PoliticsWike To PDP NWC- Allow Us Oversee Anambra Congress And Guber Primary by Ctorch(op): 7:07pm On Feb 08, 2021
GOV WIKE TELLS PDP NWC TO ALLOW GOVERNORS OVERSEE ANAMBRA CONGRESSES, GUBER PRIMARY

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has advised the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to allow governors supervise the conduct of congresses and governorship primary in Anambra State.
He said winning the November governorship election in Anambra is critical to the PDP and concerted effort must be made to ensure that nobody is alienated in the processes leading to the election of the party’s flagbearer.
The Rivers State governor made this remark while addressing PDP leaders in the South East during a meeting held in Enugu on Monday to reconcile Anambra stakeholders ahead of the November election.

He explained that he was in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State to commiserate with Governor Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and former Deputy Senate President, Dr Ike Ekeremadu, over the death of the State’s former Commissioner of Transport, Mathias Ekweremadu, but was notified of the meeting by the State governor who also urged to stop by and speak to delegates at the Government House.
Governor Wike stated that the November election offers the PDP a rare opportunity to retake Anambra State and consolidate the party’s grip in the South East geopolitical zone. And to achieve this, the governor said people must be willing to make sacrifices in the overall interest of the PDP.
"Let us have party interest, not group interest and put everything aside. Anambra use to be a PDP state but because of wrangling and not giving in, that is what has made PDP to lose Anambra. Only two States in the South East which are Enugu and Abia are PDP today. If we add Anambra, it is a good boost for us.”
He warned that if PDP fails to win Anambra state it will not augur well for the party particularly in the South East. To this, he urged the National Working Committee of the party to allow governors to oversee both the conduct of congresses and governorship primary in Anambra.

“It must be done transparently. Whether the Congresses or the primary itself, the governors will be in charge to come and do the election.”
He said adherence to the suggestion that PDP state governors be allowed to oversee the conduct of the congresses and primary will serve as a test case to determine whether the National Working Committee is serious about PDP winning Anambra election.
Governor Wike specially charged the PDP National Organising Secretary, Col Austin Akobundu (rtd), who was present at the meeting, to ensure that processes leading to election of a PDP candidate in Anambra is done transparently to give people confidence that the party means well for all.
“You have a critical role. Luckily you're from South East, tell them that look if we lose Anambra, there is problem for us in the South East. And You know that APC is coming out strong to fight in Anambra State. So let us work together.”

The Rivers state governor assured the delegates that PDP governors will support the party in Anambra state to win the November election. According to him: “All of us are ready to give Anambra that support to win this election.”
Governor Wike appealed to those in court to withdraw their suit in the interest of the PDP. He further urged contending factions in Anambra State to reconcile and work in unison.
“In the name of God, everybody keep your ego, part of the problem is ego, let us work as a team and deliver PDP.”

Present at the meeting were Governor Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; former Senate President and Secretary to the Federal Government, Anyim Pius Anyim; former Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Iyom Josephine Anenih , others are PDP Vice presidential candidate in 2019, Peter Obi, former Governor of Ebonyi ,Sam Egwu, former Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha.

HEALTHWHO delists Nigeria from African countries to receive COVID-19 vaccine

Published 1 hour ago on February 6, 2021By Henry Iheanacho

Nigeria has failed to be shortlisted by the World Health Organisation-led COVAX global initiative for the global Pfizer vaccines following the country’s inability to meet the standard requirement of being able to store the vaccines at the required -70 degrees Celsius.

Director, WHO, African Region, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, speaking at a virtual press conference, said only four African countries were shortlisted for the Pfizer vaccine out of the 13 that applied, The PUNCH reports.

This comes as the federal government had stated that it was expected to receive 100,000 doses through the COVAX initiative, which was set up to ensure rapid and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all countries, regardless of income level.

The four that were shortlisted, are; South Africa, Tunisia, Rwanda and Cape Verde.

Moeti said Nigeria and the eight other African countries will not be getting it yet because WHO could not risk the Pfizer vaccines being wasted.

She said; “Around 320,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine have been allocated to four African countries – Cape Verde, Rwanda, South Africa and Tunisia. This vaccine has received WHO Emergency Use Listing but requires countries to be able to store and distribute doses at minus 70 degrees Celsius.

