Christianity EtcJesus Had A Wife, Newly Discovered Gospel Suggests by EreluY(op): 4:02pm On Sep 19, 2012
A Harvard historian has identified a faded, fourth-century scrap of papyrus she calls "The Gospel of Jesus's Wife." One line of the torn fragment of text purportedly reads: "Jesus said to them, 'My wife …'" The following line states, "she will be able to be my disciple."

The finding was announced to the public today (Sept. 18) by Karen King, a historian of early Christianity, author of several books about new Gospel discoveries and the Hollis professor of divinity at Harvard Divinity School. King first examined the privately owned fragment in 2011, and has since been studying it with the help of a small group of scholars.
According to the New York Times, King and her collaborators have concluded that the business card-size fragment is not a forgery, and she is presenting the discovery today at a meeting of International Congress of Coptic Studies in Rome.

The fragment, written in Coptic, the language of a group of early Christians in Egypt, has an unknown provenance, and its owner has opted to remain anonymous. Questions about the fragment abound, but scholars say it will nonetheless reignite several old debates: Was Jesus married? If so, was Mary Magdalene his wife? And did he have a female disciple? [Jesus Christ the Man: Does the Physical Evidence Hold Up?]

Scholars say these controversies date to the early centuries of Christianity, but they remain relevant today. In the Roman Catholic Church, for example, women and married men are barred from priesthood because of the model thought to have been set by Jesus.

King has cautioned that the new discovery should not be taken as proof that Jesus was actually married. The text appears to have been written centuries after he lived, and all other early Christian literature is silent on the question of his marital status.

But the scrap of papyrus — the first known statement from antiquity that refers to Jesus speaking of a wife — provides evidence that there was an active discussion among early Christians about whether Jesus was celibate or married, and which path his followers should choose, King told the Times.

"This fragment suggests that some early Christians had a tradition that Jesus was married," King said. "There was, we already know, a controversy in the second century over whether Jesus was married, caught up with a debate about whether Christians should marry and have sex."

The significance of this fragment was known by scholars previously, and then forgotten. When its current owner acquired it in a batch of papyri in 1997 from its previous owner, a German, it came with a handwritten note. The note cited a now-deceased professor of Egyptology in Berlin as having called the fragment "the sole example" of a text in which Jesus claims a wife.

According to the Times, papyrologists and Coptic linguists who have studied the artifact thus far say they are convinced by its genuineness by the fading of the ink on the papyrus fibers and the traces of ink adhered to the bent fibers at the edges. The Coptic grammar, handwriting and ideas represented in the text would also have been nearly impossible to forge.
"It's hard to construct a scenario that is at all plausible in which somebody fakes something like this. The world is not really crawling with crooked papyrologists," Roger Bagnall, director of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, at New York University, told the New York Times.

Certain lines of the text resemble snippets from the Gospels of Thomas and Mary, both believed to have been written in the late second century and later translated into Coptic. King surmises that this fragment is also copied from a second-century Greek text.

Further study will be needed to work out the details, but the meaning of the words "my wife" is beyond question, King said. The text beyond "Jesus said to them, 'My wife …'" is cut off.

https://unn.edu.ng/sites/unn.edu.ng/files/images/DSC01882_4_0_0.JPG

[size=14pt]I was searching for a piece of information about the University of Nigeria and I stumbled on this piece of news item both on UNN's website (http://unn.edu.ng/news/vice-chancellor-professor-bartho-okolo-presents-18-units-microscopes-and-3-units-ph-meters-facu) and its Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/universityofnigeria) and was left absolutely shocked. UNN bought 18 units of Microscopes and 3 units of PH Meters and that called for the VC, followed by camera crew, to go and formally present these items to the academic unit of the university that needs them? Is the VC so jobless and senseless as to condescend so low? What is worth celebrating in buying 18 units of Microscopes and 3 units of PH Meters, presenting them and making a BIG FUSS about it?

Universities in the developed world (Europe and North America) routinely buy items of laboratory equipment worth millions of pounds and dollars. These would normally be delivered by van/truck drivers to the relevant laboratories only for lab technicians and/managers to acknowledge their receipt and properly document them in the relevant inventories. I had to Google the VC's name and was shocked to realise he holds a PhD from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, UK. With such an exposure, this man must be taking people for a ride or considering them as fools. Considering remarks on UNN's Facebook, the people are apparently fooled.

