[b]I am writing based on how ATMs work in the developed world (Europe & North America). Someone only needs to have the details on your ATM card. These are as follows: your name as it appears on the card; issue and expiry dates; the long number (usually 16 digits) across the front of the card; and, the authorisation code (last 3 digits) on the back of the card. With these details transactions can take place online, anywhere in the world, where the card type is accepted. Having stopped the card, the details of which, apparently, have been compromised, what the bank needs to do is to re-issue you with a new one -typically containing same name, but different card number, issue and expiry dates and authorisation code. What you then need to do is to ensure that the details are not compromised. This include ensuring that you use the cards on website you trust 100%. In the UK, as is elsewhere in the developed world, customers are insured against unathorised online transactions. This implies that if this incident were to have taken place in the UK, you'll be fully covered and your funds refunded. An acquaintance of mine who has been jobless for a while recently got a job with the University of Maiduguri. I vehemently objected to him taking up that job offer on account of the security situation in that part of Naija. In fact, one of his siblings told him to arrange his funeral before leaving for Maiduguri, if he must go and take up the job offer. His mum (dad had passed away) said his decision to go to Maiduguri would send her to her early grave! For his upkeep, I offered to help him with £150.00 per month (I know it's not great) for the next one year (hoping he'll get a job in that period). He still wouldn't budge, insisting "s/he who would drown in a river/sea/ocean would not die in a desert where there is no water." Fellow NLders, do you think it's wise for this young man whose parents invested a lot into his future (including overseas education) to head up north (Maiduguri) to pursue a lecturing career? What's your candid opinion? Thanks. |
