@ House. Is there anyone familiar with Quebec terrain.I have just arrived here to join my wife and child and as much as I can say I like the big roads and the place I do not speak any French. Is there anyone with advices? I would greatly appreciate it. I'm happy to respect your privacy and boundaries, I just need hints on how to go about things here.My wife is full Quebecoise but speaks excellent English.I need advice on where to and not step and also find naija food.
Are you in Montreal or Quebec city? There is a Nigerian population in Quebec and a Nigerian restaurant in Montreal. Even though the province is bi-lingual, it is predominantly french. However, there are lots of english speaking folks around.

Just curious, e be like say you jam your wife by proxy or something; any vague backgrounds? Do you have to stay in Quebec?
AutosRe: Diesel Generator Or Petrol Generator by Delta007(m): 3:23pm On Jun 10, 2009
Again, it depends on your load. If you have a decent sized load (ACs, freezers, heaters, etc) running for an extended period of time, diesel is the way to go. Lighter loads, lesser run time, then "petrol".

I have been making my purchases from different sources abroad. This is now rather too expensive because of the weak purchasing power of the Naira.
Can someone please tell me where I can get VSAT equipments here locally. I need prodeline and andrew dishes, 1, 2, 3 and 4 Watts BUC, linkstar DVB-S2 modems, iDirect modems e.t.c.
This information will be appreciated. You can drop your response here for others too to benefit. Looking forward to seeing your posts
With the weaker purchasing power of the naira, everything jumps in price cos everything in Nigeria is imported. I do not necessarily subscribe to your logic but itmay well work out for you.

However, if you are in need of competitive pricing, shoot me an email sales@jonitivecomputers.com with a list of what you want and your budget, so we do not waste each other's time. I have direct links to Andrews, Blackbox, etc (N.America) and other telecoms manufacturers and I might be able to beat/meet your budget.

Owu Gal, Good luck with everything and hopefully you are contributing in your own little/big way to making this "toilet country" become even a much better one. Well, Bye!

To everyone else, tradeways is NOT cheap. Just slightly cheaper than UPS. I cant seem to get DHL rates anyhere and the Lagos number I have keeps ringing. I'm sold on UPS anyway.
I do not know what you are shipping but I ship regularly within Nigeria and I use the parcel services from the very reliable and established transport companies (Delta Line, Edo Line, Greener Line, Agofure etc). Fast and Reliable.

The VIN suggests it's an '02.

However, I doubt that's the original mileage. I find it hard to believe a 7yr old camry has only 80k (km/miles), if miles, might be a little believeable; Camrys are not luxury vehicles that u bring out only when the sun comes out, but then you get what you pay for, just my 2kobo!

gentlemen of the nairaland, i need serious help and i believe only you guys can advise me right.

i applied for my student permit to study in Canada on 19th April 2009. in support of my application among other documents was a letter from my office confirming that i have been given a study leave and i can come back to the job upon completing of my programme. however around March i commenced moves aimed at getting a new job, hoping in the event that i fail to get the visa i can change my job. unfortunately i am yet to get a feedback on my visa application but i have been offered employment in the new job. i am directed to resume on 26th May 2009 even though i can shift my resumption date for at most a week. the pay is almost thrice my current salary.

however i really want to go to Canada for my postgraduate study and i feel the chances of my getting a visa will be seriously affected if i leave my present job as the embassy people may subsequently try to confirm the authencity of my study leave letter and of cos my employer will tell them i am no longer in their employment.

this new job is also offers great financial improvement and if i refuse the job and i am subsequently denied a visa, i will feel seriously gutted. this is especially as i don't feel motivated and appreciated enough in my present job.

gentlemen, what do i do? accept the new job offer and jeopardise my visa application or deny the offer and hope my visa application will be successful.

please gentlemen i need help and fast too.
Does your new job know about your plans for Post graduate studies? Can you get a letter from them?

I'd take the job if I were you. When did you submit your application? Have you done medicals yet?

There are threads covering this info already - see https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-272024.0.html for some more reference.

The process is lengthy, but worth it if you're interested.

