PoliticsWe’re Our Own Problem, Not Buhari ― Ex-iyc President Counsel Ijaws by Ctorch(op): 10:23am On Oct 09, 2020
Former President of the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Oweilaemi Pereotubo has counseled his Ijaw kinsmen from the Niger Delta region that they should stop seeing President Muhammadu Buhari as their problem stating that the Ijaws are their own problem.

Pereotubo in a statement yesterday, also ask the Ijaws to expunge themselves of “hate, blackmail, deceit and sycophancy as well as worrisomely disunity and pull him down syndrome.”

He said: “How can we be this divided as a people in every fronts and expect President Buhari or the system to take us serious?

“How do you expect Buhari to take you serious when you place your personal political affiliations above our collective cultural affinity and development?

“Ijaws are fighting each other wherever they find themselves in as much as they are not in the same political association. Unlike other regions that places their well-being and coexistence above their individual political parties and self aggrandizement. Emulate others before it is too late.

“I tell you for free, if the ijaw race is truly and or genuinely united, no leader born of a woman that will not reference us as a people in building an egalitarian society.”

PoliticsTinubu Pumped N1 Billion Into The Nation Newspaper, Bragged Magu Will Shield Him by Ctorch(op): 7:40am On Oct 09, 2020
Oladapo Apara, former Managing Director of Alpha Beta Consulting has exposed how Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State and Tunde Doherty, incumbent Managing Director of the firm were involved in alleged money laundering activities going up to N100 billion.

In a law suit marked LD/7330GCMW/2020, the former Alpha Beta managing partner accused Tinubu of laundering funds through Vintage Press, publishers of The Nation Newspaper and ordered him to appear before the court within 42 days or risk judgement being passed in his absence.

Apara who had earlier written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2018 disclosed that Tinubu had bragged that he was untouchable as the then EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu would shield him from prosecution.

Apara stated that no significant line of action had been taken since he wrote the first petition in 2018.

He wrote, “The 2nd defendant (Bola Tinubu) also warned the claimant not to even think of exposing his involvement in the financial affairs of the 1st defendant (Alpha Beta) to the EFCC as the then acting Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, will always protect him (Tinubu).”

However, Dapo Apara disclosed he conceived Alpha Beta consulting firm in 2002 to manage and reconcile Lagos state taxes.

According to him, Tinubu who was then Lagos governor agreed to the idea, and claimed a whopping 70 percent shares of the company through cronies.

He said Tinubu instructed that his 70 percent shares should be in the names of Adegboyega Oyetola and one Olumide Ogunmola.

“The claimant avers that following the presentation of his proposal to the Lagos State Government, the 2nd defendant (Tinubu) who was at the time the Governor of Lagos State demanded that 70 per cent equity interest in the project be assigned to a certain Olumide Ogunmola before the 2nd defendant will approve the project.

“The claimant avers that he then met the said Olumide Ogunmola (who he had never met before) and it was agreed that a limited liability company be incorporated in which the claimant will hold 30 per cent shares while Olumide Ogunmola and his partners will hold 70 per cent of the shares of the company.

“The claimant avers that following the agreement alluded to above; Alpha Beta Consulting Limited was incorporated in 2002 with the following shareholders: Dapo Apara (30 per cent), Olumide Ogunmola (40 per cent) and Adegboyega Oyetola (30 per cent).”

According to Apara, Tinubu later directed that Oyetola’s shares be transferred to one Tunde Badejo.

He further stated that the ex-Lagos governor controlled the company which got 10 per cent of the taxes it collected on behalf of the state government.

Apara stated that Lagos State Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR) increased exponentially from N10 billion in 2002 to N300 billion after he developed technological innovation which made this possible.

He stated that on Tinubu’s instruction, the incorporation structure of the Alpha-Beta Consulting Limited was changed from a limited liability company to a limited liability partnership under a newly promulgated law in Lagos State.

This, Apara claimed, was just to protect Tinunu’s involvement in the firm from public glare.

Apara said that Ogunmola was made the managing partner of the newly-transformed firm and he was made his deputy.

But in 2014, he noted, Ogunmola seized to be managing partner and he was named as his replacement.

Apara said as the new managing partner, he decided to check the firm’s books and discovered shocking revelations, including curious transfers of N20 billion to different companies.

He said that partners nominated by Tinubu ordered these transfers and left him (Apara) out of the loop in violation of their terms of their partnership.

The ex-Alpha Beta boss said N550 million payment was made to Ocean Trust Ltd vide payment instruction dated May 15, 2018 and N850 million payment was made to Ocean Trust Ltd vide payment instruction dated March 14, 2015.

He further claimed that N960 million was spent on purchasing HITV’s 300,000,000 shares.

Apara said his decision to check the company’s books infuriated Tinubu who ordered his demotion to deputy managing partner.

He said his refusal to obey the order caused his frosty relationship with the ex-Lagos governor.

