truthsayer009: But that's also a problem too, pushing your spouse to make the immigration move can hurt the family savings & income, so you need to be sure all that glitz and glamour is worth sacrificing your likelihood. Also stagnation needs be defined in this context too, does stagnation mean not moving abroad like everyone else or not making enough money or not moving up in your career. For example, for a Doctor, moving abroad will be upping his/her career, he or she will benefit more, but for a business man with multiple streams like Obi Cubana, moving abroad is a regression. Also, there is more to life than career or making more money etc. A quiet less stressful life even though lesser income is ideal for some people. It is not all about earning more money, driving more fancy cars, building modern house in a choice area etc I just prefer the lesser life - an average tokunbo car, stays in average area in my town, closer to my extended family, less stress etc. Ka ro aso mo idi, ka ro idi mo aso, koko nipe ki idi ma ti gbofo…….. either we tie a wrapper to the waste or will roll the waist to the wrapper, the most important thing is that we shouldn’t walk naked. Whether you want to japa or stay back in nigeria, the bottom line is to be able to earn enough to feed our family so that we won’t be a burden to others and nuisance to the society at large. |

LollySeaSide: It depends on what you mean by "settling down". Men are not losing interest in settling down. Men are wary of setting themselves up for untimely death. If by settling down you mean marriage, then know that a man can settle down and live his life to the fullest without getting married to a woman. Marriage is unfortunately overrated and entitled ladies are making it even worse. I've lived two parts of my life; the first 33 years and the last 5 years. I can tell you for free that the last five years have been nothing short of awesome, peaceful, organised and worr-free. You know why? You guessed right! There isn't a woman in life except my mother who has always been in my life. I may get married again but that will be much much later in my life.
I sent this question to a friend of mine and that's the reply he sent me.
I hope I can still summon the courage to marry. Hmmmmmmmm |

They just have this belief that life is easier & sweeter abroad, they also want to be in an environment where they can take pictures in the snow to pepper their friends who are still in Nigeria yet to travel. They also want to be able to tell other family members that they have made it & gone above them.

Acidosis: Hmm.. Entrepreneurship is largely about solving problems. So relocating to a developed country from a developing country to solve a problem is like trying to get a Ph.D. in a primary school. The problems you'll probably want to solve in those countries are either non-existent or the regulations required in such industries are way too much to handle, especially for a migrant. If you dislike the 9-5 idea or the idea of doing two to three jobs, it's definitely not a wise move to relocate. However, ideas as we all know are immaterial so it is also wise to study the Nigerian environment as many businesses don't survive the first 5 years.
By the way, your wife's insistence to relocate is not new oo. Women are always the set of humans doing the "pushing." Lol For people who are simply concerned about their kids, it may not be a bad move to let go of certain things. However, for those who are deeply vested in their entrepreneurial growth, my advice would be to THINK and...do your research, my brother. Thanks bro. It is even far more than being an entrepreneur. I just don’t like the stress that comes with working working and working. Abeg I am tired. Have been running and hustling all my life and the small one wey remain na to enjoy am no matter how small it is. I can’t use the remaining years in my life to pick up a fresh/new hustling again by going abroad. Ti a ba fi ogun odun pinle were, ojo wo gan lo fe wo oja? People will think you are crazy and weird if you have opportunity to relocate and refused. You don’t blame them, the country is hard and they just want to escape it. So I understand their plight but for me, I don’t have the zeal to go again. Not in my 30’s anymore. Had that flare for it in my early 20’s but I am not stable in nigeria. I have a wife and kids, have a house and work not bad. So why should I throw this stability away to go and start afresh? Don’t have that strength and time again abeg. People are very crazy with the japa stuff. I know friends and families who have sold everything to relocate. One just told me last week he is going to UK for studies why wife defendant. He has/had a Feedmill here. Producing animal feeds but he is selling all just to go and school and become an employee back. It’s crazy but it is what it is. Nigerians from my experience are not good entrepreneurs as we think. All the we are born hustlers blah blah blah is just because of the hardship and no option. Given an average option, the average nigeria will ditch business and jump for a job. |

