The usual from deepsight, . . . . When the boko haram were running amok in borno did they differentiate between atheists and believers? As alqaeda planned its 9/11 bombing did it consider the indifference of atheists towards religion? Whether you admit it or not religion affects us all. You all are potential terrorists- its a well known fact religion addles the mind. Its pertinent that we educate and try to snap the deluded out of their delusions cos frankly they're a threat to us all. Religions even affects politics. President Bush vetoed useful and potentially life saving stem cell research for religious reasons not minding atheists exist. The other day image123 was telling me he and jesus will kill and destroy all unbelievers under instruction from god. Such a lunatic only needs someone to claim to be jesus and the massacre begins. We atheists know we have ONE life. No spiritual partying with 72 virgins or 144,000 jews when we die. Its only wise that we protect it from crazy-heads dont ya think?
Fair enough Tudor - BUT - you will agree that belief in the existence of God simpliciter does not lead to terrorism. Fundamentalism and Fanaticism lead to terrorism. Don't you think that you should therefore wage your war against such fundamentalism and fanaticism only? And not wage a war against people believeing in God per se. If protecting people from violence was your mission, you would become a neutral arbiter urging every one to respect every one else's faith, and campaining against fundamentalism. If that was your goal, that is what you would focus on doing. But that is not your goal. You goal is to ridicule that which you perceive to be ridiculous. I dey lie? |
Chrisbenogor:Yes. . .God does not need anybody's acknowledgement. He is too transcendant for that. BUT! - Note carefully my words: Deep Sight: |
mazaje:Mazaje, please stop mis-defining atheism. When you say that as an atheist you deny gods of man made religions, you are insinuating that if there was a god that you found not to be of man made religions, then you may believe in such a god. That is not atheism, because atheism denies the existence of God or gods, whether man made or not, period. |
Admittedly these are very barbaric practices given to the Jews of that time. But Abuzola, you know very well that Islam gives women an even rougher deal. Anyhow, Christian Soldiers - Davidylan, Noetic, come and defend these. And dont try to tell us any thing like- "Its old testament" because it remains a part of your bible till this day, and secondly it remains on record as the commandment of your Abrahamic God to "his people". What sort of God would give such barbaric commands? Do you have the moral authourity to slander Islam for similar injunctions? |
Doing good for goodness sake only is absolutely correct. What about doing evil. Is it perhaps worthwhile to be aware that evil will rebound on us? What about that little saying - what goes around comes around? Is it meaningful for u? Do you belive that you are a material body only? Do you think there is a spiritual part to you? |
But what do you think of the gravity argument? Does it not seem to you that an observable physical law like that will in reality be a universal principle merely appearing in different forms in different realms. . .? |
Krayola:Can you tell us why you think Karma is bullshit? Has it ever occured to you that it is the spiritual variant or equivalent of the law of gravity? Each person is a small spiritual magnet, just like the earth. When you throw something away from you (such as love or hatred) it rebounds based on magnetism. Just the way gravity functions in physical terms. Have you not observed even in more simple terms, how a smile elicits a smile, and hatred begets hatred - every day? What do you think? |
noetic15:Noetic! This is just brilliant! This is why i like you too. . . despite being a dogmatic christian, you spice up your posts with good arguments now and then. . . excellent thinking, especially on the Destiny bit. . . Might i ask you: do you believe in re-incarnation. . . |
wirinet:THIS is a very very good write-up, except the part about "how does one remember God". . . that was rather lame. . . I would like to ask you one question: What's your reaction to the proposition that other than the material body which dies, man also posesses a living spirit. |
Really, should we not be asking ourselves why there are even Atheists on the Religion Board at all? After all, they deny the existence of God, and reject religion, so what have they got to do with anything concerning religion? Should they not simply hands-off the Religion Board? Why are the Atheists so obsessed with religion? If I believe that rats do not exist, i would not go around buying rat poison every day trying to kill the rats. If God, does not exist, then its a waste of time talking about Him, right? What really are the Atheists looking for? |