Apara said Tinubu proceeded to orchestrate his forceful removal from the company and named former Finance Commissioner under his administration in Lagos, Doherty as new managing partner.

He said since this illegal removal, the company has refused to pay him his rightful dividends as founding partner, praying the court to order the company to do so.

Igbo Apprenticeship System Makes People Hate Igbos – Aisha Yesufu Sparks Debate
Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu has stirred up a debate on Twitter after sharing her opinion that the Igbo apprenticeship system have contributed to why many people from other tribes resent Igbos.
It is given that the age long Igbo apprenticeship system has produced a lot of multimillionaires of Igbo extraction to the wonder of many from other tribes.
The Igbo apprenticeship system allows a businessman take a young person to learn about his business and eventually get settled (given start-up capital) after an agreed period of time, which usually lasts between 5 to 7 years. During the service period, the younger person (servant) serves the businessman (master) while learning the business.
The Igbos have used the system to build themselves and relatives into renowned business men and women even where apprentices have little, or no formal education.
A Twitter user had said: “The Igbo’s apprenticeship program is the only ‘MBA’ class in the world that teaches the real intricacies of running a business, the practical application of SWOT and PESTEL analysis. And when you graduate, they’ll give you seed capital to start the business. A system that works.”
In replying the tweet, Aisha Yesufu pointed out that “The Igbo apprenticeship is an amazing system and the reason Igbos are great in business.”
However, she went on to say that “Everything has it’s advantage and disadvantage and that same system has also portrayed Igbos as clannish people who only employ their own people and never assimilate”
Her tweets opened up a debate as she went on to state that the apprenticeship system have contributed to Igbos been resented the same way Jews are resented.
She went on; “These are my opinions and thoughts over the years and I might be completely wrong but this is how I see it
“There is a need to take a deliberate look at the Igbo apprenticeship system & begin to look at ways of inclusion. It can start with 5% inclusion of others. When you always go to your village to bring those that will work for you how do you expect the people where you are to feel?
“Just like the Jews, Igbos are resented & I have always wondered why? Is it because they are successful and can achieve anything from nothing? Is it the resilience? I concluded it is because it seems no matter how long they stay with you or you with them you are never one in biz
“A situation where as a business person you only employ your people via the apprenticeship model & no matter how long you stay in a place you never employ the indigenes there except to load and off load. there will be resentment. More if it is not one off experience but the norm
“The Jews too have that trait. Family businesses. Helping each other grow in business and capacity to gang up(if na one naira na one naira) on business issues are common traits shared by both Igbos and Jews. The others feel like outsiders not allowed to share in the goodness
“Systems are to be looked at and upgraded from time to time. It is also important to look at how things are perceived by others. You don’t have to change but just know this is how this action is seen by others
“In all the riots I witnessed as a child, I always say it is more economical than religion. Host community usually think it is the others that kept them impoverished. They feel those monies would have been theirs if these people weren’t there. People don’t blame their lazy selves.

PoliticsAsaba Massacre : Asaba Should Forgive And Forget- General Gowon by Ctorch(op): 9:50am On Oct 05, 2020
Remembering the Asaba Massacre , Asaba should forgive and forget-Gowon

October 6 and 7, 1967 will ever remain unforgettable to Asaba people. They were the days the Nigerian Army led by late General Muritala Muhammed, attempted to wipe out all the male indigenes of Asaba because they were seen as Igbos and relations of Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, leader of the 1966 coup that claimed the life of some northern Nigeria leaders. Emma Okocha’s book, Blood on the Niger is the book that elevated the Asaba massacre to global discourse. With this review presented at the Asaba Reading Club event tagged “Asaba massacre: The peril of geographical location” at time blood is flowing again, this time ironically in the midst of those whose relatives were used to carry out the Asaba massacre, we say, never again!

Blood on the Niger authored by Emma Okocha and published by Gomslam Books is an extremely graphic and historical non- fiction piece. It is a well-researched book spanning 304-page of lucid yet unbelievable unfolding horror. The book tells the tale of a people and the fate meted out by those considered guardians, friends, and neighbours. It comprises of 10 chapters and closing pages. It is written in the style of an academic piece and covers the period of the Nigerian civil war which spanned 6th July 1967 to 15th January 1970 and the years that followed.

The civil war was fought between the government of Nigeria headed by General Yakubu Gowon and the secessionist state of Biafra led by late Lt. Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu. The war was known as the Biafran War or the Nigerian-Biafra War. According to numerous sources and facts also garnered from the book under review, the conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural tensions shortly after the country’s independence from colonial rule; a resulting military coup and counter-coup, persecution of the Igbos in northern Nigeria which eventually translated to the persecution of people the writer called Western Ibo – they hailed from the Midwest and the South-South region particularly (see the map depicted on page 16 of the text under review for a clearer reference);

The people from the Midwest and the South-South region dominated different spheres of post-colonial Nigeria life including the civil service, hospital management, the military, government, trade, and commerce. There was also the hustle for control of the lucrative crude oil production in the region as a catalyst spearheading the war.

