I'm not an economist but my understanding of current account balance obtained from Wikipedia is the sum of the balance of trade (exports minus imports of goods and services), net factor income (such as interest and dividends) and net transfer payments (such as foreign aid). This, I don't think, is a suitable measure for how well a country is weathering the financial crisis. The 2006 figures (http://www.photius.com/rankings/economy/current_account_balance_2006_0.html) show a similar trend and the global crises wasn't upon us then. We didn't fare better, I believe we fared worse and are still being worse off.

Most of this teacher are packed with inferiority complex, take the cane away and you will see most of them burst into tears right in front of this untamed beasts . . . . . No, I'm not advocating for child abuse but children need firm boundaries and if its spanking within reason then so be it. Here in the UK, the government is regretting all these 'rights' that have been given to pupils and are looking to pass a bill that will give schools some power to discipline pupils with some sort of reasonable force.  We're quick to copy the West! Why? We're totally different from them. The demography is different. There are different races hence it made sense to outlaw it in the West. Just imagine what would happen when a white teacher clots a black pupil. There will be outcry of racism and  if and do you honestly think a white parent will accept an African flogging thief wards?  

There is complete breakdown down in the moral fibre of the UK society and the is clearly evident in the spate of murders especially amongst black kids. Kids killing kids. Why? Because their parents aren't allowed to discipline them. Sad! Even some white gloat about is saying its good because that way, the blacks would eliminate themselves. What shame! I'm going to rest my fingers now and these are entirely my own personal opinion by the way. Cheers.

Long overdue. The way kids are caned is appalling. I went to schools in which caning was not allowed. i feel that caning should be applied in small amounts and with less force and not for all situations. I feel so sad at how kids are beat up all in d name of discipline. With all these caning, how come Nigeria is such an indisciplined country? We need military and police to flog us b4 we maintain queues. People always want to rush and be in front.

Very timely from Fashola. Maybe we will see the nd of people breaking canes on children's backs, blinding them, rubbing pepper/salt into their wounds and other forms of torture. That being said, the parents should be the ones to cane their kids if they do wrong but just a little bit, not too much.

A 36-year-old cancer patient received the organ a month ago at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.

The process involved scientists at University College London, who were given three-dimensional scans of the windpipe of Andemariam Teklesenbet Beyene, a geology student from Eritrea with an inoperable, cancerous tumour that was obstructing his breathing.

They created a glass mould of the windpipe and his two main bronchial tubes, which was then coated in a polymer containing millions of tiny holes.

It was flown to Sweden where it was “seeded” with stem cells from Mr Beyene’s bone marrow and placed in a bioreactor for two days to allow the cells to take root. Further cells were taken from his nose to line the windpipe.

Prof Paolo Macchiarini, a Spanish surgeon, carried out the 12-hour transplant operation. He praised the construction technique, which meant that “custom-made” windpipes could be produced within a week.

Nigeria has postponed the launch of its two satellites scheduled for July 7, due to logistics and technical reasons, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) announced on Tuesday.

Felix Ale, NASRDA’s head of media and corporate affairs, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He stressed that the delay was a common phenomenon in the satellite business, adding that other space-faring nations like Nigeria have had a similar experience.

“The delay is not from our end, it is due to logistics and technical reasons on the part of our launcher, because this is a critical stage of the whole exercise.

“We are in a critical stage when it comes to launch side. They want to do everything humanly possible to ensure that all issues are adequately addressed to ensure a successful launch.

“So, if there is a need for them to delay the launch, we cannot query them. I believe that it is in our own interest towards the successful launch of the satellites and I can assure you that before the end of the month, the satellite would be launched,” Mr Ale said.

He explained that the delay would also affect the launch of other satellites owned by other countries which were to have been launched alongside NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X.

Mr Ale gave assurance that the agency remained committed to working with its technical partners for the successful launch of the satellites.

NAN recalls that NASRDA director-general, Seidu Mohammed, had earlier announced that both satellites would be launched on July 7 at 8am Nigerian time.
