Politics › Re: Portfolios: How Buhari Shocked Some Ministers by drnoel: 7:48am On Nov 12, 2015 |
kahal29: President Muhammadu Buhari did not assign key portfolios to some ministers following security reports, it was learnt yesterday.
He placed priority on expertise and performance in assigning portfolios to ministers, sources told The Nation.
The President was also said to have disappointed some of those who lobbied for “strategic” ministries.
Ministers may be placed under watch and anyone who gets into trouble will be dropped, it was learnt.
All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday urged them to be creative.
According to sources, until the inauguration time, the list of portfolios was known to only Buhari and members of his “kitchen cabinet”.
The list was kept under wraps in such a tidy manner that even the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the President’s aides were unaware.
Six factors, which informed the assignment of portfolios, were security reports, less exposure to politics, priority on expertise and performance, ongoing investigations of some appointees and distaste for lobbying and media profiling by some appointees ; and Buhari’s military background which sent signal to ministers that no one is assured of any position in his cabinet.
Investigation revealed that after the nomination and confirmation of the ministers, Buhari still asked relevant agencies to conduct a more discreet investigation of the would-be ministers.
The outcome of the “surveillance” was presented to the President and his kitchen cabinet in deciding the choice of portfolios.
A source, who spoke in confidence last night, said: “Most of us, including the ministers themselves, were shocked when the portfolios were announced. In fact, some ministers were just unstable. The President and his inner cabinet kept the list secret. They didn’t allow it to leak at all.
“If the portfolios had been made available to any other office or desk, we would have known. So, the President used his military background to send the first message to the ministers that he has no favourite and they should always expect surprises.
“From the way the President assigned portfolios, nothing is settled on any minister. If anybody gets into trouble, he will not spare him or her.”
The source also spoke on security reports on the ministers as accounting for the outlook of the portfolios.
The source added: “There were reports that a minister had already formed a power cult around himself, such that those expected to serve under him had been paying obeisance.
“Another minister was holding discussions with some foreign partners based on assumption that a particular ministry had been conceded to him.
“Some ministers were openly telling friends, associates, party leaders and even key aides to the President that they will be in charge of some ministries.
“With security apparatchik and communication advantage, you know the President has access to more information than anyone else. He picked some of these information and decided to surprise these ministers.
“ He detested that some ministers had air around themselves that some ministries are their birthright.”
Responding to a question, the source said: “You cannot rule out the fact that there are some ministers who did not get what they would have thought to be commensurate portfolios. But that is the working of the government for you.”
The source added that security reports made the President to concede some portfolios to a few ministers – to challenge their competence.
Ministers with surprising portfolios following last-minute decisions by the kitchen cabinet include Adamu Adamu(Education); Adebayo Shittu(Communications); Usani Usani(Niger Delta Affairs); Monsur Dan-Ali(Defence); Geoffrey Onyeama(Foreign Affairs); and Cladius Daramola (Minister of State for Niger Delta), who was said to have been billed for the Education ministry.
Another source also indicated that the President applied expertise and performance target in allotting portfolios to some ministers.
These yardsticks were said to have accounted for the portfolios of Kemi Adeosun (Finance), Babatunde Fashola (Power, Works and Housing), Audu Ogbeh (Agriculture and Rural Development); Abubakar Malami (Kebbi); Suleiman Adamu (Water Resources); Ibe Kachikwu (Petroleum Resources); Udo Udoma (Budget and National Planning); Prof. Isaac Adewole (Health); Amina Mohammed (Environment); Dr.Osagie Ehanire (Health); Lai Mohammed (Information); and Rotimi Amaechi, Hadi Sirika (Transportation)
The second source added: “The thinking of the President is that most of those in this group, with the exception of Amaechi, have no political ambition in the nearest future. They are mostly experts who can deliver on the key areas of governance which can make the change he promised to the nation a reality. What Amaechi has going for him is vitality or energy to serve and knack for quality projects.
“With these experts manning vital ministries, there will be less pressure on them from politicians and hangers on. Their assignments alone will preoccupy them.
“So, their portfolios were based on a performance driven target.
A government source also claimed that some of the ongoing investigations of some ministers and the attitude of some and lobbying by some contributed to the nature of the portfolios given to them.
“For instance, there are two or three ministers with issues. A few others sent emissaries and some erroneously confided in a few people close to the President that they will be in charge of some ministries.
“The President decided to prove them wrong completely.”
Asked to describe the atmosphere after the portfolios were announced, the top government official simply said: “Some ministers were certainly weak.”

