ChinenyeN:Pidgin English is too variable, and can't be standardised. If 'speakers always dictate the flow of their yarn' then you can't create a dictionary telling someone in Eastern Nigeria that another way to ask a question in pidgin is to use 'shebi', it's not part of their pidgin experience which means it can't be a synonym for them. |
I dont think ethnicity has anything to do wit it, Any educated person(i dont mean someone with a Bsc, cos not all with Bsc are educated in 9ja) should be able know that just because we speak d same language doesnt mean we are incompartible, Things dat generally destroy marriages include 1) infidelity(Not tribe dependent) 2) Childlessness(Not tribe dependent) e.t.c. plus i dont think any marriage in nigeria has crashed due to ethnicity, ethnicity is just our fall guy when we cant face d truth.
Are you sure you're replying to the post you quoted? Reference:Let me just say now that is not my business who anybody chooses to marry, my issue is the notion that inter-ethnic marriages 'force' ethnic harmony, just to clear that up for anybody. Okay, you have to understand that there's a difference between being an immigrant and having two indigenous homelands clipped and bounded together, that whoever those black people in Europe are getting higher positions, doesn't mean that they will go to the town hall meeting, city hall, etc and start to be speaking Igbo or some other language; these immigrants have to assimilate to, which brings me to the point that I have always made, the indigenous/dominant culture. Every country needs one, and from observation, you will see that every country (and that is every single one of them) without a dominant culture is failed or declining, or non existent (Yugoslavia), Nigeria is no different, no matter how much inter-ethnic mixing that so many countries, kingdoms and empires have already tried, nothing will unite a country like a dominant culture, it's obvious. Nigeria has three broad dominant cultures battling it out in every section of the country. Anyway this is for another thread. The point is that inter-ethnic mixing doesn't create a nation, culture does. |
Gamine:Too bad for the many Somali and Igbo men falling over your gorgeous feet. . . . . . |
I guess Palm oil never existed, you know the Oil Rivers Protectorate of the British. . . . . . THAT STARTED OFF NIGERIA! I guess the former Eastern Region DIDN'T produce HALF OF THE WORLDS PALM KERNELS at one point. Oh, let's forget Udi division and it's coal, Enugu wasn't founded because of a coal industry. Port Harcourt (a commercial 'hub' today) wasn't built for Enugu's coal.THE RAILWAY TO MAKURDI AND JOS WASN'T BUILT BECAUSE OF ENUGU AND PORT HARCOURT, Iva Valley mine what? Ta! Get out! It's groundnut they were chopping and living on! |
phreakabit:Who told you that I needed information about what you hate and don't hate? Why don't you keep all that to yourself, or better yet, direct it to someone who cares or just shut YOUR mouth? Fool. Spending my time on rubbish. |
Reference:You can't compare mono-ethnic (for the most part) England to Nigeria. You can't compare pilgrim/migrant created Anglo-Americans to Nigerians. Nigeria is indigenous territory of the many ethnic groups. The United States is not, and besides they're bound by English culture. Nigeria was not created with any of their consent. Nigeria's only options is 'federalism' or a break-up. There's no such thing as making a nation out of thin air. |
2buff:There are Igbo women that are the providers for their households, I don't know any Igbo woman that solely depends on their husband for her families upkeep, if they do, they've usually invested into the marriage 6x the amount their asking for. Dora Akunyili Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala There aren't any Nigerian females that are more prominent and independent today than the two above. Tell your mum. |

PhysicsQED:http://www.frontiermuseum.org/WestAfrica.html It's actually a museum piece, so I don't think much events will be held there except demonstrations of 1700's Igbo/West African life. |

