Your problem is that of confining the word confraternity to the wrong associations it has in the Nigerian context. The word confraternity has been variously defined. The Oxford Dictionary, for example, defines confraternity as "a brotherhood, especially with a religious or charitable purpose. The Webster's Dictionary corroboratively defines confraternity as "a society or body of men united for some purpose, or in some profession; a brotherhood." Collins English Dictionary similarly defines confraternity as "a group of men united for some particular purpose, especially Christian laymen organized for religious or charitable service; brotherhood". Also, thefreedictionary.com defines confraternity as "An association of persons united in a common purpose or profession".

Jonathan okays national confab *Concludes consultations, SNC to take off next year

Written by Taiwo Adisa, Abuja
Sunday, September 30, 2012

PRELIMINARY consultations scheduled to lead to the convocation of a National Conference were said to have been wrapped up in the outgone week, as President Goodluck Jonathan was said to have given the green light on the planned confab. Investigations by Sunday Tribune revealed that President Jonathan had personally led some of the secret consultations with leaders of ethnic nationalities. Only a few of the consultations were held in the open, as it emerged that the president had also constituted a team that would midwife the conference.

A source said on Saturday that contrary to reports in a section of the media, the presidency was actually spearheading talks with some leaders of ethnic nationalities for the purpose of identifying the need for the much talked about national conference. According to findings, the conference is scheduled to start early next year, while the steering committee is now fine-tuning the modalities for the planned confab. Besides a number of consultations that took place in Abuja, it was gathered that a number of top presidency hands were deployed in Lagos, Kano, Kaduna as well as the South-East and South-South states to directly hold talks with leaders of many of the ethnic nationalities. Through the series of consultations, it was learnt that the consensus of opinion is that the country should provide a platform for the hitherto silent majority to ventilate their views on how to enhance Nigeria's unity and also ensure peaceful co-existence.

A source close to the arrangement said that the president had concluded on the need to ensure that Nigerians ventilate their views within the democratic space while the fears of various ethnic groups were also addressed. It was learnt that while the issues to be discussed at the confab would be moderated towards enhancing national unity, the government was willing to hear Nigerians out. Said a source in the know: "A lot has been said about the need for national conference or even the Sovereign National Conference and the president, being a listening leader, has actually consulted with many leaders from across this country. "There came the feeling that some Nigerians think the National Assembly may not really ventilate their views on devolution of powers, federalism and derivation, and that such issues are better thrashed out at the level of a national confab where people can truly agree on what they see as fundamentals." It was also learnt that the outcome of the planned confab would be handed over to the National Assembly, which would then prepare some bills in line with some agreed issues. A source said that the confab may last for only six months. In case the national confab could not complete its assignment before the completion of the ongoing constitution amendment exercise, a source said that the government would prepare separate bills for legislative action by the National Assembly.

saheedat: @ Erelu Y, if our dams are well maintain and over flow did not happen, will their be need to be releasing water into d river at intervals and will this disaster happen?
From the picture can you tell me what is left of the natural pathway or in deed the bed of the Niger River? This disaster will happen for as long as people decide to senselessly erect structures on the very path if not the very bed of the river! Why would any sensible person invade and encroach the path of one of the largest rivers in Africa. It's simply lawlessness.

Saudi Arabia immigration officials yesterday denied Nigeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Bunu and other consular officials, access to the detained Nigerian female pilgrims at the King Abdulazeez International Airport, Jeddah... the Saudi immigration officials refused to recognize his official status as a full-fledged ambassador representing Nigeria in Saudi Arabia... But the Saudi immigration officials openly humiliated all of them without recourse to the status as Nigeria’s official representation in that country”...

vivian chinaza: Being an independent woman doesn't automatically make you a man! And it really pains me when women blame their inability to be a real woman on "independence!" A woman should be a woman anytime any day! Being independent is just an added advantage!

