The dumbing down as you call it is an inevitable outcome of the same passion psycho babble

Look at reality tv
It has spawned a whole generation of people who know the ticket to fame is to generate acts of shock value

A vacuous breed of followers line up behind them

I agree aptitude should be considered in identifying a career however it has been proven time and time again. Attitude is actually more critical for success in any field

How many people will be Thomas Edison

Leave passion to the Zuckerbergs
Oga pick Zuckerberg chop pepper on top his passion o grin

I agree reality TV has done a whole lot of damage although on the flipside one can say the media or rather the corporations behind the whole thing are actually smiling to the bank.So maybe they are making the money you mentioned we need to fund the research cheesy

Which is why I would not agree with financial rewards being the main angle to sell a profession because before you know you that 'Bill Gates was a drop out' ish will surface ( if hear that thing one more time ehn I will scream angry ) or any other poster person some youths nowadays tend to use to justify not wanting to face the grind. Why spend years studying engineering when Wizkid dropped out of school and has 'hammered' ( another word I hate). The girls is to buy Brazilian hair and publish selfie book like Kim K .

I know passion can be over rated and all but at least there should be some sort of motivation to be good at what you do.

Super!

I wonder how Medicine, Engineering can be equate to Gender Studies because of political correctness

All this new age, pyscho babble, do-what-u feel-drawn-towards teaching you hear nowadays... this is the result

The disinterest in the sciences is why the country is not moving forwards

The country needs 24/7 power, jobs and infrastructure (roads, bridges, water)

They will be provided by power stations, money and scientists

Simple
While I agree that we need more scientists as there is actually a dearth of scientists everywhere,(in the UK they are practically begging science graduates with bursaries and scholarships to become science teachers) I don't think the 'do what you are drawn to' is a bad piece of advise in all totality. I also don't fully agree with the future earning potential being the main driver in advising a child to choose a profession. If we are too look at it on the basis of future earning a science teacher who studied a STEM course might actually never out earn a corporate lawyer or investment banker. Viability of a course, interest, aptitude, future earning potential, etc. and so many factors need to be considered in choosing a profession. I agree that countries and the world need a lot STEM professionals to succeed but I don't agree with coercing or implying that anything other than studying a STEM course makes you less valuable to society or a likely failure in Life( I know cos I had this issue with my dad). That said of course the person who builds bridges is very important to society and contributes more to society than a philosophy graduate but the reality is not everyone can study the STEM courses.

I think more children in general need to be encouraged into more intellectual pursuits. There is too much dumbing down in the world today. And yes more girls need to be taught to aspire to want and add value to society regardless of profession. Marriage is not a profession or occupation.

My dear it took me ages to work out what is right for me
Ignorance is the problem
Like you I thought it was only down to excecise
Its not
The advantage of excecise though, is it makes you think twice before putting anything in your mouth, when you think of how long you spent on that crosstrainer to loose those calories you are about to eat in one mouthfull grin
It took time but now I know what to do and I am doing it plus Ive also managed to live as well
Sometimes you go on diets that rob you of proper living and thats why they are unsustainable and people fall off them
I still have my jollof rice/fried rice at weekends and I am still steadily loosing. I have an owambe today sef grin
Slower than I would have liked, but it stays off and doesnt come back and I am still enjoying my life
I was at redhot last night grin
But its easier for me becasuse oga too is on board
If he was demanding egusi and poundo yam every night, it wouldnt be this easy.
Portion control . . Im getting there
have you got one of those portion control plates? They are quite good
People keep asking me 'what diet are you on ' and I say it's called healthy everyday living.
Although I keep getting 'it's enough now' messages on my bb(just even got one now grin).

