gosj: Thanks Sir! So no need to use my Profile name on the bank teller?
I have never used profile name. Meristem always advise that you use your Meristem or CSCS account number as payment reference. Even if you forgot to use a payment reference, the most important thing is that you send them an email stating your account number (your meristem a/c No or CSCS a/c No ), amount paid, date of transaction and the account number (Meristem's bank account number) into which the money was paid. Alternatively, you can just scan and send the receipt to them by email.

gosj: How do you make deposits into your account @ Meristem thro bank deposits? Do you pay in using your Meristem account number on the bank teller or your meristem profile name? Thanks!
You can use your Meristem account number as payment reference but when notifying them by email, you should put your Meristem account number as the Subject of your email. This is exactly what I do. You can also use online transfers.

feelamong: I have shares in a so called big and a small house....na the same thing..

Stockbrokers are generally lousy maily due to the way they are set up to operate...one man has to do the trading on the floor...

for me i jus try to find who the exact person that goes to the floor of the exchange is and make friends with him...once in a while arrange something for him from your loot.. grin

once you win him on ur side he will go the extra mile for you! dazall!!
This your method no bad at all. But how you take sure say na the main person wey dey go trading floor be dat? Because some brokers sabi make mouth die...
InvestmentRe: Do Stockbrokers Have Seniority Rating On The Nigerian Stock Exchange? by Elai147: 3:56pm On Nov 29, 2013
In my opinion, I think "Size" plays a very important role here. Why do you think some stockbroking firms demand millions of Naira just to open an account whereas you can open a stockbroking account with as low as N50,000 in some other firms? e be like say levels dey pass levels for that industry. Even within the same stockbroking firm, there is still favouritism in the execution of mandates. Just like what happens in the banking industry, no stockbroking firm wants to show the slightest sign of incompetency to a client whose portfolio is worth N100 Million or more. They will definitely reply your emails promptly and execute your mandates first before attending to the ordinary investor's mandate.

debostar: Cheap things are not always good.Morgan capital group my have dropped down their stockbroking fees, their services is absolutely rubbish compare to other stockbroking firm like meristem securities. They do not respond to emails or acknowledge your orders or mandate. If you are thinking of making a choice between morgan and meritrade, you better try meristem securities.
I am not canvassing for meritrade but I am using both at the moment.
Thanks a lot for this info. Madam Mercy have you had similar issues with them? Those that have ported to Morgan capital, please kindly comment and let us know how good/bad their services are.

miftpulse: I placed a mandate to have all my shares in transcorp sold since Monday but my stockbroker has been unsuccessful. please does anybody have a clue :-
Did you use a sell limit order or you asked them to sell at market price? Because in a fast moving trade like Transcorp, it is better to place your order at market price. I waited up to 3 or 4 days before I could sell part of my Transcorp shares.

9free: My Oga, I have been pondering on this for quite some time. I pray it does not happen but be that as it may I have decided that from March 2014 I start converting 70% of my Assets to cash(Dollars not Naira) just in case. I had also wanted to diversify into some Real Estate(Flipping of Land) but the thought and fear of the bolded scared the hell out of me.
timothy001: @Elai147 Let Assume 2015 the Country Split,How would this Affect Investment?
walcolm: If the country goes to war, your investment has to wait until peace returns. That could be any number of years
If the country splits as part of the peace returning, then you will have to approach the government of the country you go with as a citizen to redeem the investment
All in all there will be years of waiting with no guarantees
It is the real estate investment that scares me the most. Normally, international boundaries should not prevent foreign citizens from owning properties in other countries but let's hope this will be the case in our country if it should split up. If the split does not happen peacefully one will have to wait for the dust to settle before thinking of which government to approach for your investment as Walcolm rightly stated. But I am sure there will be interventions from other nations, the dust will eventually settle and everything should fall into place.

jposuagwu: My brother,

You are one of the people I have great respect for both here and on SMN. But am surprised the way you have been very bullish on Oando completing the COP deal Nov 30 without caution. I spoke with a Management staff of Oando (one of the few who are in the know about the COP deal) - even though he was non committal in his response (primarily because of he feared Toronto Stock Exchange may charge the coy for insider trading, he was not as bullish as you sound here about Nov 30 deadline. He was only bullish the deal will be concluded but not bullish about Nov 30. I understand Oando still has a window to extend the date of closure of the deal.
9free: Noted.
Okay na...

ucheson2: There is no need for panic sell your oando, the closure date for the cop deal has been extended to mid next year. Remember the year is about to end which means audited result is about to come oando will pay dividend. For meoo I still dey this bus, I'm not selling yet. Those that are selling well done. Let the price can come down the more to enable me load more and more, may be I will be able to acquire the volume I had earlier planed before cop is completed. Because it will be completed soon even before the closure date.

Moneysage: @Tassembly: u are very correct. GTBs internet banking spares the excess COT. And @qizick: which GTB branch accepts 100k? Even at that, do they allow u bid?

@Elai147: As 2015 approaches, what do you think about 364-day bills and the Nigerian political climate?

@Ikemefunam: I suggest you develop the courage to bid by urself. I have followed GTBs bid before and I wasn't satisfied with the rate I got.. BTW, it seems everyone is only talking about First bank. I have used Fidelity and their service is great.
Bros I do not invest in 364 days bills as I may regularly need to move funds from Tbills to stock market and vice versa. Besides, if inflation moves higher than or closer to the return on your investment and remain sustained, it lowers the value of your investments.