Other writers on the subject matter include Frederick Forsyth – The Biafra Story, The 12-day revolution by Major Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro and The Biafra war-Nigeria and the aftermath by Herbert Ekwe-Ekwe, The man died: Prison Notes of Wole Soyinka by Wole Soyinka to mention but a few.

Blood on the Niger tells the tale of the Western Ibos. It takes its name from the summary execution of young men of Western Ibo descent and indeed others whose origin could not be ascertained at the time of their execution as they had integrated with the natives, including perceived Biafran symapathisers by the river banks…their bodies tossed into the River Niger and carried away as the blood flowed.

As victims of the brutal treatment unleashed by federal troops, the region groaned from suppressing or voicing decades of pain, unacknowledged and stifled for fear of the impact of the same under the notion of One Nigeria.

The book begins with several introductory pieces that feature quotes concerning the war from world leaders and influencers including Richard Nixon, former president of the United States of America, The Vatican, as well as several international press reviews from notable media establishments from around the world.

In its introductory chapter, the profile of the Midwest as an administrative centre, would eventually lead to the systematic massacre and felling of Western Ibos. Subsequent chapters feature the Biafran invasion of the Midwest, the resulting quagmire of the Western Ibos who were looked upon with suspicion by the federal troops. There also followed the mauling of unarmed civilians who were summarily executed in several pockets spanning the entire region as shown on the map depicted in the book eventually culminating in the dance of death on the 6th day of October 1967 where over 3, 000 men were slain in one day at Ogbeasowa in Asaba as they gathered to welcome Federal troops.

Apart from the significant massacre where the men were separated from women and children, then killed, the gun-toting, gum-chewing soldiers of the federal troops were seen acting with a list exterminating and redeeming at will. They claimed to be acting on orders. Whose orders? They raped and plundered – power-drunk on spoils of war from a welcoming populace; the power of life and death literally in their hands!

I must pause here to acknowledge that the book cover – a one of its kind, a wall mural interpreted in bronze and commissioned by a proud son of Asaba, Prof. E.A.C. Nwanze, to commemorate the massacre – is indeed a fitting choice.

Other chapters in the book featured the obituary portraits and laudable achievements of victims of the massacre cut down in their prime, the strive for redefinition, relevance, and rehabilitation in the aftermath of the killings. The attempts at healing – an opportunity presented by the Oputa panel, and the failure of the government to acknowledge and perhaps rant restitution to the region by adopting the white paper from the panel as well to date. There was also Gowon’s apology viewed by many as personal.

Critique on the book includes the arrangement of chapters which could have been better managed to allow for a seamless flow of reading as there was a certain back and forth which caused the reader to scamper for reference and counter reference in different parts of the book to enjoy for smooth reading and understanding. The pictures should have been better presented in gloss print. It would also have been great to know the constitution of the International observer team on page 160 for posterity’s sake whilst the introductory and closing pages could have been better managed for a seamless reading and reference. There are also one or two forgivable typographical errors.

Emma Okocha’s Blood on the Niger is a chilling, enlightening, and well-researched documentation of a story that needs to be told over and over again. Though not for the faint of heart as it is a tale of graves so shallow pointing fingers of the dead could be visible, an account of guests rising from hearty meals to gun down their hosts – It is a shocking and telling tale. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who seeks to understand the reality of the massacre. For answers, pull up a chair and read Blood on the Niger.

PoliticsAnambra 2021: Obiano Has Killed APGA With Poor Performance –ngige by Ctorch(op): 2:46pm On Oct 04, 2020
The fake love between Dr Chris Nwabueze Ngige of APC and gov Obiano of APGA is over. Ngige is not happy that Obiano has used and dumped him.

Recall that it was Ngige who used his contacts and closeness to Mr President to help Agu Awka block the 12 Igwes who were at Abuja to see President Buhari.

Ngige was reportedly seen moving within the presidency to convince the protocols not to allow ndi Igwe who accompanied Arthur Eze meet with Mr President. The Labour Minister went further to issue an official statement asking the governor to sanction both the traditional rulers and Arthur Eze for seeking audience with the President without his consent.

But Ngige did not do all those things free, he saw an opportunity to align with the governor in order to get at the Igwe of Alor, HRH MacAnthony Elibe Okonkwo. He thought that Agu Awka would appreciate his role and outrightly sack Igwe Elibe.

But the governor has not made any convincing move to appease Ngige by sacking Igwe Elibe Okonkwo despite all the protests and crises the suspension of the Igwe has generated in Alor.

Disappointed that Agu Awka has used and dumped him, Ngige in a statement yesterday attacked gov Obiano and called him a failure. In the statement, Ngige said that gov Obiano has performed poorly and destroyed APGA which cleared the coast for another party (APC) to win the forthcoming 2021 governorship election.

