In life there are so many disabled people and although these people might seem different, they are humans just like everyone else and deserve to be treated as such.

We have seen cases of people who were born with rare conditions or genetic mutation, but there are some people were born normally but along the line something happened that changed their lives and one of those people is Paul Alexander.

Paul Alexander still remembers the sound of the screen door slamming on that rainy July day in 1952.

The then-6-year-old had just run inside after playing in the field behind his Dallas home. He was feverish and his neck ached. He walked in barefoot, dragging mud onto the kitchen floor. The door sprang shut behind him. He knew his mom would be mad when she saw the mess, but he was taken aback by the fear in her voice.

“God, please, no,” she said. She knew then polio had come for her son.

1952 was riddled with fear for many parents. It was the worst year for polio in the U.S., with nearly 60,000 cases reported across the country. Some cities shut down popular gathering places—movie theaters, swimming pools, bars, bowling alleys.

The virus most commonly affects children, entering the body through the mouth via tiny particles of contaminated feces or, more rarely, droplets from a sneeze or cough. It can lead to flu-like symptoms and has the potential to invade a person’s spinal cord or brain, causing paralysis and potentially death.

For Alexander, the infection started as body aches and a high fever, but not long after, he lost his ability to walk, swallow, and breathe. Doctors performed a tracheotomy and put him in an iron lung—a sealed tank used to treat polio patients who had trouble breathing on their own. During the epidemic, hospital wards were lined with these respirators.

They stimulate breathing by varying air pressure to compress and depress the chest. Children typically spent a couple weeks in one while recovering from the disease, lying on their backs, unable to do much. But Alexander didn’t get out of his.

Eighteen months after he was admitted, doctors said he could go home, thinking he wouldn’t live much longer. His body was nearly completely paralyzed from the neck down, and he couldn’t breathe outside the iron lung. His family brought him—and the lung—home and had what they thought would be their last Christmas together.

But Alexander is still alive today. He’s 74 and resides in Dallas—and for the second time in his life, living through the outbreak of a virus that he is at a high risk of suffering from. Unlike the polio virus, the coronavirus hasn’t been disproportionately impacting children. Those most at risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19 are adults over 65 and those with underlying medical conditions. Alexander checks both boxes.

Different doctors have tried to find solution to Alex condition but they couldn't get any solution. Alex has been in the machine for over 75 years and his condition has not improved.

Please pray for Alex because there is nothing impossible for God to do.

The title says he's been in that stuff for over 72 years.

The body says he got in there at the age of 6 and that's he's 74 now, which means he's been in it for 68 years (74-6). This contradicts the title.

As if the contradiction above wasn't enough, one of the ending paragraphs now says he's been there for over 75 years; another figure entirely different from the two above.

I just took a walk in this cold winter, it's either my brain is frozen or the OP was sleep-typing when he wrote this.

If you were a lady, Nairaland people would say "women don't know what they want".

However, he is driving a point which is the kind of discipline most teachers use. We have many of his kind outside the world

You obviously don't fully understand how human emotions varies. The guy is being truthful with his feelings. You can't have expectations on when and how he forgives.
Some hurt takes time to heal. You would be of help if you had similar or worse experience and can share with him how got over it.

I had far worse punishments actually. Far worse. From different teachers. Where do I start hating from? Probably cause it was a military school and that's normal there. My point to the guy is that the teacher probably didn't single him out for any of those punishments so he was never a target. That singular fact should be a source for succour. The teacher had prefered students (almost all teachers do) and it's not cool. But this level of hatred only hurts him, the guy. He should be interpreting things differently now. Did the man hate him personally? Why would the man hate him personally? Was he too stubborn? Etc. I'd understand his plight if the man hated him for some reasons but I doubt that was the case. The man was just unnecessarily strict and there are people like that. I, therefore, advocate for him to adjust his perspectives for his own mental health.

It depends on the kind of job you do and your skills. There are jobs. But one could still find it hard to find the exact office job he was doing in Nigeria on landing here especially if you're not into tech.

