Rubbish! The British had already conquered the Sokoto Caliphate well enough that they had complete control over it. They didn't need to send their missionaries and educators to control the people because they already had control over the feudal heads who had absolute power over the north.

there is a difference btw slavery and colonization- get that. Both are bad though. I don't think Nigerian leaders at the time wanted to revolt. Colonisation and slavery are the same thing. Somebody taking over your resources and your land and making you toil on it for them is slavery. Don't mistake that. Some people either accept their slavery or they have dignity enough to revolt. What I see in that picture is simply a slave and this reasoning about the picture is why people can be held as slaves for decades and centuries.
