mcvities: Ogbonnaya Ikokwu, Umuahia
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State , Mr Ene Okon , has warned policemen in the state to desist from criminal activities , stressing that the number of officers involved in crime in Aba , the commercial hub of the state , was alarming.
The CP gave this warning during his familiarisation tour with members of the Police Community Relations Committee in Aba , on Tuesday.
He urged the officers to eschew indiscipline in its entirety and embrace the tenets of policing in the state . Okon , who said he wanted to return policing to members of the Aba community , also urged residents to always fulfil their own obligations to the police by volunteering appropriate and timely information about suspected criminals as well as being obedient to the law.
He said , “I have a problem with policemen in Aba . The number of policemen that are involved in criminal activities in Aba is alarming.
“Every policeman in Abia wants to be posted to Aba . My question is, to do what ? Does it mean police work cannot be done at Arochukwu , Ohafia , Nkporo, Isuikwuato and Uzuakoli? Why must it be Aba?
“The bottom line is bribery. For those , who have corruption tendencies and come to Aba to destroy the image of the police, I urge you to get ready because it will not work again.
“I don’ t know whether you are not ashamed that you as policemen are involved in crime all because of pocket money . I will not spare you.
“Those that have worked with me know my stand on these dirty and corrupt practices. I know the Nigerian society and , especially the Igbo. If you do your work diligently, they will appreciate you.
“Not when you go and extort money from somebody unjustly , how can you expect something good in your life?”
Okon wandered how someone employed to fight crime could turn to a criminal himself, pointing out that there was a problem in the system.
“You may not be happy, but I ’ ve told you the truth and that is it. I’ ll always tell you the truth no matter who is involved , ” he added.
On the members of the community , he said , “For the members of the public, it is true you own the police and assignus to protect you and your property. So , it is your right to get that , but mind you that you have an obligation.
“You cannot separate right from obligation here . We know you have your right , but back it up with your obligations . You must obey the law , assist and support this institution you have created to serve you.
“If you fail to obey the law , this police you created will turn against you . Police are not magicians . We need your information to function adequately . We cannot be everywhere. ”

LazyGold: Since Africa’s first Nobel Prize for Literature winner, Professor Wole Soyinka, blazed the trail in 1986 by taking home that prestigious prize, the seed sown has spawned several other acorns scattered all over the land.
Nigerian writers in different genres of literature have been persistently pushing the limits of creative writing.
Ben Okri, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nnedi Okorafor and several other young writers from Nigeria have shown through their works that another Nobel Prize may just be around the bend.
Asiyanbi is the writer and the brain behind the story of ‘Chief Daddy’ that was filmed by Niyi Akinmolayan and produced by EbonyLife Film.
He won his third award in play-writing from BBC International Play-writing Competition shortly after the cinema release of ‘Chief Daddy.’
The trained Biochemist and graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, ended 2018 on a high by winning the Georgi Markov prize for the most promising script, in the BBC International Play-writing Competition.
EbonyLive TV’s premiere of ‘Chief Daddy’ drew over 40 movie stars.
The BBC play-writing prize is in honour of the BBC World Service journalist and writer, Georgi Markov, who championed freedom of creative expression.
According to the BBC, Bode’s interest in writing grew after he was selected as one of the winners in the now defunct BBC African Performance radio drama series.
In 2005, he won the BBC Africa Performance Play-writing competition with the play ‘Big Dialed, and his radio play, ‘Shattered’ won the 2011 BBC African performance play-writing competition.
Born in Osogbo, Osun State, Bode Asiyanbi studied at the Obafemi Awololwo University and Lancaster University, United Kingdom.
He was for many years writer and editor for BBC Media Action on its groundbreaking radio and television drama series, Story Story and Wetin Dey, as well as for the ‘Save the Children’ developmental documentary.
He presently works with various M-Net African Magic’s comedy and drama series as a writer and story editor.
His plays have also been broadcast on the BBC World Service.
Asiyanbi’s short stories have appeared in Munyori Literary Journal, Kalahari Review, Wobbled Words Anthology, and Per Contra.
