edwife: chillisauce thank you dear for your prayers,i can't thank you enough.
@damiso and kimoni thank you.
I didn't want to bring it here, but at this point i need all the prayers.
My family and I are going through tough time.During Friday’s Paris attacks, two of my cousins were affected-we didn't know where they were as they left for the soccer then to a birthday party in one of the restaurant until we got the news on Sunday night that one died and the other in the hospital (intensive care).
As if it was not enough, only for me to get a call this afternoon that the one in intensive care fell into coma and my aunt(their mum) had a stroke immediately. The woman is a widow who took care of her two boys and now that they are grown, she is about to lose both just like that?how fair is it? I grew up with them,it's like losing two brothers at the same time.I am confused. Oh my gosh Hugs edwife, God grant you all the succour that you all need at this point . |

SAMBARRY: I've attended an engagement wedding Like that when the Alabama ijoko or iduro,I can't even remember sef asked the groom to put 1hands on his wife's breast and put the second in her private part then pray that her babies will suck this breast, she will be fruitful, and that babies will pass through this vagina and her back won't stay long on the floor. I thought it was a joke unroll I started seeing people praying.I had to send my friends children outside the hall.I was like wtf. After the groom finished his own prayer,it was the bride's turn.they say she should put hand on his phenese and pray that it will always be active and useful and it won't suffer impotence and it'll be exclusively hers.no woman will share her" property " with her
I just buried my shock inside but I guess it's part of the Yoruba culture sambarry Me I don't know which Yoruba culture that one is o cos me I have not seen that before and I have gone to my fair share of Yoruba engagement( traditional weddings) Na wa. I guess they are putting faith into 'actions'. |

Eketem: First of all, does your wife not work?
Is she aware of what you earn?
Why should any sane woman ask for half of your salary for her people just for the holiday?
What happens in January for school fees and house rent?
What about your own people?
Anyway I don't totally blame her, una go dey marry and will not be doing financial planning and family budget. Husband will be doing super man and hiding his income. Wife will be doing " smartness " looking for opportunity to chop money.
It is insane for anyone to spend half his or her income just for their inlaws for Christmas.
I will advice that oga head of home you sit your wife down and do better family financial management. Sort out your income and budget sane expenditure for BOTH YOUR FAMILIES what you can both realistically afford as gifts, if she is not working she has no business doing father Christmas to her people abeg.
Women I am a woman and I say a husband is not a job or a source of income, if you are not working you have no business being family mother Christmas. If a husband decided to be magnanimous and give her something to give her parents let her collect with thanks and be greatful.
Oga plan ya family U don talk am all |

salsera: Some Naija churches have changed with timeliness. In my place if I leave home 6.30am for 1st service I'm home by 9am. So that's 2and a half hours incl of 1hour travel to and fro church. Only mid week services are long but that's because they are also prayer times and communion.
My mum attends Baptist and they have improved over the years just one Service 8.30,to 12noon inclusive of 1hour bible study.
It maybe a Black thing to be tardy though. I hear Black American churches are long. Maybe because blacks tend to be more social with Church. Yeah I guess so. God forgive me on days I have stuff to do I just sneak out before Grace because I don't want to spend another 30 mins greeting everyone |

naijababe: This is why I gave naija churches a wide berth a long time ago. My beautiful Oyibo church, service starts at 10.30am, we are done by noon and there optional tea and coffee for another 15mins. Sundays are depressing enough than to spend half of the day at church abeg You know Oyinbo( brits especially) can like to keep to time so it must affect church too. LOL |

Least we forget Are there poppy police in Canada too? As in those people who insist that you must wear a poopy on your coat or jacket all November if not you don't 'appreciate' the armed forces? Its getting annoying in the UK. I have given more than £5 to the Royal legion this month ( kids school and work charity drive) but the way the media moans and moans about prominent people who choose not to wear a poppy is annoying. |
Family › Re: Raising Business-savvy Kids by damiso(f): 10:23am On Nov 12, 2015 |
Timbuktou: And that's the point. The understanding. That's how to raise academically and socially sound kids, help them learn how to think and relate school work, which seems mostly abstract, with real life.
Of course, one can't understand without knowledge and they are right in that regard, also that kids learn through play. In fact, I'd say kids learn faster through play than in class, for male children at least. Cast your mind back to when we were younger than 5years old; we had mummy-and-daddy , and the girls used to cook grass, weeds and sand in tomato and milk tins. All na learning.
In my opinion, the extra lessons aren't a bad idea if the child is academically inclined and has one of those crazy photographic brains or if their basic education is clearly insufficient/faulty. Other kids should be studied and their strengths built upon. And the funny thing with most geniuses is they don't do well in schoolwork because their brains are faster and more advanced than what they're being taught in class. They are being dulled . Going back to Einstein, he was a woeful school student, but he had a crazy imagination.
Indeed, we do. I encourage my son to ask me questions by answering his questions as best as I can. The guy does ask the most unanswerable questions, though. Tell me about the unanswerable questions..LOL I wont lie sometimes I 'slip' into the typical naija mom ' don't kill me with questions' mode especially when I am tired.I decided to make it a conscious effort and these days we ( myself and hubby) even initiate the conversations. |
Family › Re: Raising Business-savvy Kids by damiso(f): 10:18am On Nov 12, 2015 |
Mindfulness: Nice Damiso. I would only replace the word encourage by the word support as kids naturally have a very strong desire to explore the world so they need no encouragement but rather support. This is why Timbuktou's son is asking him all these questions. It is a child's natural desire to explore the world. And as the good father that he is, he is not killing the boy's curiosity but there to help him find answers (support).
As they grow older we should give them methods and techniques to find the answers and solutions by themselves instead of offering every answer and solution on a silver plate. It will teach them problem-solving skills and boost their confidence and, who knows, maybe help them become visionaries who proffer solutions to humanity's most pressing questions.
Timbuktou, what you said about Einstein is a myth. You are right support is a much better word to use. |

double post |
Family › Re: Raising Business-savvy Kids by damiso(f): 4:20pm On Nov 11, 2015 |
Timbuktou: Of course, very true. I never lie.
Well, it really is a symptom of poor education. Wisdom/understanding is the ultimate aim of education, not just mindless memorization. Everybody wants their kids to be the next Einstein but they keep going about it the wrong way. Einstein himself was a serial failer and underperformer but he became a genius by understanding the world, and you cannot understand the world if you do not explore it and ask questions which today's parents are too busy and irritated to answer she their kids ask.
Then when the kids do poorly in class, they try to improve their grades by burdening them with even more after-school lessons, breeding more zombies. You are right and as a student I mostly always excelled at subject matters I understood. I think the issue and dilemma most parents face is that most educational system says you 'know and understand' by passing exams and acquiring more and more qualifications. And the way to pass those 'exams' is to know more and more which is why they enrol them in more 'learning'. I am guilty and I know how I used to snicker at my daughter's school Early learning style of 'learning through play'. I saw a topic on another forum that said children of ethnic origin in the UK are twice as likely to have extra/private tuition on top of their normal school learning. I don't know if that is such a bad thing as they probably see it as way to help them do better than their peers. We certainly need to spend as much time encouraging our children to explore the world around them. |
