You borrow to start a business. If you are really knowledgeable about finance, the bigger your ideas, the bigger you borrow.

If he were hiding, that would be better, but he was doing it in front of his closest frirnds who I am sure would have stopped him. I strongly suspect it was a late diagnosis. By the time he knew, he might have been at Stage 4 or thereabout.
