Kaduna state government has announced plans of shutting down telecommunication services as part of the strategy in the ongoing fight against bandits in North-West states. Speaking during a chat with some radio stations, El-Rufai said the shutdown would not cover the entire state. He stated that only local government areas bordering the troubled Zamfara and Katsina states where military onslaught is ongoing will be affected. He said; He said, “We have been advised by the military and other security agencies to shut down telecommunication services in certain LGAs but we are waiting for the security agencies to tell us which specific areas and when. “But I want the people of Kaduna State to know that if they give us the go-ahead tomorrow, we will shut down tomorrow. “There is no doubt that bandits and other criminals rely on telecommunication to communicate with their informants as well as with relatives ofkidnapped victims so as to demand ransom.” The governor said he had already written to the Federal Government on the shutdown which he said had been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. “I will not mention the LGAs to be affected but the local governments that are constantly being tormented by bandits know themselves,” he said. Kaduna, like most states in the North-West zone, has been affected by banditry and kidnapping, especially in Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Chikun, Igabi, Kajuru, Kachia, and Zaria local government areas. According to Governor El-Rufai, due to the shutdown of telecommunication services in Zamfara and Katsina states, some bandits crossed over to neighbouring local government areas in Kaduna to make phone calls and demand ransoms. He also disclosed that Kaduna State Government has established a task force that will go round the hinterlands to monitor compliance with some of the security measures adopted by the state to tackle banditry and kidnappings. These measures include the closure of some fuel stations and markets to strangulate bandits in the forest. While advising residents on the need to identify and report informants or accomplices of bandits, El-Rufai urged residents to report anyone who comes to buy between 20 to 100 loaves of bread to security agents. https://www.channelstv.com/2021/09/29/banditry-kaduna-to-shut-down-telecoms-services-in-some-lgas-for-military-operations/ |
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has expressed appreciation to former Head of State, late General Sani Abacha, over the creation of the state 25 years ago on October 1, 1996. Diri said the Ijaw people remain grateful to the late Nigerian leader for that singular decision regardless of factors that could have hindered the state’s creation. A statement quoted the governor to have said this yesterday, during a thanksgiving service on Nigeria’s 61st independence and Bayelsa State’s 25th anniversary, held at the King of Glory Chapel in Government House, Yenagoa. The statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted him as eulogising Abacha, emphasising that the late Head of State remains a hero to people of the state and indeed the Ijaw nation. He said: “Let me use this medium to thank one man. He may not be popular in Nigeria but to me and all of us Bayelsans, we see him as a great man, a hero. The man who by the stroke of the pen signed the creation of Bayelsa State. I am talking about the late General Sani Abacha. “We acknowledge him as a state and people. By his singular assent, he created this state with just eight local government areas, which was less than the constitutional requirements.” Speaking on Nigeria’s 61st independence anniversary, the Bayelsa governor called on the federal government to ensure justice and equity in the distribution of resources in the country. Diri expressed dissatisfaction with the present lopsided federal structure where the federal government takes resources from states and decides what is given to each state at the end of every month. He said if the country was allowed to practice true federalism, it would enable the states as federating units to control their resources and contribute to the central government. He also expressed belief that Nigeria would be a great country if there was justice and equity as each state had abundant resources that could be harnessed for development of the country. He called for amendment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to increase the three per cent allotted to host communities to 10 per cent as well as include states and local governments as trustees in implementation of the host community fund. Describing the Act as a recipe for anarchy in the Niger Delta, Diri said the exclusion of states and local governments in the implementation of the law would give room to unscrupulous elements to capitalise on the loopholes and cause crisis in communities as it would be difficult to determine host communities. “I call on Mr. President to ensure that there is justice, equity and fairness in the distribution of resources in our dear country. Let there be a new wind in the governance of this country. The PIA is not just and equitable to the people of the Niger Delta and Bayelsa State. “If the Act will be implemented successfully, let me call on Mr President to also send another amendment bill to include the states and local governments in the administration of the law,” he added. The governor urged Bayelsans to celebrate and appreciate their past and present leaders, saying that each leader had contributed in various ways to develop of the state. He acknowledged that more needed to be done in terms of development but that the state had witnessed a lot of development compared to what it was. The governor, who called on Bayelsans to pray for good leaders, also charged leaders at various levels to work hard to bequeath a prosperous society by doing the right things. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2021/09/28/bayelsa-at-25-late-abacha-remains-our-hero-says-diri/ |

