Fumns: Thank you very much, I appreciate it !so does this mean that one should book an appointment for visa even before applying to a school? and worst case scenario how long does one wait to be booked for an appointment in class B?
I also saw some people mentioning getting the visa in another african country, how feasible is this? Alas I don't know much about going through other African countries. But from comments on this thread, it appears to be a cumbersome process. And will typically take about a year (if you succeed). Feel free to search previous comments on the topic and maybe contact the authors. On your first question, yes, in order for a cat B applicant to stand a chance, they typically have to apply before obtaining admission. This is based on the current policy. I don't know if the German embassy will change policy again. |

Fumns: Good evening,
I am interested in applying for a program to start winter 2022 and the application window opens next year march . I have been seeing category A and B on reading the last few pages of this thread and I do not understand what it means.
I went to the german mission in nigeria's website and it says this {( holding a bachelor's degree with a grade of 1. Class ONLY issued AFTER January 1st, 2019 (for registrations until March 31st 2021 = issued AFTER January 1st 2018) and being accepted for a master's degree (also a DSH course-related admission to the master's program)}.
Please can someone explain this to me as it seems one must wait for up to year to get an interview date at the embassy or who exactly is category A for?
I look forward to a response.
Thank you very much If you are a PhD student, you belong to cat A If you graduated with a first class in your Bachelor’s degree within the last two years, you belong to CAT A If you have a German or EU govt funded scholarship, then you belong to cat A. Else you belong to cat B. |

Zosy: Hi I got an AD but my admission is on 2022 can I still attend the interview 10 months before school starts? I applied because I had 2021 admissions but it was postponed to 2022 before the AD arrived, I tried calling the school but they refused for me to start this year? Should I go or reapply? Mmm... This is a dicey one. If you already funded your block account or have a Sponsorship letter then I will advise you to go. You have nothing to lose. Its not likely that you'll get a 12 months visa to cover your new start date but maybe they can make some sort of arrangement whereby you don't have to wait hopelessly next year for an AD(if you're still interested in studying in Germany). If you have not blocked your account, then the best thing is probably to call the embassy and explain your situation. For both options, let them know that the school postponed your start date due to visa delays. All the best. |

My document doesn’t seem like it would get here in time and a blocked account in this economy.
Interview is next week Friday, category B.
Thank you in advance on your advice By document, do you mean sponsorship letter? If yes, then you have nothing to lose. You should simply pray, go for your interview and explain to them as best as you can. Hopefully they'll let you send it at a later date. If you mean block account, I believe you can get that done between now and next Friday if you act immediately. All the best. |

Congratulations to all who have received AD. I really need your opinions. I have been offered admission at the University of Bochum. I am under Category B, I applied to get AD in August. However, I have successfully completed my enrollment procedure. I have been asked to pay my semester contribution of about €340.
School is scheduled to start next week or thereabout. Should I pay the semester contribution or I should just wait? I have been given 2 weeks to pay and days have elapsed already from the 2 weeks. I really need your advice. If the two weeks elapses without the payment I will loose the admission. Are you allowed to run the programme entirely online, at least in the first semester? Is it possible to defer the admission until summer 2022? Are you exploring other options i.e other countries? |

Just make something. Produce stuff. Two years ago we were celebrating the opening of our first pencil factory. As sad as that sounds, I was able to stomach that. But I was shocked to learn earlier this year that Nigeria imports maize. Lots of maize. As in, we don't have enough maize to meet the demand of our livestock farmers. Maize that our ancestors have been cultivating for how long?!!! Maize!!! Ah! |

