@OP First of all, get this idea of god giving us the bible out of your head. That's not what happened at all. The old testament is a collection of traditional Hebrew writings. The version of the Hebrew "bible" used by most Jews is called the Masoretic text, and it doesn't contain the apocryphal books. However there are other versions of the Hebrew text which contain these books and for centuries, they were commonly read alongside the other old testament books by many Christians. But during the protestant reformation, Martin Luther and others decided that these books were not on the same level as the rest of the OT and moved them to a separate section called the apocrypha. Later the Vatican responded at the Council of Trent by declaring them to the scriptural and formally giving them the same status as the other books. The development of the new testament canon was even more complicated. The books included were chosen by priests during a series of meetings using very arbitrary standards. The books which aligned with what those men already believed were included, and those that didn't were either edited or discarded. Different groups of Christians had different collections of books they considered scriptural and there are dozens of gospels and epistles that have been excluded from the bible (and many confirmed forgeries that we now consider scripture). The reason we now have this particular canon and not another is because long ago, the Christians who used it managed to take over the government of Rome, declare it as the definitive canon; then exile, torture and kill those who disagreed with them. |
You people want to turn Nairaland into more of an echo chamber than it already is. We all know that people are only going to like and dislike according to their own petty biases. That means that sensible atheistic posts will get down voted while senseless Christian ones will get all the likes. And someone who posts a well reasoned statement supporting Buhari will lose out to a pro-PDP zombie talking nonsense. Nairaland has very serious problems but reducing everything to a popularity contest is only going to make them worse. |
Marriage is overhyped. Many single women would have been perfectly happy if not for busybodies like you guys looking down on them and making them feel inadequate. Its not by force you must marry, if the woman herself is not complaining then save your pity for someone who needs it. There's plenty of married people who are complete miserable. And there's plenty of people who are happily divorced. You need to stop projecting your own desires on everybody else. Not everybody wants what you want. And learn to mind your business. |
If you don't want Ebola to come back then tell your pastors to shut up with their fake healing nonsense. It was TB Joshua that attracted the first Liberian guy here with his lies. And then many of those who were first exposed to him ran to different churches seeking for miracles instead of staying at home like they were told. I was involved in the Ebola response and I know for a fact that there were at least 2 people under surveillance who went to Redeemed camp for holy ghost congress against clear instructions, endangering tens of thousands from all over Nigeria. Another one fell sick at a prayer house outside Lagos and was later confirmed to have the disease. The fact is that it is pastors and their 419 healing scams that are responsible for the Ebola deaths in Nigeria. And it was religious people and their magical thinking that were the biggest obstacle in containing it. |
Ubenedictus:This is pure nonsense. Its exactly this kind of warped thinking that leads you religious people to unspeakable acts of cruelty. That's how your Mother Theresa was being celebrated for torturing people in India. She wasn't running a hospital because she made no attempt to cure people even when they had perfectly treatable conditions like TB. And she wasn't running a hospice since she vehemently opposed the use of strong painkillers to relieve suffering. Instead, she just walked around watching people die in agony with a perverse sense of satisfaction. And yet she is called a saint. Religion makes otherwise good people do horrible things. FYI, the natural thing to do when you encounter another being in pain is to try to reduce their suffering as much as you can. We even do this for animals out of instinct. Yet when you see a fellow human in agony who has clearly stated her carefully considered decision to end it, you want to overrule her because of some meaningless dogma written by people who have no clue about the person's situation? May you find more compassionate people in your own hour of need. |
oyb:Oh I know what it looks like. Don't worry. ![]() |
Lol. Its like Seun just discovered DarkMatter2525. And he didn't even post the best one: If Man Obeyed God. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_a6RjR_AHY "Eat the f%&king fruit!!!" |
twicenoni:It depends on what generation of i3. Since my old laptop died, I've been gaming more and more on my super cheap, replacement Ivy Bridge (2012) i3 and it's surprisingly capable. Tomb Raider runs at well over 30fps at 720p with everything set to medium or low (except textures which I left on ultra) and it actually looks better than the 360 & PS3 versions. I've also briefly tried Metro Last Light, Batman Arkham City and Sleeping Dogs and they run fine. (I actually added another 4gig of ram to make 8, but most games don't need more than 4. Intel's integrated graphics are no longer as horrible as they used to be. They're not fantastic, but at 720p, you can still get decent performance if you tweak things a little. Make sure you upgrade to the latest Intel drivers because it makes a big difference. Newer game engines are extremely scalable and can run on very weak hardware; plus the last-gen consoles lasted so long that even budget laptop integrated graphics caught up to them. You wouldn't be getting the full PC master race experience, but gaming on an i3 laptop from within the last 2 years is certainly feasible. |
PastorAIO:You are absolutely correct young sir. |