“To access an initial limited volume of Pfizer vaccine, countries were invited to submit proposals. Thirteen African countries submitted proposals and were evaluated by a multi-agency committee based on current mortality rates, new cases and trends, and the capacity to handle the ultra-cold chain needs of the vaccine.

This announcement allows countries to fine-tune their planning for COVID-19 immunisation campaigns. We urge African nations to ramp up readiness and finalise their national vaccine deployment plans. Regulatory processes, cold chain systems and distribution plans need to be in place to ensure vaccines are safely expedited from ports of entry to delivery. We can’t afford to waste a single dose.”

PoliticsArewa Group Asks Abiodun, Ogun Governor To Resign, Calls Igboho Fake Activist by Ctorch(op): 10:17pm On Feb 05, 2021
Arewa United Consultative Forum has asked the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to resign for what it called his failure to secure and protect the people in his state.

The group went further to condemn the activities of Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, for allegedly destroying Fulani herdsmen settlements in the state early this week.

This was contained in a statement issued by the AUCF National President, Alhaji Shuaibu Dansudu, in Lagos on Thursday.

The group said, “Governor Abiodun remains the Chief Security Officer of the state, but it is disappointing that he could not secure his state, and had to invite someone from Oyo State to come and do the job for him.

“We, therefore, call on the governor to resign his position since it appears he is not capable of functioning in that capacity. If he fails to resign, the Federal Government should withdraw his security apparatus.”

Concerning Igboho, AUCF described him as a fake activist, saying that genuine activists don’t take the law into their own hands by attacking defenceless persons.

The group admitted that there might be some criminal elements among the Fulani, just like any other tribe, but insisted that not all Fulani people could be regarded as lawless.

It said some lawful Fulani people are also victims of the killer herdsmen, adding that some politicians are using the Fulani herdsmen’s criminal activities as antics to destroy the country’s unity.

“If Igboho can arrest and even kill the real criminal herdsmen, we won’t complain, we might even invite him to the North to help us fight the criminals and bandits,” the group said.

CrimeBarber Arrested In Kano For Giving Customers Haircuts That 'offend' Islam by Ctorch(op): 3:03pm On Feb 03, 2021
Kano State Hisbah Corps has arrested a barber from Benue State, Elijah Ode, for allegedly giving his customers haircuts which offend the Islamic faith in the Sabongari area of the state.

It was learnt that the religious police force reportedly arraigned Ode on Tuesday and also had him remanded.

According to a Benue State activist, Smith Akoko, who first brought the matter to the attention of Nigerians, the barber, who is also a student, was arrested last Wednesday, after two of his customers were caught with hairstyles deemed blasphemous to the Islamic religion.

His cousin, Sunday Ukenya, who confirmed the incident to Akoko, said the Hisbah corps arraigned Elijah in court on Tuesday, February 2, and thereafter remanded him in prison.

It is not clear yet when his trial would resume.

Elijah Ode, a resident of Kano from Adum East, Obi Local Government Area of Benue State, who combines his barbing vocation with his studies, was accused by the Islamic police of committing blasphemy in the cause of his work as a barber.

According to eyewitnesses, Elijah, who is well patronised by young people for possessing exceptional skills in giving trendy haircuts, attracted the wrath of the extremists last Wednesday when two of his customers were tortured to stupour for having haircuts claimed to be blasphemous to the Islam.

Thereupon, Elijah was traced to his barbershop, where he was arrested for complicity, and put in police detention with the two customers last week.

According to information obtained from a family member, Ode did not design the hairstyles with the intention to provoke.

The source said, “He is only being innovative and to improve on his work, which he used to eke out a living for himself and pay his fees at his tertiary institution of study in Kano, where he sponsors himself.
“The case is already in the court of law at the wish of the aggrieved Muslims with the first session heard yesterday. But all efforts by the young barber's lawyer to bail him proved abortive because of the claim that it is a major case and therefore not bailable.

“At the moment, the family has run out of hope, soliciting intercessory prayers as the reality of incarceration stares Elijah in the face.”

PoliticsAnambra State Is Not Imo State, PDP Tells APC. by Ctorch(op): 12:10pm On Jan 31, 2021
Anambra is not Imo State, PDP chairman tells Uzodimma.

The Chairman, Anambra State Chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Ndubuisi Nwobu, has described as daydreaming the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) boast that it would capture the state in the November 6, gubernatorial poll.