As for 2015, there is a general believe that presidential election, in particular, has a way of affecting money market and stock market. But what I do is to make sure I invest the safe- diversifying (estate, money market, stock market, etc) and also keeping an eye on political headlines because I no fit shout. I think this method will work no matter who wins the election. The only thing I fear is the presumption by some people that the country may split come 2015. I wonder what effect this will have on investments.
InvestmentRe: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Elai147: 2:36pm On Nov 26, 2013
collinsobinna: @oga elai:please be honest.from recent transactions, how long does first bank take to credit interest from Tbills exactly.and is their rate for primary bid same as others? Then the secondary from them, does it take time too for the interest to be credited?
First bank usually delay interest payment but recently I have been receiving my interest from them within 3 days. Their rate is not the same as CBN stop rate or other bank rates. I have never bought from secondary market via First bank. In my opinion, First bank is very okay for Tbills investment.

Mpeace :
I was thinking of buying more of Oando, but from what I've seen from the above posts and current trend @ NSE it appears buying more @ this time could be a bad decision. Going by the current trend, the impression is that the COP deal may not be completed by 30th as earlier thought, how else do we explain the massive quest by most investors to offload their shares just a few days to the conclusion of the deal. Hmm I don dey fear o. Maybe I should also consider selling the little I have.
Short term profit taking, perhaps.
InvestmentRe: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Elai147: 10:47pm On Nov 25, 2013
Investors anxiously wait for the COP deal to be sealed as end of the month draws near. Please anyone with useful info/rumour should not hesitate to post it here. Meanwhile, "bold investors" will not be easily shaken out of the trade should the deal not get sealed by the deadline. My prayers are with Oando..

it's just that i'm at a point in life where i can afford to save. i dont want to just bury money in the bank

I think i like Meristem. i dont have the energy to pester stockbrokers with endless calls
The best thing for you to do is to read some books. There is a new thread by Stockbull in the investment section (Business/investment Book Directory by stockbull). There are links to E-books that you can download and enjoy. This will enable you make investment decisions yourself. To be very successful in this trade, you have to be the CEO of your investment portfolio and make decisions yourself. This doesn't mean you should not seek advice when you need one. Meanwhile, there are other safe but less profitable investment like Treasury bills in case you are scared of losing your capital because that is the truth- in stock market you can lose your capital. So please be sure you know what you are doing and don't put all your money in stock market. Hope you find this useful.
InvestmentRe: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Elai147: 11:27am On Nov 21, 2013
Akinmail: Why is it that some stocks have a PE RATIO running into negative. Does that mean they made loses the previous year. Are they safe for longterm buying.
Look at it from the equation: P/E, if the company has been losing money, earnings (E) will be negative and when you have negative earnings that means the P/E ratio will be negative. However, you don't usually see it reported as negative because in finance it is not acceptable, the same way it is impossible to see a negative stock price. so the negative P/E can be reported as N/A, NIL, etc. So if you are buying into such a company with a long term view it means you are hoping things will turn around for the company and that they may go back to profitability.

Mpeace :
I'm just imagining a #100k invesment in nestle. Only about 80 shares. Chai these guys badt o. I'd rather go for Oando since its only just about to start the upward journey. I dey fear Transcorp, since it might take some years before they start paying dividends(given the number and amount of loan they have taken, and the fact that they are also planning on new investments) some may become impatient and begin to shed their shares leadin to a fall in price. Or what do you think?
You are right-it may take long before Transcorp will start paying dividends- but in the meantime you can use it for capital appreciation if you are not ready to take your long term position yet. Bonuses may also not be likely any time soon as they already have too many shares in issue (though share buy-back may be a possibility). It requires a great deal of boldness and caution to benefit greatly from Oando. A lot of investors here are taking positions in this stock in anticipation of the completion of COP deal, hopefully by the end of the month/year. Investment in the stock market is all about hope regardless of whether we are going for short, mid or long term. We can only pray for God's guidance.

Rawdeal: Hello guys. I intend to start investing in the stock market as soon as possible and i need help. i just started working so i want to save as much as i can while i can. i want to start off with N100,000

Please i need help with
1. A good stockbroking firm or stock broker
2. Shares i should invest in

Nestle looks so tempting but i obviously cant afford anything substantial. Unity bank cannot get any worse unless the bank crashes and i want to buy transcorp as soon as yesterday or else i can see myself regretting very soon. i want OANDO also but I cant tell how long it will take for them to rise again. i'll invest another 150k by March next year. God willing......and if i don't become materialistic

I recently started following the market but i'm very interested. Please advise
Only invest money you can afford to lose. Try meristem (www.meritrade.com). What you need now is to grow your capital so that you can take long term positions in the future. You can still join the Transcorp ride and make profit. Oando is also on the move, if u have the courage you may join the train too but be at alert to know when to exit these trades. This is just my opinion- you have the final decision. Good luck.

feelamong: Hmmm... do not fully agree with ur take!

BAs are goodf investment out lets and they also pay you interst upfront... i do this with my former bankers just that the interest they give now is not good enough but at 11% for 91days.. i think its OK.

I also think that all the banks for now are very safe to do business with and as such no one should take any customer for granted. Infact the last CBN report only stated the facty that the said 8 banks are taking on more risk than their capital can carry and as such have been advised to raise uop their capital..

why would one go for short term and go thru the rigours of sending in rollover instructions when you do not need the money in the short term? moreover interest are projected to fall in the future so its betytter to lock up my funds for one year at a good interest rate.

But in all I prefer Tbills to other fixed income although am not too cool with its liquidity!!thats why i always go for the 90days...but i will definitely explore the Ecobank BA option now that it has been mentioned..
I will also explore this BA with Ecobank but is it risk-free? I prefer short term because I may need access to my money before 1 year. Anything can happen in Naija. I am not sure what happened to those investors who had long term FD with defunct Savannah bank. If they actually lost their capital then most of their victims should be those with long term FD.