Three suspected kidnappers of students of Bethel Baptist High School, Damishi, Kaduna, have been arrested. Frank Mba, police spokesperson, said the three suspects are part of the 25-man gang that kidnapped the students. He said the police has obtained sufficient intelligence to facilitate the arrest of other members of the gang. Addressing journalists on Thursday at the force headquarters, Abuja, the police spokesperson said 47 other suspects were arrested for various offences, including murder, kidnapping, cattle rustling, armed robbery and car theft. A total of 121 students were abducted from their hostels when bandits invaded Bethel Baptist High School on July 5. TheCable had on July 12 reported that Abraham Aniya, one of the students, was rescued by security operatives alongside two other persons who were kidnapped along Kaduna-Kachia road. Two other students escaped on July 20 when they were tasked to go and fetch firewood from a nearby forest. The bandits had subsequently said the students would be released in batches. The first set of 28 students was released on July 25 while two more batches were released on August 27 and September 18. Following the release of the latest batch, 21 students remain in captivity. Although Israel Akanji, president of the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC), had said no ransom will be paid to secure the students’ release , TheCable understands that the bandits received money to set them free. https://www.thecable.ng/police-arrest-kidnappers-of-kaduna-baptist-school-students |

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Northern Elders Forum (NEF) spokesman, says the value-added tax (VAT) tussle in the country is a wake-up call for northern governors to develop their own resources without delay. Baba-Ahmed said this during an interview with Arise TV on Tuesday. He said this following the legal battle between Rivers state and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) over who will be responsible for the collection of VAT from businesses in the state. Baba-Ahmed joins governors like Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state; Aminu Masari of Katsina state, including David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi state, and Kogi state government, in decrying the push for VAT collection by both Lagos and Rivers. Despite this opposition, some southern governors are in support of states imposing and charging VAT. “North, you said you have many people but you are under- developing your own people – the biggest liability of the north is that we have a huge population that is under- developed. You need to develop the human capital that you have,” Baba-Ahmed said. “We need leaders, the current governors don’t recognise this. Otherwise, they won’t be involved in this argument; allow the court to decide. “The VAT issue is a wake-up call for northern governors. If the supreme court rules in favour of Rivers and Lagos, what would governors in the north do? “Northern governors should, without delay, develop their own resources; they should develop the huge agriculture resources to develop the north. The north has a huge population that is largely undeveloped. This population can be deployed into agriculture to develop the north. “Agriculture is a major asset; we have land, we have water, we have livestock, we have minerals that are literally begging to be picked from the ground but our governors are too focused on the pittance that they are getting. This is wrong.” https://www.thecable.ng/northern-governors-should-develop-their-own-resources-says-baba-ahmed-on-vat-tussle |
Governor Aminu Masari has said that the number of bandits in the North West region of the country, outnumber the security personnel in the zone. Masari made the claim while receiving the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed who visited the state to get firsthand information on the successes recorded in the ongoing operations against banditry. Revealing that Northern Governors intended to employ 3,000 trained vigilantes, the Katsina state Governor further accused the military and the police of not giving vigilantes the necessary support. He said; "All the northern state governors intended to employ 3,000 trained vigilantes with the help of police, to arm them, but from the report I’m receiving from the current operations in Katsina State, the needed support is not given to the vigilantes. “Let me digress a bit to address the military and the police. We’re trying to bring in vigilantes, trained by them, but they’re not giving them the necessary support. “We have a situation in which these bandits are out numbering the security forces, when you have volunteer forces that you’ve trained, that are willing to assist you, but the support and response by the military and the police are not encouraging. “Now, we’re recruiting additional 500 and the emirate council is