Politics › Re: Buhari's Big Ministerial Appointment Mistake by drnoel: 3:06pm On Nov 11, 2015*. Modified: 7:14am On Nov 12, 2015 |
Lordave: With the history of poor, erratic and unsteady power supply associated with past governments, even Maitama residents would be anticipating the APC trademark 'Change' to sweep across the ministry of power and somehow or anyhow solve the problem of nonexistent power supply in most parts of the country. Alas, Buhari, today decided to name former Lagos State governor, Mr Raji Babatunde Fashola as the minister of merged former Ministries of Power, Works and Housing. From a progressive perspective every sensible Nigerian would agree that this is a very big mistake from our president. The ministry of Work and Housing alone is a deserving ministry for a person of Fashola's calibre and administrative prowess to pilot, likewise Power. Heading the Ministry of Works and Housing in Nigeria is very cumbersome and almost equivalent to the numerous tasks he faced as the Governor of Lagos State were he had commissioners who were accountable to him, let alone Power being added to this workload of a Portfolio. I'm tempted to ask, did Buhari seek advice and make proper consultation before handing these merged portfolio to Mr Fashola? If he did, what were his findings? Which people supported his merging of these ministries?(they should be named so we can know those who indirectly oppose our progress) In a nutshell, it was unexpected, unprogressive, nonsensical and most especially, unacceptable merging of this work laden ministries and handing it over to one man considering the immediate change Nigerians are expecting in the power sector. Buhari should separate this ministries and make Mr Fashola a minister to one of them.
It would be inevitable hearing APC faithfuls say, "after all it is merged ministry, and as such presents a herculean task to the government in bringing a reasonable level of change to what we had in the previous administrations who are responsible for the majority of ruins in the ministries.
WE DO NOT WANT EXCUSES! did u not hear that there would be no ministry of power as such. So no one expects fashola to do much in power since most of the work will be done by TCN and ist parastatals |

Bubewilson: Do your research more compare and contrast old and current facts before ridiculing them.
Here's what I found on Wikipedia Biafra, officially the Republic of Biafra, was a secessionist state in south eastern Nigeria that existed from 30 May 1967 to 15 January 1970, taking its name from the Bight of Biafra (the Atlantic bay to its south).[2] The inhabitants were mostly the Igbo people who led the secession due to economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions among the various peoples of Nigeria. The creation of the new state that was pushing for recognition was among the causes of the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Nigerian-Biafran War. wiki can be edited by any Tom, dick and Harry. I can remove that definition on wiki and come and tell u I have removed it and wiki will erase it as Long as I give then a suitable reason why I think it should be removed. |

arabianights: Was in the bulk room of a first generation bank and crowd was quite bad ( yet they say no money ).There were some igbo men that had come to deposit quite an amount of money and had been conversing loudly in their dialect not caring that they were been a nuisance. All of a sudden a white man comes in and the teller receives his cash whilst ignoring the hisses and insults of customers.
The igbo men, trust them started insulting the man and went ahead to add more in their dialect, the white man then, calmly turnsto them and responded to them in IGBO language then went on to add a few more sentences... the whole bulk room kept shut out of shock of course.I turned to him in amazement to ask him on how he learnt igbo and he smiled and responded to me fluently in HAUSA.
Apparently, he had been there before every one else but the account number was wrong and he was told he couldnt make calls in the banking hall, he then went out to make a call and wait for the right account number. On his return,hE went straight to the teller as she had assured him that when he returned ,he wouldnt have to join the queue again. The teller should have explained to all instead of ignoring customers.
Any way my point is that these white men are smatter than us, they learn our languages so as to enable themselves settle in and do business whilst most of us go to their countries and come back the same people we were when we left if not worse. the White man acted just like any sane Person would that doesnt make him smarter than anyone in the bank,....em maybe it makes him smarter than u but definitely not smarter than anyother Person in that bank |

