Jer29v11: Hello all, I'm new to this thread and I must admit I have found a lot of the info very useful. Thank you.
I am also new to the Canada Immigration Process and I have quite a number of questions. I am waiting for my WES evaluation and in the meantime, I calculated my CRS score using an online tool. To my surprise it came back with a total of 393. I strongly believe I haven't input all the details required and probably missed a chunk of my points. Can anyone help with a rough estimate of my CRS score? Below is a summary of my details;
IELTS Results; S-8.5, R-8.5, L-8.5, W-6.5. Total Band Score = 8 Highest Degree qualification - MSc. 5 years work experience in Engineering/oil & gas No family or relatives in Canada Single Age 34 No Canadian job offer (yet)
Please let me know if you require any other information to help with my inquiry. Thanks Your IELTS result is the problem. Your result is very nice, however, it misses the Canadian Language benchmark 9 , which requires a minimum of LRSW 8777. A 7 in writing would have added over 50 points to your current CRS score. Retake your IELTS exam and aim for CLB 10 (LRSW 8.5 8 7.5 7.5) or at worst a CLB 9 (LRSW 8777). You can also seek for a remark of your writing test to see if the score could be upgraded, although the response time for this process is roughly 2 months. You can not seek for remark of a test that the result was released over 6 weeks ago. |

Nigeria is not in any way oil rich, expecially when you factor our population and other factors like mono economy (oil as about the only mainstay). Libya - 6 million population, Before the libyan crisis/war, oil production was 1.6 million barrels, it is currently under 400,000 barrels. Venezuela - 30 million population 2.6 million barrels . Algeria - 39 million population , oil production 1.4 million barrels. You can check for others. Nigeria has the potential to be quite rich, but currently it is not, it is more of a low income economy, during the oil boom we were close to being classified as a middle income economy., but not anymore. |

At least you can afford to fly, many like you cant even pay 50 naira for okada and you say 23k is nothing? Many of us heared far less during NYSC and life wasnt bad. Given the current realities, i think its a good program. Its a temporary engagement and a skill acquisition program, many will fly high if they put in their best. I think it is even better than the NYSC environment, in the sense that those graduates can take the 'token" and have the opportunity of most likely still live under their parents/guardians, meaning they might not fend for food or accomodation expenses, they now have at least money to attend job interviews without being a total pest to parents , and who knows save the money and merge with funds from other sources to start up an SME. |

Eddygourdo: and thus what happens to the unemployed millions of graduates holding degrees in education, NCE and the likes. Why can't they be employed to fill such vacancies . People who are trained in teaching people. What type of teaching can someone with a degree in economics have in a nursery or kindergarten class. Are we not taking food from the mouth of others ? When the program is over. What happens to the volunteers . They have simply wasted two years of their lives garnering experience that doesn't better them affter the program. Is that a proactive plan for the nigerian youth ? I really disagree I have just read about the program, if you take pain to read like i have, instead of sulking you wont be asking the first question. the post talked about B.sc/B.a edu, As for N.C.E i didnt see them listed in there, but it is basic common sense that if 500,000 is removed from the unemployed millions to earn a living, irrespective of how much of a token it might appear, it is something. There are graduates with degree in economics education, my male cousin is one, he can be posted to teach related subjects that best fit. The fact that someone gets a volunteer job that has a lifespan of two years does not mean such fellow press pause or stop on his/her life pursuit na. Some will most likely drop out before the end of the 2 year scheme because they got access to greener pastures, and the vacant space will be filled up with others. Most of the teachers in private schools in Nigeria barely earn 23,000. It is a shame, but it is the fact. |

Eddygourdo: To fools and educated illiterates, the teaching programme is laudable. How can you be so daft, are they producing future teachers? What skills could u garner from teaching that would be useful to the grauduates on completion of the 2 year program. Or are we merely extending the wasted years of NYSC. What happened to an iintensive two year skill acquisition program , what happened to entrepreneurship programs, programs that can actually help the graduates become self sustaining. Since it is voluntary what is the aim of this N power thing. To produce teachers or to empower our jobless youths .
I thought we would be creating models for diversification, self employment and job creation. Yet some of u half baked graduates who can't reason thinks a two year teacher voluntary teacher program would help you become a good engineer, doctor, business manager when you finish it or maybe the 23k would make you rich ? Or the laptop to be given would make u an employer.
Fools deserve to be lead by one eyed blind men. You all disgust me The programme is not primarily tailored for skill acquisition, it is meant to meet the shortage of school teachers in the nations schools, and volunteers are called to offer their services. Govt will appreciate the efforts of the volunteers. This programme is not primarily meant for the volunteers, it is meant for the school kids. |

