TravelRe: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by DisGuy(mod): 8:45pm On May 07, 2013
miz Gene: Hi everybody,gd evening.
I have a an offer for an Msc in Birmingham...I hv checked out d skl accomodation and also private ones.seems to me like havn to choose btwn the devil and the deep blue sea. I'll give my 'eye tooth' to have an ensuite room of course bt these cost approximately 5k pounds!! Private mostly ranges arnd 320 to 400 per mth..minus bills oo.

So my question is: is it really worth staying in private considering u'll be the 1 to pay water, gas, internet, electricity bills and council tax? Also consider transport expenses and d fact that one wud probably have less security and/or insurance..
What do u tink?
that'll be a decision you'll have to make unfortunately

you'll be sharing the bills remember and some are inclusive
FamilyRe: Kneeling Down To Greet Mother-in-law: Oddity Or Obeisance? by DisGuy: 2:12pm On May 07, 2013
coldgate: Hi,

I need clarification on this aspect of yoruba culture. When a daughter-in-law goes on her knees to greet a mother-in-law,
when is she expected to get up? Is a wife expected to kneel untill asked to rise? I am from an entirely different part of Nigeria where we only courtesy to show respect. Should the wife feel slighted when her actions are barely acknowledged? How should she proceed? Thank you!
no, especially as the in law is from another part of the country, no biggie, you either kneel and greet up or kneel until shes acknowledge, don't read meanings into everything, she might just be greeting some other people as well or doing other things

i know some people kneel to greet their elders whilst on the phone 6000 miles away grin

firetrap: The plane didn't run out of fuel. Its suspected to have been shot down by BH. During the Baga offensive the security forces made some startling discovery that the BH animals were in possession of AA(anti aircraft) guns
What are you on about?

According to the press release, it crashed in Niger during Mali operations

RIP

anyone know their names?>

Why don't they ever release names/pictures of men that die on duty for this country?

uboma: why do u choose to disturb urself over something u and i have no power to change? If at the point of application for job in any organisation and u are asked to provide the above details, u can choose to ignore and do as u like. I wonder why some people cant follow simple instructions, especially when such instructions are not detrimental to anyone.
i know i know, just disturbing that it wont go away, i see it so often

anyway I'll carry on...of course you don't have to reply

it might not be detrimental to anyone but a suitable qualified applicant would be worried when the HR department of a supposedly 'centre of excellence' inquire about 'place of birth' 'state of origin; or 'local government'

We can actually do something about it- the reason why 15 copies of CV, place of birth, marital status are still be asked like they taught those HR managers 30years ago; is that not enough people questioned the rationale behind such petty/silly questions especially as they have absolutely no bearings on applicants' competencies

uboma: some organisations have welfare packages for an employee's dependants. This and other reasons which u and i may not have privy to, explains why they ask such personal questions.
this should be after the interviews not before- the employee will make decisions about his/her dependants welfare

and place of birth, state of origin nko? would the employees be made to prove they were born or from a particular LG?

CrimeRe: Naomi Oni Searched About Acid Attacks Before Her Injuries by DisGuy: 1:45pm On May 06, 2013
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-22350772

A woman has been charged over an acid attack on a 21-year-old in east London.

Naomi Oni had acid thrown in her face after getting off a bus in Lodge Avenue, Dagenham, in the early hours of 30 December.

She was on her way home from her job at a Victoria's Secret store in Westfield, Stratford, when she was attacked.

Mary Konye, 21, has been charged with throwing or casting a corrosive fluid with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable or do grievous bodily harm.

Ms Konye, of Throckmorton Road, Canning Town, will appear before Redbridge Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Damaris Lakin, CPS London Senior Crown Prosecutor, said: "I have authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Mary Konye in relation to the throwing of sulphuric acid on to Naomi Oni on 30 December 2012 in Dagenham.

"I concluded that there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and that it is in the public interest to charge Ms Konye with throwing or casting a corrosive fluid with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable or do grievous bodily harm."

This girl is golden. I think she has quality. See a crowd of, maybe, grooms sisters, or cousins, or friends moving down to this poor house to marry her. No opposition. Igbo ladies have quality. Kudos sweetheart. it's character and worth. Some ladies i know who never moved close to Cotonou will be more British than Margret Thatcher. See a true daughter drawing down a full house of white ladies to her father's poor village house. This lady is a gold.
I understand this automatically qualifies him to be an Igwe/king grin

sowu: Thanks @justwise but d main question is can I mention dat I ve a business I run in my application but now I don't seems to get u,are u saying dat I should not mention dat I ve any business in my application, but any chance of getting visa with my emplyer's recommendation letter, letter of emploment, leave letter,I'd card,my savings account with 700k,letter of promotion.money available for my trip is 1000pounds,cost to me personally of my stay in d Uk is 400pounds,am only paying for my tkt and 400pounds for my upkeep in uk,mind u my host in UK is responsible for my feeding and accomodation,d trip is just 2weeks holiday. Any chance??

I also ve other means of income which I ve d document for it,I receive monthly maintenance income from my sister in america via western union and I ve d western union receipt with me(170dolars every month but at times more)

Any chance pls
sowu: @justwise Yes I make profit and am also married
The more document of your business the better, if you are making profit from your business and its reflecting in the account you'll be submitting, its better to declare it as part of ties to the country, check with the local tax office if you can get anything, you might also want to mention your role in the business cant it survive without your presence

I don't know if the 'maintenance money' is reflecting directly in your account but you might want to give that a miss
-married man, with a job, land and profitable business + monthly maintenance= Holiday undecided

make an itinerary of your holiday and cost breakdown
