Most admission seekers are often times left confused trying to get the reason they were not offered admission to the institution of their choice despite having a very high UTME score.

At times, having a high Post-UTME is not a guarantee for admission. The following are the reasons students may not be offered admission despite having a high post-UTME score.

1. Wrong UTME Subject Combination
This is one of the reasons a number of students lose admission despite beating the post-UTME cut-off point, this is very important to take note of.

Even at times, some students are being stripped of their admission or moved to another department during the process of first-year registration simply because of wrong JAMB subject combination.

For instance, a student seeking admission to study Mass Communication would definitely lose the admission if he or she did not take Literature-in-English as part of the four subjects for the UTME exam.

Similarly, a student seeking admission to study Physics and Electronics should definitely select Physics as part of his UTME subject combination. Before any student fills his or her JAMB form, he or she should painstakingly go through the JAMB Brochure to know the right subject combination for his or her course of study.



2. University’s Catchment Area
Most Federal Universities, including some State Universities, still retain the policy of Catchment area when selecting students for admission.

For instance, UNILAG catchment area constitutes majorly South Western states. What this means is that prospective students from the South West have higher chances of gaining admission than those from other part of the country.

For example, a prospective student from Osun state who scored 56, applying to study Sociology may be offered admission while another student from Imo state who scored 60 may not be offered admission.

This is so because if the catchment cut-off point for Osun is 56 while the general cut-off is 62, such a student from Imo state has definitely lost the admission despite having a higher score than his counterpart from the catchment zone.

In view of the above, admission seekers should always be aware of a university’s catchment area and requirements before selecting any university.



3. University Policy
Despite the general catchment area policy, some universities still have their individual policy they adopt as yardstick in admitting students.

Oftentimes, such policies are not made public. It is therefore the duty of admission seekers to find out specific admission policies of their prospective universities from friends schooling in such universities.



4. Low UTME Score
Often times, I pity most Jambites who score within the range of 180 and 210 because such scores limit their chances of gaining admission especially when there are enough students who scored as high as 250 and above. The chances of gaining Admission into such school will be very slim.

Well, most Universities still compute both UTTME and post-UTME scores in calculating the student’s average score. Hence, having a low UTME score can also hinder one’s opportunity of gaining admission.

It is always advisable for students to try to score 250 and above in order to be on a safer side. As a matter of fact, it is very necessary concerning the JAMB policy of redirecting students with lower UTME scores to less-competitive universities or giving them horrible courses to study.



5. O’level Result
I do advise admission seekers to pass ALL the necessary subjects in their O’level exam(s) very well before going ahead to take UTME exam.

I have met with lots of students who lost their admission because they did not have at least credit pass in some important subjects in their O’level result.

Recently, I met with a student who lost his admission to study Medicine at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye (OOU) because he did not have at least a credit pass in Mathematics in his O’level result.

In fact, I felt very sorry for him because gaining admission to study a competitive course such as medicine is not easy.

Though adultery is one of the cardinal sins in the ten commandments of the Christian Bible, there seems to be a relaxed view of it in modern times. O’star Eze looks at what the people think about its status in the Nigerian law and whether it should be criminalised.

The recent adultery saga involving Ifeanyi Azotani whose wife, Tochukwu, accompanied by her sister, Ogochukwu Nwankwo stripped his mistress, Ogochukwu Okafor naked, and flogged her while videoing and later allegedly uploading the act on the internet, as well as the resultant outcome came as an eye opener to many who did not know that except in northern Nigeria, the act of sleeping with another man’s wife or another woman’s husband is no issue in the eyes of the Nigerian law.

In fact, the three principal actors involved in the crime were paraded like common criminals and were charged to court, while the alleged adulterer walked away with her head held high.


According to sections 387 and 388 of the Nigerian Penal Act, 1960, adultery is an offence only in the northern part of Nigeria. It is not an offence in the western, eastern and southern parts of Nigeria. Hence, adultery as a crime in states in Northern Nigeria, is punishable with 2 years imprisonment and or with an option of fine. In the other parts of Nigeria, no person can be charged to court for adultery.

Incidentally, while adultery is not a crime in the eyes of the law, the Nigeria law still says that when intolerable adultery has been proven, it can provide ground for the dissolution of a marriage, according to section 15 (2) (b) and section 26 of the Nigerian Matrimonial Causes Act; Anagbado v. Anagbado.

