CultureRe: Pidgin To Become A Formal Language by ezeagu(m): 12:26am On Sep 25, 2010
ChinenyeN:
So that's the problem? Don't dictionaries contain synonyms, anymore? Honestly, I don't believe there should even be a question of which word to use. Aside from that, speakers always dictate the flow of their yarn. No dictionary can restrict a language, especially one as adaptive as pidgin.

Also, maybe I should have been clearer. When I said "common pidgin", I was referring to the idea of some kind of generality among varieties (whether or not those from, say the east can effectively communicate with those from the west) and not necessarily to the existence of a standard variety. My mistake for the misunderstanding.
Pidgin English is too variable, and can't be standardised. If 'speakers always dictate the flow of their yarn' then you can't create a dictionary telling someone in Eastern Nigeria that another way to ask a question in pidgin is to use 'shebi', it's not part of their pidgin experience which means it can't be a synonym for them.

Things dat generally destroy marriages include
1) infidelity(Not tribe dependent)
2) Childlessness(Not tribe dependent)

I quite agree Ezeagu but mono-ethnic England wasn't always so and God knows they had their bitter wars but we must realise that in 2010 the world is fast shrinking. Nations and peoples are seeking alliances of all types across religion, politics and ideologies. The States, England, France, Germany and even Russia, yes Russia today all have blacks in authority. Sectional walls everywhere are crumbling. I was particularly pleased for the Benenoir who got elected in Russia and I'm sure every black man would. On Nairaland we celebrated the election of Nigerians in the UK a few months ago. My deal then is why are issues like these a problem back home. Why would a man not feel comfortable taking a wife from anywhere in Nigeria. If politics or business can do it 6,000 miles away why can't love do it here. Afterall Nigeria is no more than 1,000 miles across.
Let me just say now that is not my business who anybody chooses to marry, my issue is the notion that inter-ethnic marriages 'force' ethnic harmony, just to clear that up for anybody.

Okay, you have to understand that there's a difference between being an immigrant and having two indigenous homelands clipped and bounded together, that whoever those black people in Europe are getting higher positions, doesn't mean that they will go to the town hall meeting, city hall, etc and start to be speaking Igbo or some other language; these immigrants have to assimilate to, which brings me to the point that I have always made, the indigenous/dominant culture. Every country needs one, and from observation, you will see that every country (and that is every single one of them) without a dominant culture is failed or declining, or non existent (Yugoslavia), Nigeria is no different, no matter how much inter-ethnic mixing that so many countries, kingdoms and empires have already tried, nothing will unite a country like a dominant culture, it's obvious. Nigeria has three broad dominant cultures battling it out in every section of the country. Anyway this is for another thread. The point is that inter-ethnic mixing doesn't create a nation, culture does.

What a topic in 2010, Nigerians wake up. Can someone from Leeds marry a person from Brighton, what about New-york and Boston, how about Marseille marrying a dude from Strasbourg, Milan V Palermo, Cologne and Munich and on and on. What is our problem. We school together, serve together, worship together, work together, trade together, no problem and then when it gets to man and wife we talk food, village, uncles, language. Rubbish. No wonder, fifty years after so called independence we are more dependent than ever before, more comfortable, more trusting of non-nationals than ours. We must rotate for acceptable leadership, we must have every tribe represented in our sporting teams, we must have an airport, university, refinery, etc in every state viable or not. We are in a mess not knowing it. How can foreigners trust and respect us as Nigerians when when tribe and tongue is powerful enough to turn a single matrimonial bed into a bunk domitorial one.

I can marry anyone I want, live anywhere I choose, conduct business with anyone I please and invest every dime I have in any field that's viable. The great USA is a product of very strange bed fellows, poles, greeks, irish, english, etc and not forgetting Kenyaindonesiamerican or what ever Obama is.
You can't compare mono-ethnic (for the most part) England to Nigeria. You can't compare pilgrim/migrant created Anglo-Americans to Nigerians. Nigeria is indigenous territory of the many ethnic groups. The United States is not, and besides they're bound by English culture. Nigeria was not created with any of their consent. Nigeria's only options is 'federalism' or a break-up. There's no such thing as making a nation out of thin air.

She says even though the girl is good, Ibo peeps (her family members) tend to be overbearing and never really let the man rest with demands upon requests.  grin
There are Igbo women that are the providers for their households, I don't know any Igbo woman that solely depends on their husband for her families upkeep, if they do, they've usually invested into the marriage 6x the amount their asking for.

CultureRe: Advantages And Disadvantages Of Inter-tribal Marriage by ezeagu(m): 3:20pm On Sep 24, 2010
. . . .two people marrying doesn't unite two massive "tribes", and if you mean by mass marriage, then it still doesn't do much. What does is if the children of that couple form a whole new unique ethnic group out of both their mothers ethnic group and fathers. This does not happen and the mothers ethnic group is considered to have no relation to the child who has a father from another ethnic group. There's a lot of instances where the partners themselves still have bad perceptions about the other partners ethnic group.

