If I invest N1,000,000 to buy stock A which sells at N10. If stockbroker collects 2.5% to purchase the stock that is N25,000 goes to stockbroker as purchase commission. I am left with N975,000 to purchase the stocks.

This will give me 97,500 units of the stocks.

N1 was declared as dividend. This means my gross dividend is N97,500. Minus WHT

My bank account will receive alert of N87,750

After Qualification Date. Price is adjusted to N9 per share. That brings my 97,500 units of shares to N877,500

With low demand in the stock after Qualification Date. Let us say it continues to trade at N9 for weeks.

I eventually get tired of waiting for it to appreciate. Then I decide to Sell off the 97,500 stocks at that price of N9.

That gives me a gross of N877,500. When the stockbroker deducts 3% for selling my stocks. I am paid N851,175

When I add the dividend of N87,750 I received to it, I am left with N938,925

I have made a total loss of N61,075

Let us look closely at the above scenario and discuss closely: Is Dividend a Trap? Is Dividend a Scam?

Before you respond: my worry is this:

The biggest scam of dividend is the fact that after Qualification Date, the exact amount that is claimed to have been paid to us is also deducted from our stock value. Where then is the addition? It is not just a Scam. It is Fraud.

If the stock price goes down on its own after Qualification Date because of massive Sell Offs. It is understandable as one of the risks of the stock market. But for the same amount that was paid to us as dividend to also be deducted from our own stock is thievery.

Nothing is being added. Nothing!