Arguments against criminalising adultery in Nigeria
The argument in support of keeping adultery out of the law court holds that adultery law in application tends to be gender sensitive, victimizing the female in the act while the male co-perpetrator goes scot free. Dr Jennifer Mike of the American University of Nigeria captured it thus;
“Adultery laws in Nigeria have deep Puritan roots of historical underpinnings in colonial English Common Law as well as Islamic jurisprudence.

“In medieval and early modern Europe, women were executed for adultery as a form of deterring them from the act. Some were Agnese Visconti (in 1391) and Catherine Howard, wife of Henry the VIII, (in 1542), both decapitated for allegedly engaging in adultery.
“The sharia penal code in Nigeria also prescribes death as punishment for adultery. An example is the section 126 v 127 of the Sharia Penal Code of Zamfara State”.
She gave example of the case of Safiya Hussaini, a nursing mother, and divorcee, who was charged with adultery and sentenced to death by stoning in 2002. The man involved with her, however, was not found with enough evidence to be convicted.

Another woman, Amina Lawal from Katsina was charged with conceiving outside wedlock and sentenced to death, but the father of the child was released for lack of evidence to convict him.
Dr Mike said in the African society women become victims of social discriminations while the men are allowed to keep concubines. She said that while she does not support adultery, she thinks that the parties involved should be allowed to settle their matter in divorce courts.

“The counterfeit pleasures of an illicit affair can never compensate for the severe emotional distress it causes to parties, children, and the society at large. However, criminalizing adulterous acts goes against the spirit of the constitutional provisions that guarantee individuals the right to life and will have a more devastating effect.

“Alternatively, morality should be better defined, as an argument for maintaining the laws and should be adequately enforced. If the legislation is meant to deter adultery because at the moment the law is redundant in its very purpose,” she submitted.

Supporting Dr Mike, Barrister Mbazulike Amechi, a Nigerian legal practitioner and politician reiterated that adultery is more of a moral cum religious thing and should be left out of the criminal law system. His argument was that Nigeria has not adopted a state religion and “therefore bringing in things that will encumber our laws with religious injunctions could be harmful.”

On the premise that adultery leads to other crimes like battery and murder, Barrister Amechi said that there are several other factors that cause the listed crimes and that adultery is the least of the factors and should therefore be left alone by the legal system.
“Adultery is not the biggest issue before us. Why sensationalise it. How many crimes or homicides are direct results of adultery compared to alcohol, smoking and other similar factors? Moral codes could be interpreted in various ways depending on cultures and experiences. Could there then be legal adultery where one at the invitation of the couple engages in adultery with one of the spouses as in Igboland where people seek a male issue or in case of cultures where a woman marries a woman to maintain a bloodline and the duty falls on a married member of the family. The issue is better left as it is. You cannot codify it else you may kill the whole country,” he said.

Towing the same line, Barrister Daniel Nwafor, said that it is not the business of the law to enforce morality. He argued that given that adultery is sexual intercourse with consent between two persons out of whom one is married, the law should focus on more offensive acts and not moralities.

In his words, “criminalizing immorality will bring concussion because we would not know which sense of morality to adopt; should it be christians’, muslims’, hindus’ or traditional religion adherents’.”
Barrister Nwafor however advised that spouses who suffer indirect emotional damages as a result of adulterous act of their partners can sue for harbouring and enticement and obtain monetary damages against the person that enticed their wives or husbands as provided by the Law of Tort.

Citing sections 37 and 38 of 1999 constitution of Nigeria, another lawyer on the basis of anonymity opined that criminalizing adultery may infringe on the rights of traditionalists whose religion permits them to keep more than one wife, adding that monogamy is a foreign concept in most African cultures and that some cultures even endorse what is considered adulterous practices.

Tita Nze, a veteran journalist, in the same vein, said that even though he is a Christian, he does not think that the legal system should recognize the commandment; thou shall not commit adultery, given that the act is usually consensual. He alleged that even the Igbo culture accepts multiple relationships as long as it is not under duress.

“Iko and agiri (both terms that refer to a socially recognized extramarital affair in ancient Igbo culture) was well accepted by the Igbo society,” he said.
He said that morally speaking some persons who indulge in adultery may be doing good to their individual families given that in some homes, the man may not be able to perform sexually again or be able to fend for their family and the woman would need to seek help from outside the home.

“Some husbands cannot perform again and their wives engage in adultery thereby secretly helping the family not to scatter. Some couples cannot bear children due to health challenges or other factors and they therefore engage in adultery in other to get children and thereby save face,” Nze said.

