The gentleman marketing US made Castrol on this thread gives a new meaning to the phrase "hard sell". grin. I like his style. grin

I committed the mortal sin of using Nigerian sold Castrol oil (the label stated it was EU manufactured but that was a whole new controversy on its own) and saying so publicly. Because of this I got into a long winded and completely unnecessary debate with another poster on another oil thread. In the rash of recent oil threads on NL, the major selling point of a number of US spec oils is that they are synthetic AND they also meet the viscosity requirements of most of the imported (new and used) cars sold in Nigeria today. But are these US oils really synthetic?

My limited research shows that US oil manufacturers are able to label their oils as synthetic only as a result of a court ruling arising from a trade dispute between Mobil and Castrol (Castrol again! angry) and not because they developed these synthetic oils in a lab from scratch as the Europeans and the Japanese do. So are these US spec oils really special or they are mostly marketing hype?

While there may (and I must stress the argument may) be a strong argument that US spec oils go through stricter regulatory oversight than Nigerian manufactured/blended oils, it is Euro spec oils (as a group), Japanese oils and a few others that truly
meet the definition of synthetic (with all the so called advantages accruing to the label).

What has never been fully clear to me is why over the years, no major oil company in Nigeria took advantage of the gap in the market for mineral oils with viscosities of 5W 20, 5W 30, 5W 40 etc. Surely they must have seen the trends? There are thousands of used cars imported from North America into Nigeria annually which require these viscosities and they do not necessarily require synthetic oil with the most recent API rating. A number of car owners in Nigeria who started purchasing synthetic oil a few years ago were boxed into buying Mobil 1 because it was the only locally available oil with the right viscosities - but you had to pay heavily for its synthetic qualities and its high API rating. The truth is that thousands of car owners in Nigeria today do not necessarily need synthetic oils with 'SN' API ratings for their vehicles. They'll do just fine with mineral oil, regularly changed.
To be frank with you .. USA spec Castrol full synethic oil is not very profitable for me to sell.. The reason is that the price that am willing to sell can't be the same as Mobil oil 1 . Am trying to make it affordable for people... I should have kept my mouth shut and just focus on mobil 1 ...I was only trying to offer a better alternatives for people that can't afford USA spec Mobil 1. Me personally Castrol is for good for regular cars ,while mobil 1 is good for high end cars. I can't sell a product that me myself can't use .. So let us clear that up.
And my conclusion to castrol is not only the price and value you get for your money.. But the great reviews it got from users of the product.. Now if you are reading a product review and out 300 people gave the product 4out of 5stars , wouldn't you take that into consideration before buying the product... next time I will keep my mouth shut and not give people alternatives . This is the same person that gave alternative to people to try elantra since corolla is very expensive.. As a matter of fact friend of mine blames me for the cost of elantras going up.. He said I made people aware of it.. This is a guy that buys cars for people.. That is why will tell you to in an old proverb ,you should always cover you pot , nobody needs to know what you are cooking...
In terms of your hype accusations... I don't go by it ,you keep forgetting that has more and more engines are high tech.. You will need better oil for them.. Your statement has no merit at all. Would you advice people to use mineral oil on a brand new car ,or use it on a G wagon or Bentley or better yet maybe we should mineral oil on a rolls royce now .. You are speaking really out of terms bro .. The benefits of synethic oil is more than the mineral oil bro .. I will rather take advice from the pros that built these cars .. Than somebody that is not in the field.. Your statement is very ill advise

Thank you for that link. It proves what I’ve been saying all night.

Manufacturers can’t mandate a brand.

It’s really easy stuff.

“So when it comes to oil, use any brand that meets the American Petroleum Institute (API) specifications listed in your owner's manual. And when it comes to other replacement fluids, use anything that says it meets Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) requirements.”

https://www.cartalk.com/content/oil-it-ok-use-different-brand-name
Yes I do agree with you, u don't have to use the manufacture brand of oil ... but at the same time it also stated the reason you should use the manufacture brand or reccomdated brand
We can agree to disagree.. I prefer to use the manufacture reccomdation. .. Due to the fact that am not good with cars at all ,and I will play it safe by following their advice.. And in most cases the manufacture reccomdation is readily available.. Now if the manufacture reccomdation is not available, I than have the option to use something similar in terms weight and grade etc... in my opinion manufacture reccomdation is and will be readily available.. Worse comes to worse u can order it online.. Like I said before am not a car person.. So I will just go with their advice.. That is my own view anybody else is free to do what they fit pleases them.. And for me personally the more expensive a car is the more I will follow their advice.. For me example if I were to buy a brand new Bentley or rolls royce or any of these super sport cars.. I will for certain follow their advice o, that is non negotiable at all .. To the point that any repairs will be done at the dealership .. Cars are now getting more sophisticated now .. Can't take any chances at all

1) Any manufacturer can RECOMMEND any oil brand.