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, who is also the leader of APC in Southeast, had declared that his party would win the governorship election as a starting point for its quest to clinch the APC presidential ticket in 2023.

But, Nwobu told The Guardian that his party decided not to join issues with Uzodimma after the Southeast APC zonal stakeholders’ meeting, because the party’s zonal leader’s utterances did not reflect the true political realities in Anambra State.

He recalled Uzodimma’s claim that he would employ “seen and unseen” forces to capture Anambra, saying that come November 6, he would know that Anambra is not Imo State.

“I think he must have been alluding to the fact that the Supreme Court awarded him the governorship of Imo State. Anybody in his position can boast to high heavens. He was being guided by his emergence as governor by a Supreme Court’s pronouncement. But, he should know that Anambra is not Imo State.

“Anambra governorship would be settled on the field. There would not be need for a second ballot. After the voters have made their choice, people like Hope Uzodimma would find out that there is no room for the court to entertain any drama,” Nwobu declared.

The PDP chieftain wondered how Uzodimma believes that APC with its “bad leadership credentials, destruction of the economy and spiraling insecurity,” could come to Anambra State and win election, where the people have already made up their minds on how to vote.

On the issue of pending litigations over the leadership of PDP in the state, Nwobu disclosed that having emerged from properly organised congress, there was no issue as to who was the party chairman in Anambra State.

He disclosed that one of the two cases at the appellate court was instituted by protégés of Chris Ubah, adding both cases were among frivolous litigations the zonal working committee urged the litigants to withdraw.

Nwobu explained that it was out of the erroneous belief by some misguided politicians that the judiciary was corrupt that all manner of documents could be taken to court in an attempt to hoodwink judges.

Speaking on the large number of billionaire governorship aspirants in the party, Nwobu assured that unlike in recent past, Anambra PDP would not have parallel governorship primary.

“There are 13 governorship aspirants and counting. There won’t be a parallel governorship primary in PDP. We are focused and determined to see that we bounce back in the state,” he said.

Sidelining Igbos In Service Chief Appointments No longer Acceptable To Us-Northern Elders

Northern Elders Knock Buhari Over Service Chiefs’ Appointments.

A group of Northern elders have commended President Muhammadu Buhari for finally taking action by sacking the nation’s service chiefs and appointing new ones in their stead.

They, however, condemned the president for excluding South East from the appointments, saying the president’s action against the Igbo nation was inimical to the unity and one-Nigeria project of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

The elders, under the aegis of the Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development (CNEPD), urged the president to balance the equation by reviewing the appointments to reflect the nation’s federal character principle.

The elders, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja and signed by their National Coordinator, Engr. Zana Goni, also urged President Buhari to review the appointment of the military heads to reflect fairness and equity.

The group, which had relentlessly clamoured for the sack of the service chiefs over worsening insecurity in the country and perceived low morale in the military following tenure elongation of the former security heads, thanked President Buhari for eventually taking action by relieving them.

“We completely throw our weight behind Ohanaeze Ndigbo on their position over the appointments of the new service chiefs.

“We appeal to Mr President for a review of the appointments to accommodate our Igbo brothers from the South East in line with the federal character principle of the country,” they said.

They added that the sacking of the former service chiefs by Mr President and the reaction of Nigerians showed that the president listened to the clarion call by Nigerians to that effect.

“However, the composition of the service chiefs greeted us with mixed feelings and sincere concerns.

“We strongly believe that the list does not meet a fair list as it is lacking in fairness, justice, and equity to the south easterners.

“We thought some lessons would have been learnt by the Presidency by now that the Igbos too, are also Nigerians and deserve to be fairly and godly treated.

“How can there be the appointment of two sets of service chiefs without any Igbo person among them?

“Our careful checks revealed that Igbos have senior and qualified military officers in the Navy, Army, and Airforce who are serving faithfully in their various capacities.

“We have seen how the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and several Igbo groups are fighting Nnamdi Kanu and his group, the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on a daily basis because they believe and act one Nigeria,” they insisted.

They, therefore, urged the President to have a retrospection over this his latest appointments and do the needful by appointing a service chief from the South-east.