Now that they have done six years, Anambra people have judged them fully and discovered that they have not made any impression, no impressionable progress, no tangible infrastructure or achievement seen on ground. Even the economy of the people is not buoyant anymore. Anambra used to have an economy that is fast growing in Nigeria, but now as you can see, everybody is disenchanted”, Ngige stated.

The Labour Minister also asked ndi Anambra to reject APGA stating that Anambra 2021 will be the test case for “our people to show that they are no longer doing a lone ranger party type of situation by which I mean that APGA should now do what we call voluntary dismembership and starting the dismembership with the Anambra election.”

The fact remains that APGA under this leadership is a total disappointment – a use and dump. All those who supported this APGA govt are regretting. Ngige is the latest victim. The Labour Minister fought Arthur Eze, accused ndi Igwe who went to Abuja just to please Obiano and get him to sack Igwe Elibe Okonkwo. But he has been betrayed and disappointed.

PoliticsThe Igbo Language Gets Its Own Modern Script by Ctorch(op): 8:29pm On Oct 03, 2020
wants everyone to write Igbo with freedom. The Latin alphabet, she says, has too many limitations and is a “deep source of frustration for everyone who has ever tried to read or write” Igbo. So she invented Ndebe, a script that pays homage to “the old Nsibidi logographs.”

Ndebe is not Nsibidi, she is quick to remind people. “It is completely unrelated,” she told this reporter during a 30-minute Zoom call in July. While the latter was invented more than 1,500 years ago and is generally considered too complex or indecipherable to be used by present-day Igbo people, Ndebe is designed to “overcome the design problems” of a writing system “every Igbo person could use simultaneously.”

The Ndebe script is visually striking. It consists of 1,174 characters, each of which represents a particular sound in Igbo. People necessarily don’t have to memorise all the characters to be able to read or write the script because there is a formula, a scientific logic – consciously embedded by Lotanna – to ease the difficulty of assimilation, especially for busy adults.

Ndebe solves two important problems of Igbo language literacy. One, it eliminates the confusion that often arises when two Igbo speakers with different dialects try to communicate via the written page. Two, it forces Igbo to be written with the appropriate tones.

Ndebe is “a writing system that addresses the tonal peculiarities of Nigerian languages, pleasing to the eye, which might carry the burden of our literary and academic aspirations,” linguist Kola Tubosun wrote recently.

Tubosun, whose work with Yoruba won him the Premio Ostana prize in 2016, also sees Ndebe, partly on the basis of its “visual allure”, being “used along with English or other language texts on signposts throughout the country.”

“ . . . where I think the script most succeeds is in its opening of a new vista for the revitalization of Igbo as a written language both on the page and on the web, for literacy, and for culture,” he wrote.

At some point, early this July, more than 300 people were tweeting about Ndebe. Lotanna had just unveiled the new script on a dedicated website. “This is brilliant,” one person tweeted. “This should be widely adopted.” Others praised Lotanna’s brilliance. “Oyinbos lied to Africans with Western education & we all believed without doing research,” another person wrote. “They said Africans only have oral history and no form of writing. Ethiopians have Geez script and South East Nigeria had Nsibidi which is 4000yrs old, thanks @sugabelly for educating us all.” The excitement was palpable.

An Ndebe Character. Photo Credit: The Ndebe Project

When Lotanna started working on Ndebe in 2008, she was 19, studying Business Administration at Canisius College, a private Jesuit university in Buffalo, New York. The school had a lot of international students. “I used to hang out with a lot of Japanese students,” she said. Her Japanese communion piqued her interest in the East Asian nation’s culture, enough to begin considering learning Japanese.

Lotanna was a linguistic prodigy. As a child, she spoke Igbo and English, learned Yoruba in primary school, Hausa in secondary and taught herself Spanish. But it was Japanese, with its syllabic writing system, that crystallised her frustration with how African languages, especially her native Igbo, were written.

“Ever since I first learned to write Igbo in school, I have been infuriated with Samuel Ajayi Crowther,” she blogged in 2009. “The Roman system of writing was obviously never designed to accommodate African languages, but Mr. Crowther nevertheless proceeded to use it to write down all three major Nigerian languages, thereby bringing untold agony and exasperation on all future generations of young Nigerians.”

“For the Roman script, the tone marking is a big issue for me, especially because of Yoruba and the way we write,” Tubosun said during a phone interview. “There is also the technology, when we don’t have the tools to write it.” For example, Unicode is famous for incorrectly rendering certain Yoruba vowels. “So maybe if we have some other way of writing that can bypass the obstacles that Unicode presents. It might give us a new way of writing these languages.”

Lotanna started to research African writing systems and found out about Nsibidi which originated from the Cross river valley (south-east Nigeria) and consists of inscriptions in sanctuaries and special forms of language used among members of certain secret societies.

