Index Fund Investing Vs. Stock Picking

Whenever you think about index fund investing, think about an index as something that is tracking the performance of something else.

Some examples are:

1. The tech industry- what is the overall performance .

2. What is the index of the overall best Premier League players out there.

An index is just something tracking something.

When you think about investing into an index fund, what you're really doing is investing into something that's tracking an overall performance of whatever industry you actually want to invest into.

Let's break this down for our analogy:

So we've got Cooler 1, which tracks the tech industry. Inside we have: Puff Puff - Amazon Samosa Facebook Spring roll-Samsung BBQ chicken - Apple Asun - Tesla

An index fund investor will take a variety of small chops (diversification) to reduce the likelihood of one being bad, whereas a stock picker will only choose one thing.

For index fund investors, it doesn't matter if one company fails or your piece of chicken is stale because you still have other things in the cooler to fall back on, whereas if all your chicken is stale and the company you picked fails, you'll lose everything.

Picture this, you're at an Owambe, and there are 3 coolers full of small chops. Imagine cooler 1 tracks companies in the tech industry, cooler 2 is real estate, and cooler 3 is healthcare. Whatever cooler you choose to invest in - all you're literally doing is buying every single company that's a part of that industry.

So, for example, when people say they are invested in the S&P 500 - all that really is is a cooler of the top 500 largest companies, and when you invest in this cooler, you're investing into every single one of these companies and getting the average return every year of that overall. index. Simple right?!

Tyre Nichols, who was 29 years old, was brutally murdered by police officers on Saturday, 7 January, after they stopped him under suspicion of reckless driving in Memphis, Tennessee. Bodycam footage of the encounter was published on Friday, 27 January, showing him being severely beaten by police.

What's even more complicated about his death was the race of the police officers themselves, as all five men who are now facing murder charges are black too.

The charges include second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

It makes Nichols' death look different from some of the most infamous cases of police violence or killings involving black victims and primarily white officers, such as Rodney King in Los Angeles, Michael Brown in Ferguson, and George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The last few months of 2022 were filled with people reacting to the iconic dance from this movie, M3GAN. The dance included bizarre spins and a flip while maintaining a placid unmoving expression.

Well, we finally decided to see what all the fuss was about, and we were pleasantly surprised.

If you haven't seen the trailer, let's give a summary. The story follows a young, newly orphaned girl named Cady (Violet McGraw) who is moving in with her young aunt, Gemma (Allison Williams).

Her aunt is overwhelmed with the responsibility of raising a child but, fortunately, works in a science lab that makes robots in their spare time.

1. Parson's Special

Harry Craddock, the British barman who promoted American cocktail culture in London during the 1920s and '30s, presided over the American Bar at The Savoy Hotel. Craddock was known for serving the rich and famous hundreds of cocktail concoctions.

In his seminal compilation, The Savoy Cocktail Book, published in 1930, he offered a creamy fruit treat called the Parson's Special. The drink looks deceptively like a Brandy Alexander when served in a small old-fashioned glass.

Ingredients

• 240 ml freshly- squeezed orange juice

• 1 egg yolk

• 1-2 dashes of fresh grenadine

Method

Shake the juice, yolk and grenadine vigorously over ice. Strain into a small old- fashioned or rocks glass.

2. Keep Sober

Craddock also devised a long drink for customers abstaining from the popular Collinses, Rickeys and Highballs of the day. The Keep Sober appears in The Savoy Cocktail Book too. A rose-tinted, citrusy refreshment, it's a good alternative for gin-and-tonic lovers.

Ingredients

10 ml fresh grenadine

10 ml lemon syrup 150 ml tonic water

Method

Combine grenadine, syrup and water in an ice-filled highball glass. Stir with a spoon and serve.

The internet is running wild over the messy breakup between Shakira and her long-time boyfriend, Pique. The Colombian singer and the former Spanish footballer have been dating for over 12 years and have two children together.

Although their relationship has been tagged as controversial, with Shakira making statements like "Gerard (Pique) does not let me make videos with men; he is a very conservative person," and yet Pique's cheating rumours have been swirling around the internet for some time now.

Although according to some sources, that was not what started the disagreements between the two. According to Garcia, a friend of the couple and Shakira's sister's ex- boyfriend, the couple's issues started over money. In 2022, Shakira was brought to trial for tax fraud and was allegedly going to face an eight-year prison sentence.

The charges claimed that Shakira had not paid over $14 million in taxes from the years 2012 to 2014. Regardless, the singer's former boyfriend allegedly requested money from her. The fact that Shakira denied the request allegedly caused a rift between the two of them.

With only a few working days left to phase out old 1,000, 500 and 200 Naira notes as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced the deadline for people using old notes until January 31, Nigerians are now in a rush of panic to change their old currencies to new notes.

Some businesses in Nigeria have started rejecting old naira notes earlier than the deadline and stated their reasoning was that they don't want to miss the CBN deadline if they continue to collect old notes from their customers.

This deadline will negatively affect many Nigerians, especially since over 50% of Nigerians do not have a registered bank account and may lose their cash savings following CBN's requirement that old notes could only be exchanged through an existing bank account.

In separate resolutions, the House of Representatives and the Senate recently asked CBN to extend the deadline by six months till July 31.

Sada Soli who is a House of Representatives member based in Katsina state who is in favour of the extension, said that banking and other financial institutions are struggling to cope with the rush by citizens to change their old currencies to new notes, just as the shortage of new notes is creating panic.