Primary and Secondary schools here in the UK would not celebrate the purchase of 18 units of Microscopes and 3 units of PH Meters. Yet that calls for celebration in UNN with the VC presenting the items at a ceremony with paparazzis in attendance. Isn't this symptomatic of what has become of the Nigerian educational system which some continue to brag about on NL, blindly comparing it with education in the developed world?

PM NEWS LAGOS-Same Sex Marriage: Obama’s Nod Emboldens Nigerian Gays.

Gay activists in Nigeria seem to have been emboldened by President Barack Obama’s recent endorsement of homosexual relationships, P.M.NEWS can reveal. In a press statement sent to P.M.NEWS yesterday, gay activists called on the Nigerian Federal Government and National Assembly to revisit their anti-gay stance and legislation for a better society. The National Assembly had on 29 November 2011 criminalised relationships between same sex couples, but gay activists remained silent until after President Obama endorsed such relationships on 9 May 2012. The activists under the aegis of Narconon Nigeria argued that punishing gays or lesbians because of their sexual orientations is inhuman. They disclosed that they held press conferences in Lagos, southwest Nigeria and Abuja, Nigeria’s capital recently and resolved to speak up. “Every citizen deserves the right and freedom of association and choices,” Mr. Ibrahim Kunle who issued the statement on behalf of Narconon said. “Nigeria has not in any way recorded a case of criminality attached to the activities of same sex in the society.
“Many critics based their argument against the practices of homosexual on the passion for religious extremism. “To take it a little further, for something to be considered wrong in even the most primitive society, the onus of proving harm should be on the accuser. “Since gays and lesbians do not cause harm to the society as a whole or other individuals within that society, there is no issue of right or wrong. “In Nigeria today, same-sex sexual activities is illegal according to Chapter 21, Articles 214 and 217 of the Nigerian penal code and can be punished by imprisonment of up to 14 years throughout Nigeria. “Narconon Nigeria describes this as inhuman and unfair justification to the persons involved in the same sex activities,” Narconon said, adding that it is a non-governmental organization involved in the fight against drug abuse, human rights abuse and crime. The activists called on the Nigerian government to leave gays and lesbians alone and focus on the fight against insecurity and poverty. “Narconon Nigeria believes the government needs to pay more attention to insecurity (terrorism & kidnapping), economic instability, corruption, education, health, unemployment, drug trafficking and abuse, organised crime etc. “The country has gradually fallen into the hands of criminal gangs, who as ubiquitous as they are, are mushrooming at alarming proportion, while the government seems not to be paying attention to the rapacious consequences they are wreaking and could wreak on the society at large. The government seems not to be interested in real reforms,” Narconon said.

afam4eva: Most universities in the UK are crappy anyways except the Oxbridge schools.
You must be daft to make this type of statement. Nigerian are good at deriding things they do not have and possibly could never have.

@Frosbel. You're right in maintaining that "The UK has some of the best universities in the world other than Cambridge and Oxford". World university rankings (http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2011-2012/top-400.html) aptly demonstrate this.

Personally speaking, no matter what, I wouldn't recommend ex-polytechnics e.g. Westminster, Middlesex, LMU, MMU, Plymouth, West London, UWE, UWS, etc., as destinations for higher education in the UK. What Nigerians aspiring to study in the UK need to do is constantly check the league tables (and there are many of them e.g. http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings; http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2012/may/21/university-league-table-2013) to ascertain that the university they are intending to enrol at are highly ranked. In other words, Nigerians should do thorough research about studying abroad before taking the plunge!
Car TalkRe: List Of "One Way" Roads In Lagos by EreluY(f): 7:38pm On Aug 15, 2012
[b]What the government simply needs to do is put up road signs everywhere and expect road users to follow them. Why can't we, for once, do things properly? From London to Paris, From Holland to Germany to Poland to Italy, all you simply do is follow road signs and you will not only get to your destination, but also keep to road safety (speed limit, one way traffic, etc) rules. We want to emulate what goes on in the developed world but do so haphazardly!

