Help me satisfy my curiousity to know if its wise to marry a lady who is not financially independent. there's this thread i saw and NLanders made it look like its not a good idea for a man to marry such a liability. As i dey think my marriage late next year, i won Know who i should keep off from. wink
Also, married guys, was your wife independent?
You need to decide what it is you want from your partner. What are your expectations apart from the monetary aspect? What if the lady in question is the exact opposite to what you want but is loaded / working? Does this mean you'll reconsider your values and expectations?

If so, then I sense sugar mummy things.

Nice thread i must say. I really need someone to talk to as i am so depressed right now. I met this guy sometime last year we started dating, he told me he wanted to marry me. Things were nt working well for him after a while and when my school was on strike i visited and was with him for the five months the strike lasted assisting him finacially althrough including the sachet water we drank. My school resumed and i left for school, finished my exams for the semester and went to visit him only to get the embarrassment of my life. My so called fiance ignored me like a plague and told me never to come to his house without first informing him he also said so many hurtful things to me.This is someone i love with the whole of my heart. Am so depressed that i can't even sleep at night. I am slowly developing a hbp. I used my brother's nairaland account for this post
I'm sorry I don't get this.

How could you live with a guy you just met (i.e: within the year) for five months? Where are your parents / guardians, or whoever it is that pays your school fees? Didn't they have a say in your decision to go live with your boyfriend for five months? Secondly, where did you - as a student - get the money from to assist him financially?

Okay, my first instinct in response to your question would have been to say an emphatic "NO". But then again, my standards, your standards, and everyone elses's standards may differ. So what might be an absolute no-no for you in terms of what you expect from a man, could be an absolute yes-yes for some other lady.

Thank you for reminding me let me find out how much I have on all these my various loyalty cards ..my new love is Holland and Barrett(whole foods healthier options etc) and they sent me an email with some points so let me go check.I spend way too much time and money in there
Lol! You are right. In and out, but I will try very hard this coming new year to curb the habit. I think I'm nearly there anyway. I just need to put pen to paper all my outlays (sigh).

Oh, I'm starting out something new - you might do this for your kids when they're older....I've told my teenage sons I'll pay them £20 per "A" grade and for my oldest, £40 per "A" grade for his A-level subjects.

But then decided to up the stakes - £100 per "A" grade for the A-level subjects, and £50 per "A" grade for the others. No reward for B's and less. Those who get A's will get their money this Christmas. A trip to the £1 shop / pound savers for those who didn't hit the mark. grin grin

I'm planning to make this a frequent occurrence per grade card results received. What d'you think?

That's very good. Beans is also a good base meal.

You will get more creative as the time goes on and buying lunch will eventually become a once in a while treat for you .

You are trying with the breakfast o .me I have something a bit more filling which is always mostly unsweetened oats and a fruit/veg though. Some days I have 0% Greek yoghurt and a bannana, some days 1 whole meal toast boiled eggs and a tomato but I must chop.

I work out in the mornings now and have very light dinners so I would just faint if I did not have a somewhat filling breakfast .also means I snack less. Snacking was my greatest issue.
Lol @ trying with the breakfast! I've moved on from the plain porridge thingy as I feel it's way too heavy for me. I now try to detox every morning with the lime and lemon thingy. Only problem is, after drinking so much water, I end up urinating like a tap every 30 mins for the next 2 hours. grin grin It's terrible when the trains are delayed but I guess (according to my friend), I nor dey hear word. So the next time you see a lady flying the barrier at London Bridge station trying to get to the loo, you'll know it'll probably be Efe...lol!

Greek yoghurt - isn't that very fattening? shocked

Haha! Yes na - I need to source some ideas from you.

I was thinking, I could put that £50 - £60 I save weekly on buying lunch, etc from work into a Cash ISA every week. That's been my honest intention but then I found myself shopping at Boots embarassed embarassed Which isn't such a bad thing oh! As they had this deal going on last week or so at the Canary Branch - Spend £50 or more and get £10 worth of Advantage points on your Boots Card. I managed to get up to £52 worth of points and guess what? I found that bike my daughter's been asking for since the beginning of this year. £35. Now that's come in quite handy for me. Don't ask me what I'll be getting the others - it's a completely different story! cool cool
FoodRe: Paste Pics Of Your Healthy Meal Here. by EfemenaXY: 3:43pm On Dec 21, 2015

My office is in a awkward location and so you don't have a wide range of places to get food s not to talk of healthy options. I also have a 30min lunch most days cos that way I can leave early to pick up and do activities with my daughter during the week. So I realised by having my lunch with me just saved the time on going to get something to eat.

It also helps me to not eat junk when I meal prep and plan ahead. So on Sunday's I make 3 different meals and put in the fridge and just pick up every morning on my way out.

To mix it up I could make a base meal ie jollof brown rice or quinoa at weekend then have it with various salads/steamed broccoli/spinach and then maybe fish/grilled chicken depending on what is available. So the base meal is already prepped but the other stuff would take less than 15 mins to make the night before.