kinibigdeal: Lagos Light Rail Line is too costly compare to a similar project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia .
Please see below :
Addis Ababa Light Rail Project,Span : 34Km. Cost : $475m number of Stations : 39 Project Tenure : 2011 - 2015
Status : The project is already completed and running effectively .
Lagos Light Rail project
Span : 27km Cost : $1.2Bn number of Stations : 13 project Tenure : 2010 till date Status : not completed
Is the new 4th mainland bridge worth the cost? I dont think it is same model, lagos is building an overhead light rail. To the best of my knowlege Addis Ababa light rail is not like such. |

As for tax, Nigerians do pay taxes especially PAYE taxes and VAT which is always factored into the cost of items and usually not listed seperately.
What will kill Nigeria is kleptomaniac, government officials pure and simple. The problem is not just kleptomania, it is way beyond that. The income base of most states is quite weak, and the leaders are not creative to expand IGR partly because the structure of governance we practice is faulty and another because followers love deceit . Nigerians overestimate income of the country and state, when it is compared to the population it becomes close to nothing. South africa with 50 million population has over 25 trillion naira budget , compared to a 180 million population with 6 trillion naira budget. Oyo state receives barely 1 billion naira mothly from FG in the last few months. I just gave a simple calculation where paying salaries of secondary school teachers will gulp the whole 1 billion naira. What then happens to building new secondary schools, renovating old ones, employing new secondary school teachers ? What about paying primary school teachers?, tertiary institutions nkor Other sectors nkor ? Abi health workers like doctors, nurses e.t.c no go collect pay? Govt would not build infrastructures? High population is a two edged sword, one edge is an advantage, the other edge is a disadvantage. the VAT you are talking of is overrated. Do you know how much each states get from VAT.? Dont give Awolowo example to justify free education o, Many years back, University students were fed fat with meal tickets and there where one or at most 2 in rooms of HOR that now has 7 students +? While Govt needs was growing in geometric progression, its income was barely growing, or at best it was growing in arithmetic progression. Every govt worker wants increase in pay na. A teachers reward is no more in heaven, My late grandmother retired as a head mistress of a primary school, and she jocularly told me the pay then meant most landlords avoid renting out houses to teachers. The question for debate should be what can be done to generate tangible income across the states ? |

If you know the hell of stress involved in a PhD program, you wouldn't have been suspecting any fowl play. When writing a thesis, the best time to concentrate is in the dead night. A PhD program entails at least a 100 publication within 2-3years nowadays which need a serious scrutiny by some panel. And she also need to be submitting a report every months to her supervisor if she really want to complete her degree within 5years. The quality of education in Oyo state is shameful, the govt income can not cater for the kind of free education most people are clamouring for, I suggest Govt give out free and QUALITY education within primary schools, and not the kind of free education govt is currently offering in ramshackled classrooms and disoriented teachers.
IN Oyo state there are close to 650 secondary schools, if there are average of 40 teachers in each schools , and they earn average of N40,000 monthly. 650 * 40 *40,000 = over 1 billion naira monthly to pay salaries.
This calculation excludes primary school teachers and tertiary institution lecturers /members of stafff.
How realistic is govt paying over 1 billion naira as monthly wages to teachers in just secondary schools in the face of dwindling income? What then happens to subvention to schools to run and maintain these schools? Little wonder most of the schools are in decrepit state .
N.B = My estimate is quite conservative.
Anyone still believing in the Awolowo type of free education in 2016 is living in the past. Awolowo was quite intelligent, and the strategy of the past might not necessarily apply now. Free education electoral promise is a deceipt that guarantees sub standard education that can not make students compete in the environment. I can bet many secondary school graduates in Oyo public schools can not write better than some primary 5 common entrance applicants trained in private schools.
Govt should focus on primary education and make it truly free and qualitative. It is the basic building block. |