Precolonial sub-Saharan Africa is largely perceived, by western sources, as without a history of writing systems. But systems such as Nsibidi and Gicandi from the Kikuyu of Kenya, even if arcane, say otherwise. The Ge’ez script has also been in use in Ethiopia since 500 B.C. Since the 1800s, more African scripts – Mende in southern Sierra Leone, Loma in northern Liberia, Bamum in Cameroon – have been devised to perpetuate local lingua.

Armed with the knowledge that it was possible to create a writing system unique to Igbo, Lotanna, in 2008, started work.

At first, she planned to revive Nsibidi and supplement it with Ndebe. So, Igbo would be written in two scripts. (Japanese is notably written in three)

She completed the first iteration of Ndebe during the American winter break of 2008, bleeding into 2009 when she first wrote about the project on her blog. Then she was 20 and wanted to start an “Igbo Academy”.

“My goal is for the Igbo Academy to expand Igbo vastly by developing additions and modifications to the Igbo language that will greatly encourage its use in everyday life by Igbos and non-Igbos alike, and that will make Igbo relevant and expansive enough to be regularly used in business, politics, fashion, news, literature, dialogue, and in every other sphere of life,” she wrote at the time.

PoliticsOre Will Be The New Nnewi Before 2024 – Akeredolu by Ctorch(op): 8:38pm On Oct 02, 2020
Oluwarotimi Akeredolu the Governor of Ondo State, has sent a message of hope to the people of the state, declaring that Ore, a commercial town in Odigbo Local Government Area (LGA) of the State, will be like Nnewi, an industrial town in Anambra State before 2024, if he’s reelected.
There are 7 companies currently operating at the Ondo-Linyi Industrial Park, Ore, facilitated by the Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA).
Speaking on Friday when he visited Odigbo LGA, in continuation of his second term campaign, Akeredolu promised to turn Ore to a fully industrial town before 2024, saying “my second term shall be a blessing to the younger generation”.

“Because of what we have done in Ore, Kabiyesi told me not to bother to come here to campaign but we said we would come here to show appreciation to the people for their support.
“By the grace of God, we have just started. We started with the Ore Redemption Bridge because we needed to ensure safety before hitting the ground fully.
“I am a believer of God. I am saying again, that by the grace of God, Ore will be turned to a new Nnewi before February 2024. Presently, we have seven companies here, including a cassava to ethanol factory. And because of that, cassava is now like gold in Ondo. The cassava available in Ondo State is not even enough for the factory, the company go as far as Taraba State to get Cassava.
“I want to congratulate all cassava farmers in Ondo State on this feat. We have produced a market for you to sell your cassava. Ore and the entire Southern Senatorial District are where we want to use to run our industrialisation policy.
“The fatories will be at the Ore Industial Parks, the Bitumen Exploration shall be operating in Ikale while the Sea Port will be in Ilaje.
“I therefore congratulate the younger people of our state on what is ahead of them. My second term shall be a blessing to the young people because our future bleaks if we fail to develop the younger generation.
“So, we need your vote to return to office. Without continuity and consistency in governance, we are going nowhere” the Governor, said.
Meanwhile, the Governor has commissioned a skill acquisition centre designed to cater for various life-skill trainings for youth of the state
The Skills Acquisition Centre, worth #800 million, was built under the office of the Senior Special Assistant (SSA), to the President on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and named after the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Centre, according to Orelope, will also cater for economic empowerment of the teeming youth in the area.
The available skills in the centre are: sewing, fashion and dressmaking, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), photography, hair dressing and cosmetology.
Others are: barbing, catering, tiling and interlocking, automobile, aluminium fabrication, welding and Plumbing among others.
There is also a provision for short term training on bead making, soap making, makeup artistry, event planning and decoration, painting, drawing, weaving and shoe making, small chops and flower arrangements.
Akeredolu, while commissioning the centre, appreciated the president and office of SSA for the gesture, saying it would go a long way to reducing the rate of unemployment in the state.
Akeredolu explained one of the best ways which people could get jobs and become employers of labour is through skill acquisition.
According to Akeredolu, trainees at the centre will be empowered with the working materials after graduation.
He, therefore, appealed to the citizens to continue to support the APC-led government and vote for him in the Oct. 10, governorship election.
In his remarks, Tinubu, who was represented by Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State, commended both the federal and Ondo State governments for the initiative.
He advised the youth and the community to see the centre as theirs by cultivating the idea of maintaining the centre.
“The era of white collar job is gone. What is important now is skills acquisition and this is the best gift that anybody can get.
“Technical/vocational training and skills are the way to go in Nigeria today, please take it seriously.
“However, I urge you all to vote for our party, the APC on October 10th. Akeredolu is a man of honour, courage, valour and probity. He is a pathfinder. I urge you all to support him”, Oyetola, said

PoliticsACF Demands Referendum On One Nigeria, Dismisses Call For Restructuring by Ctorch(op): 8:00am On Oct 01, 2020
The apex northern group, the Arewa Consultative Forum, has dismissed the call for restructuring, saying it was not well defined by its proponents.