Solatium: I have full understanding of everything you stated even before you itemized them. i was only looking for something that i don't know unfortunately you did not state anything new sir,i am not being arrogant here. but let me make few corrections to some of the things you said.
1... Oil prices is not falling, it's actually going up,it was around $75 PB about 24hrs ago.
2... i agree we don't earn enough to balance our trading sheet and we can never earn enough,do you know why? Remittance from abroad are routed through black market because you get a higher exchange figure when you do sell to them, that singular act alone has wiped off about 40% of your forex from the system, the remaining ones have to come from what is declared legally and whatever most people get from the legal means are divided into 2 and a part sold for profit at the black market while the rest is used for intending purpose, what do you think will happen when we do such? where will the replacement comes from if we all go to the black market to sell? of course you will go to the same black market to buy at any rate when you need them. we are all involved in these .
3.... You can not even have enough dollar in circulation even if our legal tender is American Dollar,it's simple economic term, the more currency you have in circulation the higher your inflammation,we do not even have enough naira to spend at every giving time. Your o level economic subject an answer that when you flip to that page that talks about how you control excess liquidity which part of (a) OMO open market operations (b) Stock trading (c) withdrawal of cash from circulation and what have you.
I can tell you for free that their is no way your forex needs will keep jumping exponentially every week when the population remain almost the same within the same period.
Speculators which Black market and Abokifx belongs to that category are the major problem It is OK if you don't learn anything new from my post. Hopefully, a few others will. Your 3 'corrections' are incorrect. And I hope you're arguing in good faith, not just for argument's sake. I will address them: 1. Please plot a chart of crude prices over the last 2 years (pre-covid to date) when the Naira was trading at 360 to the dollar and let's see. You cannot claim higher prices based on little fluctuations that happened in 24 hrs or a week. 2. The only question you need to ask yourself is this: what makes the black market to attractive? Why do people prefer to sell their remittances at the black market? Why is there a demand for dollars in the black market? You may please refer to my previous post for the answer. 3. This is simply not true. What do you mean by 'you cannot have enough dollars in circulation'? Both the Pound and Euro are worth more than the dollar. Surely, this means the UK and EU have more than enough dollars (relative to their respective currencies). Finally, your fx needs can jump exponentially. It is not about population. It is about demand and supply. It happened in Zimbabwe. It happened in Venezuela. It happens in all countries where imports continue to outstrip exports while government depletes foreign reserves. Are we saying that we don't have speculators? Of course we do. But they are not THE major problem. In fact, I'd say they are merely a symptom of the problem. If we had enough dollars, speculators would be out of jobs. |

Solatium: kindly educate us if you have a better opinion,do not forget to tag me to such contribution.thank you Good evening. I do not have anything to add to what jjman2322 and philip0906 have said so far. But I'll summarise: When businesses approach Nigerian banks for dollars to import stuff (via letters of credit etc), the transactions still need to be settled in dollars i.e Nigerian banks will have to remit dollars to the correspondent banks, who will then remit to the suppliers abroad. We earn dollars from exports. When we buy imported goods we pay in dollars (or some other prominent foreign currency). The dollars we earn is far below what we need to import stuff, because we don't export a lot of stuff. So, Emzor, for instance , would need lots of dollars to buy raw materials, but sells their products locally in Naira. Our major source of dollars is crude but unfortunately crude prices have gone down. Secondly, we still spend a lot of the dollars buying back refined petroleum since we dont have functioning refineries. Which is why everyone has been waiting for Dangote to finish his refinery (but that is a story for another day) So we dont have enough dollars. Therefore CBN rations what we have. If you walk into a bank and request for dollars to import stuff, the bank will 'bid' on your behalf. You may not get your full required amount in 6 months. So many businesses take the little that cbn gives them and source for the rest in the black market. Demand and supply. Demand goes up while supply remains unchanged. Therefore price goes up. |

TimeSpaceWizard: To solve Nigeria's problem you must shut down bdc and convert all fx to local currency. Full stop.
Your fx need is not a cash call, it is handled by correspondence banks in the countries you are importing from. And how do you Nigerian banks settle the correspondent banks? In Naira? With respect, I don't think you fully understand how these things work. |
Business › Re: CBN Shuts Down AbokiFX Bank Accounts by CooKeed(m): 5:49pm On Sep 16, 2021 |
TimeSpaceWizard: You do not need bdc to import anything. You do not nerd dorm account to import anything. As a matter of fact I am sending a memo to CBN today to consider converting all dorm reserves to naira at CBN rate and closure of all bdc.
You do not need to source for usd to import, it is only in Nigeria you get all these parallel fx system. Simply pay your naira and get the dollars from bank at CBN rate to be paid out.
Having bdc and dorm accts destroyed Nigeria fx sector and must be stopped.
Now everyone is just scamming their way to glory under the pretext of affiliate marketing and importation and manufacturing. I am manufacture 3 products and I have businesses offshore too.
I am not a novice If you believe you can walk into a bank and ask for any amount of dollars to import stuff, then you're clearly a novice. |