Argument for criminalising adultery

However, the Anambra State chapter chairman of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Moses Ezedebego has a divergent view from the popular. He argued that given that the law recognizes homosexuality as a crime, it would be hypocritical not to do the same with adultery which offends the spouses of the persons who engage in the act.
Arguing further, Bishop Ezedebego said, “if tampering with another person’s property without the person’s consent is considered a crime by the law, it should recognize adultery, which has to do with tampering with another person’s spouse.”

Conclusion

It appears that the popular stance among Nigerians is that adultery should not be criminalized given that attempts to do so in the past and in northern Nigeria had only succeeded in victimizing only the womenfolk found guilty of committing the act. However the general consensus is that not criminalizing adultery does not justify the act as it still remains a moral crime condemned by the Christian and Muslim scriptures and has been a predominant factor that has led to the dissolution of marriages in Nigeria as well as several homicide cases reported on the media.

The identity of the Nigerian lady who was killed in Italy over sex performance, has been revealed. The deceased identified as Blessing Benedicta Daniels but popularly known as Anita, a Nigerian sex worker in Italy, was murdered Leopoldo Scalici, 40, for failing to satisfy him.

According to Italian website, Modena Today, Scalici approached Benedicta on the streets of Modena Nord for sex over the weekend. He loaded her on board the van on which he was travelling to reach a secluded place where they were believed to have had sex.

Benedicta was reportedly killed after the duo had had sexual intercourse and an argument had broken out, which led to Scalici hitting the Nigerian prostitute with a heavy object on the face and head.

It was however speculated that Scalici hit Benedicta because he wasn’t satisfied sexually.

Italian police have detained Scalici, after he voluntarily confessed to the crime.

A lady identified as Damilola, is currently battling for her life after being beaten to coma by a boy identified as Samuel, on her birthday at a hotel in Lagos.

According to reports, Damilola and her friends had gone to Lavalon Hotels, Ajah, to celebrate her birthday, when she decided to take some pictures.

While this was on, Samuel’s girlfriend, Mama Gold, started mocking her through the window of the room she was lodged, making the celebrant to approach her to ask why, since they’ve never met before.

However, Samuel stepped in to defend his girlfriend and started assaulting Damilola and her sister. At a point, he landed a heavy blow on her head and she passed out immediately.

The lover boy was later apprehended and handed over to the police, but he allegedly bribed them and he is now back on the streets, while Damilola remains in critical condition in the hospital.

Governor Aminu Masari who spoke to the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muhammed Adamu, told him that bandits have taken over some parts of Katsina he governs. The Katsina State Governor who said his government has met with the eight front-line local government chairmen to keep them abreast and will do whatever possible to see to the final onslaught on the bandits and kidnappers in the state, said the IGP was coming in a period of anxiety and apprehension.

According to him, Katsina State has supported and will continue to support the ongoing ‘Operation Puff Adder’ with funds, logistics and accommodation. He announced a donation of 12 vans to the police.The state's deputy Governor Mannir Yakubu, who spoke on behalf of Governor Masari, said the bandits have taken parts of Katsina in meeting and also strike and destroy properties at will.

Prince Tony Momoh, a former Minister of Information and one of the national leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in this interview with TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI , speaks on the controversy surrounding power shift, former CJN Walter Onnoghen’s resignation and other issues. Excerpts:

The general impression that the presidency will come to the South after the completion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2023, but right now some Northern political leaders are threatening to field candidates, saying the South should forget . What is your take on this?

Politics is a talkshop. The armoury in the dictionary of politics is word. The only thing is that communication has rules. For instance, communication in a love letter should be different from communication that is published in national newspapers. I believe that there should be time for everything. We just finished a general election about a month ago and people are already talking about irrelevant things when we ought to be dealing with more pressing issues that will grow the country. Having said that, power is not served a la carte; you struggle to acquire power. There is no way anybody can beg anybody or any region to come and take power. So, it is a struggle and any part of the country can struggle to occupy any position in the country. Wining election is decided by votes, so if some people sit down and think people will say ‘come and take these positions in 2023, then they don’t know what democracy is all about. Politics is like a game of chess and those who are good players win. When PDP zoned positions, a lot of people from the North and South contested. I remembered when the PDP presidency ticket was zoned to the South, some people in the North contested.