Chrisbenogor:Hi Chris, I had felt i had addressed this. But for clarity let me state as follows - I described the perfection of God (perfection here refers not to the Abrahamic ideas of perfection, but to Divine Singularity and immutability) as being a global "oneness." If we are able to conceptualize this properly we should recognise God as being firmly beyond anything in creation. The laws set in motion by God (which laws lie inherent in God as the very cause of all reality) are perfect and suit the purpose of creation to a tee. For this reason when a man jumps up, he falls down, the law of gravity taking perfect effect just as surely as the law of karma will assure a falling down, for every jumping up, metaphorically speaking. The richness and perefction of the laws of God are such that they are self sufficient, and accordingly living in tandem with nature and conscience is all that a man needs in this life, the adamantine laws of God will doubtless operate on every person's destiny in such a manner as to deliver to each person that which he deserves based on the excercise of his free-will. Thus, globally speaking, one does not necessarily have to know, interact with, or even contemplate God in order to live a fruitful life on a basic level, as God in his Divine Abstraction is absolutely unsearchable and indeed incomprehensible. Nevertheless it is important to add that knowing the things of God, the laws of God, and the purposes of God will enrich a man's life beyond compare. We can decipher these things by reading the Book of Life - which is nature around us. Therein, all the secrets, all the lessons, and all the things of God which we need to know, are clearly revealed. Therein, without recourse to any church or mosque, and without recourse to any "saviour" or "prophet", every man can discern his conscience, and live in justice and purity, with a bold hope of one meaningful and beautiful life after another. To my mind, the only real danger inherent in not believeing in God, is that it leads some people to entirely doubt the existence of any spirituality whatsoever, and i am certain that such an attitude will serve to weaken the spiritual part of a persons's life, in some degree or the other. Regarding the question of why God created us, let me briefly say this. Creation is nothing but the natural self - expression of God's mind, and it could not be otherwise. You, Chris, have thoughts everyday, and those thoughts are real things. On the divine level, thoughts become reality and translate into creation. |
MyJoe:GBAM! |
There are two cardinal aspects of this mess that the CBN Governor got disastrously wrong. You see, when laws, regulations and procedures are laid down, the purpose is to avert anarchy. If we continue to act with disregard for regulations, we will continue to be a disjointed and directionless society. That forms the plank for the emergence of a failed state. The two critical bits that Sanusi got wrong: Regulatory Discretion & Procedure and Approprition of Public Funds. If you are familiar with the Fundamentals of Regulatory Oversight in any industry, you will be aware that the cardinal function of the Regulator is to guarantee a healthy industry and in so doing, the Regulator has various tools of intervention. The tools are to be excercised progressively in such a manner that correction of anomalies is effected with minimal disruption to the system. The ultimate sanctions are only reserved for irreversible situations and even at that ONLY after the application of intermediary measures which have failed. Sanusi did not apply any intermediary measures whatsoever before wielding the big stick and he failed to note the likely ripple effects of loss of local and international confidence and run on deposits that attend such public shows of regulatory might. It is therefore clear that as a Regulator he acted hastily, and without discretion, which is scandalous considering that this is a post he has held for less than two months. Clear measures availed him in taking gradual steps to correct the anomalies. Furthermore a Regulator must be impartial - and in this he has manifestly failed by implicitly giving the other banks more time to tidy up their books while dragging the first lot into the mud. The Second major point is Appropriation of Public funds. Under the Constitution of Nigeria ALL FUNDS - HOWEVER SOURCED, PRODUCED OR DERIVED, accrue FIRST, AND AUTOMATICALLY TO THE CONSOLIDATED FEDERATION ACCOUNT, AND NO FUNDS MAY BE WITHDRWAN THEREFROM WITHOUT APPROPRIATION FOR SUCH PURPOSE BY THE PARLIAMENT (NATIONAL ASSEMBLY). Accordingly, once monies are printed (which is at all events a questionable approach to creating wealth) such monies accrue first to the Federation Account and must be appropriated before being touched at all. Sanusi made two infantile arguments in his attempt to evade this. He stated that it was not an expenditure but a loan. This is irrelevant because the Constitution does not make a distinction. It states that ALL monies must be appropriated before being withdrawn. Thus it does not matter what you are withdrawing the money for: it must be appropriated before being withdrawn. Secondly he stated that the money was not from the Federation Account. What a laugh - the law states that ALL monies should go to that account! His action sets a very dangerous precedent: In future the CBN Governor may print trillions of naira and disburse as he pleases since in his argument, its a loan. So perhaps he can print 100 trillion naira and give out as loans without the proper process of legislative approval? Also, if the other banks he is still auditing are found to need help, what will he do? Go back to his back yard and print more billions? Aside from the illegality pointed out above, as an economist he should be aware that such reckless printing of monies is a key cause of inflationary trends within the economy. Recall that both the US and UK effected similar bail-outs last year at the height of the recession. It may interest you to know that in both societies the actions were carried out by the Central Banks through Acts of Parliament. So you see, my dear brothers - we cannot carry on with our scattered, gra-gra approach to doing things just any how in this country. |
