Politics › Re: As Easy As PDP (to Defeat) By Sonala Olumhense - A Must Read !!! by duwdu: 11:25am On Nov 16, 2014
Sonala Olumhense is always an erudite, truthful, factual, and non-sentimental writer. This write-up is no different, and I do agree with it.

By the way, this is the first instance of his writings that I know of, in which Sonala would be direct in a belief that PDP could actually be voted out of power. He's always taciturn.

That says a lot, in my book. It, in fact, makes one more hopeful.

In addition, I do expect the leaders of opposition to the PDP at ALL levels – especially at the Federal level – to effectively mobilize and organize the people to go out there and vote; and for the INEC to try all that's humanly possible and make every legitimate vote – from ALL sides – to count.

Those will constitute the stuff of which the beginning of a true political evolution in Nigeria shall be made.

Dear Nairalanders:

The subject matter just appeared online..., and I quote:

EXCLUSIVE: Boko Haram sacks entire Nigerian Army battalion, confiscates all arms, ammunition

November 12, 2014.
Premium Times

Image: Nigerian soldiers on patrol in Maiduguri

The terrorists arrived suddenly at 4:00 p.m. that ill-fated Wednesday, November 5, catching the Nigerian soldiers and their commanders off-guard. As they invaded the headquarters of the 174 Battalion, Abadan Local Government Area of Borno State, located close to the Nigerian border with Niger, the Boko Haram insurgents, in hundreds, began to shoot sporadically in all directions.

According to witnesses, the terrorists were led into the battalion headquarters by insurgents bearing a number of Rocket Propelled Grenades (a shoulder-launched anti-tank weapon) and machine guns mounted on Hilux vans. Other insurgents, bearing AK-47 rifles, followed behind, shooting and chanting “Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar” (May God be praised).

For minutes, the attackers were repelled by Nigerian soldiers who returned fire, and at some point, appeared to be gaining the upper hand, our sources said.

But the troops capitulated shortly after more insurgents advanced on the camp from several directions, hurling grenades at them and shooting non-stop, our sources said. The soldiers fled the scene as it became clear they were less armed and prepared for battle.

Several Nigerian soldiers who took part in the fighting have narrated how Boko Haram secured yet again another victory over government forces, a defeat they blamed on their arms and the morale of the fighting force.

Boko Haram has seized many towns and communities in recent months, sacking security facilities while soldiers flee, in what appears the worst defeat yet for the Nigerian military since the insurgents launched a bloody campaign in 2009.

The 174 Battalion, which was moved from its Lagos base to the Nigerien border in Nigeria’s bid to rev up the war against the extremist Boko Haram sect, had over 300 soldiers. Over a thousand insurgents attacked the troops, witnesses said.

Before long, military insiders said, the soldiers began to abandon the battle in droves, throwing away their uniforms and yielding their arms to the terrorists. The terrorists followed in pursuit as majority of the soldiers and officers fled across the border into neighbouring Niger where some of them were hospitalized.

A yet unknown number of soldiers were killed; some declared missing while several others were injured, our sources said.

After the Nigerian soldiers fled, military officials said, the Boko Haram insurgents ransacked the camp, looting the battalion armoury and offices.

“They went away with every weapon we had,” one of the soldiers who partook in the battle told PREMIUM TIMES. “RPGs, armoured tanks, rifles, ammunition, I mean everything. As we are now, we have nothing. They have gone away with everything.”

He added, “We were simply overpowered. They were far more in number and the weapons they carried were far more than what we had. They could have finished all of us if we hadn’t fled.”

The spokesperson of the Defence Headquarters, Chris Olukolade, did not answer or return calls seeking comment for this story.

But a top military commander, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES.

“I can’t confirm to you that it happened but we have managed to bring back the soldiers to Nigeria,” the general said. “The matter is being investigated.”

He blamed the incident on cowardice by soldiers of the battalion saying, “Initially, they were talking of weapons. But the weapons have started arriving. The problem now is the mentality of our soldiers. A lot of them are just cowards and should not have been recruited into the Army in the first place. The fact is if you don’t have the mentality of a soldier, you can’t fight a battle no matter the sophistication of your arm.”

The November 5 attack on the battalion was the second on the formation by Boko Haram. On August 4, 2013, the insurgents attacked the battalion, killing 15 soldiers and wounding several others.

Before the November 5 attack, some soldiers of the battalion had told PREMIUM TIMES their morale was at an all-time low.

“A lot of us have been here for more than two years without being allowed to see our family,” one soldier said “We were to be here for six months but we have now been abandoned here for two years. We are missing our families and our morale is zero. Some of us are even considering going on AWOL (away without official leave).”
Unquote.

INEC begins voter registration in Lagos, six others today

Posted by: Vincent Ikuomola, Abuja in News 9 hours ago

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will begin the Continuous Voter Registration ((CVR) today in Lagos, Kano, Edo, Plateau, Ogun, Imo and Adamawa.

The CVR, which INEC said was for eligible persons who were not on the biometric register, would end on Monday.