You will forward your initial application to the Accra office, with the basic forms filled out, but without all of the supplementary documents. Once your application is received, you will go on a waiting list for a period of 2-3 years, before the actual processing of your application will commence. At this point your supporting documents will be requested and then assessed. If you require an interview (not necessary for many applicants) you will need to attend one to clear up any issues with your documents and then if that is successful you will be sent forms to carry out the medical examination. This will be done at hospitals mostly in Lagos, with one at Yaba being a preferred one among a number of people I know. Once you have done that, the medical results will be forwarded to the processing centre and if all is well, you will receive a notification to send your passport for the Immigrant Visa to be inserted, which will enable you go to Canada to land.

The Accra visa office is like any other as far as I know - just send in your application and the processing will begin

The medicals are extensive - blood and urine tests, x-ray and a basic physical exam checking weight, height and inquiring about your medical history. You will not receive the results of the medical examination - they are sent directly to the processing centre. So in that regard, if you 'fail' (God forbid) you might not even be told why you fail. In my own experience, I remember doing my medicals (in Canada) but I had some question mark on my urine sample. The doctor called me back because they found a trace of protein so I had to give a second sample which was clear.

Regarding life in Canada, see the other threads for comments, particularly the thread linked by Dis Guy.

Life in Canada is generally ok. It is often cheaper than life in the US and is an interesting place to live in. Most immigrants end up in the major cities - Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. In recent years, more immigrants are ending up in Calgary/Edmonton in Alberta because of the oil boom there. Often times, it might be easier to get a job in some other smaller population provinces - Saskatchewan especially, which has many jobs at the moment. It all depends on what you want.

Right, I think I've written enough information - let me know what you need.
Debosky, the process has been overhauled and instead of the applicant submitting applications to Accra for the SW program, they are now required to send it to Sydney, NS for pre-screening. If they fall into the "required professions" category, then, the process is somewhat fast tracked.

BTW, I replied your mail with digits.

@ Saga

chill out bro 'Idea is need' is a colloquial saying in pidgin, not a grammatical error. grin

Having personal experience of Canada myself, I can say it will be nigh impossible to get jobs from here - unless of course you have a very unique set of skills that are highly desired. Even if you do have such skills, they would rather see you face to face before making any commitments.

Albertan living costs are relatively high for Canada - the oil boom raised prices and costs considerably over the past 5-7 years. My advice would be to 'land' in Ontario - initially and then gradually move westwards. Toronto and it's environs offer high quality of life and many opportunities to earn income while waiting to get into your ideal job. That said, if you have friends or contacts in Alberta, going there directly might just suit you better.

I do agree you should visit the site listed above - notcanada.com. Though it is clearly negatively biased, it does have some truths about difficulties faced by immigrants to Canada. This will help you in forming a balanced opinion of the country as a whole.
Seconded.

BOLLER AND DELTA007 HAS SAID IT ALL,

GUY DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY, IF NOT FOR URSELF, DO IT FOR UR CHILDREN AND GIVE THEM A SHOT IN LIFE .
U CAN RENEW UR PR EVERY 5 YRS!!
SINCE U R IN THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR U WILL DEFINITELY GET OIL AND GAS JOBS IN ALBERTA,NOVA SCOTIA OR NEW FOUNDLAND!, THERE R LOTS AND LOTS OF OIL AND GAS JOBS THERE, JUST GET UR CREDENTIALS CERTIFIED AND THE REST IS HISTORY, OR BETTER STILL U CAN HAVE A CHANGE OF CAREER LIKE BE A CONSULTANT IN SAP, THE THING IS CANADA'S EDUCATION SYSTEM IS RATED ONE OF THE BEST SO IT,S A GOOD PLACE TO DEVELOP URSELF AND THAT OF UR KIDS,
AND THE BEST OF IT IS THAT IT GIVES U DUAL CITIZENSHIP AND ACCESS TO OTHER COUNTRIES .
SO GO AHEAD AND MOVE AFTERALL U HAD TO WAIT FOR 5 YEARS!!!!, ITS because OF THAT WAIT THAT I DROP THE IDEA OF APPLYING 5 YRS AGO!!, SO ITS VERY REFRESHING TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE GETTING IT, CONGRATS!!!
Please, I never advised him to move. Infact, if I were in his shoes, I will NOT move; not at 42, with a family, a decent job, investments, probably a house with no mortgage, etc. I'd rather land with my family, check out the province of interest, make some solid contacts, plan to move my family on a later date (kids, depending on their age) and return to Nigeria to continue my life with my wife. You are not guaranteed a job (whether in oil and gas, etc) anywhere in Canada. It's not as easy as that. Just like Debosky posted, unless you have a unique skillset, it's quite difficult. As a professional (Engineer, doctor, dentist, nursing, etc ), you may be required to take exams that could take months to years, before you are certified to practice and unless you have a huge bank account to bankroll your family during this period, it may be tough and you may be forced to settle for odd jobs to cater for them. If in Nigeria, things become very rough, at least you have an option which you can fall back on (btween now and 5yrs time, when you are 47/48) bearing in mind that you have atleast "secured" the future of your kids with regards to education, healthcare, accessibility to basic amenities, etc.