Yeah I got the portion control plates off Amazon and i meal prep everyweek which means at every point I don't have to eat just anything even when I get hungry. Hubby said to me yesterday though that I am becoming one of those fitness nazis as he ordered pizza and I did not even eat a tiny grain of it cheesy me myself am getting worried that my OCD don dey reach this fitness and healthy eating things.I can't believe the amount of self control I have these days with food and you diagonised it correctly grin I know how many burpees ( I hate burpees embarassed) I have to do to burn one slice of pizza so I just jejely keep off.

H
tearoses:
Thank you very much Dami
You hit the nail on the head

Rather than put all the blame on the woman, how about seeing it as "BOTH" your problem and deal with it together
There is a girl I know, a young wife with 2 kids struggling with her weight
Inlaws stay with them and both Hubby and inlaws expect her to come home and cook poundo and eba every evening.
She joined a gym, but they will be calling her duing workouts; come home, we are hungry, where are you, even though she had set days for the gym that she stuck to so they knew where she was
In the end she gave up and cancelled the gym menmbership.
I know how much she struggled
Will it be fair for her husband to wake up tommorow and complain that his wife is lazy?

In an ideal world, husband and wifey should be supporting each other but many times it doesnt always happen.
Weight gain is also a gradual thing due to bad habits and in some cases its just lack of knowledge on what foods to eat and not to eat, portion size etc.
The day I knew that carbs are not my friends and an wholy African diet did me no favours was the day my scales started registering lower figures grin grin
Na wa for her hubby and in laws.but I get what you mean.

And you are right it's ignorance sometimes especially on the food part because you can never out exercise a bad diet. Me I would go to the gym and come back home and eat 2 big croissants and one mega big mug of tea plenty sugar and evaporated milk cheesy and I wondered why I was not losing any weight grin one needs to really keep learning about food.

Don't be scared of carbs sis. You just need to eat more of the complex carbs and study up on which of the macro nutrients of food(me sef am still studying it I Neva reach like babe3 grin).Portion control portion control I can't emphasise enough is very key.

calorie counting is a bit tricky and I have never gotten it but I can confidently say I have gotten portion control on almost lock down.

Even fats are not such an ugly word .sugar or should I say processed sugar is the real enemy these days.

I have really stripped my food down to basically what it does it for me nutritionally and according to my goal at that point.
FamilyRe: Women, Childbirth And Laziness by damiso(f): 12:36pm On Oct 10, 2015
I won't lie (kimoni cheesy)me sef used to use that child birth excuse but deep down I know or rather knew all those croissants, brioche, cinnamon twirl etc also had a part to play as well grin grin

That said people are different and have different health issues so it's really unfair to judge and tag all women (or people) who lack motivation to lose weight as lazy. Keeping fit and living a healthy lifestyle is a mental battle and some people genuinely have issues (depression anxiety low self esteem etc) that they need help with before tackling the other issue which is weight loss.

I have really really changed my lifestyle this year but one thing I am really also working on is not having the judgemental superiority complex that a lot of people who are fit/lead fit lives have. I will try to encourage people to take it a step at time and not dismiss them as 'lazy'. I now do 15km Runs regular but there was a time I could not walk 1km without moaning.

Rather than use lazy, let's encourage people to try to lead healthier fit lives.start from somewhere , walk to pick your child from school, take 15m walk every evening ,there are so many short videos on the internet that you can use to start working out. Reduce portions, eat less processed foods, drink more water, readup on it and just decide I CAN DO IT not for anyone but to feel better in myself.

Well done to her .That is a lot of hours to be pulling on your feet though. Funny enough she might end up pulling the same hours or more sef when she eventually gets her dream of owning her own business. embarassed owning a business especially in the foods and hospitality industry ain't beans.

This life is not easy but what can one do but do what one's gotta do.

I hope those children appreciate the sacrifice. They must be very brainy as well.

The bolded got me cracking up! grin

Exactly!

Many of them know some of these things are right but have absolutely no balls to say it because they are terrified of the leftist British media coming to attack them with front page headlines like "Outrage", "Apologise", "Xenophobic" etc.

