Ofodirinwa: Igbos aren't hated. When you're in another man's land, you will be treated as if your in another man's land. The reason Igbos have issues with others is because more than others we're in another man's land. We're the largest minority group in every major Nigerian city so it's going to seem like Igbos Vs. Everyone because we're the only ones walking around in their backyard. We give others liberty to offend us.
I don't know if anyone has really checked whether or not you can import and export from PH. Frankly we go to Lagos because we believe the further from home the more to brag about. Niger is more pretentious in that illogical respect that Lagos. Some people will call Congo 'abroad' if you give them a chance. We don't move because of any real business decision, we move out of rote habit and ignorance. There are igbos in villages in Katsina. Is it that there was no business in Aba, Onitsha, Enugu, Owerri, Asaba, PH, Nnewi, Umuahia, Awka or Orlu? Many have skipped Enugu to go to Dutse and suffer, so it's not a matter of Lagos being convenient, we're just illogical people.
If someone's business booms in Lagos, power to them. Business is not patriotic, so if you're mixing patriotism with business that's you're loss. I would like for everyone to be in the east and to me it's logical and feasible, but they don't see it that way. You're right, there's also the influence of those who come back from Lagos after going there empty handed coming back with money bags and building 50 room houses in the village. The kids see this an believe Lagos is magic. Unfortunately because of Igbo culture of success, they don't know that those who don't make it don't come back and are living in ten room per person flats in Mushin. I still maintain, though, that if there were enough industries in Igboland and the basic need light, food, water were stable people wouldn't feel the urge. |

Afam4eva: Microsoft headquareters is in Seattle, Washington while Cocacola is in Atalnta Georgia. If these companies were in Nigeria, they would be in Lagos and Lagos only. They could only venture into ogun state owing to it's closeness to lagos. We operate like the united Kingdom where almost everything is centered in London. This means that other states have to carve a niche for themselves to be taken seriously by organizations. Calabar has done that with tourism. For some reason, Calabar is the most popular city after Lagos, Abuja and Porthacourt despite the fact that interms of development, Enugu beats it imo. It's true, it's evident in the fact that Lagos and Nigeria are sometimes used interchangeably meaning in the eyes of some investors other places don't even exist or are seen as oily or war torn periphery. |

Dancing with coffins at burials This traditional, ironically, existed in parts of Igboland but the practice was strictly in the case of murdered victims in which the pallbearers were 'empowered' and after some hefty and great movements swaying side to side the spirit of the deceased was believed to lead the procession to the murderer, where either some mystical calamity befell them or they confessed.
Umu Asebi and Uniform The practice of wearing 'unifrom' at weddings and funerals is a chiefly Lagosian influence in addition to the institution of Umu Asebi, bridesmaids, at weddings. The clue is in the foreign names.
Eze - Transformed Warrant Chiefs There were a few religious political figure heads know variably as either Eze, Obi, and or Igwe who were mostly elective from special families and had lesser powers than some conventional kings, apart from those all the other so called "Eze" are an invention and institution propagated by the British in order to maintain greater control of the largely autonomous Igbo by introducing them as 'Warrant Chiefs', basically lineage heads who would look after tax collection for he British. When there were no more than 50 Eze or Obi before the British, there are now over 600 so called Eze in Imo State alone, an area that previously had zero kings and only representatives like the president of Ugwuta (Oguta). Most of these thousands of kings are no older than 20 years old, and some come from the warrant chief system. For the most part their position as so called Eze isn't recognised in the customary law of the Igbo people.
Coral shawls and head dresses Much of the coral shawls and head dresses women were today, and even the so called crowns the "eze" wear today are an Edo influence, the crown especially an Urhobo influence. There was extensive use of coral in Western Igboland (Anioma), but apart from that many Igbo people today do not really adorn themselves like their ancestors who wore mostly mixtures of ivory, bronze, copper and other metals and stones.
Weddings This isn't so much an outside influence as it is a secularisation. Much of the 'Igbo' weddings you see are not the Igbo weddings of the past. The Igbo weddings of the past were mostly the protocols know today, but also a ritual of a woman ceremoniously being taken by her husband from her house or even being 'kidnapped' by her friends at night and taken to her husbands place. Many of the Igbo customs including attires like red caps were part of specific subgroups or areas but have been taken as a general Igbo culture in the 20th century, including wedding customs.

VickJames: The igboland needs rebranding, serious rebranding!
One of the reasons why these people get many things in their favour is the way they brand their places. A very good media advertisement about the region will open the region too. You're right, and I'm sorry to say this, out of the big three ethnic groups in tropical west African (Akan/Ghana, Yoruba, Igbo) Igboland is the least accessible and least know, even places that are less developed are better known. Also these cultures promote their culture as a 'diasporic' cultures and get many tourists to their festivals and so on. Again, this is an issue of accessibility as well. |

