As 2021 draws the curtain to usher in 2022, it is important to look at some of the events that impacted the economy. While many Nigerians believe that nothing can surprise them, the federal government took some steps that impacted the economy positively and negatively in the year. Some applauded the decisions while others knocked and expressed anger. TheCable looks at some of the issues that impacted the economy in 2021. TWITTER BAN As Nigerians settled into the evening of June 4, 2021, the federal government announced the indefinite suspension of Twitter. The suspension came after the microblogging site deleted tweets from President Muhammadu Buhari’s account. The president had tweeted that the country will treat the Indigenous People of Biafra ( IPOB) in the “language they understand”. Defending the decision, Lai Mohammed, the information minister, condemned the deletion of the president’s post and accused Twitter of “double standard”. Many described the decision of the Buhari government as an effort to shrink civil space. Apart from the civil space, the Nigerian economy has lost over N500 billion due to the shutdown, according to estimates by NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool, a data-driven online service. Per NetBlocks estimates, the country’s economy loses N104.02 million ($250,600) every hour to the ban on Twitter. CRYPTO BAN The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directed banks to close accounts of persons or entities involved in cryptocurrency transactions within their systems. The directive came as a shock to Nigerians. The CBN said crypto investments have high risk and are used for money laundering, terrorism financing, illicit fund flows and criminal activities. “Further to earlier regulatory directives on the subject, the bank hereby wishes to remind regulated institutions that dealing in cryptocurrencies or facilitating payments for cryptocurrency exchanges is prohibited, ” a circular signed by Bello Hassan, director for banking supervision and Musa Jimoh, director of the payment system management department, read. “Accordingly, all DMBs, NBFIs and OFIs are directed to identify persons and/or entities transacting in or operating cryptocurrency exchanges within their systems and ensure that such accounts are closed immediately.” Nigerians on social media also expressed grievances. BAN ON FX SALE TO BDCs, INVESTIGATION OF ONIWINDE ADEDOTUN Of ABOKIFX In September, Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said the apex bank is investigating Oniwinde Adedotun , the founder of abokiFX over alleged forex data manipulations. abokiFx founder distanced himself from the allegations, saying the platform is solely for parallel rate information and not trading. He later shut down the parallel market trading segment on the website. In the spirit of what the government refers to as stabilising the economy and bringing sanity to the process, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) within the year stopped the sales of foreign exchange (FX) to Bureau De Change (BDCs) operators in the country. On Bureaux de Change operators, Emefiele said the apex bank received about 5,000 applications every month for BDC registration, adding that the operators are making efforts to dollarise the Nigerian economy. The CBN governor said BDC operators had become a conduit for illegal financial flows working with corrupt people to conduct money laundering in Nigeria. The bank stated that several international organisations, embassies patronise BDC through illegal forex dealers to fund their institutions. The bank also promised to “deal ruthlessly” with Nigerian banks that deal with illegal BDCs, and we will report foreign organisations patronising them. Since then, the Nigerian naira is still trading between N560 and N570 to a dollar at the parallel market. PETROLEUM INDUSTRY BILL SIGNED INTO LAW In August, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the petroleum industry bill into law. The passage of the PIB, which proved to be a nightmare for successive administrations, was conceived during the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2018, after the national assembly passed a harmonised version of the bill — the petroleum industry governance bill (PIGB), President Muhammadu Buhari refused assent over “legal and constitutional reasons”. The Petroleum Industry Act provides a legal, governance, regulatory and fiscal framework for the Nigerian petroleum industry, the development of host communities, and related matters. The PIA is expected to facilitate Nigeria’s economic development by attracting and creating investment opportunities for local and international investors. BAN ON SALES OF SIM CARDS, NIN-SIM LINKAGE In December 2020, Isa Pantami, minister of communications and digital economy, directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to audit the subscriber registration database. The directive instructed mobile network operators to suspend the sale, registration and activation of new SIM Cards until the completion of the audit exercise. The policy denied new entrants into the country access to purchase mobile lines while existing users who want to retrieve their lost lines were not allowed access. This resulted in a massive decline in telecoms’ mobile subscriptions and impacted earnings — and in turn, affected the Nigerian economy. The policy also affected the performance of the information and communication (Telecommunications) sector of the economy. https://www.thecable.ng/ban-on-sales-of-sim-cards-twitter-decisions-that-impacted-nigerian-economy-in-2021/amp |

