Lagos and Abuja have the best infrastructure in the country, THAT'S why they get investments. Nobody cares about status of a city, it's about the money you can make in that city and if you're paying double because of bad roads, no water, no power, no security etc it can crush your business. If Enugu did something as simple as focus on 24/7 power, there would be no need for building these fake eko atlantics and so forth. The city it's self will turn into an eko atlantic.

The only way to get around that is to decentralize the powers of the FG.
For example, if Akwa Ibom builds an international airport, they only need to convince major airlines to fly the route and not FG. In the case of Nigeria,the FG micro-manages everything, so they will block international access to Uyo, even if it is a viable route. No matter what is built in Uyo, investors will still troop to Abuja and Lagos!

londoner: The key is to create a situation where people are not really disadvataged to any unbearable length, by living on the outskirts, because there is more than one centre both within and outside the dominant centre. I agree that ALL cities town of the SE should be developed with this in mind. If we can think collectively, we can act in a manner that supports our population, commerce and industries in each state that make up the REGION.

One disastrous thing we learnt in Nigeria is the "Capital city" mentality, whereby the madness is to create a mega capital city,while the rest of the towns in the country is ugly and neglected. Such policies are the reasons why there had been so much problems in Nigeria.

In the USA, there is a minimum city code whereby evey state must abide. Thus their cities are almost of the same basic standard.
BTW, Washington DC is not the finest nor biggest city in the country. In Nigeria, wherever is named the capital gets all the preferential treatments to be the best.While the rest of the country is crappy.

Ikengawo: I DESPISE the single city idea for the SE

1. Bigger is not always better: Just because a city is bigger doesn't make it better. Example Abuja and Lagos. A Single city for what will be 50 million people by 2020 is madness, though I understand the incentives. Think about pollution, traffic, amenities, cost of living etc.

2. Germany: Germany follows a model where there are several cities that can sustain and support themselves and are almost essentially on equal standing. All of them offer what the other offers and because of this the next step for them economically is to export to the rest of the world. This is why Germany per capita leads the world in exports, and this is the model of Igbo land. an Igbo man from Owerri has no loyalty to Enugu. This is a strength not a weakness because he will strive to develop his home even if it's a village and not abandon it to start claiming something else like we see with Yorubas and hausa. This is the same as a German.

3. We're already moving in a multi city direction: There's no reason to reverse the natural tide of development we're already taking. People aren't abandoning Onitcha for Awka; they're both moving. Same with Umuahia and Aba, Owerri and Orlu, Enugu and Nsukka etc. In times of war and for general economic productivity, this is the best model to follow because we're safer with multiple heads as opposed to one. Besides, it's already our nature.







I'm also against unchecked outward sprawl. I live in a US city that sprawls almost endlessly. It makes for 45 minutes to get to work, almost an hour with traffic. As the city expands, the older parts are abandoned and rotted. Would you want to live in an 'older' part of town when a newer shinier part is added monthly? Property prices keep plummeting for the people that already own a home and increasing for those looking to buy one so owning a home is a bad investment now. Plus you can't convince investors to buy the old properties at the center of town and rebuild them or add something new when all of the economic activity is sprawling outwards.

Sprawl is horrible We don't want that in the SE nor do we have enough land. I believe that every village and city should have an urban planning blueprint because all of our communities will be urban or semi-urban centers by 2050. This plan should heed land conservation by encouraging home and business builders to build at no less that 3 stories, 4 stories in CBD.

This will allow government and investors to buy businesses in the center of town that can afford renovation, and build something more deserving of a CBD.

Those that are putting up all these "artist impression" NOT REAL actually built cities, are just talking without thinking.

Abagworo summed it by saying it will not be feasible to lay out such contruction in Enugu if it were not a federal capital or hold some importance. So that means, he has realized the impracticability of the suggestion for Enugu.

Orji is taking this state to another level like in terms of development, infrastructure and so on. he is a messaih of our days liberating the state from previous political bondage and making every one in the state equal insted of following the path of the previous administration that uses spades and wheel barrow to empower the state to imagine how great he is inhumane to the people of the state. Akwa Ibom State Government has said it may not be able to pay contractors for new projects because the projected revenue of over N400 billion expected by the state has not been realised.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, made the observation in reaction to the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) mid-year publication which showed that the state earned the highest revenue of N135.84 billion between January and June this year while Osun earned the least with N19.61 billion.

While debunking the claim that the state was the highest revenue earner in the country, Umanah said no state in the country earned up to one per cent of the revenue of the country.

His words: “When you are talking about allocation of N135.84 billion, it sounds big to you, but it is not a lot of money when you are doing key projects. When you look at projects like the new international stadium, these are not bread and butter projects. These are quality projects that cost money.

“You don’t build flyovers with N1 or N2. You don’t build underground tunnels with N2; you don’t dualize federal roads with N2; you build them with billions, so you put these monies into big projects. So, the states you are mentioning, are they able to do these types of projects?”