BuddahMonk: This is what many people don't understand about international trade, policies, relationship and diplomacy.
If Igbo leave Nigeria today, tomorrow growing resentment will envelope Nigeria from different quaters everybody demanding for a better package or be left off the hook.
Russia and Britain are sworn enemies but there are Russia investments in UK, even in the US many NBA clubs are Russian owned. US is restoring diplomatic ties with Cuba and Iran after decades of severing them.
If Biafra is landlocked Nigeria will see the economic importance of opening her ports for Biafra import and recoup the import duties. If they refused Biafra can import from Benin Republic and use ECOWAS treaty to send her consignments to their destination.
Many people doesn't even know that majority of Nigeria imports are from Benin Republic yet Nigeria have 5 seaports.
Biafra won't be a perpetual enemy of Nigeria neither will Nigeria see Biafra as perpetual enemy, regional and sub regional issues will reduce the tension Can you really compare Europe with Nigeria? Wasn't Nigeria the same place where Nigerians were being deported from their own country? |

BuddahMonk: Ezeagu said igbos can't invest in igboland because of lack of seaport then I ask him if there is one in kano or Kaduna but he didn't answer me.
Is there any seaport in Johannesburg SA the richest city in South Africa and her economic capital ?
Afam why do Igbos request for haven and earth before they want to invest in igboland. they will tell you there is no airport in Anambra and Abia, when you ask them to invest in Enugu or owerri that there is one there they will tell you there is no seaport in those places.
Seaport or not, with effective transportation arrangement and perfect marketing strategy you can dominate any part of the country with your products.
Nnewi people will import motorcycle from abroad, move it from Lagos down to Nnewi, people from Lagos will go to Nnewi and buy motorcycle parts and return back to Lagos.
Oga na brain nobi muscle, its not about the size of ones skull. Why don't you guys actually think past the face value. Northern Nigeria has ties if not dominant ties with southern Nigeria, particularly Lagos. There are trains, good roads and international airports that link northern and southern Nigeria. Most importantly northern Nigeria has managed to benefit off of Nigeria's income and isn't planning on seceding anytime soon. None of these are true for Igboland. You're surrounded on all sides by people who either don't trust you, just tolerate you or outright dislike you. Northern Nigerians do not do import/export in Lagos, that is Igbo people. Northern Nigerians have a grasp on politics, not economics like the Igbo, which is why Abuja is so close to them. Maybe you can understand now. Also the question about Johannesberg makes no sense because Johannesberg is not a country. |

Bishop42: From Wikipedia...
"Countries have made particular efforts to avoid being landlocked,by acquiring land that reaches the sea: The International Congo Society, which owned the modern-day Democratic Republic of the Congo, was awarded a narrow piece of land cutting through Angola to connect it to the sea"
This easiest way Igboland can have "full acess" to the Sea is adobt thesame approach. We could easily aquire a narrow land from Akwaibom or Calabar that stretches to the Sea. It's 100% possible Better thinking, the best way would be between the Akwete area and south easterly. But caution has to be taken because of this idea of birth rites so people don't start problems in the future. |

Unemadu: Seaports are important but doesnt mean a country cannot survive without it. That igbos are running from their homeland because od lack of seaport is absolutely ridiculous. Its like saying because a country has no mineral resources then its doomed. But all of these are ifs and buts and hypothetical. The practicals is that the Igbo people largely rely on import and export business, much of the industries from coal and oil to clothing, electronics and car manufacturing rely on seaports. To think that people would abandon these habits and change to services or whatever overnight just to move home is unrealistic, especially with the success driven culture that encourages people to move away to come back successful, and only successful. |

BuddahMonk: Very funny, childish and watery assertion, what about Kano and Kaduna are there seaport or indian ocean there
Think of it Aba one of the top 4 most industrialized cities in Nigeria have no access to the sea or seaport but more industrialized than those with access to the sea except Lagos. Except Lagos. You've just terminated your own argument. Lagos is the only place with something worthy of being called a sea port. So are you trying to argue that Aba would not benefit from a closer seaport or that all those treacherous journeys from the east to west would not be minimised? The thing about some of you people is that you don't like telling yourselves the truth. You'd rather give false equivalence to privileged places which you know are false and dig your head in the sand. A bulk of the Igbo wealth relies on import/export. The reason you people are even moaning about a second Onitsha Asaba bridge is because the current one is so taxed by people rushing to Lagos to receive their containers that it's on the verge of collapse. Nobody on the other side is as concerned, ask yourself why. |

You have to work extremely hard to maintain that affluence even if it was handed over to you on a silver platter. Yes, but if you don't have a proper framework they'll you have to settle for import/export and lock-up shops, nothing wrong with that, just that the framework in Nigeria does not allow easier upward mobility like Austria. You think Austria has to worry about differing world views and a thousand tongues? |

They focused on making things, food processing (nestle), steel, textile, machines that make other machines, electric machineries ABD, financials and Commodity trading... The list is endless. They didn't 'believe in themselves', they sat back and soaked in all the blood their fellow western Europeans were drenching from all over the globe. Those people are rich by default, Switzerland is basically ethnically French and German, Austria is Germanic, so they can afford to be landlocked, especially with their disposition allowing foreigners to amass mounds of wealth in their countries with no questions asked. kmariko: Kindly remind me of the ports of Switzerland.. Not investing in the east by the easterners due to " lack of access to seaport" is a very lame excuse. Can you really compare Switzerland nestled under one of the most powerful nations economically in the world with other powers nearby in a peaceful and relatively 'civilised' neighbourhood with decades of wealth and sovereignty to a region in dark Africa that's surrounded by a state that is historically hostile to them? Do the Swiss people have a huge business importing and exporting common products? Answer that first. |