The commission advised the electorate to check for their names before participating in the exercise to avoid double registration.

INEC, in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, enjoined “residents of the affected states who are yet to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to first check the register and ascertain whether or not they are already on it.”

INEC explained that those whose names appeared on the register, but yet to collect their PVCs should not present themselves for the CVR.

“The way to check if they are on the register of voters is simply to send an SMS to dedicated lines with the following information: Name of state, surname, the last five or six digits of the VIN (i.e., Voter Identification Number) on their Temporary Voter Card (for example: Lagos, Salama, 06782”.

Idowu advised those concerned to ensure that they put coma in-between the required information before sending it to 08171646879.

The statement also reads: “Alternatively, someone doing the checking could preface the short message with INEC (e.g.: INEC, Lagos, Salama, 06782) and send to 20120.

“The interrogator will get an instant response giving his / her full profile on the register and the polling unit number, if the person is actually on the register; or an advice to the contrary if the person is not.

“If a person is on the register and has not been able to obtain his/her PVC, he/she should go to the relevant local government office of INEC, where distribution of the cards will continue daily till the end of January, 2015.

“For avoidance of doubt, only those who the SMS service shows are not on the register need to present themselves for CVR, in addition to persons who are registering for the first time .”

The statement added that the exercise would “be efficient and far-reaching”, if only the people who genuinely needed to register present themselves for the CVR.

Idowu noted that the SMS facility was also available for people who want to check the voter register from other states.

2015: PDP National Chairman’s close associate campaigns for Buhari By Sylvester Ugwuanyi on November 5, 2014

Buhari

A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, bigwig in Bauchi State, Alhaji Hassan Mohammed Sheri, has opted not to be discreet any longer about his support for the presidential bid of General Muhammadu Buhari. This is as he has called on his supporters to vote for the former head of state in the next year’s presidential elections.

Sheri, who is from the same state as the PDP national Chairman, described Buhari as the most credible among those aspiring to lead the country in this present time.

The PDP chieftain, who is believed to be a close political associates of the PDP national chairman, Ahmadu Adamu Mu,azu and the FCT minister, Bala Mohammed, was speaking at a press conference in Bauchi on Tuesday.

While disclosing that Buhari’s crave for leadership is for Nigerians and not for himself, Sheri described Buhari as an exemplary leader who maintained his integrity despite the various positions he has held in Nigeria.

“If it is for money Buhari would have amassed wealth more than any Nigerian because he had held other lucrative positions that many Nigerians were not opportuned to, that could have enriched him,” he asserted.

Calling on the political class to ensure General Buhari assumes the mantle of leadership come 2015, the PDP faithful said, “Let me tell you categorically that I’m 100 percent in support of Buhari presidency come 2015 and therefore appeal to all Nigerians to ensure his victory at the polls,” he stressed and called on politicians, particularly members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure the emergence of Buhari as the APC flag-bearer in the forthcoming party primaries.

Politics › What Is Wrong With Igbo Politics In Nigeria? by duwdu(op): 3:47pm On Oct 13, 2014
Dear Nairalanders;

The following was sited this morning in the online newspaper, PointBlankNews:

What is wrong with Igbo Politics in Nigeria?

Last week a powerful delegation of Igbo leaders made up of secretary to federal government, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Minister of Labour & Productivity, Emeka Wogu, National Publicity Secretary PDP, Mr Olisa Metuh, Mr Ifeanyi Ubah and former Governor Peter Obi stormed Dover Hotel at Lekki Phase 1 Lagos to woo Ndigbo Lagos for President Jonathan’s 2015 presidential bid. At Dover Hotel, they met eminent and prominent Igbo leaders namely President General Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey, President Ndigbo Lagos, Professor Anya. O. Anya, President Aka Ikenga, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, former Chairman Diamond Bank, Chief Pascal Dozie, former Governor of Lagos State, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu(rtd), former President of Nigerian Stock Exchange, Dr Raymond Obieri, Eze Ndigbo of Ikeja, Eze Uche Dimgba and President Ohaneze Ndigbo Lagos, Barr Fabian Onwughalu and many other eminent Igbos in Lagos. Like I said their mission is to persuade Ndigbo in Lagos to join the train in the campaign to make President Jonathan to continue in office even after 2015. The meeting was well attended and this mission was clear: It is President Jonathan or nothing!

The Lagos mission has indeed thrown up some big questions on what Igbo agenda is in Nigeria. What does Igbo want in Nigeria? What is their strategy? What is their mission? What is their plan for Nigeria? What is their strength? What is their thinking? What is wrong with Igbo politics?