BTW, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland does NOT offer lots of oil and gas jobs. I dunno where you get you info from but it's quite far from the truth; you are better off in Alberta but you may end up in the North pole of Forth Mac with no life, playing in the oil sands and cold.

@the poster, the choice is entirely yours. I'm not trying to discourage you but do not unestimate the transition (job, environment, lifestyle, weather, taxes, etc). It's huge especially at this stage in your life.

debosky, Kennis, Delta007 and all Nairalanders, Please i need this urgent favour from you all, I would be submitting a visiting application at the Canada embassy sometimes next week, I just wanted to know and verify some issuess if you have an idea, I am submitting the application based on going to attend a conference in Canada, I have been to France twice to attend other conferences within the past 9 months and i have also been to Ukraine before to attend a study program for 3 months and i have a permit of a Ukraine for a year as well which has just expired,

I just wanted to say in a whole that i dont have a virgin passport, But i just wanted to know if i stand a chance of getting the canada visa cos i am a final year student in an agric university and the conference is based on agriculture and i have my official invitation letter with me and my sponsor also just gave me the sponsorship bank statement with worth over 2million naira of company bank statement with a confirmation of his signatory,

Please,i need your candid advice on what other document i should add, I do not know if my personal bank statement would be required since i am a student and also i dont know what other documents to enclose,

Please nairalanders, anybody with useful advice can write back soonest, Thanks and God bless
Regardless of whichever passport you use, the onus is on you to prove that you will be returning to Nigeria after your conference. So you might need letters from your school stating you are a final year student, student ID and other documents to help with your proof. You may also want to clarify why it is important for you to attend the conference. Your itinerary (hotels, flight bookings, etc) should also be included.

Again read this thread to get a better idea of how things work and learn from other people's experiences!

Obeledu:
Hello All,

I am a man of 42years with 3 kids. I am currently working with Nigerian biggest Gas company as a contract staff and

on monthly salary of around 300K/month. There is no chance of being converted to staff position, but there is job

security and pension contribution by employer.

Before I got the job five years ago, i started this Canadian immigration process. I have lost interest in the whole

process then all of sudden they said my visa is ready.

I have some other investments in Nigeria.

Do I abandon all these and migrate to Canada to start afresh?
Depends on your profession, you can immigrate and make alot more than N300k a month. However, there are alot of factors that come into play here. Hence, with your age, family and investments in Nigeria, this is what I will do.

I'd "land" and make sure I get my permanent resident (PR) status and then return to Nigeria to continue my hustle. Truth is, you are probably better off in Nigeria. The PR status expires after 5yrs; you are eligible to renew it when it expires if you've been physically present in Canada for up to 2yrs. However, you wont need a Visa to Canada within those 5yrs if you want to go back and forth.

On the other hand, I may want to relocate my family (my kids especially, depending on their age). If they are in secondary school, public school is free in Canada. And if they go onto university, they pay Canadian fees. If they stay in Canada for 3yrs after landing and they become Canadian citizens carrying the Canadian passport and they dont need all this Visa wahala with the ultimate green passport. That way, you secure their future.

Congrats tho. I understand it's been a long wait. I just think it's too late to make that transition.

Goodluck with your decision.

This is exactly what I tell people. The way these people treat Nigerians/Africans is just appauling and it's a shame our govt cant stand up to them. It's true some Nigerians have made it difficult for genuine applications to easily go thru but still; I know of a simlar case couple years ago and the dude just flew to Austria and applied from there. No questions, no hassles, he got what he wanted. . .meanwhile in Lagos, they were giving him a very hard time.