2) No manufacturer can deny your warranty because you did not use their recommended brand.

The key is as I’ve tried to explain is

1) Composition that manufacturers require. For my MY09 Jetta, VW requires an oil that meets their 502.00

2) weight, such as 0W40

3) change frequency, keep your receipt to prove

Do these things and no manufacturer will deny your claim because you didn’t use their recommended brand.

I’ve met with many factory representatives and this is first hand information.

Google is not my friend, maybe it's yours.

Some of us create what Google captures in their database.

Castrol is simply low-grade oil. Someone else already said something similar.

Castrol with any of the other oil will work if it has the correct composition that meets the manufacturer's specifications and is of the correct weight. My issue is carrying it as if it's a premium oil. It's not.

But Audi, VW, BMW, Ranger rover do reccomend it .. I guess the manufacture are crazy... me am not understanding again

Are you pulling my leg here?

There's Castrol oil and there is Coastal oil. They are different. They are both just slightly better than junk to me. I use Mobil 1 exclusively in my garage.
I thought u were mixing the two together.. Lost in translation on my part .. I live on the east coast o.. Coastal oil I have not come across it before.. Maybe coz am not looking for it .. But the ones that I see all the time is vavoline , Castrol , quaker oil ..those brands are well advertise on TV

I am opening a boutique auto dealership in Ibadan and the info that I have is rather confidential market research.
Wish you the best.. Till than I will stick to my Castrol oil and mobil 1 oil for now .. Both in terms of price and value for money is a no brainer for me .. Am not saying others brands are bad o. Upon my reviews castrol is very ok. And range rover, audi, Vw , reccomend them for their cars.. So on that note I will take my chances with them... good luck in your endeavours both present and future ones ..

You can find Coastal oil at AutoZone for sure and maybe at Pep Boys. But for sure at AutoZone. I used it on my ride on mowers in a pinch.
My brother this is not castrol oil .. Have been saying castrol oil all along o .. Coastal oil u posted I will never use it , coz I never heard about it ...

This is a picture of my activities today.
No problem my brother.. If the manufacture advice to use mobil or castrol, that is what I will use o. I don't have the time or patient to start looking for similar weigh level etc that the manufacture reccomdated . When I can easily stop at gas station, autozone or even Walmart to get the manufacture choice... I don't like stress.. Funny enough u can even order them on line self, cheaper and faster....

I haven't bought a $150K car, yet. But when I do I will use any branded oil as long as it meets their composition specification.

There are consumer laws that protect consumers from this sham. Only non-astute consumers still believe and peddle the scare tactics that went out decades ago.

The manufacturers may know more than you, not sure of your education or your profession, but they don't know more than me or the average Autoist.

We have engineers from Ford, Nissan, Tesla, Chevrolet in my automotive and motorcycle clubs and on tech days they amongst other engineers from Dunlop, Metzeler, etc that sometimes give us lectures.

I will trust them before I trust a generic forum in some 3rd world country that their base meal are salvaged and flooded vehicles.

I also routinely do business with top engine builders in Southern California. These are guys that run vehicles with over 1,000 horsepower and they do know a thing or two about proper oil.

That is my bottom line.

PS: I am also an AMSOil dealer in Southern California by the way, where I have been since July 1986 and continuously.

So you are Amsoil dealer in California ? I don't get it ..on you post u were asking how to install a propane tank in your house.. And you snap a picture of it on ur post.. That environment does not look like California to me ... I am not understanding o

"Which Brand Should You Buy?

In short: It doesn't really matter. Pick between organic or synthetic, get the right weight, and then buy whatever's on sale at your local auto parts store.

All the brands you're likely to run into in the U.S. meet or exceed performance standards set by the American Petroleum Institute, or API. Therefore, any oil you buy will at least meet the standards required by your manufacturer."

I have a friend, an old automotive guy that's been building race engines since the 60's. Well, he swears by Coastal Oil. Coastal Oil for those not in the US are those oil that you find at the bottom of the shelve, cheap as shit. Like the article says, if it's available in the USA then it's sufficient. If it's available in Nigeria, if it's from Total, Mobil then it's good enough for me.