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the crude oil in the Niger Delta region belongs to Nigeria. He said the country will not make progress if citizens sacrifice state for tribe. In a letter on Tuesday and addressed to Edwin Clark , Ijaw leader, Obasanjo said tribal allegiance must be suppressed for a state to emerge. The former president was responding to comments credited to the Ijaw leader. Clark had reportedly said Obasanjo’s “hatred against the Niger Delta people is disappointing”. The Ijaw leader’s comments came after Obasanjo allegedly attacked Ebipamowei Wodu, national secretary of Ijaw National Congress (INC), over resource control at a recent peace meeting. Clark said section 140 of the 1963 constitution provided that a natural resource found in a region is to be controlled by the people of the area. But the former president said the provision did not imply that resources found in any region belongs to the people there. “My dear chief, where in this constitutional provision is it said or implied that minerals located in any part of Nigeria belongs to that location? For emphasis and to further buttress the point, the provision is even in the exclusive list – exclusively reserved to the federal government,” he said. “Let me proceed with the most basic constitutional fact that you cannot have two sovereign entities within a State which is what your position of Niger Delta ownership claim of the crude oil found in that location amounts to. All those who purchase crude oil from Nigeria enter into contractual relationships with Nigeria not with the Niger Delta. “I have always stood for equity and justice in our federation and, for me, tribe has to be suppressed for the state to emerge. And until the stat emerges, Nigeria will not make the desir progress as tribesmen will always sacrifice state fo tribe. This has always been my position and it will remain my position until I breathe my last. “There are many important points that you easily or conveniently left out in your letter. “Let me now separate the Global Peace Foundation meeting of December 13, 2021 at the instance of Bishop Onuoha and where I participated from the second meeting of CGN which followed on December 14, 2021. We believe that the conclusion and the report of the meeting of December 14, 2021 hold the best position for realistic and pragmatic action for taking the country forward as possible actionable amendment to the constitution before 2023 elections. “Some of the languages you have deployed to describe me in your letter are offensive, uncouth and I totally and completely rejected them. I am not inconsistent, hypocritical, unstatesman and nor am anybody’s lackey. You use your own yardstick to judge others. “I fear God and I respect those who respect themselves and I hope it is about time you change from a tribesman to a statesman of character. That is what Nigeria and indeed the region you profess to love demand of you at this stage.” https://www.thecable.ng/obasanjo-nigeria-wont-make-progress-if-citizens-sacrifice-state-for-tribe/amp |

Yusuf will be turbaned as Talban Daura on Saturday December 18, making him the District Head of Kwasarawa. Alhaji Umar Farouk, the Emir of Daura, has offered an explanation on why Yusuf, son of President Muhammadu Buhari was given a title recently. Yusuf will be turbaned as Talban Daura on Saturday December 18, making him the District Head of Kwasarawa. The Emir who spoke at the turbaning ceremony of four new village heads on Thursday December 16, said Yusuf was given the title so he won't be strolling around Abuja and Yola, his mother’s hometown. He said; “We are giving him this title to reciprocate the all the good things his father, President Muhammadu Buhari, has done to Daura. “Even if you don’t like Buhari, you know that Daura of today is different from what it were six years ago. So, to reciprocate this gesture, we gave him the title of Talban Daura, which he gave to his only son, Yusuf. This will prevent him from strolling around Yola (his mother’s hometown) and Abuja. “From University of Transport Technology to Federal Polytechnic, to good roads networks and many other development projects, Daura is today better than some states in the country, development-wise. “We have many sons in Daura who excelled have excelled, but do not want to be associated with it, so Buhari stand out among them." https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2021/12/we-gave-yusuf-buhari-a-title-so-he-wont-be-strolling-around-abuja-and-yola-emir-of-daura.html |