@ op, I'm gonna be as blunt as possible...... The worst thing that can ever happen to a man is to marry a woman who can't cook or keep a house together! A woman is supposed to be a home maker! Forget this love matter.......na u go tire by the time it starts frustrating you! This is not yankee or Jand! This is Africa for goodness sake! Here in Naija, men come home from their hectic jobs to a delicious home made meal prepared by their lovely wives, not order for chinese food joor! Don't even think of house helps cos its gonna get worse, and the lineage passes over to ur kids (girls) cos a snake begets a snake! If she can learn fine, in fact if she truly loves you and she know what marriage is all about she shouldn't wait for you to say something before she starts making an effort! But if she doesn't want to make an effort pls drop her like she is hot!

In fact, she is even missing a lot! Oh yes! She is missing that innermost joy that every woman feels when the man she love eats her food and almost chop the plate join cos he enjoys her meal!

Nigerian Drainage System
It's not about Nigerian drainage system at all. It's about respecting nature and not building structures right on the path of the Niger River. Structures were erected almost right inside the river. It sounds and looks as if some wished the river dried up completely so they can build their structureS on the very bed of the Niger River. IDI0TS.

Jodesky: Question?
Was the flooding in Edo caused by encroachment on the River Niger path?

Lesson
Dont rush into hasty conclusions
Am not entirely sure what, if anything, you are high on! This thread is about the Flooding In Kogi and you're ranting about flooding in Edo. That said, Nigeria is a LAWLESS country where both the leaders and the led break the law with impunity. I don't know about the Edo flooding and haven't seen any pictures from there. Nonetheless, like elsewhere in Nigeria the question are as follows: what is the drainage system in Edo like? What do people do with their wastes (dump them into the drainage as it is elsewhere across the country)? Are town planning rules enforced and followed by the citizenry? Are flood defences properly put in place? We're not talking about Tsunami or Hurricane Katrina here, are we?

This is not about rushing into hasty conclusions. It's about telling it as it is: YOU FLAUNT THE LAW AND BUILD ON THE PATH OF A RIVER, IT COMES ONE DAY AND WASH AWAY YOUR BUILDING. PERIOD.

I am not reacting to what this guy has said and I sincerely apologise for this. But, ladies and gentlemen, behold the above picture which demonstrates how Fellow Nigerians think they can INVADE and ENCROACH upon the Niger River path and get away with it. River Niger is the third-longest river in Africa, exceeded only by the Nile and the Congo River (also known as the Zaïre River), it is definitely the principal river of western Africa, running through Guinea, Mali, Niger, on the border with Benin and then through Nigeria before depositing itself into the Antlantic. Now, why any right thinking person think they can invade and encroch upon its path is beyong me. Listen guys, you can break government's town planning laws, bribe your ways to get what you want in life but no one can cheat NATURE! River Niger has simply reclaimed what for eternity is it's -- the river path!

Even if Harold Smith's claim were to be discountenanced, we (including the generation of my great grandparents) all know that the British were in the colonies (including Nigeria) for their selfish interests. Period. That said, I am not surprised that this guy called David Mark is an slowpoke. When he was the Minister of Communication, he reportedly maintained that "telephone was not meant for ordinary people". This speaks volumes about the way David Mark perceives ordinary Nigerian citizens. David Mark is definitely not representing the interests of the populace but that of his stomach and pockets. Inasmuch as we have his type at the helms of affairs in Nigeria, the country would never make any progress whatsoever.

Police accused of killing man five days after wedding

By Eniola Akinkuotu

When on September 15, 2012, Ugochukwu Ozuah, married Joan, his girlfriend of nearly two years; family and friends rejoiced with them at The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Lagos. The 36-year-old man and Joan then stayed at the Whispering Palms, a beach resort in Badagry, for three days for their honeymoon.

