Business / Local Governments New Revenue Drive: The Lagos Experience. by chinedu234(m): 1:16pm On Oct 23, 2019
It is no longer in doubt that Nigeria is cash strapped. The economy is severely challenged and the government itself is battling to survive. This puts the common man in a very precarious situation. The once regulated local government revenue drive undertaken by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) seems to have evaporated under the current desperate measures by the federal and state governments to sustain the usual opulent lifestyles of officials and godfathers. On the federal highways from Onitsha to Lagos, ninth mile to Abuja,Jos etc,the same story abound. Local governments officials and touts line up especially at very bad portions of the roads to forcefully request for various emblems and stickers from trucks and buses. You can never have all the certificates they request from you because they come out with coinages that do not exist anywhere else. Today 23/10/2019, local government officials and thugs operating all around Ikotun,Abaranje,Egbe,Idimu,Ejigbo have been arresting trucks for not having ON and OFF permit and Garage permit. The intimidated drivers and companies are being taken to local council offices and made to cough out about #12,000. The touts claim that the permits are obtained for #5,000 and #4,500 respectively. The extra is the penalty for not knowing about the new certificates. One really wonders if these are the ingredients of the fuel required for the take off of the next level jet. A reminder is necessary here for those who don't understand the transient nature of power that the mandate, security protection and all other freebies they enjoy today as government functionaries will not last forever. Alex Baddeh should be on peoples minds.

Politics / Re: Border Closure: Local Rice Varieties Now Rule Markets by chinedu234(m): 10:17am On Oct 15, 2019
Business is normally driven by the primary principles of competitive advantages. A digression means inefficient allocation of resources. The results may not be fully appreciated from the start. Therefore,Time is an essential element for a better analysis of the present scenario.

Nigeria is actually a poor country. The administration that understood and managed the resources properly was the Obj government. Lean resource management and savings was the hallmark.

One of Tinubu boys harassing and extorting truck drivers in the night. You only need to witness where and how these urchins deal with stranded drivers when their trucks break down at night. They even collude with LASTMA and more especially in Ogun state with TRACE officers to extort drivers. This one is lucky today. Might not be so tomorrow.

Mr Ali can do well to know that the amount they have collected will go back abroad via higher prices for next importations. How has that made Nigeria better? Secondly, how long can Nigeria afford to keep the borders closed? What about the costs of keeping the borders closed?

SIMPLE ECONOMICS: If the incompetent Buhari administration had paid the slightly higher than $800m,the nation wouldn't have been going through this unnecessary and unfortunate situation. The travel expenditures of some of these hooligans to U.K.,the monies currently wasted on legal experts local and abroad, monies wasted on laundering an already horrible image with foreign media, the cost of distraction from very important current matters. Nigeria is being run by people close to baboons.

Law can be very interesting. The parties agreed to adjudicate a breach in the UK courts and there is also a law in the UK barring confiscation of state property via the judicial system without confirmation from the sovereign party in the dispute. Quite interesting.

at least think na, isnt it the shipper that sets prices for cargo its carrying according to each routes, why are you people always bitter like this... custom duties of a country are the same accross all ports both land and sea so is the hadling fees collected by INTELS

atleast some greedy people and their party completely marginalised that port
If you do your findings right, you will observe that handling charges are different across various ports. Onne is quite different from tincan and apapa. However the improvement should be acknowledged.