Few weeks back an Igbo youth I cannot remember his name posted a question on his Facebook page. Hear him: “Why is it that Igbo are always in the forefront to work for other people to be Presidents in Nigeria? Is it that no Igbo is good to be president of Nigeria?” He traced the days of IBB and Abacha when Chief Arthur Nzeribe and one Daniel Kanu played prominent roles to extend their tenures in office. Nzeribe went to court to stop June 12 1993 election so that IBB will continue in office. It failed: Daniel Kanu, Chief Arthur Eze, Orji Uzor Kalu, Sam Mbakwe, Onyeka Onwenu and others staged a two million man march tagged Youths Earnestly Asking for Abacha, YEAA in Abuja to get an extension of tenure for Abacha. It failed also. Of all the men that have led Ohaneze only Professor Ben Nwabueze and Dr Dozie Ikedife gave good account of themselves. Professor Irukwu sold Ohaneze to President Obasanjo’s failed third term bid for a price. The late Chief Ralph Uwechue sold Ohaneze for cash to President Jonathan in 2011. Now the current President General Ohaneze Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey has sold Ohaneze again to President Jonathan for 2015 elections. Today, like Daniel Kanu of YEAA, Ifeanyi Ubah is driving TAN for Jonathan. Now where does all this lead Igbo to? Is there anything they know that we do not know?

South East has the least number of States in Nigeria, the least number of Senators, the least number of House of Reps members, least number of State House of Assembly members, least number of Ministers at the federal level, least revenue allocation, least federal presence or Investment, least local governments, least wards and the least of everything in Nigeria. Can we conclude that Igbo worry about nothing except their stomach? Can we assume that an Igbo is not good to be president of Nigeria? Can we conclude that top Igbo Politicians lack strategy, tact and vision to think deep in matters of politics? Can we conclude that we are satisfied with the status-quo ante? Is there hope for Ndigbo in Nigeria’s Political equation? Igbo politics worries me to the marrows!

For eight years the former Governor of Anambra state, Mr Peter Obi ruled on the platform of APGA and according to him then, it was either APGA or nothing. To celebrate the late Ikemba Nnewi Chief Emeka Ojukwu, he wore his clothes everywhere he went, he erected billboards bearing his photo with Ikemba. Now few months after he left office, the bug has caught him up and he has moved to PDP, betraying the late Ikemba and APGA. Again what will you call this? Is it Politics of Ideas or what? Is it Politics of the stomach?

If Ndigbo help President Jonathan to remain in Power till 2019 where does this leave Ndigbo? By 2019 Southern Nigeria would have been in power for 18 years. Now do you think the North will just sit down to continue to be spectators in a democracy? Is this what we struggled for from 1985 to 1999? The South did not struggle for power shift to the South so as to keep it for 18 years. It will be a threat to democracy, a threat to national unity and a threat to the corporate existence of Nigeria as a political entity. This is a timely warning!

As 2015 draws near, our prominent and eminent Igbo leaders do not think about the state of the nation. They are not worried about insecurity in the land. They are not worried about the tragedy in the power sector, they are not worried about outrageous corruption, impunity and mediocrity at the federal level, they are not worried about the threat to national unity, they are not worried about colossal decay of infrastructure, they are not worried about the decay in our schools and hospitals, they are not worried about Nigeria’s monumental battered image and they are not worried about Nigeria’s threatened future. There is no strategic alliance with the major ethnic groups, the Hausa-Fulani and the Yoruba just for the sake of Nigeria. They abuse them and call them names forgetting that they need their votes to rule Nigeria. They allow their flanks to be infiltrated for a mess of porridge. It is money for hand back for ground. It is give me money and I kill myself (Inyem ego egbuom onwem). The truth is that Igbo has been left behind in matters of Nigerian politics. There is no strong presence in PDP and no strong presence in APC, the two major parties. Igbo politics worries me to the bones!

But it is not yet a hopeless case for Igbo. Things can get better if we sit down to discuss strategies and think properly. If you do not know where you are going, nobody can help you. If you do not stand for something, nobody will take you serious. If you do not love others, then they can never trust you. If you do not show some seriousness in anything you do, nobody will take you serious.

The truth is that South South and South East votes cannot make President Jonathan president again in 2015 if politics is still a game of numbers. Given the situations in the country, given the gamut of failures staring us in the face in every department in Nigerian and given the bloodshed we have recorded in the past 15 years of democracy, President Jonathan ambition to rule Nigeria for 10 years is a difficult pill to swallow.

Joe Igbokwe

If the subject development is indeed true, then the PDP strategists have just shot their own party on the foot, in my view. I think this because, henceforth, and until the Presidential candidate of the APC for the 2015 general election is established, all eyes would be on the APC – enabling the APC to garner free publicity and get further engrained in the mind of the general public. This normally is an invaluable advantage in politics.

At the same time, however, the APC would need to make sure the party is not in the news mostly for the wrong reasons, otherwise it may turn out to be "double whammy" in favor of the PDP in the elections. (Apologies to John Major, a former multi-term premier of Great Britain.)

I have come to deduce that, what "DATA ON" actually does, is to enable access to data for services that are not covered by a subscriber's browsing/service plan, at the expense of normal credit on a line. At least that's what MTN's welcome message says when their BlackBerry plans are activated.

And, as far as my own experience goes, "DATA OFF" does not prevent access to data as will be accessed via an existing/incoming data plan. So, @player007's advice should be on point.

Again, these are my own deductions, so please proceed with caution.

Good luck.