Even look at the APC now which has zoned the position of Senate President to the North- East but some people from other regions are protesting, saying that they have a right to occupy the position. So, if anybody thinks that the Presidency will be zoned to the South in 2023 and then the North will just sit down and watch, then they have a lot of shocks coming for them. We can still find another person from another zone who may contest under another political party and win. So, nobody should think that they can just sit down at home, not work hard and then power will just be handed over to them like that.

But don’t you think the rotational policy between the North and South should be strictly adhered to so that there won’t be any political crisis?

Although that is what people think, it will not be that smooth. It has never been that smooth. When they said the PDP presidential ticket should come to the South- West to pacify the people in the region, did other people from other regions not contest? We had people like the late Alex Ekwueme from the South- East and the late Abubakar Rimi from the North who contested against Olusegun Obasanjo. I believe in 2023, a lot of people will come out to contest for Presidency and nobody will stop them. So, people must work hard to get power and the prayer for winning election is answered by votes; the volume of votes you can produce.

Now that he has resigned, should former CJN, Walter Onnoghen be prosecuted?

Prosecution is a political decision. I have said it before that all Onnoghen would have done to save everybody the embarrassment of being suspended by stepping down. Now that he has resigned, what happens next is a political decision.

Are you saying the Federal Government can decide whether to prosecute him or not?

It depends on what the issues are. What are the issues? Did he plead guilty to misconduct? The Attorney-General is very powerful. He can withdraw a case at any time, he can take over a case at any time and he can institute a case at any time. The power to prosecute is there and that is why I said prosecution in any matter of this nature is a political decision.

Given the proliferation of political parties in the country as witnessed in the just concluded elections, some Nigerians are suggesting a return to the two-party system like we had in the 1993 elections. Are you r perspective on this?

What happened with the SDP and NRC during the time of IBB was an attempt to reduce the proliferation of parties in our political life and you know that a committee was set up and they had all the entries grouped into ‘a little to the left’ and ‘a little to the right’. So, we had the SDP and the NRC, and when we began preparations for a return to civil rule in 1999, a lot of people said, no, that the SDP and NRC were government parastatals. But the fact is, what people didn’t know is that as at the time Abacha dissolved those parties, they had taken over the ownership of their party because after the annulment of the June 12 elections, meetings were being called and SDP that produced Abiola was deciding to or not to attend meetings because they were already in charge of their party. So, if we had allowed the NRC and SDP to grow with all the structures already in place at the local, state and national levels, they would have grown into institutions that would have stabilised our democracy.

But what happened after 1999 was that we had a situation whereby the power of INEC to register was being questioned, and Obasanjo messed up the whole system by asking INEC to register as many parties as possible, most of which were initiated by the PDP. So, we had this situation where we had so many political parties, and as at the last count, we had 91 in the system, and it is not as if they are tired. More parties would spring up because we must look at what we have made of politics in Nigeria and you are a political association until you are registered as a political party. You cannot do business as a political association.

You can only do business when you are registered as a political party. We have made politics a business and political parties are the vehicles for those businesses while Nigerians are ruthless businessmen. In business, there must be a gain. We are not going to have a reduction in parties; we are going to have more. So, we have a challenge which is to ensure that politics becomes what it should be. In other realms, it is service, not a business. As long as we continue to see it as a business in Nigeria, we are going to handle political parties as we handle selling pepper or sugar or even 419.

We must decongest the political space. If we don’t do that, we will continue to have the outcome of what we have now and even vote buying will increase because again if the National Assembly is, and then you decongest the political space, reduce the power at the centre, move them to the States, then cancel local government elections and reduce it to part-time if you must have them, you will see overnight how we will cure these ills because these are businesses. Nigerians are ruthless businessmen and women, and it will continue to be business as usual.

Ochuwa Momoh George, a mother of four who recently completed her Ph.D from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) became an internet sensation few days after accounting her journey which was crowned with a CGPA of 5.0.

Ochuwa took to Facebook to share her post graduate doctoral success story and many were inspired.

She wrote: “Finally, Ph.D done….I am so glad to announce that I have successfully completed my Ph.D in Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Management with a cgpa of 5.0/5.0! This journey has indeed been challenging…. amidst the ASUU strike extending this program for almost 2 sessions, the turbulent waters at one of my study locations in the Lagos lagoon that almost submerged the speed boat during one of my field trips, a full time job and 4 active sons….. Sometimes I wondered how I managed to scale through.