The group said the North could not be intimidated.

The ACF also said the North preferred a referendum to determine Nigeria's continued existence, adding that various parts of the country could go their different ways if its existence were no more desirable.

In an interview with Punch, the ACF secretary-general, Aliyu, said although the group was not afraid of restructuring, its proponents had not adequately defined it.

Aliyu stated, "The North is not afraid of restructuring. What we want is to define what is it that we want. If we want to be in Nigeria and if we don't want to be in Nigeria, let's sit down and agree."

According to him, the North is looking at all options and is leaving all options open.

He stated, "We can restructure. We can become a confederation. We can devolve powers. We can have state police and all that we want. But I can tell you that the thinking of the North now is that we should have a referendum if we want Nigeria or not. If we want Nigeria, then, we must sit down and see how Nigeria will work.

"If we need the country, let's sit down and decide that we need the country first. Then we can now sit down and decide on how our country can work for all of us. If we decide that we don't want the country as it is, then, I mean, countries have gone apart, Czechoslovakia and quite several other countries, including Sudan, had gone apart. We don't want to go to war."

"The North is not going to be intimidated again to accept anything. We have to sit down and resolve whether we want this federation or this country as it is."

CelebritiesMike Ezuruonye Misunderstood Me, ‘im Sorry,’ Says Kunle Afolayan by Ctorch(op): 1:44pm On Sep 28, 2020
Popular filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, has reacted to the social media row involving him and notable actor, Mike Ezuruonye, saying that the later merely misunderstood him.

“While I did not see my innocent reaction to an indicting post by a random IG follower as capable of further hurting my friend and colleague, Mike Ezuruonye, to be labelled a tribalist in retaliation is very unfortunate,” says Afolayan.

“Honestly, I was misunderstood,” the filmmaker says while shedding light on the matter.

“My reaction, which was rather spontaneous, was to chide the IG follower who appeared to be reporting the actor to me. And I merely asked (in Yoruba) how all of that was my business. It was like saying ‘when did I become an officer of the law’. Obviously, my colleague took the context of my post wrongly and angrily accused me of tribalism.

“I do not know what gave birth to such misrepresentation. However, while I am famous for living and promoting everything that my tradition stands for as a Yoruba man, I have maintained a mutual friendship with people of other extractions, Igbos especially. It is therefore not in the interest of both of us (Mike Ezuruonye and I) to politicise our emotion with tribal colouration. For me, this is undeserving of our other friends, and goes to offend the sensibility of genuine relationships we have each cultivated with people of other tribes.”

On how he has been promoting inter-tribal relationships through his works, Afolayan says the facts are there for all to see.

“The ideals are reflected in the themes and plots of my movies, some of which include; The Figurine, The Bridge, Phone Swap, Omugwo, and Roti.”

The filmmaker says he has offered an olive branch on the matter. “I have told Mike ‘I’m sorry’ since he found my post offensive. I am also apologising to anyone who also may have seen things from his point of view. Ire o.”

PoliticsYorubas In Kwara, Kogi Demand Merger With South-West by Ctorch(op): 6:52am On Sep 27, 2020
The Yoruba ethnic group in Kwara and Kogi states has demanded a merger with their kith and kin in the South-West region through boundary adjustment.

The group, which occupies seven local government areas in Kwara South senatorial zone and five LGAs in Kogi State, in a statement on Friday, said it had forwarded a memorandum to the National Assembly on the platform of Kwara South Consultative Forum.

According to the National President of the forum, Pa Joseph Aderibigbe, who was the first Secretary to Kwara State Government when it was created in 1967, the group submitted a memorandum to the 9th National Assembly’s Committee on Review of the Nigerian Constitution, with a demand for the merging of the Yoruba of Kwara and Kogi with their kinsmen in the South-West through boundary adjustment.

The group added that the Yoruba in the group should have their own administrative units like others within the proposed Region.

It further demanded that the rest of the Yoruba in the remaining five LGAs of the state should be part of Kwara Yoruba to be merged with the proposed Western Region through a referendum.

The KSCF, in its memorandum, said, “The Yoruba of Kwara South occupying seven out of the 16 LGAs in the state and their counterparts in Kogi state were not given any say to determine where they wanted to be and who they wanted to live with before lumping them in with the Northern Protectorate, contrary to their right to self-determination as enshrined in the United Nations Atlantic Charter.

“The search for freedom, liberty, independence and self-determination for our people, born and unborn, therefore continues. We want a group and region to which we truly belong, where respect between us and others is reciprocal. We can no longer tolerate second-class citizenship, marginalisation and domination in a place and state that is supposed to be for all of us who live in it.”

