I think trendy name are used in these questions just to keep the student's interest. But looking at this question, I don't really know if it's possible to answer it without knowing who the Obi guy is or the lecturer assumed everyone knew him. And that makes me wonder if those who don't are getting punished for it.

The point I'm trying to make is, it's cool using the names Maria, Pere, Obi, etc. provided students are not really expected to know who these people are before being able to attempt the question cause their lives were never part of the curriculum.

You are getting it wrong, there are different types of immigrants, the legal, the illegal and the refugees.

Why the west is foolish is because they take in refugees from countries with culture and values that are totally different from theirs, these refugees oftentimes don't integrate and end up becoming a burden on the host financially and also become security threats.

All the European countries that accepted refugees from Syria since 2015 have had to deal with different cases of terrorist attacks. Poland however decided against taking refugees and they are the only country in the EU without any terrorist attack.

What the west should have done is influence neighbouring countries with similar values to take more of these refugees.

First, there's nothing in the story that says the guy is a refugee. Even if he is, the point I'm making here is that the western world takes refugees from virtually all the countries of the world including Nigeria using the same standards. And as a matter of policy, that standard doesn't change for one country alone. So if they are going to shut out some countries on the grounds of difference in value, terrorist activities or crime history, Afghanistan wouldn't be the holy country affected. Besides, countries like the US and Canada are considered to be most diverse in the world. By implication, they have an open culture and that makes difficult to classify other countries into the ones that share values with them and the ones that don't. How do you explain that Nigeria as a country shares values with Canada? Or you think American Muslims of Asian decent will sit back and let the US shut out Afghanistan while taking refugees from other places? Trump tried something similar, how did that work out?

Brother, some things are easier written on paper than put into practice.

Mr Reasonable, that's a silly question conceived by a empty skull. Adding "is it true?" doesn't make it any less disgusting. If someone says to you "I heard you're mama is a hoe, is it true?", will you sit back to discuss it on the grounds that it's just a question?

This question came as a result of a video circulating online, and that's funny cause we've seen pics and videos of men sleeping with dogs, goats, cows, etc. Nobody came to as ask if it's true that men now purchase those animals for sexual gratification. But you want people to sit and discuss the veracity of this simply because it's now ladies involves? Very reasonable indeed.

The immigrant in question has been there since 2016. He was not among those recently evacuated. He probably migrated just like any other person. You don't expect Germany to deny people visa just on the ground that they are muslims or that there are bad people committing atrocity in their country. A country is blacklisted based on historical data. And there's always a yardstick, a standard devoid of sentiments. If that standard is adjusted to keep people from Afghanistan out, how sure are you that Nigeria wouldn't find herself on the unfortunate side of the divide too? The country is also full of all sorts of terror group, not to mention the international crime rate. Don't make the mistake of thinking Afghanistan would be an isolated case.

Policies are not based on sentiments and objectively speaking, the West does not have any tangible reason so far to deny people from Afghanistan Visa. There might be gloomy predictions but that's nothing to work with. People from Afghanistan have been travelling to the western world for many years. If they had a track record of committing such crimes, the West wouldn't need you to tell them what to do. They have the data and the data drive the decisions.

But it would be better if you say "I" and not "we". The content you said made you join the app was created by those who might have joined simply cause the app offered them anonymity. A new app has no content and those who made the initial appealing contents might not have had the courage to do so if they had to identify themselves. Don't get me wrong, my post was not against KYC verification and its importance. I only posited that the absence of it is a grand part of the idea behind NL. It's like adding KYC verification to project titled "Faceless Online Forum". That would stick out. It's even worse now there are millions of users already enjoying the "facelessness".

The idea of making it a choice is good middle ground in my opinion.

Facebook never planned to be anonymous. It was never a key part of the app. NL has being anonymous at its core. Taking that away now would be a shift in ideology and not just technical improvement. Things could easily go south.

You probably need a new system and not NL. Adding such a feature to a forum originally conceptualized to be anonymous wouldn't just be an "improvement" but a complete philosophical change. "Facelessness" is a grand part of what Nairaland is all about. It can even be argued that the faceless nature of the app is what has brought it this far. So what you're suggesting is an overhaul. Like I said, you're not improving the design, you're challenging the idea behind it. And when the idea behind the design of a system is challenged, the usual outcome is a new system and not overhauling the existing one.

It's easy for anyone who isn't part of the NL design team to suggest KYC verification because such a person naturally has a different line of thought. But instead of suggesting this shift to Seun, why not evaluate the impact of KYC verification (or the absence of it) and use that as your business justification in the literature of a new system or in your pitching? Such an evaluation would let you know if it's even worth it or not. In other words, I am suggesting you create an app that has this feature and let people decide if they want to join or not instead of suddenly adding it to system being used by millions of people who probably joined cause of the anonymous nature of the app.

Just an opinion. Good thinking on your part.

China has almost everything they need to be the world power but not the willingness to make the associated sacrifices. The western world is leading simply cause they have an open culture. If you go to the US, the UK, Canada, etc., you'd blend in the very next minute cause the countries thrive on importing cultures and making it their own and thereby making thier society extremely diverse and all encompassing. Everyone has something they find interesting in these countries, it is very easy to call them home. China, despite the size, has a very closed culture. It will be almost impossible for them to have the kind of influence the West has on the rest of the world.
