A native doctor has been sentenced to spend as many as 97 years in prison after he was found out to have committed a crime. According to NAN, Justice Angela Otaluka of the FCT High Court, Apo, on Wednesday sentenced a 43-year-old native doctor, Clement Joseph to a total of 97 years in prison over N5.6 million fraud. Joseph, also known as “Dr Omale”, was arraigned by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a seven-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence. Delivering judgment in the case, Mrs Otaluka held that the prosecution had proved its case against the defendant and subsequently found him guilty as charged in all seven counts. She, therefore, sentenced him to seven years on count one without any option of fine and sentenced him to 15 years each on counts two to seven without any option of fine. The judge, however, ordered that the sentence is to run concurrently, excluding the two years he had spent in prison custody before being convicted. Also, Mrs Otaluka ordered the convict to make a restitution of the sum of N5. 6 million to Bola Akinbola, the nominal complaint in the case. In his allocutus before the sentence, counsel for the defendant, Johnbull Adara, urged the court to temper justice with mercy, adding that the court should take into account the fact that the convict has been in custody since August 5, 2016. While pleading that the court should give minimum sentence to the convict, Mr Adara urged the court to consider the fact that Clement is a first-time offender. https://www.tori.ng/news/119183/nigerian-native-doctor-sentenced-to-97-years-in-pr.html |
Three more presidential candidates have separately approached the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, asking it to void the outcome of the February 23 presidential election. In their various petitions, the three presidential candidates, urged the tribunal to invoke its powers and quash the declaration of President Buhari as the bonafide winner of the 2019 presidential election. The petitioners separately alleged that the election was characterized by manifest irregularities, adding that the Electoral Act was not substantially complied with by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. Those asking the tribunal to sack President Buhari and order a fresh election, are the Presidential candidate of the Hope Democratic Party, HDP, Chief Ambrose Owuru, whose petition marked as CA/ PEPC/001/2019, also cited the All Progressives Congress, APC and the INEC as Respondents. Owuru secured a total of 1,663 in the presidential election. In another petition that was registered as CA/PEPC/004/2019, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM, Pastor Aminchi Habu, equally challenged the outcome of the presidential poll. Similarly, in its own petition marked CA/PEPC/003/2019, the Coalition For Change, C4C and its presidential candidate, Geff Chizee Ojinka, also urged the tribunal to nullify President Buhari’s election. Remarkably, unlike in all the other petitions, the C4C, which garnered a total of 2,391 votes at the presidential poll, cited the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, as the 2nd Respondent in its case. It told the tribunal that its candidate, Ojinka, was validly nominated to participate in the February 23 election in order to secure votes to occupy the presidential seat. “Petitioners contend that the above electionThe Justice Abdul Aboki led tribunal had on Wednesday, ordered that President Buhari should be served with a copy of the the petition marked as CA/ PEPC/002/2019, which was filed by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar. The tribunal directed that Buhari should be served with all the legal processes, through any senior officer at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja. Atiku and the PDP had applied to be allowed to serve the petition on Buhari via substituted means, decrying that retinue of security operatives at the Presidential Villa, made it impossible for them to effect personal service of the processes on him. http://dailypost.ng/2019/03/27/nigeria-election-three-presidential-candidates-join-atiku-challenging-buharis-victory/ |

Okara made a mark on the African literary scene as one of the major pacesetters. Reported to be the first renowned English Language black African poet and the first African modernist writer, Okara is widely published in influential national and international journals. Gabriel Imomotimi Gbaingbain Okara, a poet, novelist and playwright, has died at 97 years — four weeks before his 98th birthday. He died on Monday in his sleep at his residence at Okaka Estate in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, after a brief illness. Okara made a mark on the African literary scene as one of the major pacesetters. Reported to be the first renowned English Language black African poet and the first African modernist writer, Okara is widely published in influential national and international journals. Born on April 24, 1921 in his hometown Bomoundi in the present-day Bayelsa State of Nigeria, Dr. Okara attended the famous Government College Umuahia in the 1930s and 40s where he got exposed to and was inspired by the writings of Williams Shakespeare and others. He went on to attend Yaba Higher College and Northwestern University, USA. He has in his collections several back-to-back hit poems and novels. 'Piano and Drums', 'You Laughed and Laughed and Laughed', 'Once Upon a Time', 'The Fisherman's Invocation' and 'The Voice' and concatenation of several other linked short stories and plays come highly recommended for post- primary, undergraduate and graduate studies. The vintage of his classics find expression in the leitmotif: reminding Africans of their true identity as expressed in culture, folklore and thought pattern in a world of rapidly penetrating western culture. An all-encompassing writer, his thoughts and works appear to be greatly influenced by his immediate environment. Okara is home and dry in all genres of literature but conveys his message in the genre which will be more expressive and relevant to the thematic discuss. http://saharareporters.com/2019/03/25/renowned-bayelsa-poet-gabriel-okara-dies-four-weeks-98th-birthday

The Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Friday held that the petition of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and its candidate, Isiaka Adeleke, challenging the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Gboyega Oyetola has merit. A three-member panel of the tribunal held that the petition has merit and accordingly dismissed the objections filed by Governor Oyetola, APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Mr Adeleke and the PDP in their different petitions had urged the tribunal to declare that he scored the highest lawful votes in the election and should be declared as the winner. However, Mr Oyetola, APC and INEC filed their notices of preliminary objection against the petition on the grounds that the petition is incompetent. They said the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the petition. Delivering the lead ruling of the three-member tribunal, the chairman, Ibrahim Sirajo, held that the objections were misconceived and struck them out. The tribunal also faulted INEC handling of the relevant documents. The tribunal said that the CTC should and must be exact replicas of the EC8A pink copies. The discrepancies must, therefore, be explained and justified by the 1st respondent: INEC. In this instant, INEC failed to explain nor justify the alterations and failed to call any witnesses to justify the alterations. It held further that the attempt to explain the alterations on the basis of mere correction of errors is not acceptable and the fact that the said errors were consistently made in the disputed areas means it was a deliberate action taken. However, the court is yet to deliver its judgment on the main suit of who the true winner of the election is. The judgement on the main suit will be delivered later on Friday. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/321626-breaking-osun-tribunal-dismisses-apc-oyetolas-objection.html?fbclid=IwAR1mDTVl-k0s-XpNyRyY5qcw4alrtvQYo_a9e4iswfTSFfAaYkzOgHtrE0I