I also find healthier meals tend to take less time to prepare. Also you know when you make it yourself there are 'unwanted' additives
That sounds good.

I started mine two weeks ago. I made a huge pot of Jollof rice for the family and some moi-moi with fried plantains and green vegs for them. I knew I would be tempted so while cooking those, decided to make beans porridge. Most of my kids don't like beans anyway, so I decided to make it with everything (tomatoes, pepper, onions, crayfish, seasoning) but without any palm oil. Then placed them in plastic seal-able containers - but before storing them away, added some mixed vegetables (sweetcorn, carrots, green peas, broccoli, and Brussel sprouts). That served as my main lunch. I also take an assortment of fruits with me to nibble on mid-morning (a banana, clementine, green & purple grapes, and an apple). A strawberry yourghurt for dessert shortly after lunch and some roasted cashew nuts to nibble on at tea-time. Also helps keep me awake during boring telephone meetings. cheesy

I know it might sound a lot but I still stick religiously to my lime and lemon concotion every morning + some cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, and a litre of water for breakfast. Kinda explains why I feel ravenous by lunch time (12noon) grin grin

Hello nairalanders,

I want to build a house and intend providing for two wives. How best do you think I should go about it? Do I separate their apartments or just their kitchen? Has anybody found himself in this situation before and how were you able to deal with it?

Your advice would be highly appreciated.

Thank you
Just admit it. The true intention of your thread is to get people on here buy into your idea of having all night threes0mes and f0urs0mes. You kinky man.

With that being the case and your wife is totally understanding of your intention to have an open relationship with her, I hope you do extend the same courtesy of allowing her have great sex with other men by virtue of marrying them too. The four of you can share one bed. i.e: two men and two women. You just need to get your local carpenter construct a larger bed, or line up two double beds together.

That aside, your idea sounds great to me. Your kids will have at least two fathers and two mothers each. They shall never lack parental care / attention.

Don't go into acquiring separate apartments. The rule should be one for all and all for one. If the financial burden will be too much for you to bear, get the second husband chip in. Every Kobo counts.
FamilyRe: My Wife Wants To Buy The Following For The Baby by EfemenaXY: 1:33pm On Dec 21, 2015
NORAD:
My wife went through this thread yesterday, and it wasn't anything near embarrassing for her. Next time when you reply to someone else's thread, try and avoid insulting the op.
If you've got nothing good to say, say nothing at all!
First of all, kindly point out where I insulted you in my post. Secondly, to say your thread is an embarrassing read is putting it mildly.

From the tone of your post and subsequent replies on here, one can safely deduce that you aren't interested in what must be got, but are more interested in cutting corners, even if it means cutting out items that are non-negotiable life-saving essentials (like vaccinations / immunizations / car safety seats, etc) as long as you save a Kobo here and there. Now let's go through your initial lamentation post again:

NORAD:
My wife just handed me this list.
Are you just realizing that she's pregnant and would need items for the delivery of your child? Why would you wait for her to "hand you the list"? Prior to her "handing the list to you", what have you done towards preparing for the birth of your child? What stops you from being proactive - right from the start - in finding out what needs to be acquired? Do you need to be taught how to support your pregnant wife? Or are you a hands-off dad-to-be?

Have you even accompanied your wife to her antenatal classes (assuming she's even registered at one)? Because if you have, none of what she listed on there should come as a surprise to you.

NORAD:
It's a list of what she wants to get for our soon-to-be-born daughter.

My only problem here is that she won't tell me how much each of those items cost, so I don't really know how much to give her.

Can an experienced lady/father in the house please tell me how much to give her for this long list of items? Thank you in advance.
Imagine that. So rather than go find out for yourself, you choose to log on to Nairaland for strangers to help you find out the true prices of items? How do you think people on here found out how much each of the items on your wife's list cost? By logging on to Nairaland to ask others??