Acidosis: While it is true that Nigeria has a deficit of infrastructure required for businesses to thrive, the fact remains that Nigeria (Africa in general) has the highest number of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial ventures in the world.
Do not let anyone lie to you. It is easier to run a business in Nigeria than in a typical developed country. How many Nigerians have you seen leave this country to start a business in the UK, the US, or Germany? You practically wouldn't see anyone. The best you'll find is a few people making YouTube videos as side hustle.
While most of these (Nigerian-based) businesses are "mediocre" and micro-scale startups, the potential to grow even bigger is obviously undeniable but more often than not, people don't have the knowledge to grow a business in this part of the world. It is not always about infrastructural deficit. In fact, right now, electricity has improved in some parts of the country. At least, in my area, it is now 23-24 hrs/day.
Are you not surprised to know that despite the high number of entrepreneurial startups in Nigeria and Africa, majority of Nigerians (if not all) who travel abroad do not have the courage to start a business?? This includes people who closed their businesses here to fund their travel expense. One would expect that when they relocate, the same business would be replicated and even developed further in a saner clime but this is not always the case due to knowledge gap.
If infrastructural deficit is the problem, why are Nigerians in the UK, Germany, and Canada not growing businesses to employ other Nigerians? Why are Nigerians in the US not competing with Mark Zuckerberg? Do you still want to blame "NEPA" and "bad roads" after relocating to the UK?
The problem is knowledge gap. Gbam!!!!’n Inspector Acid…. I salute you. This is the reason I don’t want to relocate to abroad. My wife has been pestering me that since it is business I like, I can continue it there but I know it is a big big big trap. If I dear go there, I will be so hit with bills that I will throw away my business dream and be scrambling for menial jobs up and down. Before I will become steady, upgrade by going to school while still hustling, trying to pay off house mortgage etc. 10/15 years would have gone from my life if not 20 and that is totally game over. Just to wait why I get closer and closer to my grave and panshy |

Very dangerous political statement My brother, all these churches of a thing are something else. The church I attend at home, the pastor always call my wife regularly when he got close to me and knows the job I do. Always chatting with me regularly and calling. In my own little way, I do support the church and get him things once in a while but it seems it is not enough. He feels I can do more than what I am doing. 2 years ago, yahooboys and forex guys(these guys are still coded scammers anyway) took over the church. Started donating in millions and the pastor started using them to boast. One of his PA Abi papa’s boys told me papa has forgotten we the married and working class because we all struggle to finance the church activities and programs. He doesn’t call me again nor my wife. During my child’s naming, he barely used 20th a to finish the program. It was as if he was forced to come sef. A year lasted, most of those boys crashed, forex flopped etc. He has nobody to turn to than start doing damage control with us but No, I am long gone. Didn’t give him the attention he needed. Only do what I can afford the church and that’s all. One thing I noticed about most of these pastors is that they are very envious and jealous of any member doing better than them. To them, they have to be the best why members follow. You better not be richer, use better car and house than your pastor else he would be using you as an example of a member that God has blessed but not using it for God. My pastor and family traveled to Dubai for vacation. Everybody was happy that papa enjoyed Dubai. He came back and started telling stories about how Dubai is beautiful blah blah blah while the members were quiet listening to his stories. They love that. That attention. Everybody must focus on them and what they say. No any other person or member. Sent his 2 kids to one of the best secondary schools in Nigeria - I think America school or so that will make it easy to further in US. The kids speak fluent phonetic English. That is what they want. To have the best. Early this year he was complaining bitterly about how members are not turning up for a fund raising in the church for a project they wanted to do. Started saying despite the big big cars parked at the car park, we are not contributing enough. In my mind I was like, must it always be about you and your church? Must it? |