Its a nice idea, but a bit too cluttered and loud something neater and softer, more spaced out. |
Chrisbenogor:If one lives in tandem with natural law and conscience, without any reference to God, it is well with one. However natural laws are God's laws. And a knowledge of God enriches the human spirit. |
bawomolo:Christianity. But i have flirted with quite alot. . . Rosicrusians, The Grail Message, Islam, Buddhism, Jehovah's witnesses . . . in the constant search for truth. Dogma is what chased me away. . . i could see some of the obvious fallacies in dogmatic claims and i hated the way people decide that matters of faith must never be reasoned out at all. Imagine the christian claim that Jesus of Nazareth is God ? ? ? ? I have always believed in God (although for some time about 10 years ago when in university, i struggled to conceptualize HIM and almost became atheistic or more precisely, agnostic). The truth is that if one lives in tandem with natural law and conscience, it will be well with your spirit and your life even if you have no concept of God. But a concept of God will broaden every man's mind and spirit extensively, and enrich your life with purpose. |
wirinet:Good question. Since natural laws are inherent, natural dictates of ethics, positive laws tend to follow natural laws for the most part. We have all agreed that "Do not murder" is a natural law, and it is therefore no surprise that it is a Positive Human Law as well. However there are many natural laws that may not necessarily be enacted as human positive laws. E.g: It might be unnatural to be homosexual, but there may be no positive law stating that such is wrong or a crime. This brings us to another realm of Jurisprudence called "Law and morals." Basically the principle is that not all immoral acts are illegal acts and vice versa. But law tries to be moral and it is often said that immoral laws are illegitimate and end up being revolted against. Specifically addressing your question, fidelity to a spouse is not a positive law, because you will find no laws commanding such or punishing the failure to be unfaithful. You will only find such laws under the muslim sharia legal system. It is instructive to note that these are not secular states and thus have sought to merge law and morals based on religion. Thus all things consisdered immoral are criminalised, such as mere drinking of alcohol. In a sharia domain therefore, the fidelity requirement is a positive law, springing from moral codes but not so in the western nations and indeed most of the world. Fidelity springs from a moral consciousness, and for me, is more of natural law. It is my personal view that fidelity is a natural law on account of the pain and disturbance that infidelity evidently brings to people. However i admit that this is a possibly controversial area, because many people will insist that it is equally natural for males to have more than one partner. Its simple: any natural law enacted into law becomes a positive law as well. |
wirinet:Dear Wirinet. The Big Bang happened. No dispute there. It's expansion is still observable today. The question is what caused it? I say - The oneness of infinity, which is the sum of all eternal time, infinite space and existence: I call that oneness God. I also say: It was a deliberate creative act. I can advance some rationale for these. What do you say caused it? |
Please see this link: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-329406.0.html But in summary, although one should pursue universal harmony in consonance with the laws of God, living right in those laws is sufficient, because God in HIS divine excellence is ultimately unapproachable. . . Nevertheless, he still remains personal in a manner of speaking, and one can access high spirituality by tuning in to HIM. |

