@kaliyat, she linked to her myspace page.

Her myspace id is the same as her nairaland id.

She DOES type like a chinese. I interact with quite a few on gaming forums- they sound like that.

She is most likely chinese.

@jessqueen

You are correct in your observation: majority of the females here will not approve of your relationship. You'll get many negative comments from them, and bad looks fro them when you visit here. However think nothing of it, once they accept you as one of them, the looks will vanish (but theyll still look at OTHERS that way. Its just the way they are.)

So is it true that igbo guys use and dump non-igbo girls? I'm sure many of the igbo ladies here would like to think so, as well as the non-igbo ladies that got dumped by their igbo boyfriends. The truth is that you can't generalise. I have a lot of biracial (9ja language: halfcaste) friends, and an overwhelming majority of them have igbo surnames. That doesnt indicate an unwillingness to marry outside the tribe.

What you SHOULD be careful about is the reaction of his extended family. If they accept you, then you are good to go 100%- ignore what all the haters say. If they reject you, then down the line they may pressure him into taking another wife.
ProgrammingRe: The Programmer As A Mechanic by dakmanzero(m): 2:40pm On Jun 03, 2007
This concept is nice but suffers from a fatal flaw.

You assume that it is easy to seperate theoretical from practical programming

You then go ahead to claim that the 'mechanics' keep ugrading their knowledge and using the latest langauges.

The fact that computer science is an emerging field with a rapidly changing body of knowledge is PRECISELY why there is little distinction between the theoretical and practical aspects of the field.

Hardcore researchers that work on new algorithms are much closer to mathematicians than programmers- anyone who has studied computer science to an advanced level knows that pure analytical comp. sci is little more than a highl specialised branch of mathematics.

Ideally, computer science should be a profession like accountancy or medicine. However those are ancient professions with an established, vast body of knowledge, with which accreditation is easily achieved and verified. Things change in programming so fast that nonsense is routinely made of attempts to formalise the professional structure of the field.

The equivalent of a roadside mechanic in computing will NOT appear until computing becomes so standardised that a relatively uneducated person can trivially repair software by following a few consistent rules. Any programmer knows software dev is NOWHERE near this level.

Computer engineering is still in its infancy as things change so fast that whatever process flow methodologies you invent are rapidly made irrelevant as progress is made. Check your history books- all major professions passsed through this stage, even medicine.

Thats what WHO said?

Selfless heroes fighting CRIME were a part of popular fiction in the west long before superman.

We have NOTHING like that here. The benign vigilante or super law enforcer is a foreign concept to us.

Even 'the third eye' dealt mostly with domestic/inheritance disputes, not street crime.
TV/MoviesRe: What Will A Nigerian Superhero Be Like? by dakmanzero(m): 1:59pm On Jun 03, 2007
grafikdon

it was all going smoothly until the last few sentences.

For the love of God, a Nigerian superhero should NOT be out to fight crime for idealistic purposes. Its just a ridiculous idea to most of us here. The idea that a Nigerian would 'fight crime' when blessed with superpowers is more alien and unrealistic than a human being flying.

Most 9jans would believe me if I said i could fly by night, but would never believe me if i said i was out to fight crime

The story is supernatural but her powers and weakness are not,

Naruto isnt fighting crime. He's trying to be top of his class and become the new hokage. Indicative of the cutthroat atmosphere in japanese public schools where test scores make the difference between honor/affluence and poverty/disgrace to the family name.

Kenshin isnt fighting crime. He starts out trying to atone for his evil past by protecting the innocent, and later we discover that he actually had a death wish and wanted to be killed fighting to protect those he had killed in the past. Typical Japanese honor/samurai suicide story.

Not only the setting, but the story must be nigerian. What are the things we value here? Family, prestige, legacy, titles, health, religion, the domains are endless. Why do you think soap operas and religious dramas (pastor vs the devil) are so popular here?

A superpowered hero selflessly fighting crime will be a hard sell.

@TOH

So. You don't consider people of your nationality and gender to be morons. Good. Glad that's cleared up.

@both michelin and TOH

On triviality- I asked you why you consider the matters to be trivial. You both proceeded to explain to me why they are NOT trivial. So, you agree with me that the issues are non-trivial, is that correct?

@michelin

Societal and human perspectives- You consider advice to seek help from professionals or experienced peers as a 'societal perspective' which you consider 'ignorant'.

Before you go off on a tangent, please understand that I never talked about forgiving the man or going back to him. If you read my earlier post, I lumped these people together with you lot advising her to dump him. BOTH of you are advocating trivial solutions to a nontrivial problem.

