How dare they insist on rights that they do not give others? ? ? ?

What is wrong with giving the First Cause a name, if it appears to us that the First Cause is self-conscious and intelligent?

And what is wrong if that name happens to be Chineke or Olodumare?
@Deepsight. It will be difficult to answer your question without explaining what you mean by time. During a dream lasting few seconds, a man can see his birth, youth, adulthood, oldage and even death. Yet what he took few seconds for  experience in a dream may take 70 or more years to experience in full day counsciousness. Is the time in his dream the same with the time in brain day counsciouness. I guess you believe that future events can be predicted. What time is the prophet or seer using to make the predictions? If it is possible to predict the future, why do you think that it is not possible to recall the past? I may make a contribution on time travel but for the moment I will watch the thread develop. Stay blessed.
This is exactly why i opened this thread - because the definition of time itself is so complex!

Someone had indicated that "every moment is imbued with eternity" and that could well explain the dream-time phenomenon you mentioned.

Cardinally we should know if in fact there is nothing like time - just a still permanent instant in which people and matter move, as opposed to the movement of time. But such a concept itself if fraught with difficulties given the fact that the age of the dinosaurs for example, was a different point from the point of World War 2?

I fear that time can never be understood, and i have serious doubts about the claims regarding space-time and the big bang. The universe is expanding into already existing space, so how could it be said that the big bang created space. Space is infinite!

So is time!

^^^ Allta - matter will always have weight once the planet you are talking about has a magnetic core that provides sufficient gravitational pull for life to subsist therein.

And, weightless or not, have you really considered what it will mean to bend space-time? Have you considered that it will doubtless mean massive disruptive movements all matter including planets, stars and galaxies. . . are you aware that even minute cosmological movements could be disastrous, not to talk about bending the element in which everything is contained? ? ?

You are talking about rippping apart the universe!

YES - So if God could have done this, BUT did NOT do it, thus ensuring that there would be SIN and suffering (causing him to REGRET having created MAN), then he CANNOT be an OMNIBENEVOLENT being.

HENCE, a contradiction or internal inconsistency in this given ontology of God. Existence does not admit of contradiction, thus God with the given properties CANNOT exist.

My case RESTS.

Thank you for helping me prove the non-existence of your God.
Brilliant, Huxley! I demand that we should not respond any further to this thread as Huxley has conclusively proved that Noetic's God does not exist.

But please let's note that even if "God" as defined by the Bible/ Quoran does not exist, this does not nullify the existence of an uncaused cause, a prime mover and core creative element for the universe. That element, which manifests attributes of intelligence and Power, is what is defined as God within the cosmological argument.

So God exists, but Noetic's god has today been put to the sword by Huxley.

Christianity Etc › Re: Could It Really Be That A Person Can Be Born Gay? by DeepSight(m): 4:07pm On Sep 24, 2009
@ SEFAGO;

@ Sagamite -

Interesting debate you have going on. May i present myself as a judge of sorts. I do happen to have a legal background.

In reaching my conclusions, i shall use the premises and resultant conclusion set forth by Sefago below:

SEFAGO:
Basically my argument is predicated on these premises:
1) Humans are animals
2) Animals engage in homosexuality
Conclusion: Therefore in the natural order of things homosexuality is not a deviance from expected biological behavior.
Premise 1 - Humans are Animals.

Although this premise is only partially correct, and may be said to be an over-statement or a limitation of definition regarding the nature of humanity, i will not dwell on it because humans undisputably are given of some of the same physical instincts as animals are. I will therefore give this premise a pass mark. Let's proceed.

Premise 2 - Animals engage in Homo Sexuality.

Now this premise is fraught with severe problems. Some of these problems are:

1. It is a mis-characterization of an exception as a rule:

Let me elucidate:If one were to state: "Human beings eat food" - the direct inference would be that eating food is a normal and standard practice for human beings. That would be a correct inference as the statement has been set out in broad, generalistic terms.

Let's take another statement: "Human beings are cannibals." This is another broad generalistic statement that could lead to a wrong inference: namely, that it is in the nature of human beings to be cannibals, and thus a normal and standard human practice. The correct way to phrase this statement would be - "Some human beings are cannibals." In this way it becomes clear that it is not necessarily within the nature of human beings to be cannibals, but that some human beings do practice such.

This is why i said that the second premise is a mis-characterization of an exception as a rule. It should properly have read: "Some animals engage in homosexuality" - thus making it clear that homosexuality is not necessarily the norm within the animal sub-set.

If it is not the norm within the animan sub-set, we can hardly use this premise to reach a conclusion that it is anything but an exception for human beings (who, by the way, have a higher ethical reasoning capacity). That would be a fundamental contradiction in terms.

