PervertProphet:Many people have problem with apostle Paul. lt is believed that paul corrupted christianity. lt is also believed that paul spoke against the law contrary to the teachings of jesus and many other things in Paul's letters they don't like. ln addition to that, paul's writings are very hard and full of theology. l do not agree with paul on many occasions, but l agree with him when it comes to the jewish laws and the role of laws generally. Keeping the laws of Moses does not justify you before God but rather carrying out good works borne out of faith and love. People who misunderstand Paul on this issue think he was at odds with jesus here, the misunderstanding comes from the belief that jesus wants us to keep the laws of moses, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Whenever jesus spoke of the law, he was referring to moral laws, the guidelines and principles behind those moral laws, and he wanted us to keep them even better than the scribes and pharisees. The everlasting laws of God are not the laws of Moses but the principles guiding all moral laws of men in all nations, and this is what jesus was focussed on. |
Lightangel65:So what did jesus do to save us from hell? |
elated177:You may be right about that, but if l answer the question you would not understand. Maybe you can start by giving me a template to work with, tell me who he is to you and why you think l have a different view, then l can start from there. |
jesusjnr:How do you know a true man of God? |
elated177:How is this related to the topic? |
elated177:lf you love your neighbour as yourself, you don't need commandments to tell you not to slander your neighbour, or steal from him, or kill him. You don't do all these, because you wouldn't want it done to you. Don't live by commandments, live by worldviews and principles and create laws for society from such principles. Jesus did not come to give commandments generally, but to teach us God's principles from which societies could derive new commandments for their situation. |
elated177:Whatever name you call him. |
elated177:Whoever loves his neighbour as himself would never steal, slander, or covet from them. That's a contradiction. You say l am trying to make a doctrine of Matthew 25v31-46, but these are clearest teachings about hellfire in the entire bible. So why don't Christians generally base their doctrines on Hellfire from it? |
elated177:Why stop at ten commandments why not all 613 commandments? |
elated177:Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you. These are the law and the prophets. ln Matthew 25v31-46, according to jesus whom you say you follow, the only thing that takes you to eternal punishment is lack of love that does nothing about human suffering not laid down rules or set of doctrines on how to worship God or not worship God. Pure and Undefined religion before God is this: To visit orphans and widows and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. James 1v27 |
elated177:Read Matthew 25v31-46 |
Kalixx:lf all humans have lived believing this(the world as a jungle) not having a faith that justice would surely come, or that there is a judge above the affairs of man( whether this is true or not), how do you think this world would have been like? lf you believe this, then why not cheat your way through and oppress others to get what you want, especially if you are a powerful emperor whom no one can question or stop? Your belief would never make society work, that is why pure hardened atheism leads to nihilism, and such atheists have not given our world much. The atheism we have today builds on liberalism which comes from humanism/ deism and all of these worldviews operate by faith, that the world is not a jungle. This is because humanism in the west assumes both the general religious and Christian worldview by default without even knowing it. |
somnvayina said...(Thou shall not kill.. (there is no way God will be expecting a human sacrifice).... Put all together.. You will find Christianity promotes all what God condemns).. Jesus' death on the cross was not a human sacrifice. Where did you come up with this idea of human sacrifice? |
sonmvayina:Well maybe man is not to make another image of God because man himself is the image of God according to your myth in Genesis 1v26. |
sonmvayina:Well how do you know that was God's commandment? why do you accept one myth and reject the other? |
Amujale:So only African history is good? lol. |
Kalixx:lf we all just die without a future resurrection, then we have no hope in this world, and those who have been unjustly oppressed and died that way out of oppression and cruelty ( like jesus was) are of all men most miserable, if only in this life we have hope. Then the author of Ecclesiastes would be right, a dog is better than a dead lion. |
Seetto:No part of the bible was revealed to anybody. Christians say the bible is inspired book , no one said it's a revealed book. |
sonmvayina:Even if the new testament is a forgery, it doesn't matter, what is important is that we must test the teachings by their fruits to know if they are the principles of God or not, if the principles taught within the new testament work, then who cares if it is fiction? Don't you read Chinua Achebe, Shakespeare, lord of the rings, Marcus Aurelius, and the likes? Many of these are very healthy fictions that promote faith and create worldviews for children and adults. However the gospels were not born from fiction but from a real person mixed up in decades of oral traditions and retelling of stories about him. Many things there in all four gospels follow a pattern and can trace back to a real person. |
sonmvayina:How does jesus story mislead and deceive? |
sonmvayina:As for me l don't believe scripture ends with the bible, l believe one can even write inspired scripture today and why not? that is what Holyspirit does, and he hasn't stopped working. Do you know about the shepherd of Hermes, it was read widely by the early church, in many places of worship, but it didn't make it into our bible today because they felt it couldn't trace back to any apostolic authority. But the shephered of Hermes was more about self discipline and how we should live a moral life presented to us in the form of visions by the author. The problem is not with viewing scripture as inspired, the problem is when we deceive ourselves that scripture is not the work of man but of God alone. |
elated177:So what's your point about my point? |
elated177:lf someone says l love God and hates his brother, he is a liar, for if he does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen 1 John 4v20 No one has seen God at anytime, if we love one another God abides in us, and his love has been perfected in us. 1 john 4v12 My point is that of the two greatest commandments given by jesus, if any man keeps the second perfectly, he would find it easier to keep the first, according to John. Also jesus in Matthew 25 judges the nations by how they loved the least of his brethren not by their beliefs in doctrines or salvation formulas. Those are my points. |