No matter how wonderful you turn out to be, if a teacher was abusive and wicked then it is wrong. Do not make excuses for evil and wickedness. Imagine someone wrote his teacher made him lie on his back and look at the Sun for 1 hour. Those eyes most have been damaged and you want us to clap for the teacher.

Lying on one's back, as bad as it seems, is a regular punishment in many schools and I'm sure he was exaggerating a bit cause it's almost impossible to stare at a bright sun and the teacher didn't stand there for an hour looking at his eyes. Ok, I went to a military school so maybe I'm a bit biased in that area but the point I am trying to make is that the man didn't do anything unheard of and definitely was not targeting the Kevin guy cause there must have been others who had the same punishment. I live in the Americas, we do not punish kids here that way but singling out one teacher in a society where it's considered the norm is not ideal. In his shoes, I might be advocating for schools to ban such punishments, I could even be telling stories of one "wicked teacher" but not with this level of emotional attachment cause we all have those teachers we termed "wicked" and while some could actually be wicked, most times the ones we called wicked were the ones who didnt let us get away with our misdoings.

The teaching job would be a risky one if everyone grew up with the grudges they had against their teachers. He can keep narrating his wicked teacher story but not with the level of attachment except the teacher did something that broke him and like I said, I didn't really read any such thing. From the writeup, I can see he was struggling to find things against the teacher (like claiming he was sleeping with the matron and that he was collecting money from other students' parents). That's the act of something who's bent on presenting his teacher in a bad light and with that level of bias, I'm forced to read with my pinch of salt. That's not support for abuse, that's avoiding the dangers of a single story.

They do. It's written at the bottom of the form you fill for your Ontario residents card and drivers licence. Provided you're using it to jump licence grades, it will be collected. When I was doing Ontario residents card, I already checked the box that asks if you have a foreign drivers license before I read that it will be collected. I then told them I wasn't with it and they asked me to make sure I bring it while doing my drivers licence.

Give up? Seeing that you were there when I was active on that thread, I strongly believe you've invested much time and energy to give up now. There's always light at the end of the tunnel, remember? I'd say hang in there. Provided it doesn't affect your day to day activities, I suggest you always keep your Canadian hustle as a side affair. You never can tell when it'll yield results. Thanks for sharing. Though I doubt any of those hotel would benefit someone who needs to stay near the airport. Nevertheless, it's good to know such cheap hotels are out there. I'm more informed now.

this write-up shows you're an elder here or a young person with some life experience. You'd make a good judge. I remember in my pry. school days, my father's sister(same mum and dad as my dad) was my class teacher, no other teacher ever beat me for once throughout my time there, let alone all the time. But that my aunty, after thorough beating, there would come some punishment. She was so wicked, although I was very stubborn too . Make I no use long stick kill snake, of all my papa sibling, na she I close to pass now. As we dey move reach month end, I go don dey reason her say 'aunty, no forget me when salary enter o'. In fact, she spent on me during lockdown, even bought me cloth unto say I still dey uni dey take style collect money for papa hand at my age, no be ma fault, na condition make crayfish bend . I met few 'panel beater' teachers at sec school too, but wont hate any of them for at least I know they beat me 'cause I did wrong. On the other hand, we can't deny the fact that some teachers are devil's incarnates.

Glad you were able to protect your peace of mind by letting go negative thoughts about the past. As for the condition of the crayfish, these are just the days of your little beginnings. Cherish them and never forget them cause you'll use them to motivate others in future.

I don't know the name of the place, we stopped by when travelling but I think the name is popular. We asked people around, the name was given, so we asked a bike man to lead us there.
Our car was washed in the morning.

Might not be a 7-Star Hotel, but the place is damn. I don't really know the amount per night, coz I book for several days if I want to visit, but it's slightly below 10k on the average of days. No free meals though.
Nice Facilities exist in Abuja too, if you look well.

N11,430. Still a whole lot cheaper than all the hotel I've been using. Nice.