I dont say she should forgive him. I dont say she should leave him. I say she should ask those in a better position to respond, either due to personal experience or professional expertise.

Please explain why that point of view classes me aming the ignorant, stupid, and empty-headed.

I dont have to stop talking to her for her to pay attention to you. Forums are asynchronous media, we can talk to many people at once. Have fun toasting her and please in future don't put your email address on the forum where everyone can see- the things that will spam you are automated bots that dont care about your plea of 'dont spam me abeg'

The problem with igbo irunmole is that most of us who remember it from TV recall it as a hilarious horror comedy

honestly it will be hard getting people to take it seriously

you could take a page from the book of kenshin and naruto- create a fictional universe based on but not directly corellated to traditional naija history

Naruto liberally combines modern day/ancient customs etc. That takes real skill, and not all of us are kishimoto's equal,

Kindly explain why you think this problem is trivially solved, and why you think those who believe it takes experience and expertise to solve marital disputes are people with no brains in their heads.

Also, do you really think 'Nigerian women are morons, plain and simple', as you said earlier?

Please don't repeat your views on the topic, I'm sure youve driven your points home. Just explain why you think those who do not consider this problem trivial are idiots.

Well, thanks drogba but the risk is just too great.

I havent heard anything about the new firmware improving things, and the number 1 problem, ie slowness seems to persist.

On the other hand, people have succesfully upgraded HTC tytn's to windows mobile 6 and the reports are of blazing speed. Im thinking I will get an HTC tytn or one of its clones (imate Jasjam /Dopod 838)

They are more expensive but by all accounts better.

Thanks everyone

We were talking about obgyns, not doctors in general

The neighbours' wife I mentioned earleir was a pediatrician and she led a life similar to the one you describe- she was at home all the time, and grateful patients in big cars were always sending her gifts.

However, my dad was always opn call, the Ambulance was always coming to the house to pick hi up cos some woman was in labour, and people forget the doctor that delivered their child/saved their wife from miscarriage INSTANTLY. No gifts, no thanks, no gratefulness. If anything they try to worm out of paying by trying to skip antenatal or whatever.

In the beginning when I still thought I was going to be a doctor, i was quite sure: NEVER NEVER NEVER gynaecology. NEVER. Later on that resentment spread to the whole profession. I still felt I neeeded to marry a doctor, tho, since Im used to having a doctor in the family, but most girls in the medical profession are (no offense) , ppsstsbsbbrttrtr. lets forget that ok? Lets just say its unlikely I'll marry a doctor chick now.

Anyway, on topic:

@vitastraka

Yep, its a big deal for them! I guess I feel the way all those busty girls feel on the 'big breast' threads cheesy

babyosisi:

Hmmm.

I see. So women *do* believe gynaecoloists are loaded *sigh, shaking head*

They are well taken care of, but loaded they most definitely are not. Like chris rock said, Rich- not wealthy. The sacrifices their wives make are many. You will live around other medical personnel, majority of them being married (doctor+ nurse is commoncommoncommon), and you will have to deal with hardly ever seeing your husband. I think 90% of our 'family friends circle' consisted of medical personnel, they are so insular. We lived in doctors'quarters after doctors' quarters, then finally all the doctors began buying/building houses in the same area,

The nurse/doctor wives were all happy, cos they work similar hours and they know the drill, but all the 'outsiders' , well,

And yes, outsiders included men who were married to doctor wives. I mean, I'd see my dad discussing with the my mother, the neighbour and his wife who was a doctor - and the poor dude would just be there, clueless, unable to grok what they were saying.

Well, this was all a long long long time ago. Maybe things are different now. However, many of my friends are now Doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physiotherapists from LUTH,UCH and abroad, and I get firsthand frontrow seat views of their lives. Yep, still insular.

(of course the fact that many of my friends are in the medical profession is a direct result of the fact that most of the people I know are doctors or related to doctors in a way, and most of them treat it as some kind of family inheritance thing. Which I REJECTED wholesale. DEFINITELY Not for me.)

Ideally, that should be the case. But unfortunately it appears women are just wired that way. They begin to feel anxious and uncomfortable when they arent satisfied that people are *not* whispering behind their backs. Men too, in some cases.

I'm not advocating that it is right, I'm simply saying its how they are, so please dont judge them for it.

@qby

dont judge her by saying her heart's not in it. If a girl follows her heart and ignores her friends/family, they will be ruthless with the 'I told you so' behaviour when there is even a tiny problem and she needs their support. Would you wish such a situation upon your friends?