@ igbo

did you apply for a visiting or student visa from the UK? Will be waiting for your reply.

Thanks

@ Kennis

CALL THEM or go to the office. Often times this type of rejection is to ferret out fake candidates. As long as you are sure of the veracity of your documents, go to the embassy as soon as possible and demand to see someone regarding you application. Waiting and waiting might lead to you not getting anything from them. GO THERE SOONEST.
I'm guessing Igbo applied for a visitor's visa. He'd need medicals and alot more change in his account to get a study visa.

I second your reply to Kennis.

@Debosky, I wan ask you something; can you send me your digits? Pls email me at

Like you were advised earlier, make the contact and get your admission deferred. If you do not hear from the embassy in a week or two, try again but this time, go with a new letter from your school with a new resumption date to update your file. Bottomline, you need to keep going at them.

You should be fine; however, you may want to state your intentions to clear any doubts; i.e. your accommodation, itinerary, e.tc. Include a RETURN ticket reservation print out. Also, dont forget to get a letter from your employer stating that you are empolyed and you'd be on vacation on the said dates. It would not hurt if they state how long you have been employed with them (especially if you have been with the coy for a relatively long period). The onus is on you to prove that you are just going for a visit/vacation and you do not intend to stay past your 3wks (as said) and also, you have the required funds to cover your trip.

Are you working? Where will you be staying when you come visit? In a hotel? How long is your trip? What's the purpose? Have you bought your ticket or do you intend to purchase the ticket from part of the N300k? I believe those are questions that the consul will need answers to determine if N300k is enough for your trip. There's really no minimum requirement.
Even though it is stated three months, it takes longer usually btw 4 -5 months to to process a student visa, if you have been following this thread you would have known this and submitted way earlier, your best bet will be to first call the embassy, you can look thrugh earlier posts where the no was listed , though at peak periods of the year i doubt you will get an answer from the visa section, your next bet is to go to the embassy in VI and fill an enquiry form but be sure to be armed with your DHLor UPS waybill no so that they can track your appl package.
Well dont panic, youll hear from them soon inviting you for a medical or interview, as for the school i advice you to defer the semester to fall or winter term, always start at the beginning not during the middle of the semester, classes here can not be easily crashed like those in 9ja, trust me, a few lectures missed and you are so lost!
Well, in any case,if the embassy approves your visa you will still have to get a new letter of admission with a new start date , so you'd rather start the process of getting a deferment from your school so that you can get the new letter and present it as soon as the embassy requests.
what is the name of your school and for which course were you offered admission?
I hope this answers your question, wishing u the best!
Good response!

You need to contact (visit is the better option) the embassy and get an answer from them asap!!!

Have you done your medicals? If they havent asked you to do your medicals yet, then there's no way in hell they are going to give you a Visa now or ask you to do your medicals since your program is resuming today. You are better off defering your admission. i.e. ask the school to give you a letter stating you can start in September and take it with you to the embassy to update your application.

Hi Highlanders,

I have really missed a lot from this kinda forum, i registered here some years back but did not know what usefulness it was until now, lol , i wish i could have followed this kinda tread, maybe my previous Visas wouldn't have been denied.

I have the same problem people are talking about on this issue, that is
1. I am not a bonafide student
2. I will not return to Nigeria.

I used a sponsor who was not so related to me the first time and also my dad but I was refused Visa, maybe cos the major sponsor wasn't related to me.

I changed my Passport from the old one to the new one (E-Passport) and re-applied, there was an issue on my previous passport, my date of birth was wrong on it (just the year) but i wasn't so concerned about that cos i think it means nothing and when i got the E-Passport, i had the date of birth changed to the correct one.

I re-applied with the E-Passport and did not include the old passport and i did not also state that i had applied before (sort of File Number) and i received a call bearly 2 weeks after submitting my application, someone telling me she's calling from CDHC and asking if i had another passport and i LIED i had non.

Days later, i got my package returned back to me, I was refused based on the two reasons above but they added one more, that they are not satisfied I have given true information which i know I haven't.

I want to re-apply now as my school is resuming in September but i had lost the Old Passport and am using the E-passport now.