anuofGod: You're still asking. I finished NYSC in August. My boyfriend got me a shop The money I saved from allowee and the one my parents and brother gave me, I put everything into fabric selling business.
My boyfriend also finished NYSC with me. He studied architecture, he already learnt it before going to higher institution, so he's very very very good at it. His PPA boss gave him all his projects to supervise, to draw and even attend board meeting on a federal government project for the man. Long story short, after NYSC, no job He applied for job, none is forthcoming One day he told me he wants to be selling beans, I said no way, after calculating the cost and capital, I said moimoi elewe (leaf moimoi) is better. We started looking for space by main road, we no see, everyone was saying there's no space. I convinced him to come and use the front of my shop I learned how to wrap moimoi in leaves from my mum when I was very young. That's how we started, we spent about 35k getting big pot, tire rim coal pot, turning stick, portion spoon, ororo, maggi, leaves, half bag of charcoal etc Now we're making sales, even though it's not that huge but alhamdulilah. Sometimes when it's 6pm and we still have plenty moimoi, I'll take it to the main junction of the express in a cooler and shout to passersby to come and buy moimoi elewe. I've only sold fabrics twice but we sell moimoi everyday. Oga was feeling ashamed when he first told me about it. But I didn't see anything to be ashamed of coz he isn't lazy and he's a really good guy So, uncle you can use morning and afternoon to learn the tech stuff someone told you here Then in the afternoon -evening, fry Akara and sell, and make sure you keep money everyday. If you make 2k, keep 1k, if you make 3k, keep 2k as savings. The remaining ones you didn't put in savings is your running capital, it should be use in getting what you need for business e.g more beans or more ororo when you have small left, or charcoal. And don't spend the profits for your personal bills for like 2 weeks so you don't cripple the business from start. That means you should get foodstuffs at home while getting what you need to start up the business and don't go on buying excessive things or things that are not really needed. Buying in few quantities, you can later get a place where you can buy stuffs at cheaper rate. May God be with us all and bless our hustle. You can call me sisi oni moimoi or sisi alaso Now …….. this is the type of Lady we have been crying about. A hustler with her bf. Not the one that will abandon him and monkey-branch to a ready made guy. You are the old fashion type lady like our mums. I only hope we still have more of you around. |

PNomsule: What many don't know is that, excess supply of money does not neccessarily means everyone will go for bread, cars or consumption purposes. Progressive Capitalists will channel more of it to production and that is why a wise wealthy man once said, if you take away all my wealth, I will bounce back. Invariably, if you give people who only think consumption when money is handed them, in no distant time, will return broke. Of course, consumers will return broke. Unfortunately, most humans are consumers so we will be back to ground zero again and people start calling for printing more money again which would be consumed in the future anyway. |

PNomsule: I am really just curious as to "why can't we just print more money and solve the poverty problem in the country?"
Terms like "inflation" and the "devaluing of the naira" are the usual buzz answers to that question. Also, people give the example that if we were to print more money and just give everyone N5,000,000 for example, then everyone would go out and buy things, thus making "THINGS" more scarce and in short supply and hence driving up the prices of things (simple demand/supply economics). But herein lies the catch for me... With TRUE unemployment rate somewhere around 33% in the country, if DEMAND for "THINGS" rose, then I would think that companies would WANT to hire more people and build more processing plants to keep up with demand and raise their profits. So, the influx of cash (printed money) would seem to solve the unemployment problem.
Again, we have agencies that regulates pricing in the economy: PPPRA, Price Control Board (Ministry of Commerce) etc, with those, can't the likely over pricing of commodities (THINGS) be controlled and gazetted to avoid the story of "too much money chasing fewer goods"?
In the final analysis, a robust and health competitive economy would have been created and underemployment issues largely solved.
Economists and Analysts lets discuss? Let me come from the angle of price control. Let’s assume you give all citizens 5m each and price control for all goods are activated. It will take like 10,000 Nigerians holding 5m each to buy up most lands in nigeria at the rate of 500k per plot assuming price is controlled. What happens to the millions of people left? Who have 5m at hand and also wishes to have Atleast a plot? Corruption sets in. Bribing, lobbying starts which results in more money chasing fewer goods …..inflation. If it is not bread, it will be car, bags of rice and palm oil, Garri etc |