Men have it easier, because if my friends see my GF say, 'dont marry her! shes from calabar! I heard they are witches!' , and I go ahead to marry her, well, tomorrow those same friends will act as if nothing happened. Not so for women.

(funny enough most guys refrain from voicing strong opinions on their friends gf's. Its like we know whats at stake. I wish women were the same)

You seem quite proud of the descipline you think you have instilled in your sister.

Do you really want her gossiping with her friends about their relationship with you.

Girls can be quite creative when discussing their boyfriends and bedroom antics, even if none ever took place.

You are putting your sister's respect for you at risk.

If the relationship doesn't work out, you could damage their friendship.

Stay away from your sisters' friends, even if they come after you. At least until you are comfortable with the idea of her giggling over your d!ck size with her pallies.

in the early days i used to get annoyed whenever i detected that women were subjecting me to the 'second opinion test', you know that crap where a 'friend' of hers surfaces out of nowhere and you are forced to be introduced/interact for no apparent reason.

However, nowadays I see it as positive. If a woman thinks you are worth exposing to her peer group, it means her mind at least is made up, and she needs their 'blessing'. If she suddenly changes after the 'test', its then up to me to decide whether I feel SHE is worth me going up against her peer group.

I expect a wise person will usually decide no, she is not worth it. remember when you marry a person you are marrying her friends and family. If they do not like you, you are wasting your time and hers.

Theres such a thing as peer pressure.

Sneer at it if you will, but it affects women as well as men. Women moreso, because to them, appearances are far more important than they will ever admit to.

Thats why they are so crazy about tidying up their boyfriends even though that will just make him more liable to be snatched.

A woman that changes decisions based on her friends opinions is not a

fickle-minded-emotionally-insecure-neurotic
rather, she is just a normal person. Please change your opinion or a lot of women are going to dissapoint you in the future, hopefully before you marry them.

I would have said that anyway. Many of my mates are married, and I am close to enough married couples to have been exposed to all sorts of marital problems.

From that I know two things: Knee-jerk responses like michelins' and those of other obviously unmarried people, both male and female, on this thread are dangerous- and I also know that when asked to deal with such problems I can absolutely *not* relate despite all that I have seen, talk less of someone who is used to observing from the standpoint of a dependant, a third-hand observer, or a trainee (premarital relationships)

Marriage is more than just sacred, it is life defining. If I asked you what to do when diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, how would you answer? Those that are qualified to answer are either doctors or fellow MS patients. Finding a woman on top of your husband is a similar blow to a person's future and propensity for happiness in this life.

We can't trivialise it by giving her advice as if the man were merely her boyfriend. "dump him" is wicked and deadly advice. "ignore him, men are like that" is even worse.

Like naijking said, people qualified for this study to a doctorate level. That should tell you that it is no simple matter.

I think mohadana is calling wesleyan stupid because he thinks that wes is making a tongue-in-cheek jab and calling his people prostitutes, hence the 'read between the lines'

mohadana, it is possible that wesleyan is ignorant of the implications of what he said. You should call him out on it first, instead of calling him stupid. If he goes ahead and says it directly, then you can attack his comments with as much venom as you can muster (understand that it is bad form to attack the speaker)

Also, I am Yoruba but when in school, our igbo teachers made it a point of duty to drill it into our heads: it is Igbo, not ibo. One of our teachers even used to punish anyone that pronounced it wrongly.

Pandora had a distribution problem

People I know who saw the comics and wanted them, couldnt find them.

Personally I had to speed-read them at a friends house, because he didn't want to let go of them- they were like gold. I assumed they would soon hit shelves, but they never did.

Some much-lower quality crap called 'kinetic' landed on silverbird galleria shelves some time ago and they flew off the shelves so fast, yet, no second issue, no nothing.

I think there's some deep rooted issue with printing and distribution that is crippling these guys, perhaps bankrupting them before they can turn a profit. Personally one of my ambitions is to start a general-purpose printing press when I have enough dough. I will certainly be less-than-hostile to anyone that attempts to pitch the idea of a comic book to me but, that could be a long tiome from now.

To be honest guys, personally I’m sick of this career path I choose, being a computer programmer. A couple of years ago it use to be all I was interested  in, through university to employment, I just loved working from one project to another, learning new stuff, showing off stuff I’ve done. But a couple of months ago I woke up one morning, and I just got sick of all this crap.