Example:
Babangida's kids have nothing to do with Igboland and I bet you they have no recognition of the land as part theirs.

I've seen fathers angry when their children wear their mothers ethnic wear. Call me back when a Yoruba man allows his children to attend an event with okpu okonoko and ishi agu.

ChinenyeN:
Common Pidgin. Even, I think it [common pidgin] is relatively the same for West Africa, in general. Feel free to correct me, if I'm wrong.
There isn't a common Pidgin, it's just that generally the varieties aren't much different, but they differ sometimes completely in some other forms. Like in Lagos lot's of people use words like 'Shebi', and in the East words like 'Okwa' is used. Which word would be added to the dictionary, both?

A lot of pidgin is from Sierra Leone and Jamaica, an everyday Nigerian wouldn't be able to understand Sierra Leone Creole. In Ghana they obviously have words like 'Charlae' and 'pa', etc. Not to talk of Northern Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, etc.

Honestly do I really need to spell out the positive things in Nigeria to a Nigerian?? undecided

People.Warm, hospitable, humourous, respectful, and dignified
Architecture. Very creatively designed homes and office blocks.
Vegetation. Amazing variety of flora and fauna
Busuness opportunities. Great place for merchandising all kinds of products.
Weather. All year round sunshine
Armed forces. Increasingly professional military with a great reputation for international peace-keeping
Entertainment. Great movie and music industry.

There are loads of other examples I could mention.
The truth:

tensor777:
People.Warm, hospitable, humourous, respectful, and dignified
Hmm, pictures of smiling village/poor people, or pictures of people in Mr. Biggs grinning in front of meat pie? Those are the options, I've checked.

tensor777:
Architecture. Very creatively designed homes and office blocks.
Few. Ancient buildings, like the palace of Oyo, all demolished, but all the Portuguese architecture is intact. embarassed

tensor777:
Vegetation. Amazing variety of flora and fauna
I agree, but too vague, any country can do that. Maybe the Nigeria dwarf goat or hippopotamus would be more specific to Nigeria. (see Poland CNN iReport pictures for what I mean)

tensor777:
Busuness opportunities. Great place for merchandising all kinds of products.
No need to answer this one. Straight Abuja, Lekki, VI pics of over the top architecture. undecided Marble will full CNN.

tensor777:
Weather. All year round sunshine
In some places, like Jos, this is a good one, but with Nigeria lack of town planning, insulated towns and grid lock cause intense humidity, and many people avoid cities like Lagos because of this. Picture of people sweating is not nice.

tensor777:
Armed forces. Increasingly professional military with a great reputation for international peace-keeping
Armed forces is nice, although in 2010 alone over 600 people have died from things the army could have easily prevented, and probably helped not to prevent. . . . Their pensions are often delayed. They do a good job defending other countries. undecided Picture of tarted Nigerian uniforms, bashed vehicles and outdated ammunition aren't nice.

tensor777:
Entertainment. Great movie and music industry.
Terrible cheap VCD/VHS videos shot in 2 weeks. Music has copycat lyrics and beats are almost always directly 'influenced' by either Jamaican or (black) American music. No pictures, apart from those of shacks/shops housing stacks of VCD's with titles like 'Aki and Paw paw Part 7. . . disc A'.

tensor777:
There are loads of other examples I could mention.
You don't have any more to mention. I tried as well and I think others did so you did well.

Some people are being silly. The "Yoruba-press" did not and could not have made up the term Hausa-Fulani. That term is obviously a European creation, and it was created for the obvious reason that these two groups are linked in Nigeria, whether they like it or not. And there is no such thing as Yoruba-Fulani or Etsako-Fulani, that's just ludicrous. The only reason Hausa can be linked with Fulani in this way is because of similarity of culture.
They're linked primarily because of the Fulani conquest of the Hausa states which joined them at the hip, with the Fulani as the elite.

Federal Republic of Nigeria. 141,356,000. National or official languages: Edo, Efik, Adamawa Fulfulde, Hausa, Idoma, Igbo, Central Kanuri, Yoruba, English. Literacy rate: 42%–51%. Immigrant languages: American Sign Language, Bagirmi, Klao, Mbay, Mpade, Ngambay, Pana. Also includes languages of Lebanon, and Europe. Information mainly from J. Bendor-Samuel and Hartell 1989; R. Blench 1992, 2003, 1998–2004; B. Connell 1994, 2002; D. Crozier and R. Blench 1992; K. Hansford, J. Bendor-Samuel, and R. Stanford 1976; U. Siebert 1998–2002. Blind population: 800,000 (1982 WCE). Deaf institutions: 22. The number of individual languages listed for Nigeria is 527. Of those, 514 are living languages, 2 are second languages without mother-tongue speakers, and 11 have no known speakers.

I wonder why Ijaw wasn't added as a recognised language, maybe the information isn't complete, yet Kanuri is there. Their count for Nigerian languages is 516.