Well sorry bro .. I am Base in the USA, and not to bust your bubbles at all ..I will take my chances with America automobile expert over Nigerians any time... the Americans auto tech are way more advice than the Nigerians any given day.. Now to show how way behind the Nigerians auto tech are ..how many Nigerian hybrid auto tech do we have .. How many Nigerian auto tech can fix electric cars? By the time the world is fully into electric cars ,what happens to the Nigerians auto tech.. The last time I was in Lagos, I saw rolls royce G-wagon expensive cars that I can't even afford.. The first thing that came to mind was do they have the right mechanic to fix these cars if they are broken down ...if yes ,do they enough mechanic.. Bottom line is that American auto tech are highly educated and they have to go to an auto tech school ..they earn a certificate for that.. But for the Nigerian part, is a different story.. Even if they earn a certificate for it in Nigerian ..how many of it is actually legit certificate.. That is my view bro , I can barely trust American mechanic at times, talk less of the Nigerian ones

Of course, I follow manufacturers specification, not your convoluted specifications, and I have never had any failure related to oil in the past 35 years.

You only think I'm someone that you can teach about oil, vehicle maintenance and, manufacturers specifications. You're wasting your time.

No manufacturer will ever require that you use a specific brand in the USA. They can list their spec and weight, that is it.

You're also wrong about warranties. Even if you use the wrong oil and you have an oil related failure, you do not lose your warranty on the other components, only the oil-related ones.

One of the things that is also wrong with the Nigerian culture is people not taking time to do proper research.
Well in that case , if you decide to buy $150k car .. And the manufacture suggest to use mobil or castrol edge.. And u go against the manufacture advice coz u know better.. That is on u than ..me I will follow what the manufacture advice.. They know better than me and you.. Same thing with transmission fluid I will follow their advice.. And also the review in castrol is also what I go by.. Castrol oil had very good review.. Who better to ask than people that have used the product itself.. Out of 300 review ,a proud gets almost 4 out of 5 stars wouldn't you take those reviews into account? Been in the states for long, Americans don't joke with their products at all.. If it is bad you will definitely hear about it.. Before deciding on castrol oil I did my research and read the reviews.. And for value for money I will go for castrol oil anytime and any day ..

I just couldn't justify the importation cost when the exchange rate skyrocketed
Am sure if you look very well , u can get the import ones for an ok price.. Look at me for example I have a USA spec castrol oil 5quarts for 13500k ..now compare that price with the sub standard oil been sold in Nigeria.. My point is you just have to look for good deals for the imported products.. It will not drop on your lap..

This.

I will not use Castrol in my lawnmower. It’s a 3rd grade product. From my testing it looses oil pressure quicker. No time for trash.

I will use local oil but in the right formula and weight.

The most important thing is a prudent interval.

I will carry USA oil, Mobil 1 and AMSOil but used as special request on high echelon vehicles. The go to oil will be a local one.
Google is your friend.. USA spec Castrol oil is one of the best in terms of value for money.. It can equally compete with mobil 1 . And much better than the trash that is imported into Nigeria. The bottom line is anything produce in the USA is quality assurance compare to African countries..

You might want to read up on the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act.
The bottom line is to follow the manufacture advice to avoid complicated issues plain and simple.. Why do u want to make things difficult, when u can easily follow directions.. The statement I made also has to do with the Nigerian culture.. Bottom line we Nigerians don't follow directions, when it comes to maintance .. Look at out at the aviation industry

Ha na carshopper and Gazzuzz be the real veteran o .. Me am operating from afar ..but I have a good team around.. I dey manage small small, the only truth I tell you. Don't expect to start making money rite away o.. Same weeks u will loss money, sometimes money made will go back to repairs. Do the basic check, guarantor, tracker. Address verification, assurance deposit should be around 15k to 20k .. Once the driver start to default, use their deposit to try and balance up.. Collect your car if the driver is messing up. It is better to have your car to sit and wait till you get a good driver.. Than to lose money and have them drop I meant dump your car in bad shape.. And than spend for repairs.

NOTE: "assurance deposit " will not solve all the problems. It will only help to reduce your risk.. Nobody wants to get f*@ked over, but at least nobody wants to be f@cked twice

Before we left he told me he wanted to travel for 1week and he doesnt have somebody to secure the car with and as such he will like to park the car in my compound, and he explained to me that he will change the 2 damaged frnt tyre, spare tyre and the side mirror when he comes back because he was gng for an installation, only for him to call my lawyer after 2 days that the contract did go as plan and he wants to quite uber.

3 tyres are completely damaged, front shocks are gone, front and back bumper dented, passenger side mirror is damage, i am yet to ascertain other parts of the car because i traveled the following day he dropped the car. I have called my lawyer we are going to gt him arrested and also move against his guarantors because we agreed that his guarantor will be held responsible for any damaged caused by him that can not be taken care of by the insurance coy

Its painful because i knw he will still get a vehicle here on this platform..
