Jelal0007: Nationalism indeed. Before any citizen can think of wielding arms for his country and proudly fight for her, the country must give him/her something to believe in. Don't also forget that joining the military in Nigeria, entails having political or top military connections. When you take a lot of things into consideration, you'll agree that Nigeria isn't an entity worth fighting or dying for. Many military personnel today, are in the military because they don't have other options. The situation is pathetic. The reality is that if you don't pick up arms and defend your country, then you as a person are not safe. You think the invading forces will care for your scrupples against the government??,they see you as a Nigerian, and therefore as an enemy, your decision to sit at home and sulk, bemoaning your misfortune, will not have any effect on an aggressor ,other than getting you killed faster. |

BabaOwen: what has Nigeria done for majority of us that will make majority of Nigerians defend Nigeria? True, maybe Nigeria has done nothing for a vast majority of us,but we must acknowledge that Nigeria doesn't belong to the few elites at the helm of affairs, but to all of us,hence,we must protect her if the need arises. Sooner or later, history will recall. |

SupremeCourt: I dont need your useless advice that tells another Nigerian not to speak his mind on social media because 10 people dont want to hear his topic, NOTHING will happen to me if I ignore you. You are just another Nairalander, period. Here, on this Nairaland, all of us are EQUAL, nobody will rule over others.
Who told your ignorant self Nigeria will not fight anybody not even Benin? Nigeria fought Chad 1980s with President Buhari as Armoured corps General rolling scorpion tanks and NAF mig-21 destroying Chadians up to 50 km near Ndjamena capital city, the video by NAF has been posted here many times. Cameroon we fought and killed over Bakassi Shagari and Abacha time.
Most of you here are ignorant, and anybody that betters you in knowledge is called useless contributor, stupiid, irrelevant, repeating himself, he must get out of the forum to make you not be overshadowed in broad day light. Does your family own Nairaland? No !
You have English reading problem. I never said Nigeria will go and fight Algeria, I said what if Algeria invades us weapons they stockpile? I proved it because Nigerian history records of Biafra war dozens of Algerian air force jet bombers were flown to support my own side of Nigeria and used to demolish other side of Nigerians in the Eastern region.
I have told you all, driving me away is a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, all of us are equal Nigerians who will all enjoy freedom of speech in our democracy, same freedom people died for on streets of Lagos to stop military censorship, we are NOT going to allow suppression of any Nigerian's rights, I will be here as long as I want, I will write anything I want as a reasonable person.
You think this forum is worldwide hot cake? You are not more than 15 people recycling yourselves, other threads on Nairaland have 1,000 different people commenting, so dont think your thread is gold and bigger than any Nigerian law that gives Nigerians freedom.
Go and sit down, I will be here to comment anytime I like it, you can do me NOTHING ! I agree with your points, these are problems that most of us know about, but few like to acknowledge the possibility. I do agree that it is myopic not to view the heavy armament of some of our continental neighbours as a threat. The issue is,what can be done?? |

Rossikk: A New GIANT OF AFRICA Set To Challenge Nigeria's Continental Dominance
The East African Federation (Swahili: Shirikisho la Afrika Mashariki) is a proposed political union of the six sovereign states of the East African Community – Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda – as a single federated sovereign state. In September 2018 a committee was formed to begin the process of drafting a regional constitution.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a8/East_African_Federation_%28orthographic_projection%29.svg/1024px-East_African_Federation_%28orthographic_projection%29.svg.png
At 952,592 sq mi, the East African Federation would be the largest country in Africa and 10th-largest in the world. With a population of 178,978,883 as of 2018, it would also be the second most populous nation in Africa (after Nigeria) and eighth in the world. Its population would be greater than that of Russia, Japan and Mexico, and roughly half that of the United States.
Swahili would be the lingua franca and the official language would be English. The proposed capital is the Tanzanian city of Arusha, which is close to the Kenyan border. Arusha is the current headquarters of the East African Community.
The union's proposed currency would be the East African shilling, which according to a 2013 published report is slated to become the common currency of five of the six member countries by 2023. The GDP (PPP) estimate would be US$472.238 billion and be the fifth largest in Africa and 43rd largest in the world.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_African_Federation A future threat to Nigerian hegemony on the continent, if only we had intelligent leaders, such a union must be neutralized at all cost. |