elated177:lf you do not love your neighbour who you see how can you love God whom you have not seen. For as long as you did this to the least of my brethren, you have done it unto me. |
LordReed:That is the christian narrative but the bible has many narratives. Also if you read the gospels, the kingdom of God is not really about going to heaven, it is about God's rule on earth(yes you heard me right, here on earth). |
LordReed:You are not a Christian but you seem to have an unchanging opinion on what believe means. When you answer what you think Christians mean by the term...believe in christ, only then can l answer your question based on the passage. |
sonmvayina:l agree. But isn't it possible for us to see God in a man? seeing that God has no form or shape but is Spirit( according to the bible). Then it is only possible for us to see God in his image which is man. |
LordReed:What does believe in jesus mean to you? 1)To perish and to die in some places in the bible simply means to die without hope of being raised again on the last day. 2) ln some places it means to lose touch with God. ( like Adam in the garden of eden). 3) ln other places it means to rise again, but to rise to eternal condemnation( as in the book of Daniel) 4) ln other places it means to die to a previous lifestyle usually sin. ( most of the teachings of paul). 5)And for the rest of the bible, it simply means to perish literally. Both you and most evangelicals and/or Christians assume that perish in this instance should only mean no 3 and no 3 alone. As for me, l don't clearly know what it means in this instance but it most likely means you shall begin to reap the fruits of your own sin, or receive the wrath of your sin both now and in the new age during the resurrection. What l know is important from that passage though is that the words of jesus gives eternal life, or guarantees resurrection to life everlasting when the new age comes. |
LordReed:ln john's gospel, part of the job of the messaiah is to teach us all things And the woman said, we know that messaiah comes and when he comes he shall teach us all things, and jesus said to her, l that speak to you l am he. John 4. So to believe in jesus in John's gospel is to believe that he is messaiah and therefore his teachings about God and eternal life are true. This is the essence of john's gospel. ln those days if the people did not see him as messaiah or prophet or one with authority, then it made no sense to listen to him, because he is from Nazareth and nothing good comes from Nazareth. The Nazareens were also not usually amongst the elite teachers or most educated in the law, so the people at his time had no reason to believe in his sayings compared to the teachings of the saducces and pharisees in Jerusalem. He tries to provide proof that he is from God in John's gospel through his miracles and the assurance that those who listen to God in their hearts, would know that his words are true. ln john's interpretation of the life of jesus, the words of jesus are the key to abundant life, not everything could be written in a book but these are written so that you may believe and have life in his name. |
LordReed:Since when did perish equate to Hellfire? The wages of sin is death. The day that you eat of this fruit you shall die. Let the dead bury their dead. When did all of these equate to Hellfire? But even if l am to take your interpretation that perish means Hellfire, then what does it mean to believe in jesus? what of the gospel sayings from john that also says: If you abide in my words, you are my disciples, and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. John 8v32 lt is written they shall be all taught of God, therefore anyone who has heard and learned from the father comes to me. John 6v45. A new commandment l give unto you that you Love one another as l have loved you. And elsewhere in Matthew, he says: And why do you call me lord, lord, and not do what l say. lt is clear that christianity and what jesus himself taught are sometimes poles apart, for jesus of the gospels( all gospels), his teachings are important and they are all about service to people he called the least of his brethren ( the weak in society). love that requires the laying down of one's life, and forgiveness of our neighbour as the key to our receiving forgiveness from God. The problem is that Christians use the epistles and Revelation to interprete the gospels, rather than using the gospels to interpret everything else in the bible. The gospels may not be perfect, but at least they come close to the heart of the Christian message, because they are biographies about jesus and collection of some of his sayings from oral traditions. |
CAPSLOCKED:Actually if we go by the beliefs of jesus in the gospel on Hellfire only, we never see anything in the gospels that indicate people go to Hellfire for anything having to do with beliefs. ln matthew 25, jesus gives a parable about the son of man separating the sheep and the goat, with the nations gathered before him: ln that parable, the nations based on one condition: lt was that they rejected the son of man, they didn't clothe him, feed him, or care of his sickness. The nations were surprised because they didn't even know him, or if they knew him, they wouldn't reject him like that, but he said: The least of my brethren amongst you, the sick, hungry, and homeless. This parable is consistent with the message of jesus on what is really dear to his heart, and the people who would inherit the kingdom of God, and the rewards they would get at the resurrection of the just But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maim, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed because they cannot repay you but you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just. Luke 14v13-14. Go sell all you have and give to the poor and you shall have treasure in heaven, then come follow me. lt seems that jesus imagined that in the kingdom of God, those who are considered the least of the brethren, the poor, lame, blind, maimed, outcast(like the leprous) would surprise everyone because they have been neglected in the society in which jesus lived in. Also the religous people were very judgemental like we are today in the name of religon, and they judged some people as not deserving of the kingdom of God, so jesus said: For john came neither eating nor drinking and you say he hath a devil, the son of man come eating and drinking and you say look a glutton and a wine bibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. Luke 7v34. Even the poor were judgemental of the tax collectors and hated jesus for eating and drinking with such rich sinners, to which he says l have not come to call the righteous but sinners unto repentance. Now when the pharisee who had invited him, saw this, he spoke to himself saying: This man if he were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner. Luke 7v39. |
elated177:All of the law is summed up in one principle: Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself. |