jjman2322: This is why a good business school is needed in Nigeria.. People dont understand Economics 101
First of all, CBN official rate is like 410, so converting any FX inflow to naira means you will get it at 410... Now let me ask you, your uncle in USA has $10,000 for you. Will you tell him to wire the $10,000 to nigeria for N4,100,000, or will you find a third party who needs to pay his supplier in China,India, and sell it to him for 550 (N5,500,000) ? This is whats basically happening.
As someone in the manufacturing, let me try and explain whats going on. There is severe shortage of USD. Lets assume you need raw materials worth $500,000 for the month, you may be lucky to get $5,000 in a month from your bank/cbn (through LC OR BILL FOR COLLECTION), so you now have to go to blackmarket for the rest.
Abokifx just publishes prevailing rate.. Abokifx is irrelevant when it comes to demand and supply.. Im too tired to explain more, but the solution is simple.. CBN needs to provide more USD to the big companies who need it, and the black market price (REAL DOLLAR PRICE) will drop..
The reason why goods are going up in prices (TV, PHONE, AC, FOOD, etc), even though officially dollar is 410, is because NOBODY IS GETTING 410, or even when they do its minimal.. Yes you can get PTA (Travel allowance) from your bank, but thats only like $4000.
The real problem is when as a manufacturer you need $1m.. Good luck getting that in 10 years....
There is real demand for USD from local companies here for at least $500M a day, and CBN is barely giving 10% of that.. See the problem
How much do you think NESTLE spends daily on USD, or Nigerian breweries... Quick example, indomie is made with tapioca starch, Potasium & sodium carbonate, sodium tripolyphosphate, riboflavin which are imported.. They must probably use $millions weekly just for import... So they go to black market = price jump in finished product... Hope i made some sense.. Here is someone who gets it. I salute you for being patient enough to explain the situation. But I'm sorry to tell you that majority on this thread will not (or choose not to) understand. The law of demand and supply is so basic, but many fail to understand it. Can you imagine? Someone said it is good for CBN to shut Abokifx down so that we can be buying dollars at the official rate of 410. As if abokifx is stopping CBN from selling at whatever price they like. Another person said CBN should forcefully convert all fcy in dom accounts to naira. How much is all the change in individial Nigerian dom accounts to meet he huge demand by manufacturing companies? The problem is that we export too little. We produce too little raw materials and must source everything from abroad. In dollars. I am honestly very worried. CBN's actions in the past few months looks like panic reaction. A new irrational reation every week. A country's central bank should not be in panic mode. I am worried. |

People don't think about you as much as you think they do. Everyone is preoccupied with themselves. Many people realise this around age 40. Then they wish they'd known earlier, and had given themselves permission to fully express themsleves. You are afraid. Afraid or saying the wrong things, or coming off as stupid, of getting laughed at, of making mistakes. Get over yourself. I promise you, none of your colleagues spends 30 minutes a day thinking about the funny tie you wore last week, or that you know little of Singapore's econony, or the fact that you don't know the title of Eminem's latest album. I mean this in a nice way, but you're not that important to them. You are important to YOU. So, value YOU. And even in the unlikely event that you're the hottest topic for office gossip, then Bleep them all! Learn stuff, do stuff. If you find something interesting, do it. If you find someone interesting, talk to them. Guess what, people generally value people who value themselves. If you value yourself, it shows. It just shows. People can sense it. And it is damn attractive. People have advised you to learn an instrument or do this and that. Good, but don't do it because you want to be liked. If you think playing a guitar is fun, learn it. If you enjoy drinking alcohol, drink it. (pls be mindful of your health) If you enjoy running and you live in Lagos, train for the annual Access Bank marathon. Say what you think. Do what you feel like doing. Make a fool of yourself, yes. You will make mistakes, but trust me, it's not as bad as your brain makes you think it is. You see all those 'confident' people? They all second-guess themselves. Yes, including the late Steve Jobs and Obama. But they learnt over time that no matter what happens they 'got it'. And you got it too if you give yourself permission to be human. To be human is to be imperfect. Instagram is feeding you lies. Maybe your parents didn't instil confidence in you, and now you have a slower start than some of your peers. Some of us have to fight inner battles to get there, but we can catch up. You'll hopefully do better than your parents, but you too will not be a perfect parent. A time comes when you realise that you are the captain of your ship, not your parents, not your boss, not your pastor. Then you have become a true adult. Lastly, remeber that you're dying. If you live to be 80, then you'd have lived for about 4,000 weeks. You should not waste one week stressing about what Kunle in Accounting thinks of you. You're 21. Don't leave things undone and words unsaid because of how others would perceive it. 20 years from now, that embarrassing situation you're avoiding now would be very inconsequential. Biko, go on an embarrass yourself. Allow yourself to be imperfect. |

The quote above came with the AD registration confirmation email back in June. Is it advisable to cancel and re-register for the AD? Thanks again I won't advise you to cancel. Again, nothing is certain cos the communication from the consulate is not clear. On one hand they say the waiting period is now 12 months. On the other hand they say you should cancel if you dont get an AD before your start date. And it makes no sense to book 12 months ahead. Anyway, we've recently seen a few people who got ADs within 2 months of booking under Cat B. So anything is possible. |
