Health › Re: Kidney Transplant In Nigeria: My Story by drnoel: 2:07pm On Apr 15, 2016
diagro:
I was a kidney donor in a Nigerian hospital in late 2015. That gave me opportunity to interact with a couple of kidney patients, doctors (including non-Nigerians) and other donors locally. I have been thinking of sharing some of my experiences regarding this, but I have been forgetting until recently when someone was telling me about a kidney patient he knows and some problems he was having about getting help in Nigeria. So, I believe my experiences might benefit someone out here who may be having a challenge in this direction. Then, coincidentally, I just came across a passage of This Day Newspaper uploaded only 2 days ago saying Nigeria records 17,000 new cases of kidney diseases annually.

We can reduce this with more information. For example, my friend who called me was talking of the difficulty in getting a donor (he actually called me to speak to a prospective donor who was apprehensive of undergoing the surgery, being that I have passed through it). So, if you have a loved one who needed your help in this regard, you can take some points here. The point is, even if you don't have money to give, there is something better than money you can give without really losing anything.

So, talking about my experiences let me say the much I can here: I donated to a dear one. Before that, I underwent intensive medical check-up, long orientation and then, documentation. The first set of the medical check-up was to ensure that I matched with my receiver (blood group and all); the second set was to determine I was healthy enough to donate. The orientation was to ensure my decision to donate was informed. Then, the documentation included court affidavit and personal data filing.

On the day of the surgery, I was placed on anesthesia during which I lost consciousness completely (not even a dream!) until later I saw myself after the surgery had taken place (about 8 hours or so, later). For me, that was some idea about how death would be eventually.
Before the surgery, I was asked not to eat for some hours prior to it. Then after it, I did not eat anything for 24 hours (may be more) but I didn’t feel hungry because I was often placed on drip. I was in the hospital for post-surgery medication for two weeks before I left.
During the experience, I learnt so many things I could never have learnt unless I passed through it such as: 1. Pain-reliever consumption predisposes you to kidney problems. Of course, it gets to be risky only through over-consumption. So, stop taking paracetamol or panadol at every opportunity you have to. 2. It is not just anyone that could donate a kidney to anyone. Apart from matching the blood groups of prospective donor and receiver, there are a ton of other considerations 3. As the medics told me, it hardly ever happens that one kidney would have problems without the other having. So, you don’t have to live carelessly thinking ‘if I lose one, the other continues’. Also, if you donate to a loved one, you have saved a life without losing any of yours.
One thing I noticed after donating the kidney is that I have naturally become less careless in the way I live. For example, I naturally (without struggles) gave up smoking and heavy consumption of alcohol. These habits are equally as dangerous to a one-kigneyed as to a two-kidneyed person though (from the above expert views, that is).
There is nothing I could do before the kidney donation I can’t do now.
This is all I can say for now. NOTE: I’m not a doctor and so, this can’t be taken for medical advice. All I know about this is from being a donor.
I think its time I rise out of my cave and say this. Not everyone can give a looked one an organ and not everyone could have such courage. Its really not the end of the world as the OP said but then again the donors should be aware that the decision has to be theirs as tgey would have to leave with the one kidney and not two. So no potential donor should feel pressured into giving, its ur organ so its ur right to say give it or not.

Gave mine in 2008 and still dont regret the decision. As a medical personnel I would add this. Its not rare for both kidneys to fail but its is also not rare for only one ofbthe kidneys to have a problem. The thing there is that if its a problem that needs dialysis and then.Transplantation then both kidneys would have failed.

Good news, I am sure some peeps in NL will start having stimach ache. Make in pain them wella. But I am worried about d security of such flight. Using a 737 for such distance in this time and age. Its not a matter of if it could do it but if its feasible. Then again am reliably informed that Enugu may have been upgraded to international standard it does not have the infrastructure to compete with Lagos and Abuja. Am told its runway is meant for local and not international. Pls anyone care to clarify me?

My biggest problem with you nigerians is that you guys forget too fast and let deja vu repeat itself times again.
To add to what I said b4, if not how can a dullard like Bubu be leading you peeps now as president. Thats a clear case of deja vu. I mean I thought the fulanis are specialized herdsmen leading cows and goats but for one to be leading a whole country, what does that make you guys?