Now i have some questions which I'll want the Nairalanders to please give me advice on.

1. What documents should I submit with the formal documents I've submitted previously?
2. Should I include a letter from a Lawyer telling them that I had an error with my date of birth on the formal passport and I had to change when the new E-passport is out or i should just write the letter by myself?
3. Since i have lost the old passport, will they believe it is lost?
4. What are the major things I'll submit to prove that I am a bonafide student and that I will be returning to Nigeria after the completion of my studies?

I hope i will have answers to this questions soon cos i will be submitting my application probably nxt week.

You may reply me here or email me at kolade5@yahoo.com.

Thanks Ya'll
You've made very poor decisions. I hope this will serve as a lesson to others. No matter how you many times you change your passport, your info is already logged and unless you make an entirely new application with a different information, different sponsor, different name, etc I'm sorry but you'd just be literally giving the embassy your money for nothing. You've been dishonest in your past application and I doubt they are going to forgive you for that. I'd advise you to look for another country if you are quite desperate to "study abroad". Good luck!

@hotstepper, Hi, Pls is it true that you can sponsor relatives on a highlyskilled visa?, Cos my younger sis and her fiancee applied from the uk in nov and got a reply 3weeks back asking them the young man to send some docs within the next 120days.She is the common law partner and both are sponsoring their relatives. What are they to expect and what is the most probable outcome.Thanks.
They were asked to send additional documents either because their application was incomplete or the additional document(s) is/are needed to prove a claim they made in their application. They need to send in the documents within the 120days or formally ask for an extension if they cannot mee the deadline otherwise, a decision may be made based on the "ïnsufficient" info they provided.

phantom:
@hotstep, When u apply through the highly skilled-pointsbased program, and you get a perm residency status, are your relations entitled to the same status i.e provided they were listed during formfilling.
The only relations that will be PR alongside the applicant, are those that were listed in the main application as accompanying the main applicant; i.e. the Spouse of the main applicant and dependent children (if any). Any other relation(s) listed in the application is simply for "background check" purposes. I hope this answers your question.

guys, really need help. want to apply as a student but cant afford the fees. I qualify for the federal skilled worker category now with 67 points (french at 6/cool. My course starts in january 2010 and here is my dilemma - i want to apply for canadian permanent residency now, hoping it will be processed before december and i will have my PR card; i will then go to canada and pay local fees. But if the permanent residence application is refused, then i will not be granted study permit as i have what they call "dual intent" and immigration intent - proving that i will come back to nigeria becomes difficult. so dear people of naira land, do you advise me to apply for the permanent residency now and take the risk, or to just muster enough money for the masters program.
Dual intent is allowed under Canadian immigration; however, I sincerely doubt that if you applied for PR today, you'd get it by December. I think your best bet is to apply for your study Visa, and then apply for your PR after you have been granted your Study Visa and relocated. That would mean you have to sort out your fees. On the other hand, you can apply for you PR and play the waiting game till you are finally approved (that's if). Note that getting the 67 points only qualifies you; it does not guarantee you.

FamilyRe: I Want To Leave My Husband For My First Love.pls I Need You Advise. by Delta007(m): 2:32am On Mar 19, 2009
@nj11, I feel your pain but I will sincerely advice you not to leave your marriage for your ex-boyfriend, at least not yet. Yeah, it's your decision but what if 2mths into the relationship, everything goes kaput? You go from very bad to pretty worse. However, if you are "well equipped", then feel free to make your decision regardless of your ex-boyfriend.
Being well equipped means you have the necessary tools to succeed in life (with your child; I'm sure you want to be a good mother). My guess is that you do not have a degree yet and probably do not work or have a decent job. How about you burn some time and at least get something from your marriage since you are currently in a stable albeit unhappy relationship? Your hubby is satisfying himself with a youngin; you might as well satisfy yourself by increasing your value/self worth; that's one thing no man can take away from you even if your husband or ex-bf kicks you out in the cold. I'd advice you to focus your "frustrated energy" in getting a degree and getting a good job. If at any point you feel you can self-support yourself without anyone's aid, then the decision is all yours. Remember, you are no longer the 18yr old teenager; you are a now a mother. It will be very risky to make a decision based on the words/feelings of a boy/man who has nothing to lose. All the best!