Even if the foregoing reasoning is wrong (i doubt that it is), there is a second and even more fundamental problem with the premise. This problem concerns the nature of animal homosexuality in the first place. To wit -

2. Animals are not homosexual in the proper definition of the word. Let's watch the cases of so-called animal homosexuality. Do such cases have any co-relation with human homosexuality? I contend that they are entirely dissimilar. This is the reason:

Animals do not make a distinction regarding the object of their sexual attention with reference to instinctive physical motions. For example when my dog is on heat, he will attempt to mount anything at all: including humans. He will push himself against a pole, against me, and against other dogs (male or female) in excercising the instinctive sexual motion. He does not see and develop a desire for a fellow male, he only makes instinctive sexual motions directed at anything. This is significantly different from humans who will see and have specific desires for persons of the same sex. No animal will engage in homosexual conduct if there is an available female on hand, against which it may throw its instinctive physical motions, but human homosexuality will actively disdain the female and specifically desire the male.

If you appreciate the foregoing, you will understand that animals are not in fact homosexual at all - in the proper sense of the word. Do they have a homosexual desire? Can you show me even one single animal that only sexually targets the same sex? You cannot, because animals are not homosexual in the definition of the word, and their so-called acts of homosexuality, comparatively speaking, are really just mindless acts of masturbation on any available entity.

Therefore, on either or both planks - the point must emphatically be made that animal acts of homosexuality can never be a premise for human homosexuality because as i have shown above -

i. Animals are not homosexual within the context of homosexual desire and

ii. Even if they are, it is the case that some animals are, and not all. It is the exception, rather than the rule, and as such this could not possibly make a case for human homo-sexuality being anything but the same: the exception and not the rule.

Given that the premise fails, the conclusion also naturally fails.

However, the Conclusion, if i might add, suffers independent problems of its own.

The conclusion states: "Therefore in the natural order of things homosexuality is not a deviance from expected biological behavior."

Can we define the word "deviation".

Without bothering to consult a dictionary, i suppose that we can all agree that a deviation is a departure from a norm, a variation or a digression.

"Expected biological behaviour", must clearly refer to the in-built sexual orientation geared towards biological goals. That's the only apt use of the word "biological" within that phrase. It is patently clear, from both the structure of reproductive organs, and the biological result of copulation (reproduction) that the sexual behaviour expected by nature should be heterosexual in nature. In addittion to the fact that homosexuality is not the norm in any human society, it could thus be said to be both un-natural and anti-social. At the very minimum, it definitely represents a deviation, however that may be defined.

With a heavy heart, although i do appreciate SEFAGO's good efforts and good reasoning, i am constrained on the basis of the deductions set forth above, to conclude that both his premises and his conclusion are deficient and significantly flawed even in terms of logic alone, but also in terms of sociological and biological considerations.

However: addressing the topic of this thread, i must state without much ado that although i previously had a murderous attitude to the very idea that any person could be gay, i concede that it is patently obvious, and also empirically verified, that some persons have abnormal hormonal imbalances which affect their sexual orientation. Some men have degrees of female hormones that render them effeminate, and some women (beard and all) have degrees of male hormones that render them mannish, and thus inclined to become lesbians. This is a scientific fact, and no person can contest this.

But in summary - it's ceratinly abnormal and unnatural and perhaps scientific solutions (such as hormonal re-balancing) should be sought.

mantraa:
This has been found to be true so far according to particle accelerators on earth. However there are places in this universe were objects are known to be moving at faster than the speed of light. When an object enters a black hole its speed increases to faster than the speed of light, which is why its called a black hole of course.
Gravity is a force that can move matter faster than the speed of light and when we discover and can measure gravitational waves it will go a long way in helping us understand the relationship between gravity and space/time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_wave

Huge space based laser interferometers are being developed which can detect and help us understand this most common but very weak force. It could be similar to the breakthrough when michael farraday discovered the relationship between electricty and magnetism and all the associated equations leading to the devolopment of the electric motor, cathode ray tubes, etc etc.
For instance; we know it takes eight minutes(time) for light from the sun to travel the distance(space) to reach earth at the speed of light(c). Theoretically, it should be possible to transpose the equation. If you change the distance to 1m it may be possible to travel eight minutes in time at the speed of light. If we could understand and recreate the gravitaional forces at work in the centre of a black hole, just as it is possible to create magnetic forces using an electromagnet then maybe we can create an environment (a wormhole) where an object can travel back in time at the speed of light but stay in the same place.

Never say never wink
Brilliant! This is just brilliant!

Q: If man can travel back in time, will it be possible to change events in the past.

Because for me this seems absolutely insurmountable and even an inconguity: because if events in the past are changed, that will invariably change the present as well as the present is the direct product of the past.

Is it possible to alter the present by time travel? ? ? ?

And secondly: If someone travels to the past, where in space is he at that time?

Whatya think guys. . .

huxley:
OK, cool. Lets examine that definition;

1) Firstly, how did you come to know about this definition of God? And how do we, humans, know about the attributes of God?

2) What does "ultimate singularity" mean.

3) Did you mean "Beyond space and time"?

4) Is God within the universe and also without the universe?

5) Does God inter-act with the universe? If he does, by what mechanism?
1. I came about that definition of God by contemplating space & time, and reflecting on known principles of Causation, juxtaposing that with the concept of Eternity, and studying the interesting realities within the cosmos.