recruiting 250, if they don’t have the conducive atmosphere to operate side by side with the military and the police, how can we succeed?” He also said that the security measures taken against banditry by northwest governors and their counterparts from Nasarawa and Niger States had started yielding positive results. According to him, bandits have come under severe attacks and are attempting to infiltrate communities. Masari added; "The suspension of GSM services, because the informants that invite bandits for kidnap or inform bandits to ambush military or police officers have been cut off. “And also the demand for ransom normally through the GSM has drastically reduced. The banning of sales of petroleum products, along the border local governments in particular, except to designated filling stations which are allowed to sell a maximum of N5,000 to vehicles and to only operate in the day time. “So, Honourable Minister, yes, we’ve closed markets, especially the selling of animals, banning of sales of second hand motorcycles in particular to some markets, and I think we’ll move further toall the markets in the state because we understand that it’s one source they use to buy motorcycles for their banditry and other insurgency activities." Encouraging the federal government to take the fight to the bandits without any fear of collateral damages, Masari added that there is need for extensive study of the situation to reduce damages. Responding to the Governor's statement, Lai Mohammed maintained that banditry was not created by the present administration, hence negotiating with “people who do not share in positive values would not be tolerated.” Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumuni Kabir Usman however said dialogue should not be ruled out as bandits don't have any religion. Usman said; “Bandits don’t have religion. All hands must be on deck to fight this menace of banditry to the end no matter the cost." https://dailytrust.com/bandits-outnumber-security-personnel-masari |
One pastor John Onu, has been killed by police stray bullet at his house in Nkaliki, Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The incident happened on Monday morning, September 20, when police protecting a hotel belonging to one Chukwudi Onyibe, a Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Local Government on Internally Generated Revenue, started to shoot sporadically at rioting youths of the area. Pastor Onu of Glorious Gospel Fire Assembly was observing his morning devotion inside his room in a-3 storey building at Hatchery, Nkaliki road when he was hit by police stray bullets while trying to shut his windows following the commotion outside. The bullet reportedly hit him on the upper side of his chest and pierced through his back. It was gathered that the Youths of Ebyia Upnuhu village had gone on rampage, burning houses in the area after a native of the village was beaten to death allegedly by men of Ebube Agu security outfit who came to make some arrest in the area. It was further gathered that the Council Chairman’s house and that of his Aide, Mr Chukwudi Onyibe were set ablaze in the village. The rampaging youths also attempted to attack Abakaliki local government headquarters, Nakaliki but were dispersed by the security agents. Chairman of the local government, Hon. Emmanuel Nwangele confirmed the incident to journalists in Abakaliki. "I was about to go to the village that night to calm the youths but some people around told me it was late that time; that it was better in the morning. It was after that that I was informed that somebody died and that they are rampaging to the extent that they came to one Bosco Guest House and they were dispersed by the police," he narrated. "They went back home and set ablaze houses. Swift reaction was that I was called that they also moved to my own house and also set it ablaze, destroying so many things. I said why? Because I don’t know the genesis of the problem. Late in the night, they also went back to that Bosco’s hotel. According to information, they were even trying to come to Abakaliki local government headquarters but security agencies prevented them. Then this morning, they repeated "The owner of the guest house, Bosco, Chukwudi Onyibe is my SA on IGR. But information reaching me said that they conveyed Ebubeagu people to go and arrest somebody who stole something and on the way to that place, they had a clash with somebody who overtook their vehicle and from there, they had some squabbles and it was led by one soldier from that our village who was posted outside but returned to the village "It was one of the Ebube Agu boys that they said that had encounter with them and Bosco wasn’t even with them, he was on the steering. This was what I was told, I don’t even know anything about it.” he added. When contacted, the Assistant Police Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, ASP Philip Levi also confirmed the incident but said everything had been brought under control. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2021/9/police-stray-bullet-allegedly-kills-pastor-during-morning-devotion-in-ebonyi.html

