I use them consistently for the last 5 years to deliver my laptop powerbank to customers everywhere in Nigeria. Needless i say that their price is the cheapest and i have not lost an item in those years. They always deliver! They are the cheapest because they incur loses which government pays for. Which in turns means less money for infrastructure, education and health. Do we need 15k people to produce and sell stamps?? In this day and age of email, e signatures, scan etc? |

xjiggy: Maybe u were too young to recall when MTN was claiming recharge cards could only be manufactured in S. Africa and they couldn't bill per second billing because it will cost them millions of Dollars to upgrade their systems. Then u had to pay #50 for a minute even if the call failed after 3sec. #20 for sms, minimum recharge card of #750 with one week validity and sim card for #34k. They even refuse interconnectivity with Econet in order to push their claim that they are "Every Where You Go". Look at those prices compared to now and Factor in inflation and tell me that's not exploitation and that I'm lying. It was Glo that came all of a sudden and delivered per secon billing and #1 sim card (#10k sim card with #9,999 credit inclusive). All what you said above doesn’t make them a monopoly. Was econet not also doing per minute billing at the time? It’s obvious your argument is just anti South Africa biased. |

proeast: I have been reading comments here and many of the posts are so annoying. You, just like several others who commented here, has a vested interest in DSTV. It is very apparent because you have strongly supported DSTV and giving all manner of support for them.
It is evident that Nigeria is probably the most football (precisely premiership) passionate country in Africa. DSTV even acknowledged that Nigeria is responsible for a good percentage of premiership subscribers in Africa but pays almost the same amount as the rest of Africa combined!
DSTV is a Shylock company that has reaped off Nigerians over the years, and they used marchiavelian ways to send competitors out of business.
SA does not have a football (premiership) "crazy" population like Nigeria. Even though they have higher GDP per capita, that advantage is definitely outstripped by Nigeria having a population that is about 4 times higher and a more passionate football following.
DSTV is so mean as a company that the margin of profit it allows dealers/agents selling their products is so little. Again, ask yourself, why would they increase their price astronomically at a time like this?
A company came all the way from SA to fleece us with reckless abandon yet we have Nigerians supporting them!?
Many of the comments here supporting DSTV with passion are from their employees, these ones are ready to sell their country just for the peanuts they are earning as salary. SMH! Explain EXACTLY how we have been ripped off? Population 4times as much doesn't amount to subscribers as you have seen the subscription stats on this thread already. Explain exactly HOW we have been fleeced. Companies operate all over the world. Dstv have no reason why they cannot operate in Nigeria. All sentiments in this post with no objective and transparent analysis. |

thinkmoney: I have heard this claim several times that we pay the lowest sub. I am beginning to doubtthe rationale though. The reason; a lot of household sub for one month but end up enjoying only a few days worth-many times not up to even 10days-because of our electricity situation. Example again is those that show ball. The pay hugely for a month but only show some sparsely games. The calculation is that we are actually paying more for what we get compared to many other countries. If they feel this my assumption is not true, why can't they just make it 'pay as u go'. That would be the logical and fair thing to do Lack of electricity is not dstv fault or problem |