dein77:Wait, so you're saying you agree that tithing is a fraud perpetrated by religious leaders, that Christian arguments can't stand up to cold hard logic, that Nairaland Christians frequently resort to insults and rudeness when they get trounced by atheists, that religion has failed to improve society, that it's all a scam, and that the big pastors are less than ideal role models? So remind me why are you still a Christian again? Also,I'm also disillusioned with the whole religion scam. I would have also quit it if not for the personal revelations Christ has given me.I suspect that you'll be joining our ranks soon. All you need to do now is examine these "personal revelations" that Christ supposedly gave you and ask yourself if they are really that convincing or if you are just using them to hold on the reality you want rather than the reality you're actually living in. Transitioning to atheism can be a very scary process. We've all been through it and we know it is never easy. But it is so worth it! It's hard to explain how, but trust me it is. It's like jumping into a swimming pool, you feel cold for 2 seconds then its fun all the way. So feel free to dive in, the water's fine. |
I'm disappointed by the lack of nìpples. I'd still tap that though. |
Abraham never existed. He is myth made up by ancient jews for the purpose of justifying their claims on other people's land. Later others like the Muslim prophet saw how much people venerated the myth and started retroactively claiming him in order to lend credibility to their own beliefs. And he's not even a good person despite being made up, in fact he was a pretty horrible guy. To save his own life, he disclaimed own wife and allowed her to be carried off by a stranger and added to a harem (and probably råped out of her senses). He was willing to kill his own son because the voice in his head told him to. He abandoned his first child and his baby mother to die in the wilderness. And he made grandiose claims of owning huge tracts of land when there were already other people living there. Even the one story with a decent moral about treating visitors with proper hospitality has been converted into a justification for homophobia and mistreatment of gays. You'd think it would be easy to make a fictional character decent and likable. It just goes to show how messed up the people who made up the stories' morals were. |
I don't see why everybody is praising the man. Admitting the truth of what has long been basic science is hardly praise worthy. Besides, his predecessors like pope Pius xii and pope John-Paul ii had already conceded this as far back as 1950. And let's not ignore the fact that what he's proposing is theocentric or god-guided evolution which us just as unscientific and just as wrong as regular creationism. The whole point of the theory of evolution is that there is no plan and no agent guiding it. Life evolves via the mechanism of natural selection and no designer is needed to explain all the variety and complexity of life. If the pope is right and human beings evolved, that means there was no Adam and Eve. No Adam and Eve means no original sin and no need for a saviour to die for us. So is the pope going to admit that Christianity is all nonsense and disband the church? Is he going to stop fighting to deny women their bodily autonomy? Is he going to try and end the superstitious rituals that herd innocent children into the claws of pedøphiles? Or is this just an empty PR move to make catholic dogma look less retãrded to an increasingly educated public? Just like when they eventually agreed that the earth wasn't the centre of the universe. We still have less evidence of that than we do for evolution. |

^^^ You don't need a download manager, Steam downloads are rock solid and I've never lost a single kilobyte. My laptop once died while I was downloading one huge game. I bought a new one, copied the steamapps folder over, logged into Steam and the download continued like nothing had happened. Also if you think games are cheap now, just wait till the winter steam sales start. And there's still Humble Bundles, key sellers and other places to get cheap games. I now have over 90 games on steam and the most I've ever spent is $9.99 for the entire half life series. Even if you are paying full price at launch, PC games still commonly cost $10 less than their console versions and you don't pay any premium to resellers or for shipping. Then there's the free online gaming and cloud saves that Sony and Microsoft nickel and dime you for. When I tell the filthy console peasants that PC gaming is cheaper, they don't believe. But once you join the master race you'll wonder how you were wallowing in the mud for so long. |
wiegraf:Since you already have a capable laptop, my advice is to build a desktop. Its far cheaper to get a powerful one than a gaming laptop. 200k is over $1000 and can get you a monster PC is you pick the right parts. Even a $400 PC outperforms both new consoles so you have more than enough cash to build something that will satisfy you for years to come. You can use this build guide to give an idea of what you might need. The only thing is that it mainly recommends AMD CPUs because of price/performance ratio and you might need something more powerful for your work. If you're doing say video editing or something very CPU intensive, then you might want to spring for an Intel i5 or i7. As far as getting all this stuff locally, I advise you to forget about that unless you want to pay double. Plus Nigerians mostly sell outdated stuff anyway.Shop for the best prices on Newegg, tigerdirect and Amazon. Its now easy and affordable to ship things down here using services like MyUS.com and shoptomydoor.com so you shouldn't have any problem. |
Maleeq:There's very little worth upgrading for in this release. All their attention is now on the Ubuntu phone OS so the desktop is stagnating. 14.04 was extremely stable and is an LTS so there's no point moving to a new version. (with new bugs) if it doesn't add any features. Hopefully thing will get better when Unity 8 desktop is ready. |