2. Ultimate Singularity meansthe unified convergence of all space and all time as one single essence.

3. Yes, i meant beyond space and time because a cause naturally stands outside its effect, although it may also be inherent in it.

4. Yes, therefore God, being the "ultimate singularity" is both beyond and within the universe: (thus the theory of omnipresence)

5. Naturally he must interact with the universe in the sense that light rays from a candle spring forth from the fire? The Universe, as you know, is pulsating with something called "Dark Energy" and this can only be vibrations from the sustaining power of the energy that caused the Universe.

So you see, these questions of yours are very simple indeed, yes?

wirinet:
It will be an interesting and intellectually stimulating thread, I pray i have enough time to contribute meaningfully as i have a lot on my hands now.

As a fore runner to the anticipated thread - No it is not possible to go back in time. This same line of thought was what Einstein grappled with and he wickedly placed a limit of c. He said nothing and i mean NOTHING  can travel faster than light, and the universe seems religiously to obey that commandment. Thereby effectively placing a ban on time travel.
@ Wirinet: Einstein observed the speed of light. We must agree that Einstein being mortal did not have the time to observe the speed of every other conceivable quatity in the universe. It has been proven that there are invisible energies and quantities which were not even known of in Einstein's lifetime. So please, let's not assume his work cannot be improved upon.

What if an energy is discovered that travels even faster than light?

Has it occured to you that If really extra-terrestials visit the earth, they may already have such a technology, because even at the speed of light it would take them millions or billions of years to traverse galaxies. . . whereas they seem to do so with ease and frequency. . . they must have something beyond that. . . just a thought o!

Let's have a short discourse on the most mysterious thing we all know.

TIME.

Time by its very nature seems to be eternal. And for this reason, questions related to Time have always disturbed thinking people: for the simple fact that it seems virtually incomprehensible.

Some people state that Space and Time were created by the Big Bang.

I am not sure that i subscribe to that, because there could be other universes out there, and we cannot suggest that "Time" would not apply to such Universes even before the Big Bang.

Whatever may be said about the nature of time, my concern within this thread is the possibility of time Travel.

Is it possible to travel into the past? Do the known laws of physics preclude this?

For example:

If you run from point-A to point-B and it takes you 1 minute. . . You double your speed and it takes you 30 seconds. . . you double your speed again and it takes you fifteen seconds, we carry on increasing speed up till the point where it takes you no measurable time to arrive at point B. On, and on we increase the speed untill we arrive at a point whereby you arrive at point B at the exact moment that you left point A. Then we increase the speed even more, and then we arrive at a point that you arrive at Point B 1 second before you left Point A. You have crossed the Time Barrier through speed, and you have traveled to the past.

If time travel is possible, would that affect all ideas of God, religion, spirituality, etc?

Any takers?

wirinet:
You had to ask!!!!. Anyway what was the universe expanding into? the answer goes beyond me. I am not an arrogant know it all Atheist, I know my limits. So scientitifically, I do not know.

But let me tell you what i know.

I know that objects in the universe (stars, galaxies and quasars) are racing away from each other, and from our point of reference, it looks as if our solar system is centric and the further an object is to us, the faster it seems to run away from us and also away from objects within its vicinity.  So that led scientist to conclude that the universe is inflating like a balloon, thereby giving the impression that all objects within the balloon are separating further and further with time. Therefore we can conclude that the universe must have been a little bit smaller today than it was yesterday, and the day before ad infinitum. So the conclusion goes that at a certain time in the past, the universe (all of energy- matter and space)must have been very small as to be called a point or singularity whereby further contraction is not possible. It is assumed this singularity must have been stable for eternity ( remember under those conditions time would not exist). Now something would then have triggered the singularity to become unstable, resulting in a rapid expansion - a bang often referred to as the big bang, thereby giving rise to time.

Now 20 seconds before the big bang is not possible because the conditions then in the universe makes time infinite or stand still. Time immediately after the big bang would be so distorted that (assuming we were there), it would be impossible to measure. Remember the Black hole, as we approach the singularity, time and space starts getting distorted, and at the centre of the black hole itself, time and space is said to cease to exist. So it would even be impossible to measure 20s or even 20mins after the big bank. This is the best explanation for the expanding universe we have today. If i find a better one i will embrace it .

Science have not been able to conceptualize a limitless space and time. Time is the most controversial and difficult quantity of the universe, because i often wonder what really is time.

Is time really the mechanical tick tock of a mechanical clock or time is a perception, perceived only by sentient beings. That is the topic for another day.
This is extremely interesting. I would like us to discuss, on a thread i will create for that purpose, the nature of TIME.

But as a teaser - Do you believe it is possible to go back in time.

Guys. . . what do you think. . . but dont really want to derail this thread, so i'll open one on this ASAP

Huxey - I have said it already, i repeat:

God is -

The uncaused cause, the ultimate singularity inherent in the uniform infinity of time and space, and beyond this, the primordial non-contingent "idea" of existence, bearing all the hallmarks of Intelligence and thereby presupposing a conscious entity.

You may, if you like, call it the mind of the universe, but i believe the universe to be finite, so it will be more apt to say: the mind of existence.