The last time I was in Nigeria, that was some 3 years ago, LATSMA officials impounded my car saying I parked where I shouldn't have. Fellow, Nairalanders, there was neither single/double yellow lines where I PARKED ooooo, neither was there any other traffic signs. So, how else am I (or anyone for that matter) supposed to know it's a no parking area. I insisted on not 'settling' them. Apparently, I had time on my hand. My car was towed to LGA office. I sought to speak with their overall boss and talked sense into his head. I also educated him about how things are done in the developed world. The result? I was told 'madam this is Naija. Anyway, bless the boys and they'll let you go.' I 'shakara dem', maintaining they should release my car immediately or else we'll meet in the law court. Needless to say their boss asked them to let me go in peace.

I studied Banking and Finance in Nigeria and worked in the banking sector for over a decade. Desire for further studies and a more challenging job routine made me to seek admission to study here in the UK. I came over, courtesy a fully funded scholarship to study for my MBA in a top 5 UK university. Whilst completing my MBA, one of my professors encouraged me to enrol on a PhD. I applied and was admitted with full funding. Apart from occasional tutoring of undergraduates, I wasn’t working as I was fully funded. I landed a job shortly after successfully defending my PhD thesis and before graduating a few months after. I have since been in full-time employment with GSOH.

I realised not everyone would have it that easy. But let me share this story with you. One of my colleagues, a Nigerian, started working in our office complex in the City as a cleaner. That was whilst he was studying (self-funded) for his MBA at Imperial College. Months after completing his studies, he was still doing this job (together with some other menial jobs) as he was yet to secure a professional job. On one particular day, this Nigerian guy entered the office of one of the top notch guys in the organisation to empty the bins and tidy up the room generally. On entering the room, the executive guy routinely said something along the lines of “hello, how are you?” My Nigerian colleague answered “Oh! Am not fine at all”. A conversation ensued and the Nigerian guy declared his academic pedigree: MBA graduate of Imperial College, London – the same institution where the executive guy earned the same degree years earlier. One thing led to the other, this Nigerian guy got a very well paid, professional job in my organisation. He is still there, rising through the ranks.

[b]I really pity you because the premise on which you conclude lacks credibility.

1. Consult the bible to know God? First and foremost, I wonder whether or not you are aware that many of the Bible stories, especially those contained in the Old Testament, are ancient Israelites/Hebrew folklores and Mesopotamian mythologies. Like folklores and myths from the rest of the world, the stories aren't necessarily true. So, for example, the Bible contains a pack of lies. From the very beginning of the Bible, it provides us with two creation stories. Is one right and the other wrong? Or both accounts are right and/or wrong? Let me give you some biblical exegetical lessons. In reality, those stories comes from different (J-E-P-D) sources. Later canonised, these were misleadingly ascribed to Moses.

2. From Oxford and Cambridge to Harvard and Princeton, the best biblical scholars and exegetes with the most insightful and penetrative analysis of the Bible are far from being 'Solid Christians'. They are largely atheists. This thread paints a true to life picture of most Nigerians claiming to be religious.

[b]People trying to justify whose responsibility it is to fund this and similar schools across Nigeria are missing one crucially important point. It is the Citizens of Nigeria (not simply children of Obafemi Owode or Ogun State) who are suffering here. It is future Nigerians and the future of Nigeria that is being destroyed and eroded here. How, in the future, will the majority of children schooling in this sort of environment, not be slaves of some sorts to their counterparts growing up in the likes of UK, USA, Canada, Italy, France, etc? Fellow Nigerians, this is beyond party politics. It's not about asking the Ogun State Government to go to Edo State and borrow ideas. I'll be surprised if there are no Edo, Delta, Anambra children in this school. It's, therefore, about holding public office holders accountable. Imagine how the LGA Chairman was complaining about previous governments. Since assuming office, what has he done, even if only to stop the villagers from 'desecrating' the school grounds. Many thanks, in deed, to the reporter who highlighted this issue. Shame to the Christian and Muslim religious leaders walking the corridor of power in all States of the federation and in Abuja, 'cavorting' with government officials, past and present, but failing to ensure that the Citizenry enjoys the dividends of democracy.