malikmoreni:Guy, this isn't 10 years ago when you could compare CPUs on paper with just their clock speed and core count. Things have gotten a lot more complicated and AMD is not what they used to be. Don't forget that Intel's architecture is vastly superior, they are manufacturing at a smaller scales (so can pack far more transistors into each chip), they have more cache and (most importantly) they are far more expensive . It's no longer "octa-core is better than quad-core" or "I have more gigahertz than you", you have to use benchmarks or real world performance to compare, not just specs. The truth is that AMD's top end desktop Vishera chip is barely faster than an i5 at heavily parallelized tasks and its far, far slower in single thread performance. And that's a full-fat desktop proccesor, not the low power, low budget, netbook Jaguar chips that both consoles have. The latest Haswell i5 doesn't just murder Jaguar, it burns down its entire village! The gap is not small at all. It would be fairer to compare Jaguar to the Atom range than an i3, not to talk of i5. Sony and Microsoft decided on that CPU because it was cheap and power efficient. They wanted to make affordable consoles and rightly chose to spend the bulk of their budget on the GPU. So let me say again, modern i7 CPUs are overkill for gaming, you don't need them. Save your money and buy a decent graphics card. |
ActivateKruger:$320 is Nvidia's recommended retail price. Buy from the US and ship it to wherever you are using MyUS.com or shoptomydoor.com . Buy more than one item and ship them together to save money. NB. I just checked Amazon and Newegg and it is mostly out of stock, prolly because people are buying them like crazy. The few retailers that have in stock are taking advantage by adding money. But most models on Newegg are between $330 and $370 and many of those have added features like factory overclocks and improved coolers. Wait for a few weeks for the market to cool down and you'll get it for the proper price. |
ThaInquisition:Prebuilt rigs are fine for PC gaming. All you need is to add a graphics card and you're good to go. Make sure you buy at most a core i5 (quad core). Don't waste your money on an i7, that's serious overkill for gaming purposes and the extra money can be better spent on the GPU. The Xbox one and PS4 both use pathetic netbook CPUs that aren't even close to an i3 in terms of power, so an i5 is more than enough for the foreseeable future. If you're short of cash, you can get an AMD processor which is much cheaper than Intel. Plus AMD have the advantage of having more CPU cores so they'll cope well on games that are designed around the new consoles before being ported to PC. Get the most powerful graphics card you can afford from the latest generation. If you have crazy money you should get the nvidia geforce 970 for about $320. It easily runs the most demanding games at 1080p/60fps and produces very little heat so you can overclock it and it'll last longer than hotter cards if you use the default clockspeed. Even the cheaper cards like the nvidia 750Ti and the AMD R9 270 still outperform the new consoles and they cost relative peanuts. |
K0ala7:What valid concerns do Muslims have regarding how females dress? Please explain them without resorting to unsupported claims from Islamic theology or superstitious rubbish. What does the length of time Muslims have been wearing hijab have to do with anything. Calabar traditionalists have been killing twins for a long time too. Should we also change the rules to accommodate them? Why should anybody care if Muslims feel aggrieved because they have to obey the same rules as everybody else? Do you think that Muslims should have special status above the rest of us? If so, please let us know so everybody can know that we're debating with an islamist and not a sane human being. |
KingMEXX:The most important thing is the Nvidia geforce 840M. You should be able to get very good frame rates at 720p. You'll prolly have to reduce settings to medium or low if you want to game at 1080p. Though if you really want to game properly, you should seriously consider getting a desktop PC with a dedicated graphics card. I know that NEPA doesn't allow us to enjoy such things but that is the best and most economical way to game on PCs. |
The way forward is for Muslim students to stop their whining and obey the school rules. Your religion does not entitle you to any special treatment or exempt you from any rules that are binding on others. Your religion is your problem and yours alone, nobody is required to do anything to accommodate your beliefs. This goes double when those beliefs are irrational and don't benefit anyone in any tangible way. If one religion comes out and says they want to go to school nakëd, are we going to change the rules to accommodate them? What makes Muslim beliefs carry more weight that those of any other religion? Nigeria is a secular country with secular laws which don't respect any religion whatsoever. If Muslims have a problem with that, they can either try and change the constitution to favour them (good luck with that), or move to a country that recognises their particular brand of superstition like Saudi Arabia, Iran or ISIS controlled Iraq. |