His stage play ‘Shattered’ was performed at the 2013 British Council Lagos Theatre Festival, and his short story, ‘The Diagnosis’ was a winning entry for the British Council Lagos Theatre Festival 2014.
His poems also featured in the anthology of contemporary African poetry, ‘A Thousand Voices Rising’.
Asiyanbi’s plays ‘The Wait’ and ‘One Chance!’ won the British Council LTF 2016 and 2017 Playwriting Prize, and his poems also featured in the anthology of contemporary African poetry, A Thousand Voices Rising.
Bode describes himself as “a wandering troubadour from a long line of village weavers and palace bards; spinning coloured yarns, seeking out lost songs and singing them out from rooftops.”
He is interested in exploring trauma, identity and the place of memory in history.

Politics › Re: Railway: Amaechi Accuses Chinese Firm Of Breaching Contract by DerideGull(m): 11:00pm On Apr 30, 2019 |
Omooba77: Nigeria is to take delivery of 10 additional coaches that will be deployed on the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan rail lines.
It was gathered that the coaches were meant to arrive in Nigeria from China by June this year and they are part of the 64 coaches being manufactured for Nigerian rail lines by the Chinese Railway Rolling stock Corporation.
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who disclosed this when he led a delegation to China to inspect the pace of work at the CRRC, also stated that the Chinese corporation had failed to meet the contract delivery date as agreed.
He was quoted in a statement issued on Monday by the Federal Ministry of Transportation as saying, “We need the coaches by June latest. We need coaches that can carry men from one point to another and we need a minimum of 10 coaches now out of the 64. I requested for 10 coaches now because we need to improve on the Kaduna-Abuja line.
“If the 10 (coaches) don’t come, there is nothing I can do but they have to come because they have to manufacture for us to use in Kaduna-Abuja and again Lagos-Ibadan, which will soon be ready. We also have to ensure that we get coaches that we can use pending when they finish the construction of the 64 coaches.”
Amaechi said the pace of work was slow and urged the manufacturers to improve on it, adding that the contract had expired.
He said, “The pace of construction is slow and they need to improve on it. In fact, the contract has expired; we may not have paid all the money but we paid quite a substantial sum and, therefore, they should construct speedily.
“The contract was signed in December 2017 and was supposed to expire in February 2019. The time has expired and there is a breach of contract but we will look at what the law says because more than one third of the money has been paid.”
The minister, however, pointed out that the issue was not with CRRC but a contract between Nigeria and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, adding that the matter would be addressed in Nigeria.
The General Manager, CRRC, Zhou Junnian, explained that the passenger coach components were 100 per cent from China and materials for the works depended on the speed of the product and the customer’s requirements.
He noted that in future, CRRC would work with the CCECC to meet the high standard and quality needed to finish the projects.
Amaechi also visited the CRRC Shandong facility to inspect the cargo wagons being built for Nigeria, where he disclosed that there was a verbal agreement with the CCECC to localise the railway industry in Nigeria which was supposed to produce 15 per cent of the coaches, locomotives and wagons.
The minister said, “We had a verbal agreement for them to produce 15 per cent of the coaches, locomotives and wagons. They came back and said it was too expensive to establish locomotives and coaches factory and that we can start with the wagon and do 100 per cent assembly in Nigeria for the first five years. After the first five years, they will now build a factory that will manufacture wagons in Nigeria.
“It is not part of the contract we signed in 2017 but I insisted that for me to sign, they must localise it to create more jobs and reduce the expenditure of foreign exchange. Instead of going to buy dollars, you pay the Chinese in their local currency.
“We have to go further to ask them if we can own it. We have not talked about ownership but what we said was localise it. Although they are using their profit to build it, you can make them hand over the ownership to Nigeria. As for the assembly plant, I intended for Zaria but they chose Kajola in Ogun state.”
Amaechi further directed the Nigerian Railway Corporation to provide land for the wagon factory to CCECC before May 8, 2019.
https://punchng.com/railway-amaechi-accuses-chinese-firm-of-breaching-contract/amp/ Amaechi do you remember there is also a rail line from Kaduna to Makurdi/Enugu/Port Harcourt? Some fools do not understand why certain people in Nigeria call for disintegration. |