But thats the problems. If every constituency try to take this kind of move. Do u know what the budget would cost? What he did was plain day thievery, what baffles me is how his colleagues where there seeing him stealing us blindly and didnt object till sahara reporters gave their numbers.

Then again this kind of mentality by the owner of this post is what is killing nigeria and nigerians. Imagine this man here I quoted not knowing the difference between what is right and wrong. With thoughts of this nature our generation is in trouble. We are talking about a budget built on borrowed moneys and one person decided to send 40b to his constituency. WTF, he should be impeached and removed straight.

LocalChamp:
Senators fear Gender Equality Bill will turn women to prostitutes, lesbians –Senator Abaribe

April 13, 2016 Samuel Ogundipe

The senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Eyinnaya Abaribe, has said the Senate rejected the Gender Equal Opportunities Bill because some lawmakers feared the legislation could give women unfettered freedom to engage in immoral activities.

Mr. Abaribe said many senators expressed deep concerns over the blanket freedom the bill would give women because many of them would ignore their immediate responsibilities and turn to prostitutes and homosexuals, urging the proponents of the bill to find a way of replacing some of its languages.

Mr. Abaribe spoke during a forum on political rights of women in Nigeria organised by the Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC) on Wednesday in Abuja.

“The bill was defeated at the second reading when its details were highlighted to the senators,” Mr. Abaribe said. “Some lawmakers started expressing deep worries about some parts of the bill that they think could give women too much freedom and lead them to prostitution, lesbianism and other social vices.”
Mr. Abaribe called on all those championing the bill to make efforts at modifying some aspects of it in order to make it acceptable to all lawmakers for passage.
“The reason why we’re here is that we think that we should be able to restrategise, we should be able to look at the bill again and see those contentious areas we may need to modify. We should be able to find those critical constituencies within the senate that we must have to address.

“We should be able to look at the narrative of the bill and how it is being presented to the public and change that narrative and make it a positive narrative.
“For example, the bill is not a north versus south bill. The bill is not a Christian versus Muslim bill. The bill is not a male versus female bill. The bill simply seeks to extend to every Nigerian all the rights that are they should enjoy. And if women by virtue of our culture, by virtue of our historic antecedents are being behind, then we need to also drag them into the economy by giving them every right that they can use to be productive members of the society and that is all that we’re trying to do.
“It has been rejected but we’re talking to the senators who are supporting the bill to know how we could move forward. It’s not easy to say the bill can pass tomorrow, but we will continue to plead with other members for their support on this bill.
Mr. Abaribe, who is a member of the Senate Constitutional Review Committee, also said the bill may need to be incorporated into the Constitution as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process in the National Assembly.
“Since we’re doing constitutional review, I will advise that we find a way of putting this bill directly into the Constitution because if we just make it as part of electoral law, it could be challenged at the courts and get struck down.”
The bill, which has continued to stoke widespread emotions amongst women, was introduced by Senator Biodun Olujimi and it aimed to achieve, among other purposes, equal access to education, strengthening of the laws on violence against Women, ending abduction of girls, sustenance and promotion of entrepreneurship opportunities, gender mainstreaming and gender equality, as well as female participation in governance.

Of all the most silly excuse ever given in this world. This can only happen when our senators and law makers are illiterates more ignorant that the people they are supposedly making laws for.

Two things I'd love someone to shine light on are;

1. Why did the constitution give budget presentation rights to the executive & still reposed the powers to re-assign, cut, add, remove in short rewrite to suit the NASS whims & caprices at the same time.?

2. Whose function is more germane i.e who has more authority over a particular budget item defense/inclusion/exclusion (not on funding grounds, just on viability or priority grounds), Is it the Oversight committee of that particular MDA or the appropriation committee of the whole house...

Matured & rancour free engagement would be very nice. Thank you.

Mynd44, Lasticlala ... Good morning...
To answer both question senate and appropriation committee.

The senate can move this silly budget into law if they unanimously agree that the budget is okay the way it is once the number of days required for the presidents signature has elapsed.

pendusky:
If you are approaching a T junction, the traffic already on the road you are joining has right of way. This means any traffic on the road ending at the junction must wait for the other traffic to pass before turning left or right.

