Kashif: manie, A speculator is by no means seeing the stock market as a casino. Gamblers do! There are millions of speculators out there, and they make money.I still do not see anything wrong with not wanting to keep any particular stock beyond three months. All stocks do not move at the same time; timing matters! Being able to buy near valleys and selling near peaks is what am looking at. I don't need the money in January so, I can keep turning the funds there indefinitely if opportunities keep presenting themselves.

There are many investment styles, and none is superior to the other; it is just subjective. I have sub-zero idea about TB BTW undecided.

Thanks again.
Oga Kashif, abeg make we no let our angry grow annoyed... Oga manie forget say everybody pocket no be the same. Abeg no vex.

Oga Manie, not everyone can sacrifice 1 million Naira just to build portfolio na. Some speculators prefer to trade with the money until it gets to N5 million which is not far from possible in the NSE... with faith though...

Apparently the bank officers were trying to dissuade you. Try another branch or bank. First bank accept 100K minimum and they've been wonderful so far.

Chillisauce: What a thread! Nice one everyone.
I have a question, I have a bank account with zenith but I don't have an account officer. is it possible to request online for the treasure bills. Or do I need to be present to sign any document.

I have been trying to reach them on phone and they don't respond to emails.
You don't have to be physically present. You can send a written instruction to your bank if the money you plan to invest is already in your bank account. It's a pity they don't respond to your calls and emails. Keep trying until you are able to get a response. Also, try and ask your bank for the contact details of your account officer including his/her mobile phone number. This will make things a lot more easier for you in subsequent transactions.
InvestmentRe: Zenith Bank Fixed Deposit Interest Rate by Elai147: 4:22pm On Oct 15, 2013
ihedioramma: my man what will be the profit after a month or e.t.c for 100k?
The rates are not fixed and are determined by CBN on every auction. Recently the rates have been between 10% - 11% per annum. For 100k at 10%, the interest will be N2,500 per quarter (3 months). The higher the capital, the better.

ihedioramma: my man what are the risk and how do i play well in tb?
There is zero percent risk on treasury bills because they are backed by the Federal government and CBN. There is a thread for T-bills by oga feelamong. Follow the thread for better understanding.
InvestmentRe: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Elai147: 4:03pm On Oct 15, 2013
In addition to Collinsobinna's contribution, T-bills are considered to have zero risk because they are guaranteed by the FG (CBN) unlike fixed deposits which are not secured depending on the company offering it. For example, I am not sure if those who had FD with the defunct Savannah bank got their money back- maybe not all. Also, those investing in FD with stockbroking firms & Co. may be playing gamble with their monies.

@Chiqudy, you have to consider risk factor safety of your investment capital as well as the timely payment of interest. If you are risk-averse then T-bill is for you otherwise there are other high interest paying investment for those willing to take heavy risk. The lower the risk, the lower the interest rate- that's what you get from T-bills. But if you invest much in T-bills you will definitely smile with no fear of losing your capital.

I have had bad experiences with Fixed deposits. For example, the interest rates are not constant. The bank can offer as high as 11% at the initial stage of investment just to attract customers but they will gradually be reducing the rates subsequently and without your consent. If you complain, they will tell you that rates have fallen and there is nothing you can do apart from moving your funds but then na you lose because they must have traded with your money before paying you the interest. Threaten to sue them and they will show you the part of their Terms and Conditions that says interest rates are subject to change at the Bank’s discretion without prior notice to customers- but they don't tell you this at the start of investment.

princemolak: so which stock will you advise for a short term investment?
I believe in long term and that's what I mainly do. Meanwhile, I sometimes gamble with stocks for short term just to make quick profit. For example, I did some recent trading(short term) with Transcorp and Evansmed. When I go for a stock for short term and the stock is not performing well, I sometimes convert it to long term especially when it is a dividend / bonus paying stock and sometimes I also cut my losses and move on... So the bottom line is- don't trade with money you cannot afford to lose.

Hoping to make good profit within 2 months in any of the above stocks is pure gamble. No one knows when Japaul will rise again. You may want to constantly check its daily traded volume for increment which can be an indication of possible rise from car park. ABC should be good for long term.

Omexonomy: my brother i have done that i filled and signed alot of forms including the (KYC) know ur coustomer form. Durring the period i was given more than five forms to fill including my nepa bill and some other things. But they still tell me thesame story.
The amount of money i have spent in trying to process the for from my broker and the registrar could have fetched me at least 100unit of gtb, 2400unit of transcop, 125 unit of zenith, 25 unit of sky shelter fund.
I GIVE UP.
I can imagine what you have gone through. Maybe you should consider changing your stockbroker. Some of them are only interested in services that will fetch them money(buy and sell).

manie: Can you mention the names of some of these registrars.
Wema Registrars: after a very long period they finally replied my email but said my processed transfer form was never submitted to them by my broker and thus, they could not do anything. Africa prudential registrars and City Securities (Registrars) Limited have never replied my emails on E-dividend issues. Another one I can remember is the defunct Oceanic registrars.