Ned Nwoko, a former member of the House of Representatives, has been accused of defrauding some African monarchs and leaders through fictitious giant projects he lured them to invest in, according to a report by SaharaReporters. Nwoko, who represented Aniocha North-South and Oshimili North-South, Delta Statein the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003 is also involved in a Paris Club deal as he seeks to collect some money from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum. A source told SaharaReporters that Nwoko is not only subjecting his people in Delta State to destitution by forcibly taking their land, he also uses his political influence to detain those who object to his schemes. SaharaReporters had published in May how Nwoko ordered Delta State Police Command to arrest Okey Ifejoku, the elected President-General of Idumeje-Ugboko Development Union, in 2017. The former lawmaker had accused Ifejoku of sponsoring the indigenes of Aniocha North Local Government Area to protest against him and kick against his bid to forcibly acquire additional 90 hectares of land from an area earmarked for all indigenes of the community. Also, the President of Idumuje-Ugboko in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state, Raymond Omesiete has spent months in prison for allegedly resisting Nwoko’s attempt to forcibly acquire additional 90 hectares of land from an area earmarked for all indigenes of the community. SaharaReporters gathered that Raymond was arrested by the police acting on Nwoko’s directive on November 23, 2020, and was detained at the State Command in Asaba, the capital. Meanwhile, Ned has again been accused of systematically dispossessing his kinsmen of their farmlands. He was also accused of using his contacts to demonise the King of Idumuje-Ugboko, Obi Chukwunonso Nwoko and stall the issuance of staff of office to him five years after he ascended the throne. The source said, “Instead, he has financed and propped up a puppet Obi, Prince Solomon Eziokwubundu Nwabuokei, as a parallel Obi who will do his bidding and give him free rein of the land he covets at Idumuje-Ugboko. Ned's support for Solomon is nothing but the sinister machinations of a man who in connivance with the king, is only assuaging his greedy thirst for community land with no stress and then contacting foreign investors who would use the land and pay directly to Ned. “Our investigation has revealed that this act of criminal subterfuge, if successful, would guarantee the comfort of his future generations.” Speaking on the alleged atrocities committed by Nwoko outside his hometown, the source said, “He claims he wants to eradicate malaria from Africa and is junketing round the world, visiting kings and presidents to sell his malaria eradication vision. “Many presidents have unknowingly fallen for this and gone into collaboration with him. He is on the prowl and must be stopped before he sells Nigeria one day. “How can one man tell us that he wants to embark on the aerial fumigation of Africa using helicopters? Not done, Prince Ned has begun a campaign that he wants to fund the production of a malaria vaccine. Ned is not a scientist and has no knowledge of vaccines. His only interest is to rip off nations and the World Health Organization (WHO). “Finally, anyone still in doubt, please take a trip to Idumuje-Ugboko community. The town is now a shadow of its former self,” the source added. About his entanglement with the Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF), the source said, “The Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF) has seen through the thick smokescreen of this individual and is determined to prevent Ned Nwoko from further benefiting from the Paris Club refunds to the value of $418 million. The NGF knows that if Prince Ned gets hold of this money he would go on the rampage again and annex all the available lands in Idumuje-Ugboko for more fictitious and even more fictional projects. “What empowerment activities can he proudly show to the world that he has done for his people? The promise of a Sports University and Golf Course remains a mirage. Grass has overtaken the university site, a situation that tells us the University cannot be realised in our lifetime. Based on the above, it's safe to say that Ned Nwoko has no love for his maternal community; his only interest and greedy desire are to take over all the land of the community to ensure the comfort and prosperity of his future generations." Calls put across by SaharaReporters to Nwoko were not answered. A text message also sent to his line was not replied to, even at the time of filing this report. http://saharareporters.com/2021/12/15/ex-house-representatives-member-ned-nwoko-accused-scamming-african-leaders-white-elephant |