huxley:Huxley, it has come to it that I have school you - Your reasoning capacity, is well er. . . very very suspect. . . Let me put you through. . . Here was your initial statement: huxley:Understand your statement carefully - you said - Sin is meaningless. You also added: huxley:Which suggests to the rational mind that you do not believe in wrong acts INDEPENDENT of secular laws made by humankind. Since it is difficult for you to understand basic word sequences, I will rephrase it for you: Since you allude to the absence of an external reference point for wrong acts, and state that the only reference point is CRIME, which you state to be a secular concept of humankind, then it is clear that you deny the existence of independent reference points for right and wrong, other than that which is expressly stated to be so by humankind. You went further to state: huxley:Inherent in the above statement is a shocking self-contradiction. Listen carefully - you stated "Suppose the society were to decide. . ." Do you fail to realise that this still holds the society as the only reference point because you have expressly stated - "suppose the society were to decide. . ." Thus, you are still refering to decisions of the society! Let me ask you: suppose the society were to decide otherwise? Suppose the society were to decide that it is not wrong to take actions on people without their consent? Aha, do you see now where you have gone wrong? Because human history is replete with instances where the society has decided otherwise. Indeed, mornachical, dictatorial and oligarchical regimes have been around much longer than regimes that guarantee individual rights. Thus, under your reasoning, the societies (e.g: communists regimes, military regimes) decided that it was right to oppress people, to take actions on them without their personal consent. These were human laws, (E.g: Press Limitation Laws) just like the aztec human sacrifices were human laws, in which the society decided. So when i asked you to go and study natural law and positive law, it was not an insult, Huxley, it was a genuine perception that you do not yet understand those concepts. Because you need to appreciate that natural law refers to natural dictates of what is right and wrong independent of anything stated in human laws. Positive Law, refers to the laws made by men. Thus, once you state, as you did, "Suppose the society were to decide. . ." you are still refering to positive law, and still justifying your assertion that only human beings determine what is right and wrong. And i asked you: Human Beings decided that human sacrifices were right. Societies decided that the guillontine was right. Communists decided that inidividual liberty was rubbish. Did that make these right? The fact that societies decided (in your words) - did that justify these things? This flies in the face of your assertion supposing that societies would decide that no actions should be taken without individual consents. You failed to see that that was still an assertion of positive law. You failed to see the reverse supposition, namely - "Suppose the society were to decide. . . that Huxley should be beheaded as a sacrifice to the gods. . . ![]() Would that make it right? Give it up man - it is clear that there are things that are inherently wrong regardless of human laws. That's why Fela stated: "Human Rights na my property. . . you cant dash me my property". He was refering to natural law, and the fact that no human law could take away or give his natural rights. Therefore your statement "Supposing the society were to decide. . ." is a violent contradiction which shows that you are yet to grasp the principles of natural law. Get it? |

m_nwankwo, please modify your quote above to remove the email address, thanks. |
wirinet:Good grief. I am quite astonished. 1. Where in heaven did you get the "rules" from - remember we are talking about the cause of all existence - so no "rules" exist. You simply jump to the point where the rules are and fail to ask your self what brought about those rules? Nah, try harder. 2. This is the same way when i gave you the analogy of the dots forming a square, you jumped vast distances and arrived magically at a point where "life" was already in existence and stated that if life was along those lines, the dots would line up accordingly. You failed to see that you were not addressing the core cosmological question of how did such life even get there in the first place, and particularly that you would have to apply the same or even greater odds than to the arrival of that "life" or those "rules" that you use as a premise!
Hi Krayola. Thanks for your contribution. I draw what I wrote from the Grail Message by Abd-ru-Shin as well as my personal experience of worlds which are beyond the grasp of material senses or instruments devised to improve our physical senses. I have not studied Lurianic Kabbalah, or any other school of Kabbalah. But I do know that Kether is not Parsifal. However I do not wish to explain how I know that Parsifal is not Kether without studying/practicing Kaballah. Stay blessed.
M_Nwankwo, this is a very loaded statement. Atheists:Ha ha. . . escapist. . . because that's just like saying: "Since i dont know who gave birth to Leonardo Da Vinci, then, the Mona Lisa had no Painter, and came into existence by itself" |
noetic10:Deist, i am not so spiritually insular as to fail to sense the existence and purpose of God. But see short clarification here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-329406.0.html |
Deep Sight:Is nobody interested in knowing the meaning of MOGANALA? banom:MOGANALA is a renegade group of Niger Delta Militants attempting to draw attention to themselves. Thay have chosen NL for this purose and are determined to acquire fame by denying the existence of God. MOGANALA means MOtley GAng of NAira Land Atheists. |