So

If you are at a junction where the roads are of equal importance, the traffic on your right has right of way.

In this case 2 is driving forward, thats right no 1. and 3 is on right of car 1. this means

2 will go first followed by 3 and then 1 which is coming from a minor road.

so I go with

2-3-1
Not really as u said. What u said only applies on roads without road signs. Once the road sign os placed on a road the right of way is lifted and only the instructions on the road sign matters.

This is an example of missplaced priority...why build a lagos to calabar rail when even 20% of that money can be used to build a world class port in calabar and port harcourt..who want to travel from lag to calabar on a train....or of what do you hope to bring into calabar from lagos that cannot be brought in through the sea.
The yoruba oligarchy have decided to ensure that the south south never get a port so that people will not leave lagos and the innefectual buffon after 6yrs in power could not even build one port in his home region.
The only way for igbos to leave lagos is to build a port in the south south, complete the onitsha inland port and all industries in lagos will move with it and lagos shall cease to be no mans land and go back to the binis or yorubas and it will join the degeneracy of the rest of the waste..

What of stuffs coming from calabar to lagos? I ask you this, why cant we have both port and rail?

Pls for those that read upside down, the catholic church does not say but the conference of bishops recommends and tries to understand the reason why couples would cohabit without being married. This is a break through revolutionary stance of the conference of bishops who have always being to rigid to change.

Because men have an ego issue and getting rejected hurts their confidence.

In their mind, everytime they see the girl that rejected them, they remember only the rejection, and nothing else. So, to compensate for this when they get rejected, they pretend that the other person isn't there or pretend that they never were interested in them as a way to "save face." You'll find this is especially true when they are around other males. It's strictly an issue of ego. By "forcing themselves to dislike you", it helps them..
Like ur moniker says so are ur words. When u want to say something pls dont generalize.
Not all men go brooding just cos of rejection. I have been rejected move times that I can count. Infact the fastest rejection I have had happened in 5 seconds but thats a story for another time. Funny enof I always happen to remain on talking terms with them biatches.
One of them I pursued the longest which was just for 7 days and she kept refusing wanted to turn me intp her maga. I just laff am tell am make she go find alhaji as me sef no be alfa.
When a guy knows his self worth he would also know that their are many fishes in the river and that the fact that one catfish beat you is no reason not to eat fish pepper soup. A guy does not have to be proud to hold his head high.

I lost my first job because I have just one picture and 150 friends on Facebook. They said I was fake that it's not possible for one to have an active account with one picture and few friends.
Looks like nigerian recruiters are silly, imagine rubbish statement they told u.
A friend of a friend told me how he went to this interview and was asked what his facebook account was. He imagined how he was going to tell them the name of his account which was something like "ogbolobo olodo". Instead he told them he didnt have an account. They asked him for his twitter, reddit, naiaraland id and again he had silly names for those accounts so he told them he does not use any social media as he finds them unserious and artificial. Now this guy is an social media veteran and is very active on nairaland.
They employed him. Having or not having a social media account is in many cases not part of a job description. Another friend of mine who is a recruiter for firms told me once that they ask for social media ids so that they can research on the applicant. See ur level of seriousness outside work and use that to build an idea about you. That you dont have one would not in most cases prevent u getting the job, I mean unless the job description requires that you have one.

Great nairalanders, i know you people are exceptional in giving good advice to people because i have been following this tread for some time. Though i am new.
i am suspecting that my lovely wife is cheating on me. The reason is that, each time i want to go through her phone, she picks up a fight. Whenever i want to use it for something else, that would be the time she will want to use it. I feel she is hiding something from me but i really want to get an evidence so that i could confront her. Most of the time when she is chatting with someone on phone, she hides the conversation. i wonder why?
Pls great nairalanders, what do i do in this situation? I don't want to confront her yet because i don't hv a proof.
Please no insult. Thank you
If u have a strong conviction that she is then install a spynet software on her fone and connect it to ur own fone. U should be able to read all her messages, follow her calls and follow her also via GPS. You will get ur proof then. Dont thak me yet till u also secretly uninstall the spy software. But God forgive you if she finds out cos she will most definitely ask for divorce.