The couple's joy was however cut short on September 20, 2012, when the groom was allegedly shot and killed by policemen attached to the Anthony Division. Ozuah, an indigene of Anambra State and Mechanical Engineering Graduate of the University of Ado Ekiti, was allegedly killed close to the UPS Bus Stop along Oworonsoki-Oshodi Expressway while dropping his friend off. The friend, Erikefe Omene, who came from the United Kingdom to attend the wedding, told PUNCH Metro that he still could not understand why the policemen shot the deceased. He said, "I went to visit Ozuah at his house at Oke Olowo Estate on Thursday. When it was around 10pm, I wanted to leave but he said taxis were not allowed into the estate so he decided to drop me off outside the estate where I would get a taxi. We got into his car, a Honda CRV, and he drove out. As we approached the expressway, there was an ash/blue car that stopped around the same time to drop someone. "An individual came out of the car which was now parked side by side with ours. Because of the manner with which it was parked, I didn't know the type of car it was. Policemen approached the said car and I thought it was just a routine check so we didn't pay it much attention. "Ozuah parked the car and we both alighted so we could stop a taxi but before he to shut the door, one of the policemen said, 'Who's there? Who goes there?' And shot Ozuah who then fell flat on the floor. Individuals from the ash/blue car suddenly ran behind Ozuah's car to where I was and I thought the policemen might come around to shoot. So, I ran back into the estate." Omene said he went to the deceased's house to inform his wife of what had happened. He said Joan, and her in-laws took another car and drove back to the scene. He said upon returning to the scene about 10 to 20 minutes later, he saw more policemen standing near Ozuah who was lying down in a pool of his own blood. He said, "By the time we arrived the scene, there were many policemen there. The Divisional Police Officer said he just received a phone call that someone was shot. I then told the DPO that it was a policeman that shot my friend. The DPO then asked me to explain and I narrated the story to him. He said, 'Are you sure it wasn't someone in black that shot your friend?' "At this point, Ozuah's wife started shouting that we should rush him to a hospital. Although he wasn't moving, his body was still warm. So, we laid him on the backseat and her brother-in-law drove him down to the hospital." Omene said he remained with the DPO and reiterated what had happened but the DPO was adamant, saying the killers must have been armed robbers in police uniform. Omene added that he and the DPO then drove to the hospital where the doctor said Ozuah was dead.

It was learnt that Omene immediately went to the police station where he wrote a statement. Ozuah's remains were said to have been deposited at the morgue of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. At the home of Nkechi, the deceased's elder sister, on Friday, sympathisers came in droves to condole with the family. The deceased's younger sister, who wept bitterly, told our correspondent that Ozuah was, until his death, the only surviving son of the family. "Our mother gave birth to three girls and two boys. One of our brothers died in 2008 and Ugochuckwu (Ozuah) was the only surviving son. Our father is late and when I got married three years ago, he (Ozuah) was the one who gave me away. It feels like a nightmare that he was killed just days after his wedding and he had no child. Our mother is still alive. What a tragedy," she said. Omene, who also wept profusely, described the deceased as a jovial and straightforward person. When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said it was armed robbers that killed Ozuah and not the police. Braide, in a a text message, said, "No, it's falsehood. The guy was actually killed by armed robbers in a Sports Utility Vehicle, not the police please."

Where is the forensic evidence for concluding that the deceased was killed by an armed robber? This DPO and the police spokesperson both deserve to be fed to angry and hungry LIONS. Is this the Nigeria that some of us in the diaspora are hoping to return/relocate back to?

Conversely, however, the historical Muhammad (c. 570 – c. 8 June 632); also transliterated as Mohammad, Mohammed, or Muhammed; Arabic: محمد‎, full name: Abū al-Qāsim Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim (Arabic: محمد بن عبد الله بن عبد المطلب ‎) was A VIOLENT MAN OF WAR. Their respective followers take cues from their respective lifestyles. Christians are, in the main, PEACEFUL, Muslims are ostensibly VIOLENT.
