When they complete the course, they are given a loan with which they will start a business and made to sign an undertaking that they will not return to the streets.

C) Return: Those who choose to return are transported to their state of origin. The state government is usually informed ahead of time (although I know of 3 instances in which their state governments claimed that they were not informed) so that they can make arrangements to cater for the people. Most of the people who have chosen to return are from the northern part of the country (note: they chose to return).

I think those deported are those who refused to learn a skill.

For the purpose of analysis, the link you provided claim the distance by ROAD from Lagos to Kano is about 1000km. How can the distance from Lagos to Kano by ROAD be 1000km when the distance of the RAIL TRACKS from Lagos to Kano is 1126km? Shouldn't the road distance be farther than rail tracks?

Assuming the distance is even correct, the arithmetic with which you arrived at 12hrs or 15hrs is very simplistic. If we do the same arithmetic for the trains travelling at about 45km per hour (maximum speed of the narrow guage railway is about 64km per hour) and for a distance of 1126km the train will arrive its destination in 25hrs. If we add the same extra 3hours for stoppages, it gives 28hrs.

Common sense should tell you the rail tracks are not exactly laid on the same road that traverses Lagos-Kano, and there would be variations in distance, as attempts will be made for the train tracks to link certain cities. A straight line is the shortest distance between two points.

FYI, A mile is roughly 1.6km. 28mph is roughly 44kmph. That report said the train arrived kano 6hrs 30 mins late

Sincere 9gerian: There are now 3 options for those willing to travel from Lagos to Kano: air, road or RAIL. Air transport is out of the reach of most Nigerians so the COMPETITION really is between road and rail transport.

Now lets compare road and rail transport:

A bus journey from Lagos to Kano costs roughly N5,000. And it lasts about 25 – 28 hours (Average from Premium Times)

Now lets bring in the safety factor. Obviously, it is far far safer to travel by rail than by road.

the 29 hours is official, by the time you add almost certain issues/delays with logistics et al, you might be on the journey for another extra 5 hours or more (29 + 5)=34 hours.

BTW, i think it is more suitable for the train to be used in ferrying goods, that is the positive angle to this.

We all know that several factors determine the cost of road construction and these factors vary from one geographical location to another. Even in the same state, the cost may vary from place to place. Factors such as soil structure, number of lanes, design of the road, number of bridges, drainages type and size, pedestran walk ways,etc all eventually add up to the final cost of the road. Most of these factors, vary from place to place, even in the same state.

The East-west road for instance is about over 338km dual carriage road, with about 37 bridges and is being constructed at the cost of about N360 billion (variation that has taken due to delayed completion since 2006 when the project was initiated at the cost N200billion).

It will be deceitful and pure mischief to now compare the East-west road (with 37 bridges and topography in the swamps of the Niger Delta) per km cost of construction with inner city roads in places like Enugu or Abeokuta.