On the country’s presidential system of government, Adereibigbe noted that it was very expensive for the country’s economy, adding that it was “insufficiently participatory” to satisfy the yearnings and aspirations of the citizenry.

According to him, this has led to the clamour by the forum for the return of the country to the parliamentary system of government.

PoliticsAnambra APC Leaders Ask Buhari To Call Ngige To Order by Ctorch(op): 1:19pm On Sep 24, 2020
All Progressives Congress, APC, Local Government Area chapter chairmen from the three senatorial districts of Anambra State alongside state officers and stakeholders of the party have tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to nudge Senator Chris Ngige towards opening the party in the state.

The stakeholders in a letter to the president alleged that Dr. Ngige as the leader of the party in the state being the only minister from the state has not shown leadership in carrying the party members along.

The stakeholders in the petition also lamented that since his advent as minister and leader of the party in the state in 2015, that the APC has not won one office from councilor to governor.

The stakeholders who authored the open letter included Hon. Jideofor Ejimofor, APC Zonal Publicity Secretary Anambra North Zone; Emeka Kammelu, APC Chairman, Onitsha South Local Government Area; Chief Gody Offor, APC Chairman, Ekwusigo Local Government Area; Chief Henry Obiokpala, APC Zonal Youth Leader Anambra South and Chief Ugochukwu Egbobe, APC Chairman, Anaocha Local Government Area.

Others who signed the letter included Chief Joseph Molokwu, APC Chairman, Ayamelum LGA and Chief Paul Chuks Umenduka, APC Chairman, Aguata LGA.

They said: “We thank Mr. President for graciously reappointing Senator Dr Chris Ngige as Minister of Labour & Productivity, appointing his wife, Dr Mrs. Evelyn Ngige as Permanent Secretary, Office of Head of Service (Welfare Office); his biological brother Barr Emeka Ngige SAN as Chairman, Council of Legal Education; his elder brother, Chief Edwin Ngige and his maternal uncle Mr. Emma CJ Nwosu as Chairmen of Federal Boards; his biological sister, Barr Bene Nwachukwu (nee Ngige) and his cousin, Uzoma Igbonwa as Members of Board of NACA, amongst others.

“May we sadly inform Mr. President that since registration of All Progressives Congress (APC) on 31st July 2013 by INEC, with Dr. Chris Ngige as its Leader in Anambra State, APC HAS NEVER WON ANY ELECTION anywhere in the state; whether Councillorship, Local Government Chairmanship, House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate or Governorship.

“It may also interest Mr President to know that the Councilor represented Alor ward (Hon. Minister’s ward), whether elected or appointed since the inception of APC has always been of APGA extraction.

“Same applies to the House Member representing the Minister’s State Constituency. Presently, his Federal Constituency has a PDP House of Reps Member.”

PoliticsGovernor Condemns Push For Resource Control by Ctorch(op): 7:03am On Sep 23, 2020
As Niger Delta governors continue to push for resource control, their counterparts in the northern region believe current structure, which confers ownership of all natural resources on the Federal Government’s and prescribes the allocation of 13 per cent derivation is most suitable for Nigeria.

Speaking with select editors at the Government House in Lafia, Nasarawa State Capital, Governor Abdullahi Sule, reiterated that he will not support any move toward resource control, while responding to whether he will support a bill to that effect.

He said: “Nasarawa State will not be at the forefront of encouraging the Federal Government to relinquish its ownership of minerals for the states to take ownership. Nasarawa State will not do that. We believe very strongly that it would be disadvantageous to the interest of the nation for Nasarawa State to push for such a move that states should take control, and that is what they call resource control, and Nasarawa State will not be at the forefront of resource control.”

Rather than resource control, Sule advised state governors to push for local content development for their respective resources, which would impact Nigerians and the economy more.

He argued that it was selfish for governors to want to control the natural resources in their domain, saying: “If for our own selfish interest we say: yes, we push for resource control, then how would our neighbours survive? That is the reason why the Federal Government needs to keep the ownership.

“Nasarawa State believes in local content development and local participation and that is what we are trying to drive when it comes to that aspect. And the reason why it (resource control) is bad is because Nigeria is endowed with mineral resources, but they are not in every state. So, if we allow the states, because Nasarawa also has some oil deposits by the way, and so far it has been certified that it is of commercial quantity, and all the minerals you have mentioned. If Nasarawa would say that, how about other states like Taraba, Plateau, and Benue that probably don’t have that, how would they gain?”

As a result, Sule insisted that “It’s better to continue with the federal allocation. Already, the Federal Government is doing a lot by saying there is 13 per cent derivation for the states. Whatever comes from the minerals in your own state, you get the 13 per cent derivation, and that is the reason why today, some of the states, their federal allocation could be as much as N20 billion, and the other states would be as low as N3 billion, because they don’t have the minerals. Those are the kinds of things that I believe we can do. Now, you mentioned the various ones that we have, and I strongly agree with you that we should try as much as possible to develop them, which was why I told you I am participating in the local content seminar, that way, Nigerians should have ownership.”

