiat because the control the federal government. then, if any northerner dares to ask questions why the Igbos and yorubas own the most lands in their region, the Igbos and Yorubas will retort with their own question of " what they have done with the remaining land northerners control?" Such behavior will be deemed as the height of insensitivity. If you cannot fathom the south treating the north like that, then it is highly unfair to treat Niger Deltans in that manner. |
Politics › Re: US, Others Caution Buhari On Choice Of Petroleum Minister by ChimaAdeoye: 8:59pm On May 20, 2015 |
xmich: Ahead of the May 29 handover of the Federal Government administration to Muhammadu Buhari following his victory at the March 28 polls, friendly countries have continued to show renewed interest in who occupies some key posts in the incoming administration.
Already US had expressed concern over series of issues including human rights abuses by the Nigerian military in its prosecution of the war in the North-east, and the manner top officials of the Nigerian government have managed the oil and gas sector of the economy citing several acts of corruption.
A source in the Foreign Ministry which pleaded anonymity said the US is now eager to assist Buhari turn the situation around, as it has always considered Nigeria an important ally on the African continent.
This was as Daily Sun learnt that several highly placed persons and multinational companies who attended a recent US State Department briefing cited corruption as the main reason for low investment in Nigeria’s oil sector. Against this background, a source said the US is backing a senior official of a multi- national oil company from the Niger Delta who is conversant with transparency rules to emerge as the Petroleum Minister.
The source said, “in fact, the multinationals have discussed with the US State Department and have already agreed on a credible candidate, who they believe will be able to restore confidence and attract the necessary investment into the critical sector. Meanwhile sources say the US has already made this position known to the incoming administration cautioning the president-elect against making a wrong choice in the appointment to the office.
It urged the President to appoint people of integrity and proven track record into his cabinet to make the job easier for him.
Already, top oil and gas industry operators have indicated their support for the candidate, who they believe will bring his vast experience to bear in the turnaround of the Ministry and give credibility to the sector and the Buhari’s “Change” mantra. In 2014, Transparency International ranked Nigeria as the 136th most corrupt country in the world.
In addition, a US report in March last year said that in Nigeria, “massive, widespread and pervasive corruption affected all levels of government and the security forces,” while alleging that judges were not left out of the massive corruption ring, the report accused the government of not implementing laws on corruption effectively, thus deliberately allowing “officials (to) frequently engage in corrupt practices with impunity.”
These are, possibly, part of what the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, saw when he cried out that the current administration’s “body language” encouraged corruption. The US government had also condemned the pardon granted some ex- convicts by the National Council of States headed by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013.
Recall that former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreiye Alamieyeseigha, the former head of the Bank of the North, Shettima Bulama and some other Nigerians were granted a presidential pardon. The US had roundly condemned the act, saying, “this decision undermines anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria and encourages impunity. If the government is serious about uprooting public corruption, sanctions against those who betray the public trust should be strengthened, not relaxed,” said Akere Muna, Vice-chair of Transparency International.
And now the US has sounded a note of caution to President-elect, Buhari, not to bow to pressure by allowing politicians foster any candidate for the Petroleum Ministry whose records are stained or for purpose of satisfying political patronage.
According to the US, it will send the wrong signal that business is going to continue as usual, in which case, the incoming president might not get the much needed assistance from the US or any European country for that matter.
www.sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=120431 Shebi they will also stop drilling more shale oil which has eliminated Nigeria's oil exports to US and created our economic troubles. American advise is like your competitor in a soccer match telling you who to use in your team? Can this be considered a well intentioned advise? |