I’m sick of always staying up till 2am in the morning trying to find some stupid bug, I’m sick of always having to learn new stuff for work(we need you to learn how to do this Andréa,  we need you to learn how to write this Andréa, we need to switch to this technology, Andréa), I’m sick of deadlines (na beans, my boss, should come code some of these himself), I’m sick of dumb users who don’t know nothing, I’m sick of always sitting in from of da computer(started using glass last year) & I’m sick of always sitting down anyway,  I’m sick of never having time for myself, I’m sick of never having time for my BF,  I’m sick of my shitty pay, I’m sick of my shitty life. All thanks to me being a programmer, I just don’t think I’m cut out for this life anymore, just don’t know where all my passion for this went to.

Sometime I just want to quit and do something else, BUT WHAT? This is the only stuff I know, I’m stuck with this.  Told my mum she say a need a long break, like 3-4 month, but will need to look for a new job if I try that.
So, all of ya’all having fun doing this now pray you don’t end up like me. I know I’m going to quit this, just want to figure out what career I want do.
Well that’s that.
huh
To be honest, andre5, I really, really know where you are coming from.

But do you know what? Crappy conditions don't mean you should give up what you're good at.

Consider this: programming has such a low barrier to entry- no need to get a fancy degree, etc, all the literature is out there for anyone to read, technology changes so fast that old people cant sit back and claim to be gurus just based on experience,

YET there is still a shortage of programmers. What that tells you is that if you are good at programming, you have a valuable talent that you must not let die.

After working for God knows how long, battling with issus your superiors can not even begin to grasp or comprehend, struggling with idiotic users whose requirements change at the drop of a hat, working late, weekends, watching your eyesight fail, your health fail, theres no blaming anyone for getting fed up or burned out. The lucky peeps in jand or yankee just quit their jobs and go on breaks, knowing that they will never want for work. At ;least thats what my friends do.

However here, we just have to improvise. There are some things you can do, but I wont say them out here on NL. Hit me up on messenger with an offline message or two and I'll get across to you on that.

The life of a coder is hard, but rewarding, and doesn't have to lead to burnout.

I have left my 360 on for 72 hours straight, no overheating.

The rules are simple common sense:

do not put the 360 on a carpet
do not put it in the vertical standing position, EVER (too many drawbacks to list)
make sure it is on a raise, level surface with adequate airflow
don't put it in a drawer or cabinet space underneath or above your TV. Let it be to the side, standing on top of something that does NOT overheat, like a stool or table.
make sure the power brick is far, far away. The brick gets BOILING hot but in my experience, the console itself does not get that hot
Use air conditioning. When playing on gen, I use the fan but get this: I have left the 360 on, downloading, for 12+ HOURS with no airconditioning (but no human presence in the room either, and no TV to add heat)

I only had an overheating issue once, when I was daft enough to put it on top of my smokin' hot pentium 4 3.06 ghz prescott (those things are TOASTY). Otherwise, overheating is a non-issue.

The ps3 I hear, does a better job of conducting heat, but I dont know

I use ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso

read THIS thread:

http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1522

just one of the places where I went to discover that the seemingly inexplicable omission of simple MAKE was not an error, but on purpose!

notice that this guy's solution does not include how he isntallled java and gcc. The fact that hes still getting errors should show you that he did it WRONGLY. wrongly means he did it in the standard linux way. UBUNTU requires you to use APT to download a CRAPLOAD of dependencies before GCC works properly to compile downloaded tar.gz's.

Now even after doing that wahala I STILL needed to get kernel source headers KERNEL SOURCE HEADERS FOR SWEET JESUS SAKES because those idiots omitted them.

Once more the net saved me from corrupting my install, simply downloading the source headers from linux.org would have hosed my ubuntu install to death. I ahd to use, yes, you got it! APT to go and download ubuntu's special patched kernel source headers.

All requiring an internet connection! Why? why? WHY? must you have internet to use ubuntu?!?!?!?!?

Great Idea! A few suggestions:

1) Not a secret Govt project, a project initiated and funded by foreign oil companies and only suspected to exist by the Nigerian govt. Also, rather than growing the soldiers from scratch, Local ethnic militia members are abducted, brainwashed and genetically altered due to covert agreements reached between certain militia leaders.
Later in your story the govt will discover and attempt to hijack the project. You can have a supporting cast character as a civil servant investigating what he(she?) believes to be a bunkering racket leading to the hijack attempt.

2) Not dreddlocks by default. Try to come up with a more serious sounding acronym that will be shortened to dreddlocks by the govt agents that discover the project, due to the way the hair of DRDDL-injected subjects tends to grow.