Meanwhile, the governor has promised investors of many incentives, including tax holidays for investing in Nasarawa State. He also assured them of adequate return on their investments.

Given his background of coming from the private sector, having resigned as the Managing Director of Dangote Sugar Refinery, Sule said: “I come from that background, and understand that background, and would not make life very difficult for an investor. I would make life easy for an investor. I would not allow any investor to stay that number of years without making money. We would find a way for him to make his money, because it is only when he makes his money that we would make our money.”

In regards to the tax holidays, he said his government is willing to negotiate on agreeable terms with investors based on the investment proposals in terms of: “What kind of employment are you going to generate? What kind of corporate social responsibility (CSR) are you providing to the people? In your business plan, you don’t have to tell us your profit; we don’t need to know the exact money, just give us an idea. Then how are you going to affect the environment? What kind of pollution would be there and how would the people be affected.”

He added: “We tell the investors that we know what we are doing, and we tell them that definitely we are interested in their return on investments. If the investors understand that you understand them, and that you are willing to work with them, I think that is an attraction for investments and that’s what we have been doing. We have been able to attract few investments so far, and we believe that we would attract a lot more by the time they know directly where we are going. Recently, I saw on the news the five states that have the highest foreign direct investments, and we were lucky Nasarawa was one of the states that were mentioned. Indeed, we are working to see that we attract some of these investments by providing the investors with what they need because we know what they need.”

PoliticsEmmanuel Uduaghan To Return To PDP After Two Years In APC by Ctorch(op): 6:44am On Sep 22, 2020
Political Realignment: Uduaghan to Return to PDP

The immediate-past Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, is set to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A politician and confidant of the former governor told THISDAY in confidence that Uduaghan has visited the incumbent Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, at the Government House in Asaba, where all plans were concluded for his return to their fold.

The visit is clear confirmation of the rumours, especially since the relationship of both governors has not been rosy for a while.

The former governor, THISDAY checks revealed, had also met with some stakeholders in the PDP in the state, including another former Governor, Chief James Ibori, on the possibility of his return to the party.

Uduaghan, in 2018, left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on whose platform he was elected as the governor twice, for the All Progressives Congress (APC), following an alleged cold war with the present administration.

The former governor said his defection at the time was in order for him to support President Muhammad Buhari’s quest for the development of Niger Delta.

He alleged then that: “The PDP has never protected its own. The PDP can use you and whatever happens to you after, nobody cares. People would move from the PDP to the APC because the conditions in APC now favour the development of the Niger Delta, and so we are ready to mobilise the people from the PDP in the South-south to APC.

“Besides, you need to have some people in the APC to be able to push some of the agreements reached by the Buhari’s government with the people of the region not to start a fresh agreement.”

Uduaghan’s proposed defection to the PDP in the state is expected by some politicians, who see him as not being recognised in the APC since he joined the party.

He was among the top politicians who rallied round the candidature of Chief Great Ogboru on the platform of APC in the state in last governorship election, but failed to get the support of the likes of the incumbent Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege; a chieftain of the party, Olorogun O’rtega Emerhor and others.

Following the failure of Ogboru to clinch the ticket, Uduaghan was also expected to get a political appointment from President Buhari-led APC but until now, there is nothing of such.

“The power play among the top players in the APC in the state might have frustrated the former governor into deciding to defect back to the PDP,” the party source said.

Though the former governor could not be reached at the time of filing this report, his aide, Mr. Monoyo Edon, said it was within Uduaghan’s rights to visit the Government House any time.

Edon, who spoke on behalf of the former governor, said the last time he checked, his boss was still in the APC.

He said for a man of his calibre, it was a normal thing for people to say such thing about him.

Three Nigerians, Rasak Sanni Sadu, Omawale Olamide Owalabi and Samson Ajayi, have become the first people in Irish’s history to be charged over an alleged ‘romance fraud’ scam.
The trio were arrested by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau in Dublin, Navan and Drogheda.

According to The Irish Sun, they were quizzed before being brought to Dublin District Court on Saturday morning charged with a series of suspected fraud offences.
The alleged offences are believed to have been committed between October 2019 and April of this year.
Sadu has been charged with the theft of €35,000 and two counts of money laundering. One of the money laundering charges relates to the alleged conversion of stolen property into a €25,000 Rolex watch.
The other two defendants have each been charged with three counts of money laundering.
The major probe — which also involves the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau — was launched in the summer after a complaint was made to cops by a Dublin woman.
The woman alleges she spent cash on an investment project in the Middle East that never existed after receiving correspondence on the dating website Plenty of Fish last year from a man claiming to be a US oil rig worker.
The trio, who had lived in Ireland for a number of years, were remanded in custody to appear in court at a later date. :