Below is the cost of DSTV COMPACT BOUQUET in some selected African countries. All prices are in Naira/naira equivalent.
Nigeria: N6975 Zambia: N7,050 Angola: N7967 Kenya: N8,931 Ghana: N9,340 Liberia AND Sierra Leone :N9,700 South Africa: 9,098 Zimbabwe: N11,292
All prices are correct as at June 2020 Thanks o Jere!! Many idiots here will still say that your lying that these are not the prices. Yet they won't carry their phone and browse dstv website for all those countries. I say again, the problem is not with the pricing, its with your wages. All this is just a smokescreen. Venezuela that we all used to say is oil producing nation and petrol is N30 per litre, where did it lead them? The country bankrupted itself during the crude oil price crash of 2015, to the extent that the country could not afford to import food and medicines. People just can't reason here! Amazing how after we bash NASS for their corruption, you actually now think NASS has the masses at heart. Of all the issues we have DSTV is now the most important abi. So if DSTV paid $100m for license 3years ago when $1 was 360 and we are charged on that basis, can the price remain the same if $ is now 460?? Only an idiot won't appreciate that licenses are paid to Premier League in USD, not Naira. Its just basic sense guys! I keep saying that the problem with dstv, petrol, electricity, etc is because of our poor salaries ,not the pricing of these things. Because Nigerians are docile and won't stand up to the government to address the real issues, they fight tooth and nail for prices of everything to remain stupidly and unreasonably low. fairfora: Oh, they didn't die by drowning? Pardon me then.
But I can tell you there are a lot going on in government which many do not know anything about. Some people might just react blindly with emotions or sentiments but I don't care. I think I can explain briefly to you why i made those previous comments because i could see you had a few idea of safety.
When Gov fashola was in office, my UK-based friend came home to invest in lagos sea transport. He presented his proposal asking for just one route to enable him ferry 900 lagos passengers per trip across the lagoon. They had a deep conversation with him and the proposal almost sailed through when it was hijacked by one of them in government. Another company modified it and it was approved and the rest was history. We only heard the project had been executed by another company in the news with my friend's ideas being showcased by this company . Unfortunately, the said company could only afford a 22-passenger boat. My fried went back to the UK and nothing was done about it till Fashola left power. When Gov Ambode came to power, he came back to present his proposal to him and he welcomed the idea. But this time, he had secured patent rights with legal backing such that, nobody would plagiarize or modify it without due permission.
In a nut shell, the government of Ambode did not do much but promised to invite him in due course as it would be his second term agenda(but ambode only did 4 years). This proposal contained 2 major sea transport packages...one was to ferry over 100 cars at a time accross the lagoos and second, to ferry 900 passengers across the lagoon per trip as done in a renown company where he works in the UK as Manager. 2 different UK financiers were willing to invest their money in it. The following were among the on-board equipment and personnel:
Resuscitation and Emergency Kits Modern Life jackets with reflectors SOS kits and Panic Buttons AEDs First Aid Section 2 Drs on board and to be paid per shift alongside security personnel to ensure passengers safety. fare per trip was very good when compared to driving on land.
The ferries would be brand new and fully insured and this would have created jobs too. Sanwoolu invited my friend and had lengthy discussions with him. His proposal was almost getting to the stage of approval when my friend called and said, this people aren't ready for business. I asked why and he said they were discussing a sharing formula which he was not comfortable with, despite that he would be the one to finance it 100% , pay the necessary dues and taxes and he had to back off. That was the beginning of this year before covid-19 pandemic issues disrupted the whole thing. I hope he's called back.
I have gone to jetties with him on inspection b4. we also did an aerial survey together in a copter once. Among the boats seen that day, only one had passengers wearing life jackets...about 6 passengers. i guess it belongs to a popular oil company in lagos because i saw the logo on it. All others didn't observe the safety rules. This is not the first time a mishap would happen in lagos and claim lives and if you are resident here, you would understand. Sea transport is very safe, night or day but negligence and greed of our people always cause most of the mishaps. We do not have iceberg or physical blockades in our sea. if all is put in place, no single mishap would be recorded in years. I can easily believe this story. About two to three years ago when Ambode was making a lot of noise about water transport and just as that jetty at falomo was being completed, I went to their office at falomo to make enquiries. I was thinking of pulling a few friends together to start this ferry business. I figured it would be a good business, for many middle class people to get to their offices in marina, vi and apapa. I collected form and made enquires ,but it was clear that government wanted to run things by themselves instead of giving free, innovative and creative license to entrepreneurs. Government likes to try to do things by itself, because by so doing it can give favours to their political friends to corner this route and that route etc, instead of allowing pure innovators to operate within a regulatory framework that would be fair to all. Part of my governance plan for the industry was that LASWA would have an emergency boat that all operators would subscribe to. In the event of a mishap in the water, the pilot of the sjnking boat would send a distress signal for the emergency boat to come. Here we are today. As always government is incompetent in simple things. This is what the private sector would have thought of and implemented ,which would have given confidence to grow the industry. After this mishap, a lot of people will be put off using the the boats. |

xjiggy: I don't know why these substandard boats keep breaking the laws. They've been told not to move at night due to the hazardous waters and poor visibility yet they'll not comply. Sometimes they overload it and life jackets don't go round. Some passengers too will ignore safety precautions to the detrimentof others. We're just too reckless in this country. We do not place much value on life. To be honest probably everyone involved is to blame here. From the boat operator moving at night, to the passengers who agreed to use a boat in darkness, to the government that doesn't have good oversight. |

Know there are thousands and millions Nigerians that didnt eat two times today even some didnt eat. Will they no move(travel) a distance of 6km within their state. Do you recommend trekkin for such distance almost every day The solution to that is that wages need to go up. And that's why Nigerians should rise up instead of being docile. We should stop begging for the crumbs of subsidy and demand wages that enable people to eat at the table. |
