There's indeed a collective lack of common sense or even a general deficiency in logical thinking amongst some of our leaders. The other day, the president said that each state lacking a tertiary institution, would have one during his 1st term in office - as if it would solve the comatose state of higher eduction in the country. What about the already-existing Universities? What programs does he have to ensure that they're better standardised and reflect 21st century higher education instead of merely increasing the number of institutions? How would this airport be viable economically? Bayelsa state is not even a commercial/business state. What about ensuring economically viable airports such as Enugu's or Asaba's renovation and development are sped-up. If he intends to spend money in Bayelsa, surely he should come up with better projects which are beneficial to the state's populace.
did he really say that?  shocked

which drama wan happen ? Ajimobi is better than any other candidate and even the reports state that his supporters were in the majority, so what else are we talking about ? undecided
toba1909:
I wonder o!
Ajimobi is more vibrant than any of the 7 aspirants, moreover he has majority of the the supporters in the party. I believe the party leadership will settle this amicably to prevent a reprisal of what happened in 2007 general elections.
so why not just go ahead with the voting then?

Nigerians are smart and a bit

Politics › Re: How Come Most Nigerian Politicians Aren't Good Public Speakers? by DisGuy: 11:20pm On Jan 14, 2011
Atreides:
A politician is a leader. He should be able to speak standard English. Being a good public speaker isn't just about using fancy words or big grammar. It's about connecting with the people you're speaking to and inspiring them. We should not use the fact that English is not our native language as an excuse for mediocrity. Every student is taught English in schools. Even if that's not sufficient for them, they can hire people to whip them into shape. They should be able to speak standard English, shikena. Things will never change in Nigeria until we Nigerians stop accepting mediocrity.
another thing you'll notice is that they rarely understand what they are reading, if they miss a line in their speech the are lost, some don't even look up from the notepad they read from, i doubt some of them understand some words used in their prepared speech.
Totally agree on the connecting with the people part, the speech don't have anything personal, its totally abstract from their audience, many people just play with their phones or fiddle with their pen until they are prompted to clap.
Gordon brown wasnt excellent but he could connect with the people, he knows what he is talking about. our politicians just recruit some first clas graduate to write for them, unfortunately they cant convey the message

Travel › Re: Travelling To Canada by DisGuy(mod): 5:54pm On Jan 14, 2011
I think the first thing he should consider is to

1) get a list of the course(s) he is interested in

2) get a list of universities that offer the course(s)

3) search for their requirements and if possible contact their admissions department via phone or email

Arlington:
Hello Dis guy/Debosky/ Delta007
Please I need some information/ help ASAP . I am trying to get my younger brother into Canada for schooling. He has applied to the USA where i live for visitation a while ago and was denied.
I don't want him going back there for schooling and they think it is a scam and just a way for him to enter the USA and he gets rejected .
He is currently at LASU studying part time which is just a waste of time , he had some issues with Jamb in the past so that made him stay at home for a while  before getting this part time study.
He is 25 years old, I am my husband will be his sponsor,My question is where do we start from ?

Will he have to write any exam like TOEFL? Where is usually the best place for him to look for schools in Canada that is not ridiculously expensive and neither a mushroom university Ontario or Alberta?
What are the cost's like? Does he have to pay a whole year in advance? From what i am reading here he will have to apply for the fall. Will be be better for me to apply for the school for him and they send me all the documents  in the USA and i send them to him, or him receiving them in Nigeria is better. What are the advantages of using an Agent, and are there any good ones that can be trusted and what do they charge?

when does he have to apply to the university and go for an interview  since he wants to start in the fall. what kind of balance should i have in my account, will $15,000  be sufficient?
Thank you in advance i know it is a lot of questions but i just want to get it right and the main contributors on here seem to know what they are doing.
Sorry I'm not too knowledgeable about Canadian student applications but these are some info i found online; hopefully others will chip in soon ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT JUST GOT THEIR VISA WITH HELP FROM THIS BOARD

Cost of Studying & Living in Canada

Studying in Canada is not free, but when compared to other western countries, it is very affordable. The overall cost for an international student to study in Canada depends on the student's own needs and 'lifestyle'. Each university has a different tuition level and each city has different living costs. Generally, though, it is estimated that students from abroad would need between CDN $15,000 and CDN $26,000, depending on their school and program.

B. Academic Studies (College/University)
Colleges and universities in Canada have a range of different tuition costs, depending on the program and the school that are chosen. For example, applied programs such as engineering and medical sciences are generally more expensive than non-applied studies. However, colleges are generally less costly compared to universities. Average academic tuition fees are as follows:

• College: CDN $9,000 – CDN $12,000 (per year)
• University Transfer Program (UTP): CDN $9,000 – CDN $12,000 (per year)
• University Foundations Program: CDN $9,000 – CDN $11,000 (per year)
• University: CDN $10,000 – CDN $16,000 (per year)

A little bit of both. A leader is supposed to be able to inspire the public by his/her words. Our political leaders make me sleep when they speak.

More opinions are welcome still.

LOL @bold

It'd have been easier to allow the wife and mother go (especially since the brother has once gone) but they'll need a male, a mahram to accompany them.

Btw, in your story above, why should the mother feel that taking the wife to hajj was spending extra? undecided
well you know how this mother in laws are like sometimes, though I think she was in the process of getting a house/flat and the son wasn't prioritizing that

Something similar happend this year, my uncle went with his wife and his dad, though his mother was against him spending the extra to take his wife which i dont understand, to me the dad is very old, not too healthy and has gone before!! some naija families sef

anyway, the man should take his mother then his wife will go some other time (buy her a ticket to Dubai to go shopping instead) grin

Or Allow his mother and Wife go he will go next time around

I think the Saudi authorities should enforce the ban on people going too often

Because of facilities, student to teacher ratio, and close supervison of student and teacher performance, the private schools in Nigeria are better than the public ones (GENERALLY). This is evident when one looks at jsce and waec scores. Like some have already said, schools like Thomas Adewunmi college, Adesoye College, and St. Jude's in festac are some of
people keep talking about waec scores of these schools as if its readily available information, any school can claim to High scores in public exams especially when they are not verifiable, just like many politicians in nigeria claim to be student union president back in their school days cheesy PLUS most schools can actually just teach their students to pass waec a bitl ike student studying to pass I.T exams wink

So the title of this thread should be changed, right?

thinking out loud

First people were clamouring against the PDP in Kwara

Some were against a female leader- the state was described as backwards

So now, if you vote against Gbemi Saraki, you are being backwards

If you vote for PDP are you also endorsing PDP and maybe Saraki jnr

if you dont vote for PDP Saraki Snr will Win

Commissioner: Planning and Economic Development is the PDP candidate
