Personnel of the Rivers State Police Command, on Wednesday, rescued a young woman from being strangled at a hotel in the Rumuokoro area of Port Harcourt.

The woman, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, was said to have struggled with the man, who attempted to strangle her with a pillow while she was asleep.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Mustapha Dandaura, disclosed this while speaking with scores of women protesting the serial killing of young females in hotels in some parts of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that the latest victim had slept off, but woke up around 2am only to notice that the man was trying to kill her with a pillow.

A source in the Rumuokoro area said the woman raised the alarm when the man became violent and engaged her in a struggle as she tried to open the door.

The source stated, “The woman went into the hotel on the man’s invitation and when she slept off, the man tried to killed her with a pillow. She was lucky to have woken up as the man tried to pin her down.

“The woman immediately shouted for help and the people in the hotel called the police, who raced to the scene and forced the door open. The police eventually rescued the woman and arrested the man.”

The Shona, in this effort, was regarded as the healthy seed, while the Ndebele people needed to be ‘washed away’.

It remains unclear how many perished at the hands of this operation, with estimates between 8,000 and 30,000 victims.

The National Youths Service Corps on Friday handed over three prospective corps members found with fake certificates to police and other security operatives in the camp for further investigation.

The Taraba State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Florence Yaakugh, who handed over the prospective Batch B corps members at the camp in Jalingo, said the verification officer discovered them with fake documents.

Yaakugh named the perspective corps members as Nasiru Yau, who claimed to have studied Mass Communication, Shehu Murktar – Computer Science and Illiyasu Usman – Sociology, all from Isfop University of Kotonu, Benin Republic.

“They came for registration and the verification officer discovered them with fake certificates and verification papers. The Director General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Shaibu Ibrahim, recently expressed deep concern over the activities of fake corps members who cannot make a correct sentence in the English language.

“He directed us to check and fish out such persons and hand them over to the security operatives for further investigation and this is what we are doing,” he explained.

She noted that preliminary investigation revealed that the persons involved cannot write or say anything logical about their courses of study.

Yaakugh urged the security agents to do a thorough job so that the truth would come out and justice done to the affected persons.

She stated that there was another similar case involving a female corps member, also a foreign student, noting that the verification officer had yet to conclude internal investigation into the case.

The prospective corps members told journalists that they graduated from the institution, but admitted forging their verification papers.

One of them, Yau, told our correspondent that he gained admission through an agent and graduated.

“But when I came to Nigeria for computer verification, they disqualified me. That was why I forged the verification papers to enable me to go to the camp,” he added.

On his part, Murktar said he collected the verification paper from his friends, photocopied it and filled in his information while Usman explained that he asked some people working at the computer centre to get the paper for him.

He said, “They obtained the verification paper for me. I didn’t know it is a fake document.”

Numbers of residents in Taaba and Okwali communities in the Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State were suspected to have been killed and several houses burned during violent attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The attacks, it was gathered, started around 6pm on Tuesday after some unidentified youths raided the Taaba community and killed a yet-to-be-ascertained number of residents and another attack on the Okawli community on Wednesday in which scores were feared killed.

A resident of the Taaba community, who did not want his name in print, disclose to PUNCH that the attacks on both communities were suspected to have been carried out by cultists.

The resident said the assailants targeted their perceived enemies in both communities and shot indiscriminately when they invaded the villages.

He added that majority of the residents of both communities had fled for fear of being hit by stray bullets.

He said, “The attackers raided the Okwali community on Tuesday around 6pm, shooting indiscriminately into the air and at their targets, and also burning houses.

“This morning (Wednesday), they also attacked the Taaba community, which is the neighbouring community to Okwali, shooting and killing several persons.

“I cannot tell the number of corpses on the ground because I couldn’t count, but they were many.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, adding that the command had deployed its men in the affected communities to restore order.

“Yes, I can confirm the incident; the command has swiftly deployed its men in the area to restore peace and order,” Omoni stated.

A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has called on Nigerians, particularly those who worked against the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan to publicly tender an apology if the country must move forward.

Frank said unless Nigerians prefer to continue in pretence, the era of former President Jonathan managed well the challenge of insecurity compared to what the country has now.

In a statement, Timi Frank released to us in Abuja on Saturday, called on religious leaders, traditional rulers and all Nigerians who directly or indirectly worked against Jonathan’s government to ask for forgiveness before it is too late.

Frank acknowledged that there were things Jonathan’s government should have done better but in all Nigerians made a wrong choice of electing the current administration.

“I call on Nigerians that we should beg former President Goodluck Jonathan for wrongly voted him out and sabotaged his government. I must confess that as an APC figure in 2015, we fabricated many lies against Jonathan, though I have publicly apologised to him but other Nigerians, especially the pastors, Imams, traditional rulers and other opinion leaders should beg for forgiveness too.

“It is obvious now that insecurity in our Nation has gone out of hand. The challenge was limited to a zone under Goodluck Jonathan but presently no state, including General Buhari’s home state is secured.

“Under Jonathan, Fulani herdsmen were using stick but they now carry AK 47. Under Jonathan, lives of Nigerians were more important despite the challenges but under Buhari, cows are more important than lives.

“There was democracy and rule of law under Jonathan but its now rule of force and impunity. Under Jonathan, National Assembly were active and working but its now a rubber stamp.

“Under Jonathan, Nigerians abroad were relocating back home but under Buhari Nigerians are running away. Under Jonathan Nigerians are respected all over the world but that has since gone under Buhari.

“Under Jonathan Nigerians were crying in tears but now Nigerians are crying in blood

“Under Jonathan, there was freedom of speech but that has long gone under the APC administration.

“Under Jonathan, poverty, hunger and unemployment were not as bad as it is today. Under Jonathan Nigeria was a unitedunited Nation but sentiments have taken over now.

“As it is now, all the institutions of government that were working well under Jonathan have all been blackmailed and politicised.

“So, I call on others who betrayed Jonathan to come out publicly and apologise to him. I also use this opportunity to appeal to former President Jonathan to forgive Nigerians and bless the Nation against the evils that have pervaded the land.”

Frank said Nigerians should ask the APC administration what happened to the $1 Billion ECA money removed to fight insecurity in Nigeria.

He called on Nigerians to support a peaceful revolution to take back Nigeria to the good old days from the hands “evil men in power.”

Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has said that the life of his daughter, Mrs. Uloma Nwosu, and other members of his family, are being threatened by close aides of his sucessor, Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

In a statement released by his Personal Assistant, Ebere Nzewuji, Okorocha accused a top Imo State government official of ordering thugs to attack Mrs. Nwosu in Owerri. He warned that the continuous attack on him and members of his family, if not checked, willlead to a total break down of law and orders

“Few days ago, members of the Imo State Recovery Team went to her shop and looted her goods on the claims they were government property. They also went to the former first lady’s shop and carted away some containers. These were gift items and souvenirs she gives to first ladies and dignitaries during her annual August meeting, including items sold in her furniture shop.

These things happening in Imo State is very serious. It will lead to a total breakdown of law and order if care is not taken. We have reported to the police, even from the last incident, and we don’t think any serious action has been taken so far. We call on the authorities to do something about it before there is a breakdown of law and order.” the statement read
