LANDING GIST

‘Darling, which night do you remember as being the most tensed night for you in the past couple of years?’. ‘Tonight’, she responded. I smiled as she had barely spoken my mind. It was the night before the day our lives would change forever.

The previous day, I suddenly realized our names were not written correctly on our tickets. We called Jumia asap, sent mails and nothing was forthcoming. Village people at work. My chest was doing gbimgbim. I rushed to the airport, Egypt air office and asked for help. I was told my agent had to make a note on the ticket. Agent Kwa, I said it was Jumia, they wondered why we had to book on JUMIA.

The next morning, I put off the alarm right before it rang. No, my natural clock did not wake me up…, I did not sleep. Man was thinking on the 30-hours flight to the promise land. We were prepared by 6.am. FIL came to pick us up at 7.30 am, flight was for 3:05 pm. Did you say ahn ahn, na so na, to avoid stories that touch ni, having experienced a 3hours traffic delay to the cargo company the weekend before departure. True to it, there was traffic as envisaged but FIL mental GPS pass google own, the man sabi road mehn. Moreso we had to make some stops to pick up our items, bid goodbyes and I had to visit the barbers shop. Man had to look sweet for the journey besides I had to barb ‘skin’ so that before the hair grows, I would be able to visit the barber without calculating how much a CAD is to NGN. I also had to settle the ticket name issue as JUMIA was yet to correct it.

4 bags, a baby and a madam, we entered MMIA by 11:30 am. Our boxes were slightly overweight, but the lady checked them in. Proceeded to collection of boarding pass. The ticket issue was resolved right at the desk, the officer was able to make a note on it in case of subsequent questioning. That was done in good time too and we had to go off to departures. It was an emotional one for my FIL and wife, made me realize much more that this step had to be worth it.

FIL left and we proceeded into the departure hall, one or two conversations with the customs officers and that was it. No direct request for ‘shai shai’. It was coded in their exceptional attention and services, so we were not obliged to. We just did at our own discretion.
We departed at about 3:40pm. The 5 hours flight was good. We were served about 30 minutes into our journey. Brethren, the hunger that was wiring us had doctorate degree. We were prepared to eat the worst. When the meal finally came it was redemption song for us! Amen! We ate everything, even the one that was supposed to be dessert follow join. We kuku get Flagyl for hand. I asked for cereal for baby, although we had packed in the diaper bag. The hostess was not forthcoming, so I asked for another meal so the mother would eat for two. Lol. We were given bassinet for the baby, I guess it was because we had picked the bulkhead seats for that flight when we checked in on line. She didn’t stay in it though. By the time the second meal came, we now started forming posh as hunger no dey matter again. There was a central in-flight entertainment that we weren’t interested in.

We landed in Cairo, and had a stopover of two hours. The flight to Toronto was cool too. No bassinet. Good meals. We had eaten twice before they woke us up again for breakfast. I had to ask wetin we con dey chop since? In- flight entertainment was okay. Wifey watched different movies, while I was stuck on the satellite movement of the plane. 12 hours later, we landed in YYC baibeeeee!!! I stylishly shaku-shakued into the airport. Sincerely, this place is not overrated, the people are cool, friendly, exceptionally good to babies. We were asked basic questions at the point of entry including how much we were coming with and if we had goods to follow. We proceeded to immigration to stamp our COPR and process our PR card. The guy that attended to us was awesome. We waited for few minutes and we were advised on when we will get our PR cards. Then he said, ‘Welcome to Canada’. The handout they gave us to read ehn, no be here. The books contain information that would be needed. We proceeded to get our SIN and it was smooth too.

Our connecting flight to Alberta was in 4hrs, so we ate and roamed the airport. We boarded our Air Canada flight and it was okay. Meals were served at different prices except water which was free. There was in-flight entertainment. We landed about 2:30pm Calgary time. I walked out of the airport to get a taxi, I had to do a reverse (Micheal Jackson's moonwalk style) back in immediately. The cold that touched my skull ehn. Got Uber to take us to our Airbnb apartment. Eyes closed, we didn’t wake up until midnight same day.

So far, we have registered for health services, gotten our phone lines, opened bank accounts, been to the settlement agency, accommodation is almost sorted. Our cargo also arrived in one week from cargo date. So the ministry of Poundo and Egusi elemi meje continues although wifey has said we should be eating posh food. Lessons learnt so far; Its everybody’s country, do not be intimidated. Be kind and ask questions politely. Reading did not stop at IELTS, this is just the beginning. Read everything, receipts, contracts, coupons, laws, agreements e.t.c so you don’t enter one chance. Having a car is a necessity, the expanse of land is crazy, the country is freaking big. For those who have friends helping them around, give those friends a tight hug cos they are saving you alot. Uber fare is crazy. Grocery shopping is not so bad except for those that buy names. You only have to check and recheck for discounts and offers. Know why you are here, don’t do follow follow. In all, I am certain it’s gonna be a good place. Besides my phonetics is changing small small o, I can’t help it. *winks* All the best guys.