As for First registrars, they frustrated me with their request for bankers confirmation. After all said and done we were still heading nowhere until God used a woman to help me. She listened to my story and immediately asked for my preferred bank for the E-dividend payment. After 2 days they credited with over N100,000 (in total) of unclaimed dividends. Meanwhile, I have been receiving some dividend warrants from them but didn't know I had unclaimed ones. First registrars could not explain why they sent some dividend warrants and held back some apart from their usual stories of wrong address (the same address where they have been sending me dividend warrants). Zenith registrars explained that they do not send dividend warrants that is more than a certain amount (about N50k or so) by post. But they never informed me of this until I asked and found out I had unclaimed dividends with them as well.

Before the stock market crash, I have sent E-dividend forms by registered post to all my registrars and not even one could register me for E-dividend payment. I did everything they requested including taking the forms to my bank for endorsement. In 2010, I repeated the process but this time I also sent emails (with e-dividend forms attached) notifying them that I had sent the hard copies of the forms to their offices by registered post. Still, nothing happened and I kept receiving dividend warrant by post. This year, I repeated the process for the third time after SEC warned registrars concerning the level of unclaimed dividends and mandated investors to embrace E-dividend payment. This time it worked and I was able to register with most registrars. There is a possibility that if not for SEC's intervention, some of us will still be having difficulty in registering.

guru25: Please when is the next bidding. My bank disappointed me. GTBank Account officers are just dull, they don't reply emails from their clients. They don't expect me to be at the Bank for transactions that can be done over email.
Should be 2 weeks from the date of the last auction (23-10-2013). So disappointing that most banks do not respond to emails regularly. It's a very big shame.

kufreabasio: Hello guys. Can somebody please help me with this? I placed an order for T-bill worth 520k some 2 days ago at Stanbic IBTC. I just got an alert that 506,646 has been debited from my account and the balance of about 13k given to me. Is the 13k supposed to be the only interest i am getting on the 520k investment for 91 days? Please explain cos this is weekend and I cant get to my banker until Monday. Thanks.
T-bills are sold at a discount. The difference between what you paid for it and its worth at maturity represents your interest for that 91-day period.

It is possible if you already have a stockbroking account. If you don't, you will need to register with a stockbroking firm but you will need to do that with some good amount of money. There may be some firms that require at least N50,000 for you to open an account with them.

janykute: You guys should try and activate the E-dividend mandate and save yourselves this stories.
There are registrars that purposely refuse to register some of us for E-dividend payment. Till date, I still receive dividend warrants by post from some companies while others pay directly to my bank account. There is nothing I have not done to ensure I am registered for E-dividend with some registrars but it just won't work and eventually I got tired of repeating the E-dividend registration process. Sometimes, these registrars know what they are doing. Evidence to support my claim is in the recent complain by SEC mandating investors to register for E-dividend because they are worried about the increasing figures of unclaimed dividends.

veeco vee: i mailed uba registrar about the long awaited dividend warrant. But their reply was that it must clock 6months b4 they ll reissue another warrant. Did they purposely withold warrant with up to 5 figure amount? anyone in same shoe?
There are some registrars that usually withhold dividend warrant that are up to N50k and above (e.g Zenith registrars). You must go to their office to collect your warrant except if you have an active E-dividend mandate but I am not sure of UBA reg.

foandt: Whaoo! God bless you and your experience sir. You have opened my understanding cos the 1st e-dividend forms I processed around 2011 were not attended to by all registrars until when I went to then GT registrars last year that I was told to process my transfer form through my broker to cscs whereby by signature specimen will be confirmed to them. Again I ported from a broker to another around 2005 (using same CHN no) meanwhile my former broker was strict in signing transfer form while the latter was not (online) I later observed that my bonus issues were credited to the former account which I had closed, after much stress and letters to cscs I discovered that registrars have my signature specimen with the former and hence my account with them was credited. But while processing this e-dividend for the 2nd time, I took my time to visit my current broker to process my transfer forms through CSCS which the did and gave me a copy of the acknowledged copy @ CSCS, so with this I stated my 2nd trip of e-dividend and so far, I have been receiving direct credit into my savings account by most registrars except Union Registrars that sent a cover note to my e-div form requesting for "your signature specimen is not held in this office. Kindly get ....." and "your cscs statement is required". I will fulfill all their requirements next week. I hope pp will gain one thing or the other from what my oga has shared with us. Thank you all!
Thanks a lot for sharing.

foandt: Please sirs/mas kindly help me to solve this problem. My e dividend form was returned by Union registars that I should produce bankers confirmation of my signature, date the account was opened etc and my cscs statement. Meanwhile I had gone to my broker to send my signature specimen to all d registrars which had been done and I have a copy. I have been receiving e div from other registrars with this process except Union registrars. What do I do considering d cost and time. Thank u all
What was the reason they gave for the returned form? They cannot just return your form and ask for CSCS statement and the rest. The common reason is usually when there are irregularities in your signature. If this is the case, they will ask you to provide bankers confirmation on your signature which usually includes the date the account was opened. This should be at no cost. I am not sure why they are requesting for your CSCS statement. It may be that they do not have your name/account in their register. When you purchase a stock from the secondary market, your stockbroker will usually send the processed transfer form which will serve as the source document. Some brokers delay in sending this document and some may not even send. I had a similar case where the processed transfer form was never sent to my registrars and at such they could not processed my E-dividend mandate. So please check to know if any of the above applies to your case.