Social media giant, Instagram has said that alleged Nigerian fraudster Hushpuppi can continue using his account. Recall that Hushpuppi who lived a life of luxury in Dubai, always flaunted his expensive lifestyle on his Instagram account. He notably shared photos of extravagant shopping trips, luxury cars, clothes, and watches on the platform. Instagram which responded to an inquiry by Dubai-based The National, said the Nigerian fraudster is free to continue using his social media account as he did not violate the social media platform’s laws. The social media giant said it has well-established processes with law enforcement and a policy on “inmate takedown requests” in place for prisoners active on social media. The company’s global team said he would be free to continue to use the site unless directed otherwise from law enforcement in the US, where he is awaiting sentencing. Instagram said accounts are only usually closed if they represent dangerous organisations or individuals. While Hushpuppi is yet to post on Instagram to his 2.5 million followers since June 2020, he has pleaded guilty to his crimes as revealed in court documents from April 2021. The 37-year- old Nigerian had pleaded guilty to online fraud of more $24 million. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2021/9/instagram-reportedly-says-hushpuppi-can-continue-using-his-account-2.html |
On Thursday, Femi Fani-Kayode, former minister of aviation, finally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) — the party he had described as an association of Fulani herdsmen. The development put to rest the speculations and rumours of Fani-Kayode joining the APC as well as the repeated denials from him. In the past, the former minister had described APC as a party of looters, saying he would rather die than join them . Aside from his critical comments about the APC, the former minister had also made some negative comments against the Fulani ethnic group, alleging that the Fulani are making plans to dominate the country through a forceful takeover of people’s lands. A GOVERNMENT ONLY FOR FULANI PEOPLE – FANI- KAYODE In 2018, the former minister, in a response to the comment made by Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president that calling killer herdsmen Fulani is wrong, alleged that herdsmen killing people in some parts of the country are Fulani. “It is bad enough that hardly any Fulani leaders have come out to publicly condemn the activities of their herdsmen but to condemn the horrendous acts and then attempt to shield the racial identity of those behind it by saying that they are not Fulani is even worse,” the minister said. Also, Fani-Kayode, in an opinion titled: Ruga and the Fulani Agenda, published in 2019 , accused the federal government of being a government only for the Fulani people, adding that Nigeria is a “conquered and subjugated” state crafted for the “benefits” of the Fulani people. He also argued that Nigeria is not one nation and that Nigerians are pretending to love one another while secretly hating one another. I HAVE FULANI BLOOD IN ME – FANI-KAYODE Surprisingly, the former minister, in an article titled: I have Fulani Blood in Me, published in 2013, narrated how his maternal great-grandmother was a pure Fulani woman from Sokoto. Putting twist to his words, Fani-Kayode said his mother had one-quarter of Fulani blood in her, and he has one eighth, adding that out of respect for the Muslim side of his family, all his siblings had both Christian and Muslim names. He added that his Muslim name is Abdulateef while criticising critics who accused him of being anti-Islam of not knowing his background. “My maternal grandfather was a great and powerful Muslim cleric and scholar by the name of Sheik Nurudeen Sa’ Id. He was from Ilesha. He was also a civil servant, and he spent a good deal of his adult life in Lagos,” he wrote. “His father, that is my maternal great-grandfather, was a pure Yoruba man from Ilesha. However, his mother, that is my maternal great-grandmother, was a pure Fulani woman from Sokoto. “My grandfather, Sheik Nurudeen Sa’ I’d, who was half Fulani and half Yoruba, got married to my grandmother, Alhaja Abeke Sa’ id (nee Williams), who was a pure Yoruba woman. She was also known as ”Mama Ofin”. “She was from Lagos (Isale Eko) and she was the daughter of Alhaji Isa Williams who was a key leader in the Muslim community and the richest businessman and trader in the whole of Lagos in his day.” He further added that he is a true Nigerian that will love and live in Nigeria till death, regardless of the country’s numerous challenges. https://www.thecable.ng/rewind-in-2013-fani-kayode-said-he-has-fulani-blood-in-him |

A deeper Life Church member, Awoh Liberty, was dragged after he went about posting a photo of a female Corps member wearing a skirt instead of the trousers stipulated and issued by the NYSC. The photo which he posted on various Christian Facebook groups on Sunday, reads: No to Lucifer's Perception. No to Satan'd Deception. We the female say no no no to trouser." The post generated varying reactions on the groups with few in support while many argued that it's not possible to engage in physical activities in orientation camps while wearing trousers. One Emmanuel Emeng described the post as "Phariseeic in behaviour with a tint of fanatism" "This uniform is an occupational clothing na, all things are lawful but not all are expedient na. Wear the trouser, you never commit sin. Dont be like the unbelievers who are not enlightened" Toochukwu Ben Anefo, wrote: Dear poster I put it to you that you are using the time you would have used to preach salvation, the love of Christ, righteousness to advertise frivolities. Wearing trousers or skirt is not the way to eternity with