Actually what he needs are 2 physical and dynamic players BEHIND HIM in the 4-2-3-1 formation you mentioned. This is because he is too lazy when we do not have the ball and is basically a short one. Also he is not pacy enough to beat markers,he cant shrug off physical challenges.....all meaning he over-depends on the pass since the run or the dribble are both beyond him.

We are lacking something very important in both Rooney and Mata that should make both of them ideal for that position.

As Afrodoc said we need two strong players behind mata to get the best of him an Rooney should also play more upfront his falling back unnecessary robs us of the threat he should be staying up front.

So in essence, we need two strong players playing behind both of them for them to thrive effectively.

That's my take, anyways.

My sentiments exactly. I would even want LvG to try Anderson there first, but Valencia seems the obvious choice. He even has a great understanding with Rafael.

Mata needs to take his chance now or he is done for. We need to see those intricate defence splitting passes that would make LvG have a headache for a personel in hole when Rooney returns. RVP must also step up because he can be replaced with Rooney if Mata makes the Hole his own. We are still watching Falcao, just that everyone knows what he can do and believe he will come good.

The way LvG is going, he will play Falcao and Rvp, that leaves atleast four places in the middle, Di Maria takes the left, Valencia on the right in front of Rafael, blind in the middle with who? That's where I see a problem. Truly Anderson should have been the best bet there but I really don't know his state of mind and shape.

Fellaini, Fletcher, Carrick, Mata, Janujaz will all somewhat weaking that middle.

we can now see that the team is somewhat still unbalanced. if we are to look at positions vis a vis talent we would lacking in the creative area of the team and thats why have to deploy players not suited for a position to man that position and expect great performances from them each time.

The defence is another issue, i still believe Evans and Jones are our best pairing. Rafael seem to be our best left back. The other place of interest is our left back, we seem to have more players that are somewhat naturally gifted in playing that position, shaw, Rojo amd Blackett.

The likes of Rooney and Rooney have been disappointing. the likes of young and Valencia dont seem to inspire confidence in the fans as back ups.

LvG eye don dey open small small. We agree Rooney has a high work rate, but that's not what we want from a player in the hole. Brute force will only get you so far.

Players like Roberto Baggio have said he plays 80% with his brain and 20% with his feet, that's what we want from the hole, I guess most of our players in that position lack something to function in that hole.

Mata is intelligent but can be bullied of the ball, Rooney is just interested in pinging balls to left/right to no one in particular and thinks he is being intelligent. Maybe we shud play Di Maria or Herrera in that hole self, they seem to be better suited for that position.

LvG will soon regret making Rooney the captain if care is not taken, since his captain must play and Rooney would be found out to be master of no particular position and there would be a player better than him in every position they want to push him to.

RVP also has not impressed at all, maybe because he was absent in pre season, but I think his form has been suspect since after the group stages at the WC.

We have enough striker, but lack creativity in the hole and when we deploy players with insufficient intelligence or soft players there, the team suffers.