Daewang: That is false. Igbos have repeatedly expressed their dissatisfaction and unwillingness to be part of this union. Igbos are not religiously, culturally, linguistically or economically similar to other ethnicities in any way. We are not one and can never be one. Do not pretend to speak the mind of the igbo race as a whole. |

Daewang: How can you claim to be anti-globalist and at the same time support Nigeria. Nigeria is the biggest example of the disaster of globalism. Unwilling ethnic nationalities are being compelled to be in an unholy and unworkable union. The sovereignty and liberty of these ethnic nationalities is being eroded. "unwilling" ethnic groups??,who are the unwilling ethnic groups??,the country may have internal dissidents, but that doesn't mean that it's made up of an unwilling mass of people. In Nigeria, sociocultural ties has made us one. |

GreyLaw: OP I largely agree with your points. I must note, however, that Nigeria is NOT a small nation as you alluded. Poor, yes; small, no.
Nigeria is amonst the most populated countries in this world, and even though things are messed up in Nigeria, yet Nigeria is not a small nation. You want small? Togo, Liberia, etc are small nations. By small,I don't mean the size or population,I am alluding to the country's status in geopolitical terms. |

It is a noticeable trend in Nigeria that supporters of zionism(those who style themselves "Nigerian jews" ) are secessionists. Making Judaism synonymous to secessionism and other treasonous felonies is a dangerous eventuality. We may have a situation in the near future where we begin to identify renegades as Jews. |

SueZuckerberg: Good points you have there. I could not agree more. Winning across board shows love for the political candidate unlike winning big states with a large population. Exactly, it also solves the issue of concentration of power in a particular region of the country, thereby making others feel marginalised. |
Politics › INEC: A Need To Review Nigeria's Electoral Laws by EVarn(op): 9:30am On Feb 27, 2019 |
So now the Presidential and NASS elections have been concluded, and President Muhammadu Buhari returns elected. Going forward, what are the issues we should learn from these elections and how can we strengthen our democracy through them?.
For me, there is just one glaring issue I feel we should take care of as a country, which is our voting system.
From the just concluded elections, PDP nearly won the majority of the states(though APC still won majority of states anyway), but the fact struck me that even if Atiku had won more states than Buhari, Buhari would have still been declared winner because he had more aggregate votes. This is wrong, and should be corrected.
I think we should operate a system where the candidate who won the highest number of states is declared president, even though the other candidate wins majority votes.
Our electoral laws should be amended in such a way that a party must win majority states, not necessarily majority votes.
So for example, in the case that PDP wins in 26 states and APC wins in 11 states, but APC has the total majority of votes(due to winning the so called "big states" ) , PDP should still be declared winner because they won more states.
Also, in the case that APC has 17 states and PDP has say 19 states, but APC has majority aggregate votes, then PDP is still winner.
If the parties splits the states 18 each, then the party with the highest aggregate votes can then be used to declare a winner.
Pros:
1. Prevents the sense of Northern hegemony that permeates Nigerian politics, due to the north having more population, hence, more voting power, which translates to more political power.
2. Allows politicians to work hard in winning general support from every part of the country, not just focus on the few "swing states" like Lagos and the K4.
3. Reduces sense of marginalisation by small states. Everyone becomes equal.
4. The true will of the people across board is reflected, not the will of the north or the will of the south west.
With this just concluded elections, I see a future situation whereby party A wins more states but has lesser votes, and party B has lesser states but more votes, Party B is then been declared winner. This will not be ideal. |

INEC protocol for ad-hoc staff include the payment of training, feeding and transport allowances to ad-hoc staff latest a day before the election will take place. INEC has already recieved the cash, however, some states have either refused to pay or have severely downgraded the allowances. That is the issue. |