Bbsharon: Hello Nairalanders,
Am kind of new here and I decided to share this to learn from all, be it just sharing your own view or experience if you have had any or just advising base on what you know too.
Three years ago I met a guy, handsome, working class, well educated. He was 27 years then and I was 19 years and not yet in higher institution, he told me he loves me and he wanted a relationship with me of which after some time too I started developing interest in him too and so the relationship kicked off after few months.
He was my kind of guy tall, dark and handsome, Godfearing, intelligent and also from my state. We were happy together until I started feeling insecure because he never introduced me to neither of his parent nor friends nor any relative at all, while I was busy flaunting the relationship and he won't agree to come visit me at my place too, i kept telling my siblings my bf is not in town, he said because his last relationship he did that and the outcome wasn't good because the girl later broke up with him and he was heartbroken so was being careful.
I tried believing at first but with time I couldn't trust myself to feel he is not hiding some things from me, so i confronted him and told him at least ur best friend and am okay with it and I asked him questions like is it cos am not yet in school? besides as at that time have written jamb and was waiting for the admission list to be out.
He told me he loved beyond all that but still no one can hear about our relationship...at that moment I knew something was wrong and my insecurity wont let me trust him again so I decided to end the relationship there.
It was painful to me at the time but I tell you it was one of the best decisions I made...and to my surprise he didn't come begging back like I read in romance books and that hurts the more but that made me forget about him faster than I wanted and I moved on.
Fastforward to 2 years later this same guy started stalking me everywhere telling me how he loves me so much and that he is serious that he wants me to marry him, promising heaven and earth.
At this time have moved on and I was already in school, well I told him I was no longer interested and I dont love him again, he left me for some time and then started stalking me back this year again.
So when I was home for holiday I decided to see him and then he told me how he is now engaged to a lady he just met this year too and they have done their introduction but he doesn't love her and he still loves me and if I say yes to him he will call of the wedding and marry me.
It was strange to see that same guy that was always bossy around me begging me but I just told him I wont be the cause of another woman's sorrow by him breaking up with his fiancee.
Now he is ready to introduce me to even his ancestors, and treat me like a lady but unfortunately I stopped loving him long time ago.
Now he stalks me everywhere and am fed up already.
so ladies have you been in this kind of situation before and guys too? what's your best advice on this?
Meaningful contribution pls. Every word u wrote, every single sentence you constructed showed us how old u are. Pls go and read you books and leave romance to adults. |

naijacutee: It's funny how one thing in one country means completely something different in another country. In Europe, rich people are more health-conscious, and usually cycle (there's no fear of being robbed because no rich person carries cash around) to keep fit. My bike isn't that expensive at £400 but I had to pay for it over a 12-month period, when compared with these Scott Foil Carbon Bikes which you have to pre-order for next year and pay £9,000 for. And they come WITHOUT PEDALS! http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Scott-Foil-Premium-2016-Road-Bike_83766.htm?sku=275943&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=AdwordsProductAds&utm_campaign=Adwords&gclid=CIef-bKH8cgCFQs6GwodH2sOlg# right to say certain things mean different things in different countries but in Nigeria its definitely another issue. The silliness of the situation in Nigeria, the useless flexing and fronting that many Nigerians in Nigeria are known for and the idiotic idea of trying to prove affluence when they dont have it, is a sickness in our country and until that sickness is eradicated many Nigerians in Nigeria will never see beyond their noses when it comes to things like this. I will give u a simple example. This example is though not related to the subject in question but its a good example to use. I returned to lagos after a long time of not being home. My female cousin came to collect me at the ariport with her golf 3. We encountered the usual lagos hold up and had to drive a long time. One could see how people with nicer cars where acting. One particularly blocked us in his bead to collect my cousin´s number (I didn´t know how desperate most Nigerian men are when they she a fine face or 4 skirts). He didn´t even care if she was my sister, wife or cousin or the fact that we were on a major road and in the middle of it. I had to question that man asking him if it´s cos he was driving a lexus jeep was why he had just confidence or that she hadened 4ked in years was why he was acting like a he-goat. I was so pissed off. Then my sister imagine is we were both riding bicycles back then? I myself ride to work when I don´t feel like driving. I ride like 30-40 minutes to get to my work place. Also my bicycle costs just about same as urs. I have a Trek Bicycle. Its going to take completely changing the mentality of most nigerians before anything about bicycle can be taken seriously. |

ALl these recruiters and their wahala. I once heard a headhunter ask me to my surprise "if the company I recruit for decides to take you what would you bring to the table"? I looked stupefied at the woman and answered her something very silly (Pls job seekers don´t do this in you interview). I said "If my work experience and my wealth of knowledge in that area does not speak for itself then nothing would. Then I added "Its not just about what I can bring to the table but also what the company is prepared to offer me to bring out my potential and remove any misgivings I may have to give my best to the job". U can imagine the shock on her face. I didnt relent there, I asked her "are we done". When she said yes, I politely thanked her and walked out thinking that was it and that I would have to wait for another interview. They didnt waste time, cos their Director called me a few days later and told me "I heard your brash reply to our personnel manager. If you want to visit us for 3 days let us see you working style we would be happy to offer you a place". I agreed. Went there, worked with them and am sill with them these last few years.
Funny enof I met that lady again and I laughingly greeted her. After talking for sometime she sheepishly asked me why I replied what I did at my interview. I replied "from experience and from so many interviews I know recruiters have already decided who they want to take before the intervew. What changes their mind is not just the candiates performace but also how the candidiate presents him/herself. I told her I was sure I had gotten the job but just wanted a mediaum to show what I knew and that question was not such a medium". |