I have said it before on NL. The UK media is DESTROYING the country. They are making it impossible to make sensible policies, only populist/liberal policies are the only ones allowed and will not lead to media attacks.

This thing I am saying about the UK media is something you will be hearing them discuss in future. I can bet anyone on that. They are destroying the country.

This is how China and co will overtake them because they do not have such a problem and can make sensible policies.

Look at the pressure they are putting on the UK government to take refugees.

Refugees that are too large and some you don't even know how extremist they are. Worse still, when the local population is already very sensitive to migration.

And that foooool in Germany called Angela Merkel publicly told them to all start coming. Now today they are saying they can't take anymore. I have never seen such stupid political proclamation in my life.

"We are going to take 800,000 refugees this year"!

And you do not expect all soughts to pack their bags and try their luck even if they are not in real danger?

Some people are even throwing their passport away and claiming to be Syrians.
First thing my husband said( even though I won't lie that picture of the lil boy tugged at the emotional mother side of me),was wait why are they not pressuring Saudi Arabia,Dubai,Kuwait and Qatar to take on some refugees as well. The whole refugee crisis thing is mixed feelings for me and to be honest I can't see taking on more and more refugees being the long term solution.that said the human angle kinda makes it difficult to say don't take refugees. I kinda see David Cameron's point on not taking on those already in Europe cos like you said how do we know who is Syrian?

That Robert Downey video was just cringe worthy.

I could not believe my eyes that for two days straight a man calling a woman 'stunning' on LinkedIn was news that actually made the headlines. I was at home feeling ill and it was on every talk show /news programme/panel talk. Geez it was really annoying.i was like all hail the sensationalist British media. undecided

I like David Dimbleby witty and straight to the point without necessarily being confrontational. I have missed watching Question time but I need to sleep early these days.

Sagamite:
Yep.

Just like they did against UKIP.

I have never seen such media intense and bias attack in my life especially from the BBC and [the homosexuality-champions] Channel 4.

Relentless attack to tarnish the party and/or make it look like an unserious set-up.

Coming up with one "ist" and "phobic" after the other to throw at them.

"Extremist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, sexist, transphobic, alarmist etc".

Nigel Farage worked hard and did well. They just kept attacking with accusations to keep him busy (not talking about policy) and make his party look bad (if you keep on talking negative about someone's character, they will not look respectable, hence unelectable).

That is a tactic these western jourrnalist use, so that they can throw their hands in the air and say they are not bias and are just asking questions.

But if you are asking such negative questions all the time, then your accusations will subconciously be highly likely associated with the target. They know this and employ it very well alot of times.

If I keep on asking a man in public, at different times, over and over and over again, if he is sure he does not molests kids, soon people would soon start thinking "he might be doing that" even if there is no concrete evidence he does. It is human nature to the less sharp mind, which form the majority of people.

That is what is called media bias.

What this Jeremy Corbyn is going to try and bring to UK politics is the Scandinavian socialist system.

I am sure everyone knows it has worked perfectly well for the Scandinavians, so I wonder why all the subtle attack. The constant "is he unelectable?", which they hope would stick once they ask it over and over again.

That said, do I think a rapid application of the Scandinavian socialism would work in the UK?

No.

The British people have a different mindset and culture. It will take decades to change it. So you have to implement such changes extremely slowly.

That said, I am sure if Labour wins London Mayoral elections, house price growth will slow drastically.
While I don't actually agree with some of UKIPs policies the truth is most conservative backbenchers and members actually agree with most of them . But because of all this phoney centre right left centre centre centre rubbish they can't actually say it. UKIP actually had 4 million votes so it tells us a lot of people agree with them.

Yeah I think Jeremy Corbyn is actually a good thing for Labour because I think all the main stream parties esp in England (SNP is an exception). Unelectable, maybe (partly cos of the annoying Tory rhetoric of the working people vs 'benefit scroungers') but at least the landscape will be more varied and not just the 'oxbridge' career politicians that all look and sound the same.
