melodyogonna: Yesterday I watched a documentary on this conflict. The masses support Taliban, they hate the Americans. That is the only reason the Taliban can sustain fighting for 20 years. America needs to learn when they're not needed on time, in their bid to save face and show power they end up disgracing themselves. Pls share title of the documentary. Will like to check it out |

Ofactore: Yo. Why are you using mawista? Are you over 30? Or you're only applying for travel insurance?
If you're trying to get student insurance, and you're under 30, I strongly recommend public health insurance.
There's a lot private doesn't cover and which you wouldn't be aware of till it causes an issue, hence why it's cheaper
Also, if you start your study with private insurance, you can not use public until the end of your entire study.
Do check again before you decide
P.S - I used Barmer Health Insurance Is it compulsory for 30+ to use private insurance? What do you advise? |

Krismas:
Very naive submission. If the entire Scotland had voted to leave, they wud all have been chained down by now. Take d case of Spain as example. Where the Catalonias voted to leave. Wot is the aftermath? Then Taiwan has been separated for 60yrs u say? Do u know how long Hong Kong was separated from China, 500yrs! Still they got it back. Wot of Macau? 500yrs they got it! Wot is 60yrs? Very naive submission, you say? It would interest you to know that the referendum was with the consent of the UK government. Again, I say, if they'd voted to leave, Scotland would be an independent country today. 500 years? You should tell me where you get these figures from. Hong Kong was ceded to Britain in 1842. Portugal agreed to transfer Macau to China in 1999.The United Kingdom agreed to transfer Hong Kong to China in 1997 and China agreed to guarantee Hong Kong and Macau's economic and political systems for 50 years after the transfer. We both known that China has not kept that promise. Quite frankly, we can debate that China has the right to dishonour its promise to the British and the Portuguese. After all, they were colonialists with selfish ambitions. But we are talking about people here. People who were born in, and live under a different economic and political system. You can't just come and shove communism down their throat. My opinion on Catalonia remains the same. If the Catalonians want to be independent, it is their right. |

Perfectbeing: No sovereign nation would just allow a part of it to secede without a fight. This is for those people that say cessation is not war. This Taiwan were talking about has been governed separately for well over 60 years. We have a whole generation of people who have never lived under Chinese rule. Democracy is their reality. And you expect them to just submit to the Chinese? Cessation is not war. It is self determination, which is a right enshrined in the charter of the United Nations. This is 2021 for God's sake. Just recently, in 2014 the Scottish people of the United Kingdom held a referendum. Majority voted to remain in the UK. Best believe, if they had chosen to leave the UK, Scotland would be an independent country now. |

engrchykae: double standard at work, why not go through referendum which is more modern and civilized? The UN doesn't care about ambazonians who need independence but suddenly care about hong Kong and Taiwan simply because they need a friend around an enemy called China There was in fact a referendum in Crimea, with 97% voting to be integrated with Russia. Although, that referendum was very controversial. But that is a different story entirely. Now, I'm an not discussing what is moral or right in this situation. I am simply saying that in today's world China cannot realistically reunite with Taiwan because one, Taiwanese people overwhelmingly do not want to be united with China. Two, the US is a strong ally. And the US is a far superior military power than China. Three, just like you said, the US wants a friend around an enemy. And very importantly, Taiwan is an eager friend. Things may change in the far future, this is the reality of today. And the longer it takes, the lower the chances of reunification. Maybe when China evolves into a true democratic nation and becomes a wealthy and highly developed society like Taiwan. |

dmbb: That means America is not untouchable but who did you ever see attacked China or Russia as of recent and went scot free? Nobody can try that suicide Of course nobody is untouchable. Israel is not untouchable, but you cannot deny that it has demonstrated superior military power against Hamas. I think you are asking the wrong question. The question should be "which nation or organisation attacked the US, and gone scot free?" Russia is a military super power. China is a military super power. But the US is far superior to both of them, or any other nation for that matter. The scale at which the US projects its military power around the world is simply mind boggling. |

WhatCanIsay: America is capitalist.
China is capitalist.
Government is abstract; the people are the manifestations of the government. For the companies to start exploring and investing in China, the American government gave a go ahead order. It's not just a decision made individually. Some companies in the earlier times even enjoyed incentives for such investment.
America gained from it, China developed from it. It could be argued that China made more out of it, which ain't bad.
So as I said earlier, America opened up China. Perhaps we should agree to disagree. Well, there's capitalism in China no doubt. But the government involves itself in enterprise. We cannot call it 'fully' capitalist. But then there is no full capitalism anywhere in the world. In any case, the US has become the symbol of capitalism around the world. As far as capitalism is concerned the US is far ahead. Two of the top 5 companies in the world (by revenue) are owned by the Chinese govt. And with the way the Chinese government routinely meddles into the affairs of private businesses (Ali baba being a recent example) I would be reluctant to call it a capitalist nation, at least not on par with the US or other western democracies. Mind you, this is not an endorsement of any economic system. I'm just saying it as it is. I agree that if the US prevented it's companies from doing business in China, then they wouldn't do business in China. But 'permitting' your companies to do business does not equate to the US 'opening up China' . China opened itself up and businesses took advantage of an opportunity for greater profit (as businesses typically do). And like you said, they both benefitted from it. Just as business should be. |