Ubenedictus:In virtually all countries where abortion is legal, healthcare providers are legally required to provide comprehensive sex education before and after the procedure, and to offer contraceptives that the women can start before they go home. Preventing unwanted pregnancies is the best way to lower abortion rates. In countries where it is illegal, the illegal backyard abortionists who provide the service don't bother with sex education because they want the repeat business. That's why countries like Chile who follow the Vatican's nonsense teachings have far higher abortion rates than the UK, Holland and Canada where it is legal with few restrictions. And BTW, the only reason abortion is so dangerous is because it is illegal. Not a single woman has died from abortion related causes in the UK and Wales in the last 4 years at least (that's as far back as I checked). Every woman who dies this way is blood on the hands of people like you who refuse to deal with facts. I actually refuse to debate with someone who sees nothing wrong with abortion on requests for non-medical reasons. If your parent excercised their reproductive right they would have spared me the trouble of this arguement.Very classy! /s If my mother had decided not to risk her life and health by allowing me the use of her womb, that would have been her right as a human being. In the words of Mark Twain, I was dead before I was born and didn't suffer the slightest inconvenience from it. You believe the principle of politics in the civil world are relevant in the church, they aren't.I believe that the catholic church is living in a fantasy world and have completely lost touch with objective reality. Sensible societies who want to minimise abortions are already doing so successfully. But you people insist on keeping young people ignorant by opposing comprehensive sex education; then opposing contraceptives and slüt-shaming those who ask for them; then forcing those who get pregnant to either patronise unsafe backyard abortionists, or have unwanted, unloved babies that they can't take care of. And you call yourselves sane. |
wiegraf:Tomb Raider is just 9.1GB which isn't too bad. You can download it in 2 or 3 nights with Spectranet and It'll use up less than 20% of your total monthly bandwidth. With Swift, you can get it in a few hours even though its a bigger chunk of your limit. There's people here who regularly torrent PC and PS3 games which can be up to 20-30GB each, not including uploads. And piracy does hurt sales, maybe not so much in consoles but definitely on PC. Despite how good it is, Tomb Raider was considered a commercial failure until it was re-released on the next gen consoles. The more people buy it, the greater the chances we'll get a well ported sequel (and the less likely the devs will have to sign an exclusive deal with Microsoft or Sony to reduce their risk). Plus even if you're not going to download it, there's nothing wrong with giving the devs some money just to support them. Half of the games I own on steam I bought out of guilt for pirating them in the past. Its different if you're a broke student, but those of us who have jobs and earn money need to start being responsible and giving sonething back to the people whose hard work gives us so much joy. |
The new Tomb Raider is on sale today for $4 on Steam. That's less than 700 Naira for one of last year's best games. You guys should consider buying it before the sale expires. I know that boys are broke and all, but when an affordable deal like this comes along we should try and support the people that are making all these nice games for us. Buying it from steam actually uses fewer of your precious GBs than torrenting since you're not uploading anything. Plus once you've bought it, you own it forever and can re-download whenever you want. Lets support the industry abeg. |

They should be subject to the same rules as other NGOs and charities. They should be required to release their financial information to the public including details of donation and spending in order to qualify for tax exempt status. They should be required to show evidence of their charitable spending. Promoting their religion should not count as charitable spending since it benefits no one except the religious organisations. Neither should running for-profit businesses like schools, universities and printing businesses. Why should a motherless babies home have to file paperwork to prove they're actually spending their money on babies while private jet owning con men like Oyedepo and Adeboye don't even raise an eyebrow? I have nothing against religious organisations who genuinely do charity work getting tax-exempt status. I do have a problem with all those parasitic churches who contribute nothing of value to society, yet mooch off us by using the roads, police and government services that our taxes pay for. I have a problem with those entitled "men of god" who think its their right to get rich off poor people's desperation yet pay no income tax. Religious organisations shouldn't get any special treatment. They should be treated the same. |
Ubenedictus:Clearly you didn't follow the link I provided. And yes, killing the unborn is a reproductive right. Particularly when the unborn is living in your own body and endangering your life and well-being. The problem with you people is that you don't seem to care about the unforseen consequences of your actions. The fact that your church's teachings are actually increasing the number of abortions as well as the human suffering associated with them is completely lost on you. You and your priests are living in an idealized alternate universe that only exists in your heads, meanwhile real people are suffering and dying because of you. Also don't try to use that separate but equal nonsense to justifybthe church's sideliningbof women. The fact is that they have no role in leadership or decision making and it shows in the senseless doctrines you people promote. There is no excuse for this. What did you think about the video BTW? The guy is a devoted catholic like you, and if you manage to look past the fake hair on his head you'll see he makes some very interesting points. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myGzvGCgnsc?t=46s *Edited to address the issue of the lack of women in the church leadership. |
abubello:Credit to OP for admitting his mistake and editing his post to remove the misinformation. Anybody can make a mistake. If more people behaved like you, Nairaland wouldn't be in the sorry state that it is. And sorry I was so harsh. I just get so annoyed when I see the way Nairaland amplifies lies and half truths because people only read the tread's title before making up their minds and adding more bullshiat to the pile of rubbish posts. My apologies. |

.dat CPU is on the same level with an Intel Core i5 3570 but not quite i7, no way,