God. Only Jesus. Preach him alone and allow the Holy spirit to do his work. Shalom." Bishop Paul Nwachukwu, the Founder of Grace of God Mission Int’l, has urged Nigerian pastors to use their wealth to alleviate the poverty of the people, especially the needy in the society. Nwachukwu said this in his sermon at the 70th birthday anniversary and book launch of Rev. William Okoye, a former Chaplain at Aso Rock Chapel yesterday in Abuja. Okoye is also the General Overseer of All Christians Fellowship Mission (ACFM). Nwachukwu advised pastors not to take their duties lightly but they should be ready to talk at any time, adding that this was not the time to play as the church had been turned into a social club. He stressed the need for pastors to be the light and show the way to the Kingdom of God to those who were in darkness for the country to experience peace and development. The bishop, who took his reference from the Holy Book of Isaiah Chapter 60, said the country would not witness transformation until the ministers of God focus attention on the spiritual growth of their members. “God’s people must be prepared for this time. This is not the time to play. The church has been turned into a social club. “Hell fire is real and it is not for one million years. Christians need to know how to pray,” Nwachukwu said. In his remarks, President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Rev. Samson Ayokunle, advised pastors to embrace spiritual brokenness and thrive with humility. Ayokunle, who described the celebrant as a modest man with humility, said the church should emulate him and be committed in the area of missions. Senior Pastor, Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Pastor Paul Enenche, called on Christians to be awake, alert and not forget themselves in this world and just know that every single day draws them closer to the end of time. Enenche described the celebrant as a man who was very true to his calling and has served his Maker and nation with the best of integrity and character, adding that it was rare these days to see someone with consistency in service to God. A former minister of information and orientation, Prof. Jerry Gana, also described Okoye as a lover of people. Gana said the he was not ashamed to preach the gospel of Christ because he knew and believed in the power of God for the salvation of all those who believed. He said that the celebrant was always very happy with any programme that would uplift the poor and transform the economy of the society for people to live good lives. The celebrator thanked dignitaries that attended the event and called on Christians to have values as they were their core beliefs that would help shape their lives. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, who expressed the “urgent need for the Ministry to intensify on the existing capacity in the NAPTIP in order to achieve its Key Result Areas as identified.” She added that the recommendation of Fatima Waziri-Azi was based on her “pedigree, vast experience and proven track record to drive the agency forward and consolidate on what has been achieved so far.” A former Head of Department of Public Law at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Waziri-Azi is a Women’s Right advocate, a campaigner against domestic and sexual based violence and an expert in Rule of Law. https://leadership.ng/breaking-buhari-sacks-naptip-dg-appoints-waziri-azi/amp/ |
Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has expressed optimism that the next president of Nigeria will be someone with a “good heart” like President Muhammadu Buhari. The Governor made this known while fielding questions from correspondents after a visit to President Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja on Monday, September 6. Umahi also noted that members of different political parties from the South-East are working within their parties to ensure that they concede their presidential tickets to the region. Asked whether South-East leaders were working to get the main political parties to zone the presidency to the region, he said: “Well, for me, I’m very much entrenched in completing my projects. And I will look into politics when my tenure is remaining one year, which is from May 29 2022. And I think it is the same thing with other governors of South-East and by extension, governors of APC. Speaking further, he said; "My position about what you ask is that our people that are in those political parties are making efforts in selling the need for South-East to produce the next president "But I think both the governors and Mr. President should not be distracted. When the elections are done and won, it should be governance. But in this country, the moment the election is completed, the next one that starts is that the masses are being cheated "So, those whose job is politics and who are not into elected position, or appointed position have all the time and the opportunity to do this canvassing. And I think that they are doing it and doing it very well "But I continue to say that power rests in the hands of God. And God will also give us the next president who has good heart like President Buhari for the good of this country. We need God’s own anointing for our own anointed president, for the interests and unity of this country.” he concluded. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/09/2023-god-will-give-nigeria-president-with-good-heart-like-buhari-―umahi/ |