Hi, I just thought to chip in a little info from what I've gathered so far about Halifax. I'm not in Canada yet but public transport system is great as long as you have your bus pass.

Health care is like every other places in Canada

Crime rates .. I can't say much about this .

And I know there are Nigerians out there in Halifax. They have meetings monthly or so . Check " Nigerians in Halifax" on YouTube .

And apartment depends on what you are looking for, as in your taste... But budget $600 for a 2 bed but mind you, it won't be anything fancy.

To know more about the city, you will find lots of videos on YouTube(Even for apartments)

Sorry but I hope this helps... Good luck to you .

coconuthead:
Please who knows a thing or two about Halifax? Will be grateful to connect with people from that end.

What should I budget for 2 bedroom apartment?
How is public transport in the city
Health care?
Crime rates?

Is there a whatsapp group for Nigerians in Halifax?

Oh okay ... I believe via express entry route , you get your PR. I dropped the hint of express entry when I saw your profile and you are still considering study route .

Let the gurus with much more knowledge chip in there thoughts .

But whatever decision you make , I pray it favors you . Good luck in everything .

Hmmm
Thank you. I'm just projecting and trying to weight diff options
Is there any diff between Express Entry and PR?

MBA and working experience ? I think you should consider express entry program .. just my thought though .

Hi house,
I have two questions

1. Who has applied to Thompson Rivers here? I need some tips as I want to apply for the September intake and it looks confusing. I do have my transcript, resume and the $100 for the app ready.

I came across Maple education who are direct affiliates with TRU, will it give me an edge per admission if I use them?

2. If you get your MBA in the United States and work in IT or any other job for about 2 years, can you easily apply for PR in Canada? Will it be more straight forward Than applying from Nigeria?

Someone should please answer me

Thank you and God bless as you do so

Yup , I agree with you .. Fly with SA airways .. I’ve been to SA twice and I flew with there national carrier the two times . I didn’t encounter any problem nor questioning . In fact , they didn’t ask for my Yellow while they asked my mate who flew with air Rwanda . SAA is not too expensive , I’d advise you fly with them if you are a first time traveler .

Peace and good luck to everyone

IT IS NOT ADVISABLE TO BOOK KENYAN AIRWAYS COMING TO SA AS A FIRST TIME VISITOR. ALOT OF PEOPLE FACE HARD TIMES AT PEOPLE AND HAVE BEEN RETURNED BACK WITH NO VALID REASONS. USE THEIR NATIONAL CARRIER.

You mean another ticket ? If that is the case , you are using the initial one .. Your flight has only been delayed for 15 minutes probably because of maintenance purposes. Have a safe flight .

My Landing Gist

Sorry this is coming late guys.

So I woke up early on December 9, 2018 as I couldn’t sleep because of too much excitement to finally settle in my beloved Canada. My Lufthansa flight to Toronto via Frankfurt was scheduled for 11:40 PM, I got to the airport just in time to check in. After the much dreaded checking in, I had a huge relief. From AoR to PPR to CoPR, village people still wanted to at least try their luck again at the airport. My dad’s car broke down just as we arrived the airport. My other 2 brothers were not allowed in so they had to stay back to check the car, we said our emotional goodbyes and took goofy selfies with plenty hugs. @Topsmamen was not with us as he was out of the country, chillaxing somewhere. Getting to checking in, I had an excess of 13KG and while the immigration lady was still talking, my head was running around analysing what heavy items were in what bag and how I could reduce the weight. A friend in Toronto asked me to bring her some clothing and food items and knowing I would be staying with her, that was the least I could do. I kept thinking - “Should I remove these heavy boots? Do I drop some bags of Semo or the Poundo Yam?”. While I was standing there thinking, from the corner of my eye, I could see the lady staring at me waiting for me to end my drama, I looked up at my Dad and I could see the lines of worry on his face. He’s a conscientious person and seeing him like that pained me. “It happens”, so he said. After weighing my bags at home, my people, it’s like the weighing scales they use at the airports do ojoro for us o.

So the next thing I heard was “Madam, I like your tshirt. That text is funny. Please bring your bags”. I looked down at my tshirt like I totally forgot what was written there. On my tshirt was written – “I hate being too pretty but someone’s gotta do it”. Well, I don’t blame myself, na excess luggage wahala cause am. I glanced again over at my Dad and gave him a thumbs up, I’m not quite sure but I think I saw his mouth say the word - “Halleluyah”. I don't know what made her to do that but it was divine favor, I thanked the kind lady and we finally cleared immigration, took some more selfies with my Dad, we prayed and made video calls with family and friends.