We all know the real reason you've come on here is to make sure your wife doesn't "chop" your money. You're determined not to spend over 50K irrespective of what is non-negotiable or not. You come across as a very controlling and stingy man. Next time use birth control (until you're both financially capable of bringing in another child) - at least that won't cost you 50K.
PropertiesRe: £4m Property: Nigeria Vs UK (which One Would You Buy?) by EfemenaXY: 12:48am On Dec 21, 2015
Sagamite:
I would caution both of you with your assumptions.
You have to take serious consideration into what are the drivers for the value appreciation you allude to and understand the likely changes in future.
Prices are impacted by (i) supply, (ii) demand, (iii) lack of information and (iv) price movement expectations.
House prices in the UK are mainly driven by a significant raise in demand due to the globalisation of its demand market. That is, people from all over the world want to buy in the London.
Expected price movement and supply not keeping up with the astonomical demand also play minor parts in UK prices.
House prices in Nigeria are mainly driven by lack of supply, especially of basic standard housing in safe areas and areas with easy commute.
Lack of information and expected price movements also play a minor part in the Nigerian prices.
Efe, as much as you state that UK houses are subject to Boom and Burst Cycles, I will tell you today (and mark my words), Nigerian houses are prime patients for a strictly Burst Festival.
They are overvalued because of lack of transportation infrastructure and basic standard housing supply. They are mediocre quality products being sold at monumental prices.
Would the UK global demand constrict?
Yes, I think so. Because as the citizenry complain about skyrocketing house prices, the government would have to introduce policies to restrict foreign purchase just like Australia has done. But they would have to do it gently to not damage the economy as many people have invested their net worth in property and a crash would cause an economic meltdown (as people lose their wealth). Government would focus of constraining price growth, not reducing prices.
How is the Nigerian Prices likely to change?
Now we have a sane and clean government, hence things are likely to be done properly.
We have an incorruptible President and we have a man called Fashola as Minister for Power, Housing and Works. We also have a competent Amaechi in Transport.
Then we have the Chinese coming in ready to build.
Once we start having good roads, rail and new housing stock, then you would see (with Fashola responsible for these) the change in supply dynamics and accessibility.
Remember Real Estate is the new big thing in Nigeria at present. Housing stock is already being built drastically. This would be accelerated with Fashola in charge and I see all these overpriced properties (that are mostly junk) crashing.
Already, at least 40% of housing stock in VI and Ikoyi axis are vacant because they are just overpriced. Once the supply increases and people can live in Amuwo Odofin or Ilupeju and get to work in VI by rail, you would see this vacancy rate escalated except prices come down.
http://uncova.com/greed-pib-fingered-for-over-60-vacancy-rate-in-ikoyi-housing-market
http://updates.hopefornigeriaonline.com/slump-in-demand-for-highbrow-properties/
Don't believe the hype you hear from Nigerian unreliable fools with their penchance for misinformation that you will recoup the cost of you buying from renting. These houses are not renting well.
Many blocks of flats in Ikoyi, I am told by reliable sources, are just there completely empty because the people that built them are thieves who don't need the immediate cashflow and did not build it on mortgage. Hence they can afford to leave it empty.
So as far as I am concerned, anyone buying properties now in Nigeria at the inflated prices they are advertised at would be losing part of his money in the coming few months as the prices would crash and they would also struggle to rent it out in the short term.
Okay, I get what you're saying and I don't disagree with some of your points - but my outlook is slightly different.

The UK is a developed nation. Nigeria is a developing nation. Housing prices in the UK are closely linked to either upward / downward trends in the economy. Controlling factors such as Inflation Rates, Retail Price Index, Consumer Price Index, etc. are all determining factors. What's the equivalent in Nigeria? Nothing is appropriately monitored there. Does there even exist an equivalent of the Office for National Statistics (OFNS) over there? I had a read of the links you posted but those articles were based mostly on the reporters' opinions. Nothing backed with hard facts and figures, but then again nothing surprising there.

See, my analogy is quite simple. Basic even. With development comes job opportunities, which in turn brings in a lot of potential customers for the housing market in Naija which = a demand for housing. Based on what you say about a changed and cleaner government (which I find hard to believe but let's be optimistic), coupled with the Chinese, expatriates, and foreign investors trickling in - then imminent "progress" should be on the cards, and this should transcend into a surge in people and flocking to major city areas in the hope of acquiring jobs (albeit well-paying jobs), and businesses wanting to cater for high-brow clientèle.

The point(s) you make about transportation and infrastructre are interesting ones, but let's be realistic. How long will it take the government to deliver on it's promises to provide the basics? Take transportation for example - I do not for one second believe an efficient railway can be built an completed within the lifespan of one government in power even if they succeed in running for a second or even third term in office. So until that's up and running, what happens to the expectations for affordable housing?

At the moment, there is a chink in the government's armour and those with a keen eye for detail tap into such situations, milk, make the most of the situation and move on to the next best thing. You didn't address the point I made about transforming that property into a swanky hall of residence for students of wealthy parents. You made some interesting points about a lot of unoccupied properties for rent. Okay. But what about those serving as guest houses / top-end hotels in Abuja prime areas. How do they do it? What or who's to say the same can't be done for this property?

Not all Nigerians are on the breadline, struggling to exist, living solely from hand-to-mouth. There are a lot of them out there living it up with the money to burn. So where else would they burn it if not at exclusively built expensive properties serving as guest houses, etc? I agree the interior of the property you posted looks quite grim to be honest, but like I mentioned in my previous post, it's nothing that a good lick of paint with some imported items from furniture stores over here wont put right.

Finally, you mentioned globalisation being one of the driving factors in pushing up housing prices in the UK. Now if this present Nigerian government is half as good as you say they are, then Nigeria should be heading towards a similar scenario, which in turn should translate into lots of people from all over the world wanting to buy property in Abuja, as they do in London. And if this causes a shortage in supply, then wouldn't it stand to reason that this grossly overpriced property will be snapped up ASAP by foreign investors?

I have nothing against men who take pride in providing for their families. I do have issues with those who do it grudgenly and make the woman feel like shyte while doing so. Such woman need to empower themselves by having their own source of income to cater for the basics at the very least.

As long as she's of sound mind, she has no excuse to go cap-in-hand-a-begging. Especially if she's educated and able-bodied.