According to the information commissioner, the much touted N135.84 billion was a ‘drop in the ocean’ when juxtaposed with the over N400 billion 2014 budget estimates of the state government which provided for 80 per cent capital expenditure and 20 per cent recurrent expenditure.

“If God allows you to have something from your God-given resources, you also need to apply these resources to key infrastructure that would help turn your state around in terms of the right infrastructure, and I think Akwa Ibom has been prudent.

“If you look at that money you are talking about, if you take 80 per cent of it, you will be talking about N80 billion and then you may be talking about N20 bilion for recurrent. What will that amount to? If you juxtapose that with the budget of the state you can see that we are running a deficit.

“If that is what we have as half year report, and we have over N400 billion as budget estimates for 2014, you can see clearly that we are running a deficit and we may not have money to pay for projects,” he said.

In fact, it has been calculated that to build sustainable urban centers that avoid energy waste,high concentrated hydrocarbon combustion and other forms of energy wastes, a typical urban center should have no building higher than 12 floors.The land mass required for roads considering the number of floors versus the width of the roads showed very few urban centers in the world could afford the expanse of land required and the cost to build such extremely wide roads in order to avoid the projected energy waste when skyscrappers are clustered in areas serviced by normal width roads. Based on the modern requirement, Abuja, Nigeria's new federal capital territory passed a building regulatory code imbibing the modern recommendations limiting the maximum number of floors to be built in Abuja.

I don't think Enugu needs to aim at building clustered skyscrappers. Even the abominable financial cost involved in expanding the present roads and building flyovers to reduce the choking traffic caused by this system of buildings will present a major financial challenge for the city. The Abuja style development of moderate high rise buildings is the way to go for the city.

Abagworo: Rochas made that statement with respect to Peter Obi and he said some Anambra leaders and not all Anambra people. After all Ngige and a lot of Anambra people are working with Rochas. The truth is that Peter Obi was puting Jonathan's ambition ahead of Igbo ambition. Even till this day, anytime a picture is posted on that thread, they'll come up and start talking about Rochas as if Imo State is Rochas. Rochas is only the present Governor adding his own quota to development and will leave when his tenure completes. It is same with every other place.

I also advice you as an Igbo man to stop being fooled by Jonathan. As at today no road works or any of the things promised has been fulfilled by his administration. He promised to fulfill them before 2015 but today all the federal roads in the Southeast are still at snail pace progress. The Niger bridge is still a dream. In fact infrastructurally nothing can be pin-pointed as completed or rapidly progressing.

APC intentionally became hostile and sidelined Igbos in their silly belief they do not need Igbo to win. What they forgot was that as much as 2006 census was fake, Igbos reside in significant numbers outside the southeast. If APC had made the slightest effort to disregard men like Kwankwaso & El Rufai and gone ahead to court Igbo as advised by Ribadu, they will be at least sure of 25% in all the SE states. Those numbers could be decisive if they have a tight race elsewhere.

APC has made it obvious that it is a party determined to deal ruthlessly with the Igbo people of Nigeria. Rochas said what he said in order to please them that he is anti-Igbo. Amaechi even announced openly that he is not Igbo to please them. (Not to say Amaechi was ever Igbo). But Amaechi forgets that those that voted him into office are 50% ethnic Igbo! What a fool! There is a reason why GEJ emphasize his middle name "Ebele" to gain the confidence of every Nigerian.Even OBJ knew that much.
Anyhow, as much as i don't like Rochas, if you made him Presidential aspirant of APC, I WILL VOTE FOR HIM.

All in all, if you're able to study the situations involved you'll realize that I'd rather open a fresh thread for our debate than derail a good thread. Another reason for the ill perception is because I don't support the lies of Igbo being from Nri which angered some people from that area peddling the falsehood over the years.

I fought the ethnic battle when I was younger and still fight it to the fullest now. I just don't like playing ethnicity or religious intolerance as that is not in the best of Igbo interest. Every thing I do, its Igbo interest 1st and then our coexistence with other Nigerians. Most importantly is the need to be sincere and truthful all the time. For me, I heard Igbos came from Lokoja! I don't know those old enough to have been taught that. The important thing is that we have been identified as Igbo and our geographic coordinates correspond to SE Nigeria.
There are very mean people out there who hate us vehemently for no other reason than being born Igbo. Uyo needs to build business parks so that corporate businesses can easily find land and office space to establish in Uyo. The next is to complete the Ibaka seaport, then nobody can ever dispute that list.

I am so impressed at the quality of the job done by a credible company he consistently uses for critical jobs! Most SE states will use Ichie & Ichie construction company. So that they can go back and extract some kickback and the company ends up doing a very very shoddy job because they know they have already greased the palms of those who could have punished them.