dmbb: Tell me what happened? Why are you worshipping America? Worshipping America is one thing. Talking facts is an entirely different thing. World powers come and go. There was the time of the British, the Romans, the French etc. Right now it is the time of the US. We have to admit that the US is by far the greatest military power at this present time. And it looks like they will be for a long, long time. If you're referring to the recent attack earlier this month, then I'd say we have to wait and see. Thankfully, no lives were lost it that attack, I believe. But I will remind you that when Iran attacked the US embassy in Baghdad in December 2019 the US killed Iran's military general. Not just a random general, but someone who is considered a right hand man to their ruler. And then Iran mistakenly shut down an Ukrainian passenger plane. |

WhatCanIsay: The reason you gave on Africa is as wrong as wrong can be.
Ya it is business, and business is meant to benefit both parties. Governments are always on the lookout for such businesses, for the development of their nations.
It's not easy for any nation to invest trillion of dollars on another nation. America has done so globally. I'm not saying we should worship them, but simply saying we should understand the reality, and not crucify them at every given point.
That Europe is as it is today is with no thanks to America. It was business. If Nigeria makes itself attractive to foreign investors, they will come come. Fix infrastructure, have a young well-educated pupulation and embrace business-friendly policies. They will come. Everyone wants to manufacture cheap and sell at a high margin. These trillions you talk about were invested by private companies. The US is a capitalist nation. Its government does not run businesses. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Chinese Military Warns US Is Playing With Fire & Pledges To Crush Taiwan(Pix) by CooKeed(m): 5:17pm On Jul 31, 2021 |
WhatCanIsay: American companies were able to do business there because of government policy. Nixon opened up China to the world, American companies has one hundred and one countries to situate their companies.
American government was deliberate in industrializing China: a lot of policies were opened not just for economic reasons but also for educational purposes. Aids were given and beneficial steps taken towards waking up the "dragon".
Historically America has done a lot of damages, but we must always remember that the good she has done still keeps the world going in a lot of places globally. No other nation has done as much as that. The US wan not being benevolent. It was simply business. Same happened in India with the tech jobs, call centres and whatnot. The reason why it hasn't happened in Africa is the lack of a large educated population. |

dermmy: Oh yes..That reputational damage is what is still holding China back. And at this point i believe China does not care. China has offered the one-country two systems but Taiwan has refused it. A formal move towards independence is what China won't accept. China has signaled that.
You believe U.S. would go to war against China over Taiwan? When Taiwan sealed a mutual defence treaty with U.S in 1954 America gave the country conditions. Kinmen and Matsu Islands were not part of the defence provision so China was able to shell them at will during the 2nd Taiwan strait crisis, America told Chiang Kai Shek it won't come to Taiwan defence if it was Taiwan that attacked China first. There was a time Chian Kai-Shek was urging America to help him take China back but U.S. refused all because it was avoiding a military entanglement with China. Not that U.S feared China but it believed a war with China over Taiwan does not worth it and China was not even a military power then.
Taiwanese leaders are not even sure if U.S. would come to their rescue. And I believe China is not ready to invade now all these military drills and threat are attempt to coerce Taiwan into accepting the one-country two systems. I don't think they care much about reputational damage abroad. Reputational damage at home, maybe. Cos they will likely lose the war. The US will not sit back and allow China overrun Taiwan. And after what happened in Hong Kong, of course, Taiwan, a democratic society, will never accept the one nation, two systems bait. The only option is to take Taiwan by force. But they can't win. One, Taiwan has allies, strong allies. Two, majority of the local population do not want to be integrated with China. Unless China wants to reign over ashes (like Daenerys in Game of thrones), the status quo will be maintained for a long long time to come. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Chinese Military Warns US Is Playing With Fire & Pledges To Crush Taiwan(Pix) by CooKeed(m): 4:56pm On Jul 31, 2021 |
dermmy: U.S. won't do nothing if China invades Taiwan the only thing it can do is send Taiwan equipments. Ask yourself this question is U.S. willing to engage a Peer-Nuclear power over a small Island that it does not have sovereign right over? The mutual defence treaty between U.S and Taiwan Sino-American Mutual Defence Treaty was terminated by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 and the offshoot of the defence pact Taiwan Relations Act has no mutual defence clause.
But Japan is what i don't know cause Japan's southern Ryukyu Islands chain are closer to Taiwan than the Japanese mainland and much of Japan's export and import passes through the strait. Japan believes a Taiwan controlled by China would affect the free flow of commodities that pass through the Taiwan strait so Japan has a keen interest in the future of the country and has signaled it has an obligation to help the country should China invade. I don't know about the future o. But in today's world, the US will not sit back and watch China take Taiwan. At least for the sake of reputation. Taiwan has bent over backwards for the sake of their alliance with the US. Will the US now turn its back on the day of trouble? What signal would will they be sending to their allies if they do nothing? What message will they be sending to South Korea, for example? That the US cannot be trusted to have your back? In this supremacy battle, reputation is important. |