CrimeResidents Lament As Policemen, Hoodlums Damage Ogun Community Road by Ctorch(op): 9:44pm On Jan 24, 2021
Residents of Feru community in the Ado-Odo Local Government Area of Ogun State have bemoaned the actions of some officers of the Nigeria Police Force who escorted some thugs and land grabbers to damage the road connecting the community to town.

The residents were left bewildered when some hoodlums used heavy construction equipment to damage the road linking the community to Itele, Idi-Iroko, Atan and other major economic hubs of the state, in the presence of some heavily armed policemen.

According to the residents, the policemen are attached to the Itele and Sango-Ota police divisions.

The residents said the road was constructed by one Alhaji Gbenga Ibuoye of Gbenga Ibuoye Nigeria Limited in 2019 after his company was granted the licence to operate a small scale mining site in Feru.

They lamented that the destruction of the road will not only hamper economic activities in the community but also make them vulnerable to attacks by gunmen.

The local head (Baale) of Lafenwa, Itele, Mr Gafaru Tijani, said the road that was damaged was of immense benefit to all the people living within the area as he urged the Ogun State Commissioner of Police to intervene and ensure police officers indicted are reprimanded.

He said, “We want the government to bring to justice the perpetrators of the act of vandalism. The road has been helpful to us as our people were able to transport our farm produce to the town to trade.”

On his part, the local head (Baale) of Feru village, Mr Mutui Adeyemi, described the road vandalism as a criminal act.

“Why should the road constructed by an individual that benefits the whole community be maliciously damaged by land grabbers?” he asked.

He appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure all officers involved in the vandalism of the sections of the road should be made to face the law.

Ibuoye, whose mining firm constructed the road, alleged that some influential individuals in the state are keen on hijacking his mining site for themselves.

He stated that the individuals connived with the police to take over his land, claiming it belongs to them.

Ibuoye said, “I purchased these 19 acres of land from the families of Gbadamosi Onigbeyin, Odunifa Faloun, and Falola and proceeded to obtain a red copy from the office of the Surveyor-General.

“After I constructed the road, some land grabbers led by one Kazeem Oluomo, Nuru Adeoye, Idowu Akanle and others suddenly surfaced out of the blues to challenge our rights over the land, claiming to be the legitimate owner even without a proof to justify such claims.

“They boasted about having the backing of a top police officer in the community, who they all refer to as Area Commander Monday Agbonika.

“Agbonika has been sending officers to harass us and making it difficult for us to operate smoothly despite that I have a court judgment and certified true ownership of the lands.”

Confirming the deployment of police officers to the community, the Area Commander, ACP Muyideen Obe, while speaking to journalists, said the officers were sent to take over the mining site belonging to Ibuoye.

He denied having knowledge of the road vandalism, noting that there was a directive from the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, to take over the mining site.

“Nobody vandalised it. There was a court order with a possession order that that place is taken, so that directive came from the Inspector General of Police.

Policemen went there, and then decided to cut that place because if somebody said he has a mining licence, does he have possession over that land? Does he have authority and possession over that property?

“I don’t know who has briefed you; (but) it is a directive from the Inspector General of Police that that possession order must be carried out,” ACP Obe said.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun, when contacted, said he had not been briefed about the matter but promised that an investigation would be launched.

PoliticsImo Teachers Demand 10-month Pay Before Resumption by Ctorch(op): 6:51pm On Jan 20, 2021
Except their alleged 10-month backlog is cleared, Imo teachers may not resume on January 25 as directed by the state government. The threat was contained in a statement issued yesterday by secretary-general of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Godwin Asogwa, in Owerri.

“The labourer deserves his wage. Imo teachers cannot teach with empty stomach,” he stated. The tutors also demanded that basic teaching tools, including secure school compounds with perimeter fencing, toilets, laboratories and subventions be provided for all of the 300 secondary schools and about 645 primary schools that dot the 27 councils of the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Bernard Ikegwuoha had, at the weekend, directed both private and public learning institution to resume next Monday following their closure last month to check the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. He had also during a live programme on Monday in the state capital, accused some teachers of having double pay points, which prompted cancellations

At the time of filing this report, the commissioner was yet to respond to the text message sent to him on the issue. Besides, Governor Hope Uzodimma had directed publication of workers paid early this month in some tabloids, insisting that all genuine employees had been settled. He accused most workers of double salary points, leading to the deletion of their names from payroll.

The governor added that the very few with proven issues had been advised to represent their case for resolution.
