Chairman of Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited, Dr. Bolanle Babalakin has blamed the inability of Nigerian banks to provide funds as a major reason why work on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project is being delayed.

He also gave what he described as ‘politics’ as another reason.

“There’s nobody who wants to give out money. This road was given to Nigerian banks to finance; Nigerian banks don’t have a long-term contract. We were holding meetings upon meetings, but you discover that all they can give is money for a year or two years, and what you need is money for 15 years”, he said over the weekend while on a visit to the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye.

He added, however, that a bank in South Africa has shown interest and that the road would now be built with a consortium of firms in South Africa.

“We’ll in 10 days time start patching the road, later we’ll commence the proper work. Patching is a waste of time and money, because the road has failed from under. Anything you put on top of it is always temporary. It is money down the drain. But we assure Nigerians, we’ll lay three lanes going to Sagamu, three lanes coming back; we’ll repair Sagamu to Ibadan, we’ll then come back and start rebuilding, so that at every stage of our construction, there’ll be two lanes for motorists, while we are working on the third lane”, he said

He mentioned some of the challenges his firm was facing as including those of information and ignorance.

He said, “The most difficult thing I’ve faced in life was to explain issues to powerful mediocre. Chief Obasanjo said there was even a worse type - those who deliberately refuse to understand.

@ekt_bear d guys name is Mustapha Bello very cunning man,do u know that he had over 70 graduates in his employ as contract staff but sent their names as full staff to AGF?when salaries r paid he gives them barely 20k n pocket d rest,smiling 2d bank wit over 10million?ask any body they wil tell u,yet no staff wants 2 report 4 fear of being sacked 1 of d igbo guys who tried 2 report was sacked he no hold water as contract staff.

There is your proof. He went from being a scientist- to an accountant, and then a theologian. I am not discrediting him, obviously if he got into Oxford (albeit to study Theology)  and became a director at Goldman Sachs, he's got something. Unfortunately, he failed to grasp the workings of the Nigerian economy which cost him the portfolio in the end.

LSBU dissapointed my friend. He completed his masters there and back to Lagos he came searching for work. After over 3 yrs in banking and some dough in your hands, bros it will be my last advice that you go and wish away your savings to Oyibo for worthless paper called certificate.

I share your profession and am also an engineer by qualification but I have my hands in so many businesses that I have relegated this banking job to mere routine. I do not know whether you are in marketing or operations. Marketers generally have more time than Operators. If you are an operator, you could move to marketing and become a business man. It gives joy to know that you can do without the job. [b]You better start planning on how to settle down by marrying [/b]as I bet you are not younger than 29-30.