We all know that no Nigerian parent in their right Nigerian mind is sending their kids to school to learn Pidgin English, people are struggling to get parents to allow them to teach their kids natural traditional languages, it's pidgin they'll send them to school to learn? |
www.nairaland.com/attachments/300670_ti2_jpg015aac2efbbcd7a3e5c1eb2a3b5d6193 If I didn't know better, I'd say that this is an Indian wedding with coral. |
. . . .two people marrying doesn't unite two massive "tribes", and if you mean by mass marriage, then it still doesn't do much. What does is if the children of that couple form a whole new unique ethnic group out of both their mothers ethnic group and fathers. This does not happen and the mothers ethnic group is considered to have no relation to the child who has a father from another ethnic group. There's a lot of instances where the partners themselves still have bad perceptions about the other partners ethnic group. Example: Babangida's kids have nothing to do with Igboland and I bet you they have no recognition of the land as part theirs. I've seen fathers angry when their children wear their mothers ethnic wear. Call me back when a Yoruba man allows his children to attend an event with okpu okonoko and ishi agu. |
ChinenyeN:There isn't a common Pidgin, it's just that generally the varieties aren't much different, but they differ sometimes completely in some other forms. Like in Lagos lot's of people use words like 'Shebi', and in the East words like 'Okwa' is used. Which word would be added to the dictionary, both? A lot of pidgin is from Sierra Leone and Jamaica, an everyday Nigerian wouldn't be able to understand Sierra Leone Creole. In Ghana they obviously have words like 'Charlae' and 'pa', etc. Not to talk of Northern Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, etc. |
And what I will say is 'The truth, and appreciated, but nothing to celebrate about'. |

'Nigeria is still worth celebrating because it's still there' Hmm, Somalia is worth celebrating because it's still there? Afghanistan is worth celebrating because it's still there? I would even say the opposite that it is sad that it is still there. |
tensor777:The truth: tensor777:Hmm, pictures of smiling village/poor people, or pictures of people in Mr. Biggs grinning in front of meat pie? Those are the options, I've checked. tensor777:Few. Ancient buildings, like the palace of Oyo, all demolished, but all the Portuguese architecture is intact. ![]() tensor777:I agree, but too vague, any country can do that. Maybe the Nigeria dwarf goat or hippopotamus would be more specific to Nigeria. (see Poland CNN iReport pictures for what I mean) tensor777:No need to answer this one. Straight Abuja, Lekki, VI pics of over the top architecture. Marble will full CNN.tensor777:In some places, like Jos, this is a good one, but with Nigeria lack of town planning, insulated towns and grid lock cause intense humidity, and many people avoid cities like Lagos because of this. Picture of people sweating is not nice. tensor777:Armed forces is nice, although in 2010 alone over 600 people have died from things the army could have easily prevented, and probably helped not to prevent. . . . Their pensions are often delayed. They do a good job defending other countries. Picture of tarted Nigerian uniforms, bashed vehicles and outdated ammunition aren't nice.tensor777:Terrible cheap VCD/VHS videos shot in 2 weeks. Music has copycat lyrics and beats are almost always directly 'influenced' by either Jamaican or (black) American music. No pictures, apart from those of shacks/shops housing stacks of VCD's with titles like 'Aki and Paw paw Part 7. . . disc A'. tensor777:You don't have any more to mention. I tried as well and I think others did so you did well. |
Arrgh, the cycle continues. . . . just in time for my signature, if that is a prediction, then I fear for Nigeria. |
Wow. |
PhysicsQED:They're linked primarily because of the Fulani conquest of the Hausa states which joined them at the hip, with the Fulani as the elite. |
Did you guys notice something. . . . Jonathan's first name is Goodluck! ![]() |
Moonstone:You're right. But the creation of the union in the first place was the root of all the problems. |
Moonstone:The union is. |
Moonstone:No it's not. |
The elite Fulani only have as much power as they have now because they sucked the British colonisers toes t the point that they tried to delay Nigeria's independence. They couldn't go on ruling without their help, the world had changed drastically from cavalry driven raids. MaziUche0:There were Fulani slaves. |

Their count for Nigerian languages is 516. |