The flight was smooth. The in-flight entertainment wasn’t bad. I watched some movies like the much-hyped Crazy Rich Asians and A Quiet Place. The food was okay too. It was a 6-hour, 30-minute flight. I sat between an elderly Naija woman and a middle-aged Indian man who was in Nigeria for 1 week and I was surprised that within a week, he had already been to Abuja, Lekki, Ikeja, Ibadan, Yaba, Surulere, Benin, PH, even Abule Egba and Ketu. Talk about being an ajala the traveller. Said he has been hearing about kidnappings in Naija but he was not scared to move around. In my mind I was like, “correct! Shina Rambo”. He kuku looked like a Bollywood actor from one of those funny Indian low-grade action movie clips we see on social media. Very friendly and funny guy. Within a short period, I got to learn a lot from my new-found travel buddy, his name was Susanta. I asked him about their light festival - Diwali and he spoke at length about their culture and religion. I was enjoying his gist until it got to a point where I wished I could give him a tranq shot because I needed some sleep, he eventually drifted off to sleep with his face, in my direction, and too close to my face. I carefully nudged him to adjust on few occasions…and shook my head…..my new Bollywood friend…....sigh.

I had a 4-hour layover in Frankfurt. Connected to WiFi to inform the fam that I had landed safely in Frankfurt, I checked my emails and chatted with a few people. I think my friend-turned sister, @dumsydsassy1 too, to ask her if she had updates on her PPR.
The flight to YYZ was via Air Canada and I was already exhausted. Another 9 hours to Toronto? I just wanted the journey to end. When will scientists make time travel a reality? We are tired of the fiction and the lies. Lol.

The second leg of the flight was smooth at first. 3 hours into the journey, there was so much turbulence, it wasn’t normal at all. I was shaking and scared to my bones, my fear level was crazy. I’m not sure I was still breathing sef. This is no exaggeration fam. A lady about 3 seats behind my row, was repeatedly screaming “Father Lord! Peace be still! Father Lord! Peace be still!”. I had never been scared in my life. A white lady beside me put her head between her thighs and stayed silent. It lasted for about 5-15 minutes and there was calm. I was pressed to go use the bathroom but I just sat there, still shaking. About a few minutes later, I stood up to go to the bathroom and as I was walking in between the aisle, someone touched me. My eyes widened in surprise, it was my Indian friend, I totally forgot he mentioned he was also going to Toronto. How come I didn’t see him at the airport in Frankfurt? Stealth move, perhaps? Bollywood style? Is he a secret agent? Lol. I was like “ss…santa!” I couldn’t remember his full name. I only remembered “santa”. It was Christmas time anyway, lol. We chatted a bit and I got back to my seat, I couldn’t sleep anymore so I just flipped through magazines and listened to music. The flight attendants brought in snacks and more food but I was not in the mood, I just wanted to land already. The thought of being thousands of miles above the Atlantic gave me cramps. Seeing the plane’s path in the graphical flight path on the screens didn’t help much too.

We finally landed in Toronto around 1PM with few sounds of people clapping. I looked round and saw a white folk clapping too. Huh? I thought it was only us Nigerians and Africans that clap when landing is a success? Well, this turbulence was an exception so resounding claps of joy and relief were needed. Lol.

Clearance through immigration was smooth with no issues. I connected to WiFi and gave my host a Whatsapp call. Thankfully, she was somewhere close to the airport to pick me up. I proceeded to the luggage carousel to pick my bags. I wheeled the bags and sat at a waiting area, took a quick selfie and sent to my family Whatsapp group with the caption – “Look who just landed in Toronto”. I looked at the section of the signed copy of my CoPR where it says “Became a PR on December 10” and with a grateful heart, I said a silent prayer of thanksgiving. My friend picked me up and we took off. The weather was chilly but mild. She made me some nice poundo yam and egusi soup and I went to catch a good sleep later.

Fast forward to today, I am now in Oshawa, ON. Just yesterday, I had a 2-hour interview/registration process and thankfully, it was a success. I sat with one of the Directors of the Company and she was so cool and friendly. We got talking like we have known each other for ages. I got the employment offer for the position of a Clients’ Services Advisor and will commence training today. I have a well-established friend based in Edmonton who constantly encourages me to relocate to Edmonton because she says there are several health-related jobs there. Especially in the field I am in, Health and Social Care.

I am grateful to God, my family and friends, for a smooth landing.

I have landed in praise. God bless you all.

@Topsmamen, @dumsydsassy1, @raphrulz, @joo2018, @Ifeoma77, @ramj, @Tojued, @Tippex, @zeiya, @fatiah: I am waiting for your landing gists o.
